  • There are several kinds of martial arts forms, and Kung Fu and Karate stand out as two of the most popular in the world. To the untrained eye, Kung Fu and Karate might look the same, no thanks to the thousands of martial arts movies that have graced our screens over the past decades.

my gung-fu instructor said it like this. he said there is no form better than another. he said what makes the difference is that in martial arts which is gung-fu (not kung-fu or karate) is that movements are superior. And that is bc true martial arts which is PaQua kuntao style from Southern China royal blueblood who inherit and protected it with each destruction and rebuilding of the Shaolin temple's many destructions.
I understand your "better fighter" (from my perspective as a martial artist) perception bc if anyone practices a punch, kick or whatever, they are going to be able to use it if needed. So the better fighter trained more, would you say as a point of agreement? I remember when I met my gung-fu instructor at 18 yrs old. He was 16 yrs old. He was the first in the entire history of martial arts that was promoted by the grandmaster to a master prior to 12 years of consecutive training.
The rule of entry from ancient Shaolin tradition is 6 yrs old. Upon acceptance he must train 12 consecutive years to be a master. that way there are no masters of gung-fu in the LS golden royal gung-fu federation that is below the age of 18. My instructor was the first and a black man. I wrote the first book on what happened to bruce lee and his son entitled "What (really) happened to Jun Fun Lee?" Init I explain what martial arts is. If you would like a copy then follow me and I will let you know when it is released. I plan on shocking the world with it.

I've done karate on and off for a couple of years throughout my life, I'm pretty much a complete beginner, but I did learn a bit. The main thing about karate seems to be optimization of movement. You keep your hands far out so you can block hits, you stand in a way that makes you able to dodge, punch or kick with a single movement, the techniques are designed to be as fast, un-telegraphed and interchangeable as possible, and rather than using your strength to impact, you coil yourself like a spring to strike using the torsion of your body, or you direct your entire bodyweight into your strike. A twelve year old child can send a grown man stumbling with one of these punches if done correctly. A huge disadvantage I found is that karate is usually taught as a sport, rather than a self defense martial art, which means that it only really works if your opponent fights in a comparable way, you can't really beat a guy at chess if he's playing bowling. If you fight somebody who's gonna punch you, karate is a pretty nice advantage. If you fight someone who's gonna tackle you, you're done when he gets closer than your arm length. There is really no grappling in karate. I always envied those aikido users, who can break your arm and make it look like an allemande

Also, don't rely only on what you've been taught; fee free to improvise and cherry pick from other disciplines. In a fight to defend your life or the life of a loved one, you will use whatever you have.

The last thing you want is to put some drunken wreck in a coma because you kicked him or punched him too hard and get done for manslaughter. This is why grappling is more probable as self defense. Not only are you protecting yourself from harm, your also protecting the drunken wreck from his head bouncing of the concrete like a basketball. Martial arts is considered a weapon and must be used with precautions. In MMA no martial art is better, but some are more probable.

They took the place of the original 36 chambers (forms, weapons, etc) of Northern Shaolin before martial arts was banned from Northern Shaolin and China. that is the only reason it is still standing after many demolitions. I have extensive martial arts experience [more than 50 years as a practitioner and teacher, including substantial training in Japanese, Chinese and Korean martial arts. I appreciate your clarification of "kung fu" as meaning "serious practitioner" rather than a specific style. The term "kung fu" itself doesn't specifically refer to martial arts, although it has come to mean that to many people. The term "wushu" is, in modern times, usually applied to tournament and competition practice, rather than applied arts. Karate is also a "common term" for all Japanese punching and kicking arts and tends to lump together Okinawan arts (like isshinryu and shorinryu) with mainland arts (like shotokan). I appreciate your distinction between circular and linear power, but when you start to extrapolate to ease of learning and power production, I think you are missing some important points.

Yes,very true. I did do Danzan Jujitsu that Bruce Lee learned off of Wally Jay, Hakuakai Karate from Soke Bernard Edwards, 7 Stars Mantis from my Uncle Brendan Lai and Kuntao and Silat from The De Thaours Brothers. I did a little Choy Li Fut but the instuctor was not giving the objectives and only forms and never really the concepts behind the forms. Plum Blossom ring a Bell. Anyways I am no expert at these but I am proficient enough to kill with them. I have seen better and worse. The only thing I can tell you is that the outcome of any battle is not predictable when strategy is involved. Those who have knowledge, don't predict. Those who predict, don't have knowledge.-Lao Tzu. ALL war is Deception-Sun Tzu. Kung Fu to me and from my experience is very deadly and faster than Karate and Judo and many jujitsu because they can stop root movements and break fulcrums quickly to instantly and have many deadly submissions. I served in MARSOC and they use concepts and no longer name the systems. The US military uses Ninjutsu mixed with Jujitsu and Silat. Known as MCMAP in the US Marines or MACP in the US Army. LINE was Kung Fu and was used by the Green Beret up until and was retired in 1997 by Ron Donvito. However, Ninjutsu is already in the Syllabus of many Ancient Chinese Martial Arts as is Jujitsu that also came from Chin Na Fa and Chin Na In. Jujitsu is a poor substitute when all things are equal. Today the US Navy SEALs use SCARS concepts and they are based on Ninpo tai jutsu or whole body evasion but Peterson seems to use some other elements as well. I will not say more since it is classified and people in our group can look and recognize what they are doing before they even do it. Peace Favor Your Sword. Kung Fu means to FOLD Space and Time. That is something we do not have a lot of. thank you for the clarifications as many are not aware IF not Osu? Nice metting you Mrs Martin.

There are 400 styles of kung fu from the very soft to the very hard. The words literally mean "hard work". the Chinese word for "martial arts" is "wu shu" but in modern China 'wu shu' refers to martial arts done for theater rather than combat. "karate" can mean either 'China hand " or "empty hand" in Okinawan and the masters said it meant 'empty' in the sense of being free of preconception , expectations or anger.
Karate is a mixture of Chinese art and native Okinawan "te" or "tode". Some karate styles such as Shotokan and kyukushinkai are straight forward , power oriented, "hard" styles. goju ryu is much more circular- lot of the 'softer' kung fu in it. That does NOT mean a good goju man can't hit like a cannon- he can. But they emphasize speed and mobility. There is a lot of emphasis on ki or chi , internal power, in goju. Styles like shuri ryu and shorin ryu are 'harder' and more linear than goju but softer than shotokan or kyukushinkai.
I have not studied shotokan in 40 years; some say it has become more mobility oriented than it was then.

Kung fu a life style as much as an art in that you must be the healthiest and strongest you can be and have "the kung fu mindset". I know that perseverance is taught in all martial arts but the philosophy of kung fu is extremely important to training kung fu.

From personal experience I would say it is how the style is taught rather than the style itself. In the UK most (that I've seen) karate schools tend to be focussed on slower movements, perfecting the action rather than the impact. The kung fu I've seen has been, by comparison, about being useful and effective in the real world. Putting that aside the linear movement of karate doesn't fair so well in close proximity or where the surround space is restricted while the kung fu styles I've worked with are pretty much dependent on it. Good to know both :)

Thank you for this video, which clarifies a lot for beginners. I might add, that Wushu also refers to any Chinese martial arts style. So the big term system of Wushu can be compared with the Japanese system of Budo, which also includes a lot of styles. What is mostly shown in movies is a modern, athletic Wushu, so In short, you may refer to modern Wushu simply as Wushu. Personally I found Wushu Training much more satisfying than my Karate training, because it fits me better at was more fun. I am no fighter but I had some situations of self defense - my Karate and my Judo sucked there, after I started Wushu (which also included Taiji Quan) I defended myself and others successfully with Taijiquan (which is also included in the big term of the more than 100 wushu systems). It luckily never had been a real frighting situation, things like defending from a pickpocket or some drunk guys.

I took a few lessons in Marshal Arts (maybe 3 or 4 times) when I was in my 20's and in the very first bout, I could not help but kick my instructors behind in seconds and the 2nd instructor, it was in part that they made a grave error in their arrogant assessment and underestimating of me, a serious mistake to never make in fighting. I was a seriously (seasoned-in) experienced street fighter and faster than "greased-lightening" and I had that internal-power-force (Berserker) strength second to none! When I was in my 40's I gave lessons to my oldest Son when he was in the 1st grade of elementary school, because a bully was beating him up. I taught self defense and movements, how to strike a hard effective blow, but the very most important part was to teach and pass on to him, was the "Internal- Spirit" that makes a fighter/winner. Without this, it can all just be mental exercise and social status and build a little self confidence. I also had him read "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu. Well my Son came home with a good win and was never bullied again as was expected.

Later, when we were in college, he took leassons in Tang Lang Kung Fu ("praying mantis style") and he often talked about how different it was to Jiu Jitsu and that his experience with Jiu Jitsu didn't really make it easier for him to learn Tang Lang as even the way you're trained basic techniques is totally different in these two martial arts.

The most obvious difference in my opinion is the much closer fighting distance in Kong fu. This is the style for defnding oneself on 30cm distance and going in close as quickly as possible, thus making a plethora of techniques from other styles not applicable/ forcing the opponent to be 100% defensive if there is even time for that reflex. Karate feels more like being centered around standing steady in a broad, low stance,as a means of being defnsive in the first place, while Kong fu/kung fu are spending more time in the dojo with just hitting fucking hard and fast. I have trained both.

I agree. It really depends on who is fighting who. I used to watch Denis Alexio and many others in the 80's and 90's and most of them would knock all of these kungfu artists out. But , you know how it is for individuals fighting and how it's really who vs who. The fight itself is dependent upon where it is. Is it in the ring or is it self defense? In other words the purpose of the particular martial art chosen is also very important.
Take for instance the taekwondo practitioner. That is someone that you would never want to try and jump. Those guys are lethal when it comes to multiple attackers. It's almost like they get better in thug situations. Whereas in the ring they might not be as good because 1vs1 fights are different. So every fighting location or situation has a martial art that would be better for it over another martial art.
Then it comes down to who is training you. Depending on who it is., They could turn a nobody into a somebody or unfortunately the one that is the trainee could get worse if the trainer you have is not nearly as experienced as the trainer your opponent has, Take for instance. Cus d'amato in boxing. That man was literally training warriors and each of his fighters had a significant advantage over other fighters with trainers who were far worse and that's most of them in comparison.
