I think Molesworth Station North of Hamner Springs is NZ's biggest Station but it is now run by DOC Mount Nicholas Station on Lake Wakatipu I know is pretty large and inland Canterbury has some large Stations.
Hi, Molesworth was/is 120th the area of NZ. Even though the DOC has a presence there (a DOC volunteer stays in a small house close to the original building to manage the visitors) from what I heard it is still a working station. I rode through there on the Sound to Sound track in February. Beautiful area.
Cold and late ... brrr! The morning light ... and shadows upon the hills ... stunning. Your sense of humour is a delight and a strength. Onward and upward!!! Fantastic.
The sound was probably red deer bellowing, it's quite a primordial sound but very impressive. We have loads in the Netherlands and in a private nature reserve they're so used to people you can watch them up close. The males are fighting over the emails and asserting their dominance.

@@timgearing5121 tah for info, I've never heard of 'sound to sound' sounds interesting!!
These country stations are amazing. Wouldn't have thought to include them in a section hike but will now.
