XPT overnight express train service depart at 8:30pm from Sydney Central Station to Melbourne Southern Cross Station. The train usually arrives at Melbourne 7:30am. Its a long 11 hrs trip stopping at various counrty stations to set-down and pick-up more passengers. So its start and stop trips. Best to get up to walk around so you wont get sore ass! The buffer car selling hot meals , snacks, nibbles, coffee/tea, drinks, etc. Dnot get the food there esp the hot meas at $9.00! Its expensive and the quantity is not much. I get a better filling hot meal on AirAsia X to Malaysia for $5! Bring your own sandwiches/foods and get the coffee/tea for $3.00.

Have you watched people like Simply Railways or Dylan's Travel Reports?
We went sleeper on this train once, on our way back some idiot parked his car on the rails and we had to catch a V-Line Coach the rest of the way
Memality that would of been shit
Good train and enjoyable to ride, that is our country scenery makes up for the long hours of Sydney to Melbourne/Brisbane. However, the night services should have more sleeper cars at lower prices. Never buy an economy seat if you are travelling overnight on this train for more than 6 hours. Go at least First Class. Because trying to sleep in economy is just awful, very difficult to sleep unless you are a young child and can stretch out in the window and aisle seats. Nevertheless, I love this train and I am really excited about my next trip on it.
Anyone remember the Southern Aurora leaving Sydney 8pm. Non Stop to Melbourne followed by The Spirit of Progress at 8.10pm stooping at all stations
I certainly do. Being a shunter in Sydney Yard / Terminal, I enjoyed the shunting movements of both AM & PM trains. Detaching & attaching the motor car carrier(s) and also to allow the engines (Sydney end) to be placed in the Middle roads of 1 & 2. I enjoyed watching the departure of both these trains leaving Sydney Terminal. This also includes the Inter-Capital Daylight express as well.
Great video! I think the XPT and Xplorer fleet are long overdue for a revamp.
Yes, definitely! The old XPT trains look tired and old. The toilet is small for a fat person in there. No water from tap to wash your hands! Disgusting! Austalian trains and stations are lagging behind those in Asia! China is speeding ahead with new high speed trains.
Nice Sydney station. Miss Sydney.
How was your sleep
Did the train have sleeper class ? (not sure of exact name)
In the Platinum class I think so.
Transport vlogs - First Class
I’ve been in sleeper class, it’s nice but it’s still a far cry from what other countries have to offer
I still can’t believe in this day and age that Victoria still runs loco hauled trains on their regular timetables.
Well this is good Ole Australia! We still dont have high speed trains and a real subway here like those in Euro and Asia!. Its aging old rail network running like snail mail!
Transport vlogs Also, the XPTs can’t be replaced soon enough. They’re tired old things, they’ve all had several engine replacements and the interiors of the cars are very basic and extremely dated. They were only supposed to have roughly a 12 year lifespan, yet here we are in 2018…
Yes sell them as scrap metal. You know how the govern does things here in slow pace. A high speed train is the answer but there is not electricity to run the train. If those socialist idiot govern start to build nuclear power stations , then there is hope of a HSR.
One cant run the HSR on wind mill and solar power, they are unreliable and expensive/
V/Lines Poor Mans XPT (The Push/Pull P Classes & H Sets) have been retired (The P Classes) late last year...
@@15sixmedia XPT is a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) and the engines are `power cars' not `locomotives' although similar I admit.
The configuration is excellent for keeping the engine noise away from the passengers and the original French high speed trains TGV and Eurostar are the same (power cars at each end) and they have an in service speed of 186 MPH (one major difference are the `shared bogies' between the carriages - also a feature of the original BR APT-P btw although later dropped)
With 15 intermediate stations on the route from Sydney to Melbourne this route (roughly 545 miles) is not going to be fast and to attempt high speed would be energy intensive and on the night train pointless.
As far as I know the engine model has only been changed once, originally Paxman Valenta, then upgraded to Paxman VP185. Admittedly another upgrade to MTU Diesel engines with better fuel economy and less emissions would be the next logical step.
My perception of the interior is one of quality and being well made, although the blue colour scheme could do with a change to grey / green perhaps.
The creaking / groining noises could be solved by greasing up the suspension presumably especially the `rubbing boards' between the cars although some of the noise must come from the poor track to be fair.
As to life span with planned maintenance there's plenty more life in these units; in the UK our IC125 recently celebrated it's 40th birthday and has only just been retired from the route from London to the West due to part of the route being electrified for Crossrail. The retired units have not been scrapped but are being used elsewhere in the UK having been modified with plug doors and I believe modern toilets (IC125 toilets still discharge effluent on to the tracks which XPT never did).
This train used to be called the Southern Aurora and the day light version was the Inter-Capital Daylight Express.
Pre XPT days.
This train was originally three independent trains The Southern Aurora was all Commonwealth Railways Stainless steel cars and the Spirit of Progress was all steel with Blue and Yellow livery, they departed Sydney within an hour of each other around the 8 pm mark nightly, the Inter-Capital Express was the daylight runner leaving Sydney in the early morning arriving in Melbourne late afternoon / evening.
I worked all three as a Sydney Guard in the late 80's.
shenysys Not quite. The Aurora was an all sleeper with proper dining and separate lounge car. It was non stop.
At least they were sandwiches? I took the high-speed train in China and it tastes worse than a TV dinner (and it looks exactly like one) 🙊🙊.
Yes the XPT serves good sandwiches on board. but the hot meal is expensive and very small serve! All foods are pricey in the XPT, bring your own sandwiches next time and get the coffee @ $3.00.
Thanks for the advice. Will do when I get to ride the XPT.
is there any stops along the way to melbourne? or is it direct to melbourne without stop
Yes many stops along the way. Its 11 hrsstiing on your bum! LOL Its a slow slow train service! what a joke!
Intermediate stations 0:14
I’ve traveled this train many times to all 3 cities, night service is certainly not great if you’re in economy. One thing seriously lacking is no wifi and phone reception is virtually non existent until you reach a town. The XPT fleet needs a serious overhaul and brought into the modern day. They’re quick enough and smooth enough, but very outdated.
is there less people going at night then during day train?
I never taken the day trip so dont know. But the night trip seems always full/
I think may be. Some prefer to go at night and arrive in the morn.
There are stops along the way, about six or seven.
Is there in-seat power?
No, the train is not like aircraft seat. its an old train really, not even an overhead screen! The electric train (ETS) system in Malaysia is much much better than this XPT train here. You can watch the ETS train service in my channel also.
note the returned XPT on the other platform

never in economy again.
Haha! There is no soap and water in the toilet! Disgusting! So you want to travel in first class?
First isn’t any better. It’s exactly the same as economy, just with slightly more leg room. Certainly not worth the extra you pay.
Then you are stuck! haha!
Nice video; what a shame that it's spoilt by the uploaders virtually 100% negative comments about the XPT. Of course it's slow compared to a modern electric train, so what?
Are the people willing to pay extra taxes to flatten out the route and electrify it and buy new trains?
The constant negativity reminds me of people who moan about old PCs as if the slowness is a reflection on themselves.
If you really like trains then a slower journey can be more enjoyable than a fast one so you can better enjoy the scenery, especially if you're a tourist (and at night you can still see out of the window with moonlight since the lights are turned off). Presumably on the night train you're supposed to sleep / doze for the majority of the night anyway.
Is the speed the ONLY issue? No, the steadiness, the internal nose, the toilet, the seat, the smell on diesel, the food, everything.
Enjoying the scenery? You must be joking. As a regular rider from Mel to Alb, there is no scenes at all.
The good ole Centrelink express, third world rail travel at its worst.
You mean country-link express? Yes, is a disgrace in this 21st century compare to those brand new electric trains, new subways, high speed trains, etc in Asia countries now.! Australia is like a third world country! You see the govern sign-up to the Climate Change scams! so they have to up the electric prices and everything going up! Billion of dollars are spent on those useless wing farm and solar panel which cannot even power a factory! Billions sent to the UN and the Climate Change hoax organisations! Asia, India, South West Asia are speeding ahead with high speed trains mega projects! . We have none here just talk, talk, and more talk! ! Its too bloody expensive to build anything here! We have those numb skull idiots running the govern here!
If its a Centrelink Express, many unemployed will be on the train to Melb! LOL
Transport vlogs well the Centrelink express is TRUE. The mental health team in Albury and Wodonga have dedicated fund to pay for tickets of people to continue their journey to Melbourne and Sydney.
@@transportvlogs2841 what is a "wing farm " ?
is there any stops along the way to melbourne? or is it direct to melbourne without stop
Yes, its stops at many country stations along the way, thats why it takes 11 hrs service to Melb! So its not an express service really! We need a high speed train soon but its a long long way off!
Oh thank you for the reply. Is it better to go on night train or day train? i assume night train has less people because nobody likes traveling at night.
It depends on whether you want to arrive in Melb in the morn or at night.
I guess if you can't enjoy the journey with so many intermediate stops 0:14 the night train is better for you, you get a very comfortable bed with cotton sheets etc. I understand (but you may have to share the cabin with a stranger unless you pay extra).
I'm so nosey that I would enjoy the day time journey looking at the scenery, if you tire of looking out of the window you can always take a book.
