I wrote “R.E. M.” on all of my book-covers in high school in the mid/early eighties. I developed the greatest group of friends by doing that. Saw the Reckoning, Life’ Pageant, Fables, etc tours with those same great friends. We formed a great band in high school and used to play covers of everything REM. Life was great.
This was my wedding song - I got married in a courthouse in 1991. It makes me happy and sad, my husband died in 2005. We saw REM together twice in 1995, they are still one of my favorite bands.
Delicate, melancholy, poignant. Apparently it was inspired by a moment when they were touring back in the Chronic Town period and Peter and Michael were on a pier overlooking a beach and Peter just started crying, and couldn't say why. That's the vibe of this song: beautiful sadness
I heard them live many times. Saw them in Athens when they popped up on stage at the 40 Watt or other bars. Went to many concerts in Atlanta at The Fox and symphony hall. Always magical.
Not to bum you out,at it's most beautiful,I played this at my Father and Brothers memorial,so fitting
I am speechless! Ok,fucking beautiful!

Neglected to credit Bill Berry as having written this song, so . . .

Those background melodies put this over the top for me. Just a fantastic song.
Me too, I think it makes it sound better than the original.

And those high notes by Mike Mills! Damn!
One of my favorite REM songs!
Possibly their greatest ❤.
What an amazing song that changed so many people's lives over the years. Astounding how well it sounds back in the early days.
Drink another coin a phrase. Brilliant!

Such a creative force was this band.

why couldn't they put this version on the album? Far superior (in my opinion anyway).
100% agree. I actually heard this version before I bought the album and was a bit deflated that it didn't sound as good (in my opinion)
Definitely, I love the piano in this version.
Cause this was filmed 6 years after Murmur was released lol
REM was always great but not as great after Bill Berry left, IMO. He wrote this song.
