I was pretty surprised that the main character in Never Have I Ever is a harpist! It's not very often that I see a main character play the harp, so I thought I'd give my opinion about her performance.

Beautiful harp. It looks like a Lyon & Healy style 17 gold.
Agree, 17 or similar (based on it being a semi-grand, the carvings, and lack of gilding on the column), and probably an older one (because of the lack of that textured / stippled pattern on the top of the column). For sure not a 23. I had thought maybe a 21 or 19 (and maybe brass?), but Lyon and Healy also says it's a 17 on their post about the show.
Fact: maitreyi actually got the harp shipped from the set to her home in Canada.

Hi. Can you share with me where you found this sheet music? I would like to give this a try. Probably waaaaay too difficult for me, but nothing ventured nothing gained. More shows with a harp. Poldark. Elizabeth plays in several episodes in the first season. The Good Witch's Gift. A Hallmark movie. In the wedding it looks like the harpist is playing Canon in D on a Clark harp. Also my harp teacher Erica Powell played on Glee, season 4 episodes 9 and 13 and on Real Housewives of Orange County. Season 8, episode 23.

Wasnt that an old Erard harp? I saw one quite a while ago on a facebook groop "Used and preowned harps". Might be one of those. ☺
It might be! I wasn’t entirely sure what model it was but you might be correct haha
As far as I know, Erard has not built harps with extended soundboards,. I think it is an old Lyon & Healy, perhaps a Wurlitzer, but the column looks more L&H

Ok super late but I finally just started watching this show. Is it NORMAL for a high school student to own a friggen L&H GOLD concert pedal harp??!? Isn't that a harp for rich ass professionals? Anyway I'm only on the 4th episode so I haven't seen her actually play yet, but every time I see that gold harp it just totally takes me out of the show. I just got a super plain used pedal harp and it still feels extravagant. Meh.
HAHA it’s definitely not normal! I do kind of wish she had a “plainer” harp because I think it would’ve been more realistic, but then what would I be ogling in this show??
So, for sure a brand new gold concert grand will cost more than an equivalent model in natural. With an older semi-grand harp like this (just based on the videos, guessing 1910s-50s?), gold isn't going to make as much of a difference to the value as a new one, and the value will really depend on the condition.
Harp is an expensive instrument to play in so many ways, no matter how you cut it. While I imagine an upwardly mobile middle class immigrant family _might_ be more likely to go for a Chicago / 85E / 85CG or similar, for ease of maintenance etc., it's entirely possible that an older gold harp could have cost less to buy (esp 3-4 years ago when the show filmed) depending on the condition of the action, soundboard, base frame, neck, etc. At that time, again, depending on condition, probably could have gotten this for less than the price of the harps mentioned above new. A fairly new student can probably get away with a harp that has a little clicking in the action or a little neck twist.
So, I agree that something else might be a little more realistic, but it's not out of the realm of possibility either. Our kid, who's 9, moved up to an older gold semi-grand (from a 40 string petite pedal harp) recently.
Also, a lot of harp students rent.
@@wyardley yeah as the show has gone on I've gotten a better look at the harp and it does look like an older SG vintage model, not a crazy brand new gold 23 or something. Now the most unrealistic thing in the show is that the harp never has the goddamn dust cover on it. I was having a lowkey meltdown during a crowded party scene in the house with the uncovered harp sitting there in the corner. 🤯
