SELLING ART IN A GALLERY IS AMAZING BUT HOW DO YOU GET ART GALLERY REPRESENTATION?

  • Art business tips - Selling art in an Art Gallery is amazing but have you ever wondered how artists go about getting noticed by art galleries. If you want to sell art in a gallery you know that it can be challenging to get an Art Gallery Representation. I'm an abstract artist and through the years I have been fortunate enough to gain gallery representation with many galleries. I wanted to make this video to share how I was able to get my abstract art in galleries so that you have an understanding of the process.
    When I first started my art career as an abstract painter, I really had no idea how to go about getting a gallery to notice me. It didn't occur to me that I could go online and make a gallery submission of my original art paintings. Or maybe subconsciously it did, but I was too nervous to apply. Hear what I have learned over the years.
    I also want to explain the difference between the two types of art galleries so that you don't find yourself in a situation of paying high prices to show your work in hopes of getting noticed.
    You can see the list of galleries that I work with listed below.
    KOYMAN GALLERY - Ottawa, Ontario
    PWD GALLERY - Guelph, Ontario
    2GALLERY - Prince Edward County, Ontario
    BENZ GALLERY - London, Ontario
    RYAN FINE ART GALLERY, Port Carling
    DETERKUNSTEN GALLERY, Tisvildeleje, Denmark
    PI FINE ART - Toronto Gallery
    BLUE CROW GALLERY - Toronto Gallery
    CANVAS GALLERY - Toronto Gallery

      Why are you anxious in your own home filming yourself? That's weird, since there's literally nobody there. Social anxiety is only triggered by other people's presence. Film yourself just for your own pleasure. Post those! You don't even have to talk, just show how you paint.

Its also great to go to shows and see lots of mature artists. Many are established of course, but there were also lots who were only a year or two into their journey. "It's never too late to become what you might have been." I love that quote!

    I like the way you explained the whole gallery/art show thing!! Although it’s hard to part with commission $, if your work isn’t “seen” by potential buyers, you’re not going to sell much. I think at the beginning of our art careers we tend to be a bit attached to our work on a personal level. I know that I still like to know my buyers, but it IS a business. I imagine that once you’ve got a big enough body of work, you’ll get that out of your system! Love your tips and insight-thank you!!

    • @lorimirabelliabstractartist
      @lorimirabelliabstractartist  3 года назад +4

      Yep at the end of the day it is a business. Doing art shows are gruelling, so much hard work to load and set up the work not to mention 12 hours on your feet for sometimes 3-4 days straight. Then talking to hundreds of people each day and then tear down and unload. LOL all with no help. Art in a gallery is paint the work and drop it off and collect the money once it sells. LOL The 50% commission is more times than not, worth it.

    Hi Lori, I love your videos, so helpful and honest, and I love how you just seem to want the best for us other artists! I quit my job a year ago and have been working flat out ever since to try to make art a viable career. My next step it's to go and visit some galleries and see if I can get representation. Wish me luck! X

    • @lorimirabelliabstractartist
      @lorimirabelliabstractartist  Год назад +1

      Thanks Jane. It always make me nervous when I hear people quitting their jobs to pursue their art career without having gallery representation first. Maybe that cause my parents instilled fear in me of how hard it would be to make a living as an artist. They were right ,it's a tough gig. There's nothing wrong with still having a job and working your art career on the side until you can't manage anymore because your art career has taken off. To me then that's the time to quit your job. I wish you much luck and success❤️

    Thanks so much....again, Lori. 🙏 One thing you said on one of your previous videos was how important it is to have a “body of work.” So I’ve been saying to myself over and over “body of work, body of work, body of work, and I’ve been busy creating, painting, a lot , (I’m drawn to abstract but I like traditional & contemporary too...lots of floral and nature and portraits,) getting supplies to paint more, getting into a groove, still finding my way, but I’m beginning to feel more confident that I can one day do well in selling my art. I have a website that I have just let “wither on the vine,” so that’s where I’m gonna start and put my art there and also rename the site in my name. In the meantime, I’m getting ready to submit my digital work to a site that I use for vector graphics myself. They invite “contributors” so why not. I look at the stuff that’s there and think “I can do that.” There’s some technical things I have to work out, but they can assist with that ( like format, size and resolution.) This is a good way for me to begin to get some discipline about just submitting my work to a business and there’s not a lot of risk. If they don’t take it, they’ll surely tell me why and I can give them what they need or move on. If they do take it, I may get some pocket change when someone uses my designs. I will also be checking out some local easy shows and fairs that might be a good entry point for me to get my feet wet in shows & sales. Thanks again. You may never know how much the wisdom you pass on may really help someone in their art journey, but you can be assured, it will.👍🎨😄🙏

    Thank you for this info. I've been wavering about re-applying to a popular event in Mass...mixed feelings about what it means to do an art fair, (I've never done one). This reminds me about the important things: showing the work, connecting with other artists, exposure to gallery owners...I have resisted the idea of 'sellable' art like the punk that I am. However, as time goes by and I begin to sell some things, I have to admit - to sell work to someone (not a family/friend) is, regardless of how idealistic I tend to be, an affirmation. I don't want to just make my work in a closet of me. I want it to be enjoyed in the world. (and I want to be able to support the habit).

    Would love to see a video topic on how you juggle family and being able to create 12 hours a day? I'm an artist, as well, and find it very difficult juggling a full time job, family, and creating my art to be able to turn that into my full time job.Thank you for your posts. They make a difference.

      Hi Melissa, I am my family lol it's just me. I don't create 12 hours a day I would be burnt out creatively speaking. There is so much more that goes into running a business than just creating the artwork. When I had a daytime career I work an insane amount of hours trying to juggle both but I only have me to look after so that made it very easy.
      I new early on in my life that I'm selfish with my time and so children weren't an option for me.

      @@lorimirabelliabstractartist I see. I apologize, I thought you mentioned in one of your videos you created 12 hours a day ( I was so jealous). I appreciate your response, and definitely can see when it's only you to worry about, it would be a little easier regarding time. My husband and I don't have any children either, but I still have him, and my parents who are older etc... I wonder if you could share in a future video what your day looks like from when you get up etc....sort of your daily routine...
      Thank you again for everything you bring in your videos. Love your work. Love your content. Take care.

      Elderly parents and a husband is still a lot to manage. Maybe one day I'll share a day in the life lol but every day can be a bit different from the last day. This morning was answering question that came in from last night. Created two labels to ship out paintings, then instagram work. Moved on to working on the youtube video I uploaded this morning. Then lunch time and answering questions and comments from RUclips plus Instagram post. And now I'm finally about to get my day started with paintings...🥰

    Just throwing out there that you might have a local art house or artist coalition who *do* offer classes/workshops on art business topics. It probably varies from location to location but if you're not looking you're not going to find it. Here in the Kansas City Metro we have the KCAC (Kansas City Artists Coalition) who have been offering workshops online for members. It's a valuable tool!

    Love your art and your videos Lori. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. So very helpful when thinking about my goals and working with galleries. Here’s a question for your next Q & A video: Since you sell your artwork through galleries and your own website, does your pricing stay the same on both? Or do you not post a painting on your website that is currently hanging in one of your galleries? And how many galleries do you currently have that represent your work? How much work does each gallery expect you to give them each year? Thank you for responding to these questions. I’ve never heard any artist talk about this.

    • @lorimirabelliabstractartist
      @lorimirabelliabstractartist  3 года назад +1

      All my galleries are listed in each of the video descriptions. I talked in the video about pricing, that they should be consistent with the prices you have in the galleries. And how many pieces each gallery wants depends on the gallery. As to how many each year depends on how they are selling...the more they sell the more often you need to supply them.

    Thank you for all of your wisdom.. I've recently been working on drilling down my color palate to have a cohesive look & this was helpful. I'm not sure of pricing & I struggle with will people like it or the ones who are very vocal who don't.
