  • In the Movie "Overlord" as the Americans are sent in to destroy a tower, the German forces were conducting strange experiments deep within an underground portion of a church. By pure chance, the Americans end up stumbling across this and seeing first hand, what this Tar Serum is capable that the Germans were working on. As a skirmish breaks out, it becomes clear, those infected, are no longer human. But what makes them so powerful and how does it affect human physiology? lets discuss that in todays episode!

    The head reminds me of Lovecraft’s story “Herbert West, the Reanimator.” West served in WW1 as a field surgeon and secretly experimented on the corpses. One of the corpses was a decapitated pilot, which he saw as a perfect opportunity to test his serum on a disfigured subject. He operated on the headless body and succeeded in reanimated it but the severed head remotely reanimated as well and screamed as he was re-enacting his final moments. Scared shitless by the fact the experiment produced a result that he couldn’t scientifically explain, West went home and spent the rest of his days as a recluse until the day all of his experiments, led by the headless man, found him and killed him.

Though honestly I like the movie without a sequel because you know that they were going to explain the tar more and I hate that horror is better when you don’t know what it is the unknown is more frightening then what your brain can figure out. Also it sort of did though I would call those zombies more ghouls as some seem to have intelligence as we saw with the French womens head.

    14:35 im not so certain about increased strength, i think what happens here may actually be hysterical strength. Know how you occasionally hear stories of people displaying superhuman strength during moments of extreme danger to someone they care for? Normally, the human body has built in neural safe-guards that are meant to stop us from injuring ourselves by over-exerting our muscles, these safe-guards come in the form of pain, use a muscle too intensely all at once, its gonna hurt like hell, and maybe even do damage to other tissues, but with practice, determination, a shit-load of will-power, or a huge dose of adrenaline to the body, these safe-guards can be ignored or overridden. I think whats happening here with the strength increase is actually the typical pain feedback we get from over-exerting ourselves being nullified along with the pain receptors in the nervous system, so hes actively injuring himself by using his full bodily strength, but doesn't realize it, because he can't feel the pain of torn, sprained, or pulled muscles, or broken or fractured bones.

    • @libertyprime1614
      @libertyprime1614 3 года назад +6

      Adrenaline increases muscle fiber recruitment and endurance, this will affect strength in compound movements such as squats, deadlifts, pullups, etc, but in isolation movements such as bicep curl increase in strength from adrenaline barely noticeable, because our nervous system already can recruitment most since there is not a lot of muscles to wor with from the beginning. This also explains why exercising you can increase your deadlifts 3-4 times but bicep curl may grow only 50% for the same amount of time, your nervous system just learned to recruit more muscle fibers, but for bicep curls, only muscle growth can help.
      Back to our mutants, they seem to possess a higher level of strength even than Olympic class athletes, including in isolated movements (when Wafner lifts Chase with one arm hr essentially performs deltoid raise and deltoids are quite small muscles) which would tear joints and ligaments in singular forceful movement rendering them immobile pain or not, thus I believe without some musculoskeletal system tissue reinforcement they wouldn't be able to achieve that level of strength, besides they also possess healing factor.

    • @Lustie
      @Lustie 2 года назад +3

      Well it’s the lactic acid that is the self defense mechanism to stop using an increased strength to continue to use that muscle.
      It’s the muscle itself tearing which is where the pain comes from. I don’t know if that can classify as a self defensive mechanism compared to lactic acid consider a lot of people push their muscles when in pain regardless where as enough lactic acid buildup will literally “shut” down or temporarily halt muscle contractions wether you want it too or not.

    • @theshermantanker7043
      @theshermantanker7043 2 года назад

      An important thing people often seem to never get is that hysterical strength is not an adrenal rush, it's a massive hormonal cocktail that cascades more drastically the longer it's on. The neural inhibitors, though a large factor in this, isn't the only one. The force generated by muscles themselves also actually skyrockets when the right conditions are met. Some of these are due to tetanic contractions, but we actually know surprisingly little about this, whether this also involves changes to the actin-myosin arrays or not

      Probably by figuring out what chemical compounds the fungus (or rather the secretions from fungus enveloped individuals) is using to induce changes and concocting a man made substance that uses those chemicals. Basically the biological agenda of the organism itself needs to somehow be eliminated if you don't want your super soldier to be entirely consumed by it. Also a way to trick the immune system of your living soldier into accepting it so their brain isn't crushed by the resulting meningitis as the body just goes nuclear trying to fight the foreign entity.
      I would love to hear Roanoke's take on this though. Perhaps in a video that's straight up about the perfected version of this basically being the Super Soldier Serum from Captain America? Yeah, Roanoke should explain to us how Captain America could hypothetically work.

    Here's my thinking on the serum:
    This movie was made by the same guy who did Cloverfield. In fact, before Overlord was released there was speculation that it occurred in the same universe. The director denied it, but there is a substance in the Cloverfield universe that's similar to the Tar serum (though I don't think it's ever seen on camera). I think Roanoke even talked about it in another video, saying that it promoted cellular growth, enhanced physical abilities & caused mutations. The Cloverfield monster fed on this substance, which was why it was able to grow so large, and like the Tar serum it came from an underground source. So to me it seems like Overlord really is a prequel to Cloverfield where nazis discovered another deposit of the 'seabed nectar' I think it was called, and that the reanimation, aggression, and super human strength we see are the effects that the substance that made the Cloverfield monster would have on humans.

    I've seen almost every movie you've done and STILL love hearing the breakdown from you, so well done. Absolutely love your content.

    While I can agree that the tar is a fungus, I’m still thinking it’s supernatural to some degree because of the whole “head on a spine being able to talk” and because historically Nazis were known to be into the occult

    So, what I'm learning from this is that should the Nazis weaponize the serum at that stage of development then the soldiers wouldn't last long in a prolonged campaign or skirmish as either they would die from explosive ordnance or from their own bodies deteriorating from the effects. They would eventually be a threat to each other as they would to the Allies. It kinda begs the question: what would require the Nazis to try and keep the positive side of the effects (coming back to life, increased strength and healing) while negating the negative side (insanity, muscle and bone distortions, heart and brain overuse and eventual collapse due to nervous system breakdown)?

    Loved the movie. My only gripe with it is that as an airborne trooper myself, the MC tried to pull his parachute behind him (which is literally impossible) instead of pulling that reserve chute right there on his chest. Also I doubt that officer is a patrol leader, from what I could tell, he's a base commander. Otherwise, great video!
