    I've had the exact harp that was being played backwards. It was a cheap instrument with a twangy voice and a soundboard that cracked after only a few years of delicate use. I still own it but it's currently being used as an ornament in my mother's living room.
    I'm not ashamed to say that I let out an uncontrolled, high pitched cackle at that part of the video.

    • @alexharpist
      @alexharpist  3 года назад +1

      The real question is, did you also play it backwards and then film a music video of you doing so?
      I do think it’s a decorative little harp and totally works as an ornament! And, I’m extremely happy to hear about the cackle -a totally appropriate reaction to the backwards playing.

    Ya know I keep saying this to people, small instruments don’t mean cheaper. I have recently taken up harp and can buy several for the price of my gold flute. And the reason for choosing that metal isn’t because it looks pretty. It changes the sound of the instrument. Harps aren’t as expensive as a lot of instruments out there. Yeah the highest end concert harp makes a jump from other concert harps but on average cost less than my flute. The same holds true for many instruments. Bassoons for instance can cost $30,000. Flutes can easily get up to $60,000. Then there’s violins, etc, all of these cost more than most harps. But people see a big instrument and think oh my gosh they’re so expensive. And a small instrument like a flute must be cheap. Shoot a good low end student instrument costs a few grand. So your statement you “could’ve picked a lot of cool instruments for way cheaper,” only holds water if you’re going to get a crappy instrument. I keep trying to set people straight that of my instruments my smaller one is much more expensive than my bigger one! And in many ways much more difficult to play. You really can’t mess a harp up if it’s in tube. It just sounds pretty. No embouchure to have to worry about either. I think many harpists come off as harp snobs and have very little knowledge about what goes into other instruments or playing them.
    Camille and Kennelly call themselves the Harp Twins. (2 girls one harp) in parentheses was part of their SEO in their video title. Oh my gosh!🤣. The dude playing harp backward isn’t any different than Kennerly gosh they’re identical twins so maybe that was Camille playing backward. They are by the way very well known as Rock harpists. They were classically trained at Wheaton College conservatory of music. Yeah their movements are annoying but with all the films they’ve been in and singles they’ve covered as well as albums, they’re doing alright with the measly millions they make! They can be as creepy as they want!

    • @alexharpist
      @alexharpist  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching and taking an interest in my video, Sharon! It sounds like you haven't had great experiences with other harpists and that's truly unfortunate. A harp is definitely not the most expensive instrument, nor did I claim it to be. However, the upfront costs of learning to play this instrument are quite large if you want to be classically trained and if you want to own a quality harp. I made a joke about picking a cheaper instrument, but it's a large leap in logic to assume I believe an expensive item to hold more value and importance based off of that statement. There's a difference between playing something well and playing something in tune. You are correct -- a harp is always in tune as long as you've tuned it, but so is a piano or a guitar and those do not sound "pretty" unless you know what you're doing. All instruments are technically difficult to play if you want to be an advanced/expert player, so comparisons for difficulties of instruments is all relative and subjective based on your goals. But, I'm glad to hear you have the funds to own a flute more expensive than my harp! It's a luxury not many can afford.
      The harp twins are smart, no doubt about it! Their whole thing is to be a little weird and creepy while playing their instruments and it makes them money which is great for them. Haha! Definitely could've been a harp twin in disguise

    I'm a simple person, I see a critique on a well-known harp youtuber and I click. Glad to be with my people when it comes to the harp twins. Lol
    The youtube harpists I like to listen to are Stephanie Claussen, Oliver Wass, Joel Von Lerber, and Jacqueline Pollauf.
    As for the Toccata and Fugue, while I think she transcribed it for the harp as well as anyone could, I think some pieces just don't nearly sound as well on other instruments except the original and this piece is one of them. The thing about organ music is that it's not just the notes that make it up but the various stops that are used as well that could never be translated to another instrument no matter how well the notes are transcribed. I just didn't think her performance of it on the harp was anywhere near as well as it is on the organ. Just my opinion though!
