- Classic episode from Top Gear.
Clarkson sees if an Audi A8 with a V8 diesel engine can run from London to Edinburgh and back on one tank of diesel fuel. He does this to see if Audi's claims about the fuel economy of their large, powerful executive sedan holds up.

I've forgotten what it feels like to look at the counter and see more litres than pounds
One of the few good things at the start of lockdown last year. Fuel prices fell through the floor.
@@SamFr1000 thats the middle East flooding the market with oil to p*ss of the American government. On our company fuel card account we got as low as 88.9p per litre but you don't get to see that on the counter at the pump

Miss the era of cheap petrol, massive engines and stupidly good cars.
Why do miss the era of good cars? Good cars still exist and old cars are objectively garbage

@@abovethelaw4417 Lmao that's the stupidest thing I've ever read
"Objectively" might wanna think twice about that
The "fuel is denser when its cold" is accurate but the tanks are stored far below the ground and the temperature down there almost never changes especially not from morning to mid day.
Dont baffle with science and common sense
"tanks are stored far below the ground" what?
@@prateekpanwar646 the tanks at the petrol station are underground
Jeremy tried to apply the 1984 F1 logic, but unfortunately petrol stations don't work that way
Also if anything the fuel tank would have shrunk in the cold weather
This is one of the contests for what I liked to watch Top Gear - not just crazy rides in super cars, but something more toned down.
@Jason Yep, I feel it the same way.
something feels so surreal about watching Jezza be full of emotion.
He is much much younger here.
It wasn’t so fake and forced in these earlier series
I collected my 2016 Audi A8 4.2 V8 tdi from a dealership in London and drove it back to Newcastle @280 mile and averaged 56mpg. Can be a little heavy in town though.
Yeah but thats the difference with modern cars. Modern Automatic gearboxes are made to make your car more economical. The automatic gearbox in the A8 from this vid isn’t made for economical purposes. And your A8 has 2 gears more if i’m not wrong
That’s terrific mileage, my nephew said he 60 mpg once and I didn’t believe him, I do now
@@Shane-zx4ps the 2016 A8 does 1.200 rpm at 60 mph if im not wrong.. so yeah its incredibly economical for such large and heavy car
Got the 4.2TDI in a 2012 VW Touareg. Cruising 60mph down the highway got me 42mpg. incredible for a 6000lbs car

Tesla today: the model s will do 390 miles!
Audi in mid 2000s: 800 miles, 1 tank. 'Recharge' in 2 mins.
That audi was the result of 100 years of development. In another 5 years time electric cars will be doing 1000 miles to a charge and only take a few minutes to top up.

Right before this, in the TG studio, Clarkson says the following:
"My name, is Jack Bauer. And this is the most economical 24 hours of my life!"
The format of this film, with its split screen and the clock counting down the miles, is a clear spoof of "24."
And I wanted to like the comment, then I saw the number of likes is 24. Hence I commented... 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Audi are truly great cars. I ran A6 Avant for 8 years. Best car. With careful driving it was capable of 800 to 900 miles on a full tank. Marvellous.
What car cannot do that with a large enough tank in relation to its consumption?
@@miljororforsprakpartiet290 Loll, 800 to 900 miles covered on a single tank of fuel is pretty good going indeed.
Well, this is RUclips. My m5 comp gets to the moon and back on a single tank.
Didn't that shit have the 2.5 TDI diabetic engine?
@@fungo6631 Loll. My A6 had 2.0TDI, about 825 miles approx on a full tank of diesel when cruising steady on UK motorway. The top gear episode used an Audi A8, with 4.0TDI engine. London to Edinburgh and back on one tank of diesel.
I used to drive my 2006 3 litre diesel quattro A8 from beyond Geneva to home in N Yorkshire in a day via Calais-Dover, almost 900 miles. Still had enough in the tank to get to work and back the next day. Put it in sport mode however and you could really annoy hot hatches by keeping up with them on the twisty stuff in a limo.
😎
Cheers for uploading this, very much enjoyed watching this when it was on the telly.
This is the most British comment I've seen
This was the first slice of top gear i watched many years ago. The rest was history
Just drove from Leeds to London on Saturday. As I was not fully awakened in the morning, I turned the cruise control on and average 51.0mpg. 59.6mpg on my way back in the evening with the cruise control off! I knew cruise control is less economical as it brakes more often but was surprised at the difference.
This was the first TPG episode that got me started on top gear
Jeremy at his peak. Good times.
Fuel is sold by volume, but the energy content depends on the mass.
Cold fuel has more mass per volume, so more energy per money :).
I, too, watched the video.
It's 7am and the roads are quiet 🤫...well 20 or so years later that's no longer the case!
That parody of 24 nearly killed me
2:56
His genius is frightening.
That's quite a challenge: driving a tank from Edinburgh to London round-trip on one tank of petrol. Maybe the 1st Christy suspension light tank, perhaps, but that's asking a lot from a tank...
The music from, When eagles dare , is so brillant.
Clarkson plus this A8 is an undefeatable Anglo-German alliance
Loved my Passat TDI prefix, about 47-50 mpg hwy, awesome on road trips.
Love the Where Eagles Dare tune in backround
You mean The Crimson Permanent Assurance tune
If it's Top Gear it should be Where Eejits Dare.
@FoulPrinceRomero it’s that good I would as well
0:00 Music from Apollo 13. Track "Situation Critical." Would be fitting for when about to run out of fuel.
3:59 - Ahhh, Gaelic Storm, nice choice :)
Well done for 1K!
Love that "Crimson permanent assurance" theme in the background :D
Revisiting this for some pointers
Audi employees were probably cheering like mad watching this.

On thing to note right from the beginning is that he is driving in very cold weather which compared to normal temperatures can reduce cruising mpg by up to 20%. This is due to the increased density of the colder air.
That's not the case. Once a vehicle is up to temperature cold air is beneficial. It is more dense, so less fuel is needed. Hence why turbo cars perform better in cooler temperatures.
@@dahorn100011 More fuel is needed as you need to burn the correct amount of air to the correct amount of fuel. This ratio is 14.7:1 for petrol engines. Turbo charged engines increase the density of air for this reason as it is force induced by the turbine then cooled by the intercooler to enter the combustion chamber much denser. It still has to burn with more fuel to keep the air:fuel ratio of 14.7:1 but gives more power.
The place he visited in Edinburgh is called Calton Hill if anyone was wondering
I got from Edinburgh to Brooklands Museum Weybridge and back on just over 3/4 of a tank driving a 2005 VW Passat 2.0 TDi with 200,000 miles on it.
Pretty sure this was the same episode in which Ronnie O'Sullivan "raced" against the Stig. Great episode 💗
Clarkson and osullivan are such a nice combo
*FUEL TANK CAM* #Underrated
This perhaps one of the Top 10 epic things done in old Top Gear.
During the 2000s I would average 35 mpg on bmw 328i (was a poor Uni student) now on the same journey i do about 22 mpg. I remember driving behind trucks on the highway to decrease wind resistance, the car would be doing 40-45 mpg. Never brake was my moto. Was driving a 30k petrol bmw trying to save fuel. Your parents buy the car, you pay for fuel.
Poor in 2000s with an 328i?😅What car do u drive now lol
Once, I left my bank card at home, and did 50 miles with 25 miles in the tank by sitting 1m behind a lorry at 55 the whole way home. Did something silly like 65mpg. But the concentration was so hard!

Absolutely, always told, every time you brake, has same effect as draining a small amount of fuel from your tank.
I had a8 3.0 quattro....was doing 145mph and engine done big bang and that was end of the fun bit
My 2002 A4 Avant 1.9 TDI = 62.8 mpg on the dot. Plus sunroof titled (increasing drag) n going much faster ... £50 diesel from London to Paris and back with fuel left over!!! Absolutely astonishing ... (Oh it's done 500,000 miles) Heard the ultra models even better, how, HOW THEY DO IT GUV??? 🦂
I remember watching this episode when it first came out and thinking how amazing that Audi look. I thought it was so futuristic. Now it looks old lol
Clarkson dropping a body out of the boot cracks me up.
Using air con and stuff when on the motorway is negligible as the engine is cruising nicely.
You'd notice the drop in mpg more when using all that in town.
It doesn't work like that. AC has fixed power it needs to work, just like a fridge.
78.9p per litre. When I was visiting my sister in 2008 the fuel was around 1 pound per litre. And it was 80 miles from London to the south east. It was pleasant to watch litres going the same with amount :) In Poland it was around 3,5 to 4 pln per litre and it was very cruel for the wallet. Right now it's around 7 pln/litre for diesel, and 6,7pln/litre for petrol and it's still cruel for wallet. I've made 2200 pln last month, which is around minimal pay and you can do the math yourself.
It's 3.5 KM per litre in Bosnia, and the minimum pay is 600KM. It's dystopian man.
That's death metal, Jezza.
It's Napalm Death so technically it's grind

Looking back at this gives me a weird feeling inside, i must’ve been 12-13 watching this on TV, little did i know that i was watching the gold era standard of content.
Looking back now that i’m a grown man in my late 20’s and it makes me happy and sad at the same time to know that younger generations will not know what it was like to watch TV shows without the constant political messages pumped into your brain.
What an era this was.
Jeremy and the gang made constant political gags. What are you talking about. Political humor is from all times from the left and the right
@@MrJimheeren i think you’re misunderstanding but it’s my fault for not being clear, what i mean is back then there was none of the “woke” culture injected into the series, political jokes yes but none of the woke stuff which nowadays is everywhere.
@@mr.shin.5138 So you liked the political messages that were pumped into your brain in the early 2000s better than those of today. Is is that what you mean?
@@andreasu.3546 No, the political messages you speak of were jokes said by Jeremy, Richard and James and i treat at that. Jokes because that’s what modern day politics is.
@@mr.shin.5138 I understand exactly what you mean. Subliminal messages interwoven into just about everything. This is how "COVID" operates. It's all about psychological manipulation. Brainwashing. Thankfully a small percentage of us are immune to such tactics. I'm one such individual. It was obvious right from the start in late 2019 that the whole thing was a huge socio-political scam. I've outright declined the 'vaccines' and have not once worn a mask.
I wish the 4.2TT Diesel was availably in the US. Love the 2003-06 4.2 BFM
Sadly this Audi A8 lasted only a year before it went for scrap.
Because people don't know how to keep proper maintenance. I have a 2004 A8 since 2017 and still going strong I only had a problem with the underseat ecu that controls immobilizer, replaced it, programmed it and car never had issue again and I'm using in a 90° weather
That's what happens when you don't know what servicing is.
Around 7.4 l per 100 km for a V8 Diesel in a Audi A8 from that time is really good fuel economy for this type of car.
I like the fuel gun.
That audi does be look verry cool!

3:15 I just noticed this is a reference to 24!
miss this era of Top Gear
In Australia during the 2020 lockdown I saw 89.9 cents a litre and less than a dollar a litre in lots of places. That is about 45 pence a litre, if that. People with fuel efficient cars lost out on that round 😄
Yeah it was the same in Europe. Less than 1 euro in some places
I loved this challenge.. however he is wrong in the heater.. using the standard heater (no aircon/clima) doesnt impact fuel economy as it just uses heat from the cooling system.. no extra drain at all
My 1.9TDI ASV Octavia 2002 did 78MPG from Falkirk to GLA Airport. 55MPH AVG
I was doing 60MPG to london with that car...
19.8 gallons in the tank... or as we say in Germany: 75 liters. Btw: You can fill a cube with 10x10x10 centimeters to get 1 liter. Or as they say: 6.1 inches x 3.4 inches x half of a quarter horseshoe.
I love this car, it's the car that Jason Statham filmed from the transporter movie, well I don't think the same engine but in the end .. great car, with consumption under 7 liters, a v8 ... good consumption on the open road, without brakes always ... I don't know if you notice, but old cars are always much better and much more attractive in design than the new ones that come, am I right? to live to be loved
People always seem to say that whichever generation isn't in production is more attractive. This car is somehow even more bland than the current A8.
I'd say it's got a good overall design, it doesn't stand out, but it's very whole and I'd say harmonious.
Jasons car had a w12
I thought Jason StathAM was in the transporter movie not Jason StathON
@@pramay5116 I am not sure what you expect from an A8. It's a classy, fast and serious car. It isn't supposed to have a huge spoiler or whatever else to make it "interesting"
In my opinion has the accelerate before the hill thing wrong. Diesel engines get the most out of fuel when under full power. Doing only a little work is not very efficient. So going up a hill is more economical if one substracts potential energy. Accelerating before the hill mostly adds air drag.
Try using an empty two liet plastic milk carton, it wider top is ideal for male relief purposes unless you are a very big boy when then appendigies may get stuck.
I drove the same gen a8 with a 3.0 tdi and god damn is it a great car! Very very VERY small fuel consumption for such a massive car
78.9 p/l!

Surprising even though I had the 4.2L I literally only had to fill up two times in my trip from new York to Florida these cars get really good gas mileage
2:15 it's not thrash metal, it's Meshuggah (as far as I can gear), a genre in itself ;)
Car throttle tried to do this in a skoda. They succeed but by god I bet they wish they had this Audi instead of a 430k mile skoda!

78.9 a litre. how have we allowed fuel to increase by so much. Its all just taxation on the fuel. Oil was around $25 a barrel. It is only $64 a barrel as posting this.
Brits approach to refuelling is about putting 20 quid once in a while.
Contrary to what he says it is possible to make the journey. he quoted the combined MPG, which as he started will not make the journey. However as we know the journey he made was not a combination of driving urban, non urban ect but indeed a very long journey driving at the optimum speed for MPG Therefore the car was able to make the journey.
well, i drive a 2009 truck that does about 11 mpg so with the air on and windows down i get about… 5.45 mpg
So he fills up when it's cold to get a tiny amount of extra fuel, but then they put a camera in the fuel tank which takes up volume. Smart
I hope Clarkson likes Diesel engines now
Removing dpf and silencer increases mpg
I get flashed when I do 50 on the motorway. In lane 1 of course
which episode is this
