Great to see Craig replying to people. I been a subscriber here before he got 1000 subs and asked about 10 questions so far and never got a reply. Glad to see the engagement with the audience
@@craigneidel Personally..this is why I follow you! You're one of the VERY few who actually respond back to people asking questions and giving their ideas/thoughts. Of course, I understand just deleting or ignoring trolls too lol.
Yes, I have determined trolls are the worst people in society. They hide behind a fake name and just call people out. These people would not do that to somebody's face but it's easy online. I like people like you who like to have a real conversation for sure. You actually add value...
Thanks for the heads up on the Micro Center deals! I saved $200 on an M4 Pro 14/20 48gb 1 TB even with MA taxes since there is another $99 instant discount if you open their credit card. Had difficulty choosing 48 vs 24 but the savings helped to ease the decision to go with more. Appreciate your channel!
Another great video! Well done. I got a MacMini M4 Pro with 24GB memory and 1TB of SSD. I am getting 5000MBps in read and 6380MBps in write. Which kind of surprised me as I thought 'read' would be higher than 'write'. I also have an external NVMe. I went with the Zike TB4 enclosure that you also use in your video and I am running a Crucial P3 Plus 4TB NVMe, which is fast enough for me. It gives me 3000MBps write and 2400MBps read. I bought some velcro strips and stuck it to the back of my monitor since I don't need it on my desk and it will always stay attached. I am very happy with the setup and the overall performance of my MM M4Pro. Looking forward to more great content from you!
Yes, the SSD will be faster in that one with the 1 TB ssd in it. As for the external I was surprised I'm getting close to 3,500 MB/s and it means I most likely would not need the Thunderbolt 5 enclosures but I have a Mac channel so might test those anyway.
I went with an M4 Pro because of my multi tasking. I’ll be converting a video in Handbrake, working in DaVinci Resolve, Photoshop, listening to music, I’ll have a few RUclips tabs open in Safari, iMessage and Mail open, running dual monitors, and dumping files in a Synology without a hiccup. I went with the full upgraded cpu and GPU, 48 gigs of ram and 512SSD and I have yet to hit the ceiling on the ram doing all that multi tasking. I tend to get to about 38gigs of ram usage. Absolutely stunned by this machine.
Yes, it helps when you have all that going but I just need time to confirm it helps my workflow. I didn't need 48 GB of ram plus I go through them fairly quickly for my channel.
@@craigneidel The problem with the Silicon ecosystem is the upgrade tiers soon bring you up to the next model in the range, or indeed a new range. Speccing up the Mini M4 Pro even a notch on memory and/or storage gets it close to the Mac Studio. With Education Store discount, I'd expect the Studio M4 Max to smoke the Pro for not much additional outlay. If you don't need the Mini M4 Pro now, I'd hold onto your money until the Studio M4 Max is announced.
I did need it with 130 videos per year. Even 4 to 5 hours per month means a huge saving in time and money at the end of the year. It could be much more than that too.
make exactly the same workload but instead davinci i use engineer software 16go ram can work and here you are probably doing a personal montage no interest but with Apple marketing people never buy the basic model you absolutely have to be pro and want to brag
@ TechGameDev RUclips is always full of these "Return Window" upgrade videos, and model swaps in the first weeks and months of a new release. Maybe Apple are a little too generous allowing all these returns at times, then again, they can afford to be.
My previous Mac mini was a base-model with no upgrade. It was a bad choice because of the SSD and RAM but also because evrything was clucky. This time I won't make the mistake again and I will buy a M4 Pro Mac mini. Thanks for your video, that confirm my analysis.
If you are doing editing, 3d, music, etc. the Pro could be needed for the best experience but the M4 standard is still good enough for 90% of people hands down. It's really good.
@@TechnoBoomer Good move! The base M4 Pro has both the right amount of RAM/Storage combo in addition to greater performance whether you need it or not. I'll likely never really stress the computer but it’s good to know the capability is there when needed.
@@TechnoBoomer no one could blame you as all the RUclipsrs. Said 8 GB was enough and as good as 16 on windows. It's not all things being equal. This was made worse when apple put slower ssds in the base model à it was used. As scratch ram when memory ran out adding wear to it. Not only that at the time nothing could be upgraded and there was a fight for memory from the npu gpu. CPU and ports and displays osx apps etc. We all know better now. And in some cases the base minis can have the SSD upgraded at a later date.
Woah, honestly wasn't expecting this and was thinking you were going to stick with the. M4 base with a higher spec. But that M4 Pro Mac Mini is a beast! And I Love the form factor. Nice work, Craig! This machine is more than enough in my opinion.
Yes, it's for the channel not because I needed it. But I do want to find out how much time it saves me since I do 130 videos per year. We will see over the next few months.
I also picked up the M4 Pro from Micro Center, here is something I noticed right away - the disk utility listed the Apple Fabric Internal Physical disk as 500.28 GB and the Container disk3 was 494.38 GB which is I guess the actual amount I could use if filled up all the way. I have a Graugear external enclosure USB 4 with a OWC TB 5 Cable going into the USB TB 5 port, the speed using Blackmagic averages 3431.9 Write and 3401.7 Read speeds when using a WD Black SN770 1TB M.2 2280. The internal apple disk comes up with 4338.5 Write and 5206.8 Read. Both disks are new and have very little used space. I have noticed the M.2 external disk loads right behind seeing the internal show up on the desktop and a few seconds later the other externals show up as they are older SATA 3.5" drives which average around 200 write and read speeds when attached with an apple TB2 adapter to TB3. The only thing I am not sure how to test further is if my monitor or Mac does not like the sleep mode. When I leave the computer for 10 minutes or so and the sleep mode comes on the attached external disks show a message that they were disconnected incorrectly however the disks are still showing on the desktop and I can still access them like nothing was disconnected. Once I had a message that an error occurred and the Mac restarted. However the same application I was using still worked fine.
That can happen with external sometimes and some enclosures do it more often. Thanks for all the info in your post. Interesting data for people to review.
I got a M4 Pro with 48G Ram and it absolutely rips! ... first time with a Mac Desktop (have an ipad etc). Im super impressed with the snappy performance overall, fluid GUI and whisper quiet performance. Im still getting used to MacOS, but i am liking it, and can do what i need, use Parallels with W11 for some things which also works amazingly ... I have to say the extra ram was totally worthwhile once you start running lots of programs plus Windows on parallels. :)
Sister gifted me a base iMac for Christmas. Returned it and went with the base Mini M4P, that was the easy decision, the hard decision is finding a damn monitor! But I may just go with the BenQ MA320U, I do mainly photo editing and light video work
@ for sure. For me atleast, my decision was between an older gen Mac Studio base vs the m4 pro I was worried it wouldn’t perform when it came to gpu performance for Final Cut. I was pleasantly surprised that this video that wouldn’t even play on my old iMac. The mini was able chug right through with barely any frame drops on preview. So overall. The mini and m4 chips are fantastic and efficient chips.
Yes, both the M4 and M4 Pro are great machines. I'm just showing how well the Pro will work over the base for a smaller RUclipsr with about 40K subs. We will see soon.
I bought the base M4 for editing my RUclips videos, but ended up exchanging it for an M4Pro 14/20 - as you say, in normal use there is no difference, but if you use more or heavier effects in FCP there’s a big difference.
I'm a subscriber to your excellent channel, and thank you for another great informative video! (I also own an M4Pro Mac Mini). At around the 9:39-minute mark, you talk about the observation that your "Zike/ Western Digital SSD" was able to get approximately 400-500MB/s faster read/write speeds when plugged into the Thunderbolt 5 ports of the M4Pro versus the Thunderbolt 4 ports on the base M4 model. Even though the Zike enclosure is only rated for Thunderbolt 4 ports, and thus should not make that much of a difference plugging it into Thunderbolt 5... I want to shed some light on this and why it is most probably happening. When you run the Black Magic Speed test (or any software for that matter), the software is "talking" to the CPU, which then communicates with the unified RAM and the SSD. So when the data is written to the SSD (the test file) and read back again, it is communicated to the CPU via the RAM and finally, the results are displayed in the Black Magic app. The difference you are getting here (faster read and write speeds) is because the M4Pro also has another big advantage over the M4 base model... The SPEED of the unified memory in the M4Pro (the memory bandwidth) is more than twice as fast as the RAM in the M4 base model (According to Apple's specs... 273GB/s Versus 120GB/s). That faster RAM speed would account for the faster SSD speeds. You can have an extremely fast SSD... But if your RAM is slow (a bottleneck), then the corresponding read and write speeds will also be less.
Thank you for the input. Yes, the unified memory is a bit over 2x as fast so that could be something also. All the info helps people so thanks for the post again and for watching the channel.
The performance of my M4 16gig has been pleasantly great even while I run three AI dictation apps and the Arc web browser which consumes high CPU. My mini reboots in under a minutes, and about two dozen apps reopen in less three minutes. But now you have me wanting the Pro because it’s even faster. I don’t do as much video production as you do, but I want to take advantage of the speed that it offers.
We will see how much time it really saves me over the next month or so. If the M4 is working now maybe wait for me pro and sell M4 for a high price then. But I too felt standard m4 was fine but for channel and curiosity I upgraded to see how much it saves.
@@craigneidel Great staff too! But I terminated my creditcard the day before I bought it. Now you get and additional discount with a MicroCenter credit card which is great. But I don't like dealing with Wells Fargo. You have to have your routing # and account # handy. You can't pay with your Debit card like any other bill. And It's a hassle to deal with them. But even Wells Fargo won't keep me away from MicroCenter! Bought a great Dock for it too! I am extremely happy with the purchase and the sales crew. Peace.
15:34 r when you do a rendering you don't have to stay in front of the Mac you can use it to continue doing work, something else, rest etc. for example the time gained loading, addition of effects to accumulation it is calculable
Yes, but I'm talking about things like stabilization etc. that may take 20 seconds quicker here and 30 seconds quicker there. Over the course of a year and with 130 videos I can save way more time than a few hundred dollars worth....
Great video. I'm still using a 2020 M1 Mac Mini with min specs (8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD) for my home recording studio, and while Logic Pro 10 worked on it flawlessly, Logic Pro 11 can max out some of the cores with its AI musicians. Logic will let you "freeze" tracks, so that's a good workaround, but I do think that I'll need upgrade at some point in time.
Even if it isnt turning the fans on now ... i had 2017 macbook pro who was silent at first then after three years, it got loud and hot to the degree i could listen to it and sold it .
I always wanted a Leica M6 35mm still camera growing up, but never saved up for one. Thats why I'm waiting for the Apple M6 Studio (no lie). To finally own an "M6".
This is still on my radar, though actually making use of my M3 MacBook Pro now I have the Studio Display (it was still the best choice despite the other options currently on the market for a 5K display) the itch to get a new mini isn't as strong lol. I retired my 2013 27" iMac for this set up but rarely need to compute on the go, and if I do my iPad Pro is more than enough. I'm looking forward to see what they do with the refreshed Studio with the M4 Ultras!
Yes, the refreshed studio will be interesting but it's going to be for a very select few that need it. I think the mini is filling a good void but for some it could be a good buy (studio). I love the studio display....
You should buy the replacement 2tb internal ssd that 2 companies are producing cheaper than apple. (Reportedly faster than apples ssd) Upgrade the m4 and use the m4 pro to restore the os on the blank 2 tb drive in the m4. You don't need the external unless you want even more storage.
@craigneidel No ones reported any issues so far, and you still have the original you could put back should any occur. I'm waiting to see if they produce an external connector like a dock for these. People could then if they wish, wipe the original of personal data and sell it on, making some money back, like on a 512b or 1 tb. Its good to see companies undercutting apples storage prices. Fairer on consumers.
One issue is the warranty would be void if Apple finds out and it could be stored somewhere that you changed it out even if you put back the originals. So still waiting on that info.
I also have the RayCue hub on order. In the mean time I'm using my Blackmagicdesign eGPU Pro as a hub. Since it’s not capable of being an external GPU for Apple silicon, it’s still useful as a hub, looking great while being useful. Fortunately, I bought it on eBay a couple of years ago for $600 in mint condition. I was still using the Intel MM and the BMD Pro made a difference in graphics. That was then and now it’s a humble but very cool looking hub.
My raycue dock just came today, I haven't setup mine yet. But I will make a request for when you make your raycue reviews. 1. Test the ssd speed with the supplied cable vs a certified thunderbolt 5 cable. 2 test the ssd speed with optional power source (15v) it's labeled as charge port, but the website clearly stated it was for additional power, and without it may limit performance. Just a request
I'll see what I can do but may not get everything. No need for thunderbolt 5 cable as it only 10 Gbps but I can test with thunderbolt 4 cable or better one
I received my RayCue hub today. Fantastic! Looks and works great. Although one of the screws was difficult to remove to open the NVMe space. Once I did everything works great! Very pleased with it. The hub completes my setup.
I ran an M4: alongside an M4 pro for a month. When running benchmarks or a beefy VM the fan in the M4 pro powers up and it is LOUD .... CPU temps also went over 100 degrees C 🤨🤨
I have a bunch of videos on that. I normally use an external enclosure like one by Qwiizlab or Zike and install my own SSD in there. I have a ton of videos on that in the last few months if you search my channel. But you really don't need anything crazy fast for backups so for that even a T7 from Samsung is fine etc.
Thanks, some people are just not that nice so I like to explain why I do what I do. I do this for the channel not because I need 10 macs. It's a business more or less that I love to do but I need to spend money in the business or then I'm just talking without real world experience.
@@readwriter no worries. I believe you and sometimes I assume things since I get a bunch of trolls who say crazy things. If just a joke no worries as I believe that and no hard feelings at all. I was just on edge as you can imagine the crazy comments I get. I hide users so nobody has to see them. In any case my fault and no worries.
One thing that could be different between M4 and M4 Pro is compressing files on the internal drive. I compressed a 10GB folder and it seemed like it took my Mac Mini (non-pro) a while. Not even sure if it was faster than my 2019 16" Intel MacBook Pro.
My guess about external disk speed difference. When you connect thunderbolt 4 or 5 no difference. they both use your cpu inside . If your cpu faster you can hit your hardware limits more easier. I believe definitely thunderbird use .cpu computation. you can check with cpu temperature going up or not when you read or write.
6:08 Hi Craig, great video. Why is there a speed difference between 512g 1t, 2t… etc. Basically I’m asking if there is a incremental difference the higher the drive size? I was set on M4P with 512 but maybe I should get 1t - I’m using it for LLM work. I also will bump up the memory to 48g Thank you!
@@JenkinsUSA yes there is an incremental increase as drive increase in size. I think ape does this on purpose but some SSD do have better performance as sizes go up.
@ Thank you for your reply. I suppose there is a method to their madness or madness to their method. Referring to the apple tax. I’m sold on the MM4 Pro, trying to keep it under 1800ish. I’m definitely getting the upgraded network port so I can repurposed it later. Thanks!
i'm about to place an order for a 32GB/1TB M4 Mac mini (non pro as people are saying it's quieter, and I'm coming from a PC with an i7 14700K so I will get a big uplift in single core) and I'm going to attach an 8TB Samsung SATA SSD to it. I don't do any work that requires super fast SSD speeds so am happy with the 500MB/s or so SATA will provide. If I need it, I have a few NVME drives lying around if it ends up that I need the speed. Can anyone think of any downsides to this? Thanks for the upload, Craig. Great informative video!
No downsides. That will be an awesome system just compare pricing on that vs M4 pro and if you are saving good amount that will be a incredible system.
going for the pro was wise. I finally upgraded from my 2017 iMac 5k 27" and got the Mac mini Pro with 1Tb internal ssd and a 4Tb external. The Pro is incredibly fast -- internal speeds at BlackMagic limits. I only do photos . rarely videos. Loving your updates and revives. UPDATE 3rd Feb'25 : I'm returning th euro to get another, but this time with the 4Tb internal SSD. Why you ask? It's' not that the cost sucks. mY iMac has 3Tb Fusion Drive, and it's taken me a week to move data - mostly docs and images to get the Migration wizard to transfer everything. Thats ok. I spent many day paring down my files ...nor of the 1Tb I'm down to just 108Gb used - OS and system use just under 80Gb. Plenty of room? well my image files are 212Mb so yes....but I can see when I'll be squeezing it with 1Tb and while the eternal SSD is good...MY preference is to get it dome internally. so I'll send it back and get another Mini Pro with the 4Tb ssd
Thanks for the feedback. For the channel I wanted to do this and I'll see how much time I save on my 130 videos per year. It could make a good difference but the jury is still out on the M4 Pro mini.
Same here. Coming from a late 2014 27" 5K iMac. After much research I went with the Mac Mini Pro, 1TB / 48GB and 4TB NM790 external drive. Really happy with the performance, and getting ~3400MBps on my external (compared to 2900MBps when connected to my M2 MacBook. Also went with the Dell 4K monitor, which actually looks better than my old iMac 27" retina 5K, at the same 1440p resolution (so 1.5 scaling), also allowing me to connect to the Mac Mini via a single USB-C with my USB-A keyboard and label printer connected to the monitor's USB hub. Super happy!
Of course but if you do 130 videos per year and save 50 hours per year that is well worth more than $300 bucks or so. Also, I got this for $1,199 on sale. Have to be realistic when you job is making videos.
@@graphguy I agree, the M4 is more than fine for 95% of users. Some of us are in the 5% of users who prefer the extra performance of the M4 Pro to make their graphical tasks quicker. 🤓
I got the m4 512gb in the uk, but since i purchased from amazon , I got a £40 discount. So, its as if i paid £160 for the extra internal storage. Its not cheap, but it was worth the upgrade.
Thanks for another great video. Looking forward to your further thoughts and testing on the m4 pro. This is the model I am looking to possibly purchase and was glad to hear that you observed better WiFi performance. Was that with the longer cable seen in the video. If so would you recommend this specific cable or any other in particular? I’ve seen others recommend “well shielded” cables in regards to the WiFi issue. How would I differentiate a well shielded cable from any other?
Thank you. These were just initial thoughts without much scientific testing yet. But as I figure things out I'll try and post them in future videos on cables and stuff like that. I was just testing a bunch of stuff quickly in first 2 or 3 days.
I'm looking at upgrading to an M4 Pro Mac mini, I do gaming and streaming on Twitch and wondering if I should do the $200 upgrade to the higher core Pro setup. I know the Studio is probably being updated as well before I purchase, but I am trying to save some money as I have tended to always spend $2k or more when I upgrade, and this would be the first time spending a decent amount under that and being a big upgrade going from an M1 iMac.
I would say if you are worried about it and if you make money from this then go with the Pro. When you do things like streaming and using programs like that the CPU power won't hurt at all. The main thing here is that you make enough money to justify it. If just for fun I would go with standard M4.
Well, unless you need the Pro version, if you’ve got some extra cash to burn-why not? The Mac Mini M4 is still a total powerhouse for students. My son’s rocking the 24GB RAM, 512GB storage version, and it’s buttery smooth and ridiculously fast for all his school projects-no lag, no drama, just pure performance. Oh, and speaking of Mac Mini M4, you have to check out the Zeera MacForge Gen 2. It looks absolutely sick. I saw it, couldn’t resist, and immediately ordered one.
Yes, but it's actually to save cash. If you know about my channel I'm all for saving money but for the channel I got the M4 Pro to test it. I do about 130 videos per year and spend like 2,000 hours and if it can free up a percentage of that time, even small, it can save me way more than the few hundred dollar upgrade. So that is what I'm trying to figure out now.
Hey Craig, I forgot to ask, how was it compare to your M2 Air so far? I know you have it down the pipe line (hopefully a video coming up on it) but was just wondering if it really is that much snappier and better. Thanks!
For day to day stuff there won't be a huge difference but I'm still testing for a month or so to be sure. But some things pertaining to my channel appear to be much faster but again still researching now.
Purchasing from Micro Center, were you able to customize your settings. From 512gb and upgrade to 2TB or 4TB? Also will I need new Thunderbolt cables for my external peripherals; Time Machine, scanner, USB hub, etc?
Nice video.Craig what is your opinion about the new 5K oled monitors for productivity Are they worth it or they are a risky investment? I struggle finding a BIG monitor for music production all the 43 are mediocre and BGR subpixel layout
Great video. Would an m4 pro chip in a mac mini be better for using word online. Im putting together a manuscript for a nivel andbi get a lot of lag on my MacBo Did ok air m2;which jas 24 gb of ram.
M4 is cool but definately overkill, I wanted a M2 MBP & settled for M1 Max & was blown away.. The only thing that's even been able to trigger my fan was either Gaming with Codeweavers Crossover or Using AI Colour Match in Premiere Pro.. Apple Silicon is incredible
Overkill is the point. Finally, we have a system that, for me, is my last Mac! I bought the M4 Pro precisely so that I wouldn’t be lured into yet another upgrade decision. We finally have a home computer so fast that it doesn’t matter what Apple comes out with. I, myself, will never be doing anything that will require more power than what the M4Pro provides. Even if I do, what will happen? I may have to wait a few seconds/minutes longer but so what! I've been using a personal computer since the Apple II+ and have always had to upgrade because things just got faster or better graphics or whatever. Now, we have finally hit computer nirvana. The graphics are 4K at least, the system is faster than greased lightning! So, what more do I need? Literally, nothing. I’m talking about my needs. Others may need or want more which is fine, but I can stop chasing the technology. It has arrived!
6:50 I get 3355 read, and 3020 on the right with my M1 mac mini, it seems odd the M4 is only marginally faster. I get the same speeds on my external drive as well
My pro is running at about 950 Mbps on a WiFi 7 router 6Ghz band which is one floor below the router….only pulling about 450 Mbps on the 5 GHz band at same distance. Those who have a WiFi 7 router will notice an amazingly huge difference in speed if placed on the 6 GHz band.
@craigneidel My PC has an threadripper, 128 GB RAM, 20TB NVMe etc... and was much more reasonably priced. Not to mention that I've been able to upgrade it several times as I saw fit... and I didn't have to have a tangle of thunderbolt cables and hubs and external SSD enclosures, etc. all over the place.
This is a weird question what if you turn the usb connection upside down and see if speed changes, just one end at the iMac Mini and leave the end at the external ssd plug in and do not the sub connection so in other wards the cable will have a 1/2 twist in the Cable? I was watching another person and he talked about different speeds from usb 3.1 3.2 using different connectors just a thought
I can try that but so far I tested like 7 cables etc. and various positions. If you place the mini on it's side it gets better but most won't want to do that.
@@craigneidel i wish i could explain this better i can not find the person i watch the video on so you could watch and understand what i am talking about. i am not a computer person i mean my experience would be like a pimple on a Nates ass. and that is small i am just a retired usaf jet engine machine. thank you for reply peace
Good luck with raycue I strip screws out trying get it open to put ssd inside. I have no ideal how to get them out? Trying to return. Does not go back to Amazon. To the seller.
I do zero video or photo work on my Macs with that I will say I can't tell much difference between my 16GB M1 and my M2 Pro Mini's. Have seen a few comments on MR that users are not seeing any difference in day to day use in their M2 Pro vs. M4 Pro Minis. (not video usage) says the M1 is still probably very good for most these days.
Yes for sure as most don't need the power. But, I do 130 videos a year and time can mean money and free time also. So I'm testing this out over the next 3 months to see if it's worth the extra costs. If not I'll tell people.
@@craigneidel Totally agree, if you are making money with a machine absolutely. I do with mine as well just no video / task intensive apps. All single core stuff!!
For 99% of people who are not professional video editors or software developers, there would be absolutely no benefit to getting the M4 Pro vs the regular M4. The only reason for regular consumers to get the M4 Pro: - you want the best (not that you need it) - future-proofing (you plan to keep it for 10 years) - you are upgrading the base model to the point where it’s better value for money to get the M4 Pro (i.e. Apple gotcha).
99% is not true. But about 85% for sure. If you do editing or things where time is money it can make a difference. For example I do 130 videos per year. Many do the same but it's about 10% at most and then others might be doing music production or things where they need more tracks etc. Yes, if you want my channel I say almost everybody should get the M4 but there are reason to get the M4 Pro. Now the Max is even a smaller crowd...
I have never actually bought a computer because I absolutely need it except the first one. All other computer I had to buy because I wanted it, I never maxed out a computers performance any more than I would max out a Mclaren race car. Pure lust is the only reason I bought way more computer than I ever actually needed.
I agree. Ever since my first computer, an Apple II+, it has always been an issue of trying to keep up. The M4Pro finally solves that issue. Whatever Apple does next is not going to matter because the M4Pro more than meets my needs now and going forward.
@@craigneidel My post was intend to tell you that you owe no explanation for wanting better even if you don't actually need it. Keep up the good work. I remember paying $5,000.00 for a G5 and their big studiomoniter when my old g4 or g3 was more than capable of doing the job I had.
Not at all - In fact for over 50% of the things people do it will be the exact same speed as they have the same single core speed and most people use single core only. So that is not true at all. It will be faster for other workloads but it depends on what that is and that is why I'm testing it on my workload.
The M4 Pro MM has 273GB/s Memory Bandwidth and the M4 has only 120GB/s.. that can make things faster like WIFI, SSD and TB5 reducing the lag time when reading in and writing out data on the Bus. I upgraded to the Pro as well and noticed these speed differences also.. I made a video on tihis also because I have a M3 MBP Pro and it has a 150GB/s Bus.. Why would Apple slow down the Bus on a faster M4 chip compared to the M3 Pro chip? That is why I also went for the M4 Pro MM.. I love the M4 Pro and look forward to seeing your reviews on it !
Yes, the memory bandwidth is 2 x as fast but I just don't notice that for day to day stuff. I'm sure it will make a difference once I start testing more in the coming month.
A Mac with 16GB is now not enough with apple intelligence bloat. 24GB is the new min. Even apple know that as they moved the base level to 16GB. Don’t be fooled, it’s just how apple play you to get a low headline price.
My M4 was fine with 16 GB for sure. But I wanted to test this M4 Pro with 24 to see what I notice the differences are in my workload. Of course all workloads are different. I'll know more in a month or two.
they dont call it compcrap for nothing. Fiber all the way. We have base ATT, rated 300/300, getting 375/375. $40. Never flucuates. Uploading a TB of data... seconds.
My 3 year old M1 iMac 16GB / 512 GB was struggling with Lightroom Classic, after the v13 update. What i used to edit for a deadline in 30/45 min would take 2 hours. I got a faster Thunderbolt SSD for the catalog. No improvement. I got the base M4 Pro Mac Mini. Now Lightroom Classic flies fast. I almost regretted spending 400 dollars more for the M4 Pro. But now i think 8 made the good choice. Although the WiFi and Bluetooth connections seem to have a shorter range than the M1 iMac
@@craigneidel yeah - I have a printer in the closet in the next room. I need to connect to the printer wi-fi directly to print (I have T Mobile wireless home internet without a fixed IP) and it is a hit or miss. Also if i go to my kitchen with the bluetooth headphones, they often disconnect from the Mac Mini. The iMac had a much stronger connection. I wonder if some aftermarket antenna on the body of the mac mini could improve bluetooth and wifi.
It's just a quick one obviously. I just got it and I would do a real one later and I thought that was pretty clear in the video that I just got it and it's the initial findings. Not anything long term.

Thank you so much for all your videos! Looking forward to seeing your testing of the thunderbolt 5 external enclosures.
Thanks for the nice words. I should have a few videos on this over the next month or so.
@ TechGameDev
RUclips is always full of these "Return Window" upgrade videos, and model swaps in the first weeks and months of a new release.
Yes, that much ram I didn't need but I can imagine it's fast. I don't use Parallels but used to. I just have a pretty consistent workflow now.

@@The_Cali_Dude_88 the M4 pro is great but I still need to see if I needed to upgrade. A month or two.
Thank you again for another awesome video!

@@jonos138 yes may do video on that in future but waiting to see if any issues arise

Hey Craig, Thanks for the explanation.
Just got it so a quick one on initial thoughts but more to come.
Wow, $600 but at least you are still getting some use out of it. I just dropped a video on the Raycue yesterday.
Good review of the RayCue hub.
@Halo9K thanks
No need for thunderbolt 5 cable as it only 10 Gbps but I can test with thunderbolt 4 cable or better one
any update on the speed?
I received my RayCue hub today. Fantastic! Looks and works great. Although one of the screws was difficult to remove to open the NVMe space. Once I did everything works great! Very pleased with it. The hub completes my setup.
Composing music with the Pro verison makes a lot of sense compared to the Basic model.
Yes, in some cases that would be a nice upgrade depending on what level of composing etc.
Yes logic only uses the performance cores so performance will be more than double for large compositions.
No difference for smallers songs though
Ok, thanks.

@@JenkinsUSA yes there is an incremental increase as drive increase in size. I think ape does this on purpose but some SSD do have better performance as sizes go up.

i'm about to place an order for a 32GB/1TB M4 Mac mini (non pro as people are saying it's quieter, and I'm coming from a PC with an i7 14700K so I will get a big uplift in single core) and I'm going to attach an 8TB Samsung SATA SSD to it.
Thanks for all that info as it helps people watching the video. Thanks.
Of course but if you do 130 videos per year and save 50 hours per year that is well worth more than $300 bucks or so. Also, I got this for $1,199 on sale. Have to be realistic when you job is making videos.

It's 499 for the base M4 at Micro Center. Which is more than enough for "most" people.
Yes for a bunch of people that is the one they should get.
I would like all claims proved by using the activity monitor.
Run them side by side and lets see those numbers
I guess you make the rules now.
Hey Craig,
I forgot to ask, how was it compare to your M2 Air so far?
I know you have it down the pipe line (hopefully a video coming up on it) but was just wondering if it really is that much snappier and better.
Thanks!
For day to day stuff there won't be a huge difference but I'm still testing for a month or so to be sure. But some things pertaining to my channel appear to be much faster but again still researching now.
Heavy users of lightroom with te big 61 mp files need this system
Some might need it for sure.
Thanks Craig for the interesting video. Can you tell me what you have under the Apple Studio Display Stand and where I can buy it? Many thanks.
That's an iMac. It's a minisopuro hub and if you search my channel and look for that hub on iMac it should come up.
Thank you very much for your answer
thanks.
Thank You
You are welcome!
Purchasing from Micro Center, were you able to customize your settings. From 512gb and upgrade to 2TB or 4TB? Also will I need new Thunderbolt cables for my external peripherals; Time Machine, scanner, USB hub, etc?
You can get what they have on the website but not sure if you can customize. Maybe but they would need to order it.
Nice video.Craig what is your opinion about the new 5K oled monitors for productivity Are they worth it or they are a risky investment? I struggle finding a BIG monitor for music production all the 43 are mediocre and BGR subpixel layout
Where do you see 5k OLED monitors? Just curious as I have not seen those. Thanks for the post
Great video. Would an m4 pro chip in a mac mini be better for using word online. Im putting together a manuscript for a nivel andbi get a lot of lag on my MacBo
Did
ok air m2;which jas 24 gb of ram.
@@peterwright796 I think M4 chip is fast enough for that. With the correct ram you need. Thank you for watching.
8:56 I purchased the Zike drive with a Samsung 990 Evo Plus 2gb. Does the drive always run fairly hot even when not transferring files?
Mine is warm but not hot.
@@JayfkProductions876 yes it's fast but some do need fast cpus. More for editing and stuff like that. I have M2 air and love it
Overkill is the point.
Yes, they are getting very fast now and for most people that may not edit videos that get larger each year, they should be fine for a long while.
@@Halo9K Right on!
I would much rather have over kill than under kill..and for what? That price point! It's a REAL good deal in my opinion!
The faster memory bus speed may have bumped up the SSD speeds.
Yes, that could be is since the memory speed is 2x as fast.
The pro M4, I think has a faster memory speed, I will check on my 2, I bought both early on.
Yes, it's about 2 x as fast.
6:50 I get 3355 read, and 3020 on the right with my M1 mac mini, it seems odd the M4 is only marginally faster. I get the same speeds on my external drive as well
They are faster for sure. I have a M1 iMac and this M4 Pro is way faster with the heavy lifting for sure.
Craig, can I use this with my window's laptop. Will I find compatibility issues. Thanks
@@samantha1054 use what? The Mac...
Ok, thanks for the tip.
I just bought my first Mac, an M4 Pro Mac Mini with the 14 core CPU , 64GB RAM, 1 TB SSD. It's okay, but I'm used to much much more.
Funny, much more for what. You can do just about anything with that computer. What are you doing?
@craigneidel My PC has an threadripper, 128 GB RAM, 20TB NVMe etc... and was much more reasonably priced. Not to mention that I've been able to upgrade it several times as I saw fit... and I didn't have to have a tangle of thunderbolt cables and hubs and external SSD enclosures, etc. all over the place.
Again though, what are you doing with it. You can get the fasted computer in the world but it depends on what you are doing and if you really need it.
For sure and thanks for your service with the USAF.
Good luck with raycue I strip screws out trying get it open to put ssd inside. I have no ideal how to get them out? Trying to return. Does not go back to Amazon. To the seller.
We will see. I didn't have that issue at all but still testing.
Yes, I think that is the key on spending more.
17:37 Is it true that we need to have an m.2 SSD installed in order to use the Raycue hub?
I will need to check that out during my review.
For 99% of people who are not professional video editors or software developers, there would be absolutely no benefit to getting the M4 Pro vs the regular M4. The only reason for regular consumers to get the M4 Pro:
- you want the best (not that you need it)
- future-proofing (you plan to keep it for 10 years)
- you are upgrading the base model to the point where it’s better value for money to get the M4 Pro (i.e.
Yeah, this one I might need since I'm doing 130 videos per year. We will see though if the upgrade was worth it.
I agree. Ever since my first computer, an Apple II+, it has always been an issue of trying to keep up. The M4Pro finally solves that issue. Whatever Apple does next is not going to matter because the M4Pro more than meets my needs now and going forward.
The M4 pro is a powerhouse for sure....
@@craigneidel My post was intend to tell you that you owe no explanation for wanting better even if you don't actually need it. Keep up the good work. I remember paying $5,000.00 for a G5 and their big studiomoniter when my old g4 or g3 was more than capable of doing the job I had.
Thank you.

I'm sure I suggested a M4 Pro chip for you months ago... Teaser!
🧐😅
I didn't need it. It's for the channel and I will see what it can do over the next few months. If I can save time then I'll report back for sure.
Bought the all in one iMac 10&10cores w/32ram and just 512gb+ an external.
$2400
How do you like it
Anyone else torn between this or waiting for the next gen studio?
Studio will be nice but more money
why? because it's two times faster? :)
Your profile picture is from the last Century. Just saying. 😊
You are hiding behind a tiger and no picture or name... Just saying.
@@craigneidel LOL get em, Craig! 🔥
For sure.
they dont call it compcrap for nothing. Fiber all the way. We have base ATT, rated 300/300, getting 375/375. $40. Never flucuates. Uploading a TB of data... seconds.
Yeah we have what we have here
My 3 year old M1 iMac 16GB / 512 GB was struggling with Lightroom Classic, after the v13 update.
@@stefpix yes the wifi isn't great on these things but it sounds like you made the right choice on the chip
@stefpix yeah not a bad idea. I head I'd you put it on side it works better
@craigneidel i think raising it with a heat sink or some square block improves the connection. I put a small square plate upside down underneath
@stefpix be careful as metal underneath can really cause issues
Thanks for the video, your internet speed is shocking. I assume you are in a bad area but that must be a big bottleneck for you.
Yeah I mean the download is faster than most of the world but upload is capped. Per Comcast plan.
I cut straight to the M4 Pro...
I'm testing it to see how much time it really saves. 130 videos plus per year.
I don't know why they complain so much about space if they already sell 1TB SSDs for $170 dollars
Macs should have 512 base or 1 TB min still in my opinion but they don't.
I love your videos.
But your cost benefit analysis needs work.
It's just a quick one obviously. I just got it and I would do a real one later and I thought that was pretty clear in the video that I just got it and it's the initial findings. Not anything long term.
@ Honestly, I think your conversion of time savings into $ savings is iffy.
If that time savings means you can make more videos, then you will have a Revenue increase.
But that’s different than cost savings.
Funny, Ok.... I think people get what I mean.... Not sure what that matters here.
...and then the M5 comes out: ruclips.net/video/8ixabejG0O0/видео.html

OK you say for what you do with it. Well tell us what you do with it besides Talkinh Head Tatorials. Do you really use these M4 Mac Minis to make a Living besides U-TUBBY?
Yes I do. I use it for 100% of my revenue now.

you can solve anything unless you tear the computer apart I have been an apple and pc tech for over 30 years and we solve things buy taking it apart and seeing what went wrong its how things get fixed and how we find the problem. what he has shown we know already the M4 And M4Pro both have the same problem not as bad in the Pro but we need to know the cause so we can also know if the end user can fix it or if apple indeed will have to recall all sold and fix it its a clear warranty problem for sure but apple is not going to get things done anytime soon. now to be honest i never buy the newest tech off the block. for 1 i cant afford to and 2 i want to see the crap hit the fan first as well. and it would seem this one has a serious problem especially with the wifi first time this has ever happen it has other problems to but some will just be a software update but not the wifi..so far no other channels have done anything other then take it apart and go oh look this is a pile parts .. now im a varity channel my self but also i tear into stuff when need be.. and i wont spend also what i dont have , i have limited funds my self so far no issues with the M4 laptops at all. so that will be my investment but i wont give a nickel for a new mini and i love the minis but not when its got this going on and yet recommending something with a bad problem like this one has is not cool. need i say more so i was not tearing into him at all i like his channel but i have a RIGHT to ask Questions.. of the Poster but you had no right to come off on me when you also misunderstood. and keep your grammar stuff to yourself as well.
