After a lot of franchise and limited-overs cricket, it is time for the best format of the game, Test cricket, to take center stage. In the first Test of the two-match series, Pakistan will lock horns with Bangladesh at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi on Wednesday (August 21).
Pakistan have announced their playing XI for this Test match, and they have opted for an all-pace attack.
Captained by Shan Masood, the hosts will be aiming to strengthen their position in the World Test Championship standings. Currently, Pakistan are in seventh place on the nine-team table, having played five matches, won two, and lost three.
Surprisingly, under new head coach Jason Gillespie, the hosts will go without a front-line spinner in their XI.
Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Khurram Shahzad, and Mohammad Ali are the bowlers selected for the first Test of the series. Salman Ali Agha, the all-rounder, will handle the spin duties for the hosts.
Pakistan lost their last Test series against Australia in Australia 0-3. They were outplayed in all departments of the game and would be keen to make a strong comeback.
On the other hand, Bangladesh, led by Najmul Hossain Shanto, are in eighth place on the points table, with just one win from four matches so far in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle.
For this tour of Pakistan, Bangladesh have relied on experience, including seasoned players like Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mominul Haque, all of whom have been named in the squad.
Taskin Ahmed will not feature in the opening Test, according to chairman of selectors Gazi Ashraf Hossain.
He is expected to join the team for the second Test. In Taskin's absence, the pace department will be led by Shoriful Islam and Hasan Mahmud.
Mahmudul Hasan Joy has also been ruled out of the first Test due to an injury. He is also expected to be available for the second Test.
Shakib and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, renowned all-rounders, will play a crucial role with both their spin bowling and middle-order batting.
