- Using materials hosted online, this video shows the moments since 1952 when the Winter Olympic cauldron was lit using the flame lit at Olympia in homage to the 23rd Winter Olympics that start in Korea tomorrow
I just realized: The Nagano 1998 Olympic Cauldron was designed to look like a kadomatsu, a type of Japanese new year decoration
Sochi's was epic, but Turin's was just PHENOMENAL
Salt Lake City is the most emotional
It is, Turin was the best lighting of the flame into the cauldon.
@@jtlovescodelyoko SLC's also got the prettiest cauldron. And fun fact: The final male torchbearer at Sochi 2014 was actually a member of the very USSR hockey team that lost the Miracle on Ice game to the US team captained by Mike Eruzione in 1980!
It's hard to pick a favorite caldron lighting of the Winter Olympics, but there were some that were absolute standouts for me. They were:
Sarajevo 1984.... WOW, that was 40 years ago. The city is a much different place now ( formally Yugoslavia now Bosnia and Herzegovina today )
Calgary 1988
Lillehammer 1994....30 years ago... that ski jumper's entrance was part of the reason.
Nagano 1998
Salt Lake City 2002.. it's amazing that they pulled it off six months after 9 / 11 / 2001, and the 1980 Lake Placid US Hockey Team lit the torch
Turin / Torino 2006...one word: STYLE, Italians are well known for it. Can't wait to see what they can do 1 1/2 years from now in Milan / Cortina d' Ampezzo 2026
Sochi 2014..10 years ago... before Russia's doping hump was broken...but a unique lighting regardless
And Pyoungchang 2018, celebrating the 30th ( now 36th ) anniversary of the Seoul 1988 Summer Olympics with theirs, now 6 years out.
The least favorites: Beijing 2022, 2008 still was the best. Innsbruck part 2, 1976. Can you say fire hazard?! Nearly cooked the stadium with the double cauldrons. And Albertville 1992...low profile... I'm sure Paris in two weeks time won't be anything but LOW PROFILE, especially with the Seine River as a backdrop for the Opening Ceremonies. And that's that, hope you enjoy it...a little bit long LONG, but I did it 😊!
Despite the malfunction, the Vancouver 2010 cauldron looked amazing
Fun fact: The man who lit the cauldron at Sochi 2014, Vadislav Tretiak, was the former goalkeeper of the very Soviet ice hockey team that lost to Mike Eriuzione's 'Miracle on Ice' team who lit the Salt Lake City 2002 cauldron!
When the Soviets had to settle for the Bronze and have to hear the Star Spangled Banner at the medal ceremony. 🇺🇸
There is a video of the Lake Placid lighting, but you don't have it.
Definitely a stepping up of "Go Big Or Go Home" since Nagano.....
Thanks for sharing the videos from the past Winter Olympics of each moments since the 1952 through the 2014 Winter Olympics of the lighting of the Olympic flame into the cauldron. The best Winter Olympics moments of the flame was lighted to the cauldron in the past was Turin 2006, in my opinion.
They were all fantastic, but I think Turin was the most dramatic.
yeah faking it with fireworks was truly spectacular /sarcasm. There was ZERO connection between the torch and the cauldron.
A lot of people are saying that, but I agree with all of you all.
@@ZakhadWOW That's the matter of semantics I guess- you could say the same for a few other Olympic/Paralympic cauldron lightings.
2022: Let's not talk about that one.
This is the worst, not even the flame light into the cauldron, the two was given the honor just put the torch into the spot. Hope that Milan/Cortina 2026 will be different maybe the same as 2006 twenty years after Torino the same country.
Turin 2006 was the best once of all time!
Maybe of winter games, but of summer games it has to be the Barcelona archer lighting the cauldron. You get one shot at it. Literally.
It is, I would say that it is the best one when the final torchbearer Stefania Belmondo the lit the flame when she lit it on in the middle of the stadium then the flame bust across the stadium and up into the cauldron, it is the second best behind the Barcelona Summer Olympics in 1992.
The stairs for the Grenoble 68 Cauldron look dangerous, especially with that final shot where the torch bearer is descending the stairs.
The Salt Lake City cauldron has recently been relocated and completely refurbished (due to the expansion of the Univ of Utah stadium) It still looks just as amazing/phenomenal as it did in 2002. And now anyone can visit the SW corner of the stadium to look at it.
Looking forward to the 2022 Winter Olympics/24th Olympic Winter Games in Beijing in China and the 2026 Winter Olympics/25th Olympic Winter Games in Milan and Cortina in Italy.
The 2030 Winter Olympics/26th Olympic Winter Games will be determined in the next IOC session.
and we here in Utah are chomping at the bit for another chance. We have incredibly good memories of it, especially since it came right after 9/11 The city center was an armed camp, but we made the most of it.
The Beijing winter Olympic torch is a GIANT dud
@@ZakhadWOW You guys' opening ceremony was an incredible one, and your cauldron is my personal favorite! And one interesting note: Of the 2 final torchbearers of Sochi 2014, the man was in fact the goaltender of the very Soviet ice hockey team that lost to Mike Eruzione's legendary team!
I hope that they picked Stockholm/Are, Sweden to host the 2030 Winter Olympics because they tried so desperately to host it since Sweden is traditionally a Winter Olympics powerhouse, but they never get the chance of giving the honor to host it, and they fell short in 2026 when they lost it to Milan/Cortina to make up the disappointment. Stockholm/Are for 2030.
Sochi, the Olympics that broke Russia's doping back!
Sarajevo 1984 ♥♥♥♥
なんで1972は観客席からの映像しかないんだ?
The feels on Grenoble as he walks down the cauldron hit different. The view was spectacular.
Turin was spectacular, but you cant deny gathering the entire 1980 Miracle team was the most special
And we here in Salt Lake are strongly hoping to get another chance in 2030 (every single venue is still in operation for active training and competition). THe stadium has even been expanded. I got to watch the dress rehearsal for that ceremony, but obviously the didnt use the hockey team for it LOL
It is, Turin was the best lighting of the flame of all the Winter Olympics on this video, second was 2018 when Yuna was given the honor, third I would say Sochi 2014. The 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid was the highlight with the Miracle on Ice winning it.
@@ZakhadWOW You folks at SLC have one the best cauldron designs ever. You could even reuse it along with the rest of the stadium just like LA did!
They dressed differently in the early 2000s and mid 2000s decades compared to now?
Where did you find that Sarajevo abc recording?
2002 blew my mind.
Well I was in lake placid and at the olympic museum, there is a video of the 1980 opening ceremony. It included the lighting of the cauldron
Closest I could find of the videos off the top of my head. I know I've seen it somewhere.

Update this for PyeongChang.
This was uploaded prior to the Pyeongchang Games and therefore is an accurate record up to that moment in time. Pyeongchang will be added to the list prior to the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Games.
magical sarajevo 1984
I feel sorry for the 4th Vancouver torch bearer who was left with nothing to light.
Technical difficulties, 4th torch never came up
Right. Luckily the other three worked
They lit the fourth arm at the start of the closing ceremony
The 2010 Vancouver Olympics was not the best, with one of the cauldrons got stuck and the person who supposed to light the flame couldn't light it and she had the honor of doing it in the closing ceremony, the cauldron that they design was terrible.
@@fpjrzman They did it to make up the disappointment that one of the final torchbearers was given the honor to do it at the closing ceremony, so terrible that this is not the best to light the flame to open the Vancouver Olympics.
summer olympics please
Midori Ito in Nagano 1998 is my favourite
The flame in Oslo was lit by Princess Astrid .
Sochi 2014 ❤❤❤❤
The Lake Placid cauldron sits in a field with little to no attention. The school's running track is there. Very shocking to see
