  • How is expensive is a heart attack while scuba diving?
May 13, 2021, was the day before Lyell's 50th birthday. He was on the first dive of the first day of an 8 day liveaboard trip to a place he has always wanted to visit, and is on many divers' bucket list, the Socorro Islands! On that fateful day Lyell experienced a heart attack while diving and was evacuated by emergency life flight back to the mainland of Mexico. In this episode Lyell talks about what he has learned about what caused his heart attack, and discusses the expenses involved and the minefield that divers may have to walk through to learn how to handle these situations safely without financial ruin.

Glad it worked out in the end for you. In the UK, there are no charges for healthcare, unless you choose to go private for certain procedures - private healthcare is normally just routine procedures or aftercare, and to my knowledge, does not cover any emergency medicine. Health Insurance isn't much of a thing here in the UK as it is in the US for obvious reasons, and is primarily bought by people who travel abroad as it is often a requirement to enter foreign countries. That being said, you can still get it - to cover private healthcare costs, or to pay out when ill or to cover costs arising out of illness.

Thank you for going through all of that. I'm more afraid of the financial mess than the actual medical problem. That's screwed up. On a more positive note: when can we get more AP Inspiration videos?

Glad you made this episode. Been following you for a few years now. I am actually pretty surprised that your insurance covered so much. Mayne worth mentioning that we as divers should not typically expect those result. Which is why DAN is still soo important

Agreed. DAN is amazing but it was also interesting to me that there are certain requirements that need to be met to get full coverage. Thanks again John.

@@everythingscuba so if I heard you rightwe need to make every effort for our attending dr. To get in touch with Dan on the event of an emergency?

    • @everythingscuba

@@johnmontgomery2735 not your attending doctor. But if you are a DAN member. You need to make sure the crew is talking directly with the DAN physician group.

Glad you're ok, I watched your one week out video, you looked rough. Seems like you've made an excellent recovery. Pretty scary to be out in the middle of nowhere in a foreign country and have a heart attack. I'm 53, never had an issue but it's always in the back of your mind. I've been a DAN member for 15 years and try to never let it lapse. I feel safer knowing I have them behind me when I go on these types of adventures. My son was injured last summer and had to be flown from Visalia CA to Chicago. Small jet with two pilots, some nurses etc.. it was 575k one way. His room at Shirley Ryan hospital was 25k a day. Medical care is so expensive.

Oh man I’ve been waiting for the rest of this story. Shocking the hoops you have to jump through. I miss single payer healthcare from Canada but I am now glad I have UnitedHealthcare through work. End of the day $8-9 k isn’t a bad loss all things considered. Also fear of lapse is why ALL my DAN insurance - dive, travel, and professional - is set for auto renewal on my credit card. Looking forward to new videos

That sounds like a really stressful time for you!
My insurance is with DAN Europe. They would pay for all treatment and any repatriation outside of the UK (up to the max on my policy). Then once back in the UK, I would just use the NHS as normal once I'm repatriated.

This is ridiculous but I want to know, can you smoke while scuba diving? Can you purchase a device or mechanism that allows you to smoke cigarettes under water?

Lyell is still alive and well. He has gone through several large “life events” (non health related), over the past year and this has slowed our capacity to produce videos. But a dive trip is happening in three weeks and we still have lots of video content to bring you soon. Our apologies on so few videos lately!
