@@Glock2201 here’s my case in point. After waiting months to be notified by Buds about cheap white box Winchester 9mm 115gr FMJ I finally got the notice they have 112 boxes for sale at $44.99. .90ppu but to me that’s just as good as a $1 a bullet!!!!! That box was .9.95 or less on sale before 2020 the year of the plandemic
Choosing a powder? Here are a few things I figured out. Look at your reloading manual and see what powders fill up the case preferably at least 75%, but absolutely more than 50% to prevent loading a double charge from happening and start making your list with those. Adjust the list according to the next factors and move to the top of the list the ones you consider most important. Does the powder burn cleanly? Does the powder have a reputation for accuracy? Does the powder give the velocity you're attempting to attain? How many rounds can you load with 1 lb of powder? Does the powder meter well through the powder measuring device you intend to use? How expensive is the powder is per pound? Now, see what's available and see how high it is or if it is even on your list. If the only powder available is at the bottom of your list, at least there is a powder available. I also made sure to purchase a bunch of Trail Boss so that whenever I'm introducing a new shooter, I can load up some powder puff rounds so as not to scare them off. I also save all the primers I remove becauseif primers never become available again, we will have to rebuild them if we want to continue to reload.
Smart. I also look to see what powders have a range of min to max at 1 grain. I've had issues with scales and prefer not to have a .5 grain spread for safety.
If you see some Longshot in the shelf, which is a shot shell powder, grab some. It works great for most handgun loadings. Same with Blue Dot and Clays.
JK - Longshot and BD are two competing powders for magnum type shotshell loading - tailored for pass shooting on ducks, more distance than for shooting Handicap Trap. However,, the burn makes it great for +p and +P+ handgun use for 38 Spl, 347 Magnum up to 44 Magnum and 45 Colt. The reason LS and BD were not on the must have list is their a bit more limited in versatility. Clays will handle the powders on the standard loading end so that with the powders you mention - the range of caliber handling is overlapped so that you can load everything except the real screamer loadings fori 460 and 500 S&W. Your powders are certainly good and useful... Thanks for commenting, Steve
@@hawkeyetedI used some in 10mm. I originally used the data from the Hodgdon site and found it very snappy for target stuff. I then used data from a manual and came out much better.
Yeah Longshot is one of my favorite for.38 Special +P and moderate magnum in.357. Top velocities. Blue Dot causes difficult case extraction in my revolvers, just as soon use 296! Clays is one of the most consistent powders in my.45ACP, very accurate loads. CFE Pistol is another great pistol powder as well
Been reloading for 45 years and always found that Unique was a dirty powder and old timers said it was "like shooting "dirt"! They were right! The stabilizers are actually dirt. Never knew that. Great information sir.
Thanks for educating the public F.C. Your a treasure to us all with all that reloading knowledge that's stored inside your brain. Fortunately, I loaded up on all my needs for reloading before the crapademic. Got everything I need for hunting for years to come.. maybe even decades if I ration my reloading supplies out. Thanks again for your reloading knowledge.
454Casull - Hello to you, sir...and I'm very glad you did stock up when the supplies were good. May others have that opportunity again... Best to ya, Steve
I came across H335 on the Hodgton site a month ago. They only had it in 8 lbs.... So I got some. They also had some tight group..... I got 4 lbs. I feel lucky to have found that.
10 years ago, I got my first rifle and I was paying a dollar a around for .223 so I immediately got into reloading and talked to my grandpa and he got me set up. I've reloaded everything ever since and rarely ever have bought factory ammo. Normal prices are still too expensive! Crazy that we only had 3 or so years of abundant availability and its all gone yet again. I even watched your videos way back then!
WCGwkf - Times of plenty for food supplies as well. But if the electric grid goes out anywhere in the USA, all food supplies will be gone in 3 days. --Kinda makes one shudder a bit... Best to ya, Steve
I've been reloading for a really long time , but I don't know everything yet. I learn something from your videos every time. I shot Red and Blue Dot when I was reloading shot shells. I don't reload those any more , but the power is used in handgun reloading. Waiting for the rifle powder video.
JH - The rifle powder video is already up in the 3 Circles over on Patreon. I just might go ahead and bring it over here since viewers like you have requested it... Best to ya, Steve

echo - 700x is a favorite powder of NRA Bullseye shooters tailored for 38 Spl and 45 ACP. Also useful in 9mm and all the standard calibers. And that price is also good and definitely not FUBAR. You scored nicely there...Steve
Echo, I agree that 700x and RedDot are some great propellents. They are very fast burning which is something I never got used to; I find myself loading with “medium fast” pistol propellants like CFE-Pistol ,HS-6, and Universal. Sounds like I’m a “Hodgdon Fan Boy!”
I'm glad you're on camera more!!! Your Smile, Enthusiasm, and HEART come out so full!!! The Y/T Algorhthim took you out of sight for a while... trying to catch up!!!
Thanks, I've been reloading 38 years and this is good info. I got away from Red Dot over a jammed shotgun the first or second year and went to Unique. Always keep Unique around.
Thanks for the info on Promo. Was not aware it was the same as Red Dot without the red flakes. I love Red Dot! I wish the Part 2 Rifle vid was posted on YT. Good reloadin to ya! 😃
Got into handloading back in '92 when I bought my first high maintenance, $$$ per round, magnum cartridge rifle, a .340 Wby. Since then, whenever I buy a rifle or handgun, I also buy a set of dies, if I don't already have a set for that particular caliber/cartridge. Since you're talking about budgeting and priorities, I have always stockpiled components with my more readily disposable cash. Some people buy lotto tickets, liquor, cigarettes, and other tobacco products. I choose to feed my reloading habit. Thus, I've consistently maintained an ample supply of my desired powder, primers, bullets, and cases for the guns I own and their various cartridges I handload...to each his/her own. Learned the importance of that from the very beginning; back when primers were less than $2 bucks per hundred, powder was less than $15 a pound, (Saw IMR-4350, a favorite of mine in the most versatile rifle powder category, advertised for $56 a pound yesterday) and both were ubiquitously available. Good luck finding most of this stuff today, in the specific products you're looking for, at any price. To those just starting the journey, just remember, it's never too late, and it's probably only going to get worse. 🙁
Thank you. I'm new to reloading and so far only loading 9mm. I've tried HP 38 and CFE Pistol. Im finding the HP38 easy to measure and like it but trying to learn more options. This is very helpful!!
Joe - And I love all of you who are brothers in wood, steel, polymer, lead and nitrocellulose. I just spent two days making and editing more videos...Best to ya, bro... Steve
Your intro reminded me of Mr Rogers sitting on that couch won’t you load with me please won’t you load with me flashback glad your still finding ways to make videos during these ruff times
I use 2400 for magnums and 800X is great for hot magnum loads!, AA#2 or 231 for most autoloader .380 through.40 target. WAP was perfect for hotter autoloader and Silhouette is equivalent. I bought a surplus powder from Jeff Bartlett called 102 which I used for years for competition loads in my .40. He said it was AA#2 equivalent. Unique is so dirty!!!!
Wow, I've been reloading for 50 years and you imparted knowledge that was new and informative. Thanks a bunch. In ham radio we call someone we choose as out teacher an Elmer. I wish you were my Elmer when I started reloading.
Good video Sir, I have to agree the Winchester 231 is a great powder if you cannot find Winchester 231 look for Hodgdon HP-38 it is a duplicate powder under the Hodgdon Brand I have had excellent results with Winchester 231 / Hodgdon HP-38 I load anything from 32 ACP up to 45 ACP very clean and very little smoke.
First. :P Accurate 2230 would be on my list for rifle. Unique for pistol. I think there's better options for me, but if I could only do with 2 powders, those would be my choices.
Jeff Cooper's .45 ACP load used a huge amount of Unique powder behind a Hensley & Gibbs Number 68 453-200-SWC mould; (now a days I use the Lee Precision 452-200-SWC mould) the load was probably not the safest and pressures ran into the high + P range. Hodgdon's 2019 Basic manual (available online) lists a load with that projectile at 1013 fps using Longshot powder that is non+P 16,900 CUP (SAAMI Lists Standard .45 ACP pressures to 21,000 CUP and +P pressures to 23,000 CUP!) These are mainstays for my ammo reloading, not to mention that I use Longshot powder for slug and buckshot loads, it is the one powder that I cannot do without! Sadly it has been hard to find!
Never too old to learn and I did from this video. Unique has been a go to powder for close to 50 years, Bullseye also. I would include a magnum powder like 296 or H110 if you load magnums at all. Always great videos, thanks for posting them.
RapidRrobert- Some components like Berry Bullets have done the sprout availability. I was able to score some 9mm and 44 cal Berry Bullets from Midway, but right after I ordered them, they became out of stock... If you see something you might need, gotta pounce... Best to ya, Steve
30-06, 45 acp, 308, and ALL the mausers are all Mauser 'A' cases,#1 head size.. Bullseye, Unique and 231 are 'paper powders' IF you can find any, great for shooting paper... back to those Mauser A cases, 4064 or Reloder 7 will get you 'factory loads' in any of them. I still use these... its amazing how I've got away from 'experimenting' and now just load the same 'old' loads that I started out with nearly 50 years ago.. LOL
Your knowledge about powders is impressive. Composition, Burn rates, cartridge usage, comparable powders. Just watched the rifle powder video. I thought l was pretty knowledgable about powder. Learned a lot from these two videos. Thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge.
I feel Unique powder is one of the absolute best handgun powders ever. It's a little big for flakes but for versatility it's the best. I've used it for everything handgun related. Lately ive been using Cfe pistol, power pistol, and clays. Longshot is a great 40s&w and 10mm powder.
Great video Steve! You really do know how to simplify your explanation of the strengths and advantages of these versital powders! Can’t wait for part two.
i got an 8lb of clays right as the pandemic started and everything sold out. loaded a ton of 38spl wad cutters and got a 9mm die set to reload 38 short colts. just got this tiny hand lever 12g shot shell reloading kit, so i can reload shot shells in the field. super clever and compact design. its gonna be a while before i can reload my magnums i still gotta get powder, projectiles, and primers. but i got a bunch of 357 mag rounds so i don't have to worry for a long time.
I've been reloading for years, and I think you did a fantastic job explaining powder types. Thank you, I enjoyed it. Keep the videos coming on RUclips please.
Sparky2020 - Thanks to your comments and the likes and subscriptions, RUclips is allowing us to continue. Hopefully, that won't change. Best to ya, Steve
I shoot 9mm Berry's bullets, 115 gr and 124 gr. I've been loading 4.0 gr of Titegroup under a 115 gr bullet and 3.9 gr under a 124 gr. bullet I have a 550C Dillon progressive press, with Dillon's case activated powder measure - it throws powder really well. I just came across CFE Pistol in my new 51st Ed'n Lyman manual - a new powder to me. Ordered some today and am awaiting its arrival.
Great content. I am greatful for your willingness to share your knowledge. I love to reload but am not that good at it. I wanted to get a 45 auto rim but it is out of my budget. So I live my dreams watching you live yours. God bless you!
The "Secondary Market" means "Hoarders selling powder out of their garages." I suppose there might be a significant profit incentive there, but be careful. The BATFairies will be watching closely.
@@G19Jeeper The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms was created as part of the Treasury Department and its function was to insure that the Federal excise taxes on those commodities were properly paid. Since then it was transferred to the Justice Department and is now a kind-of FBI that is involved with those specific kinds of investigations (now also including Explosives.) Since selling reloading powder and/or primers, which are VERY gun-related things, without an appropriate license is undoubtedly a crime in all of the "57 States," I'm sure they would salivate at the thought of making an arrest!
@@arthurdevain754 I know who they are as do most people so the first 2/3 of your comment is useless. Likewise, taxes aren’t applicable on private sales at least not yet. That’s an argument for another day but You do realize that selling reloading components isn’t federally regulated like a firearm is? So nobody gives a shit if you sell a few lbs of powder out of your garage. Only issue you would have is Postal Inspectors showing up at your door if you try to ship either since both are Class 1.4 explosives. You sound like an idiot trying to tell everyone that the ATF gives a fuck about someone selling some powder.
@@G19Jeeper Selling a pound or two won't cause the BATFairies a problem, but "engaging in the business" probably would. Go ahead and try it yourself and let us all know how it works out for you!
357 magnum, I use Unique, Bullseye, 4227, Lil Gun. I have a SS revolver with a 4 inch barrel, and a single shot break action 357 magnum Rifle with a 20 inch barrel. According to the Loading Manual the max load can be used however some are not accurate as I would like, so I start at the top load and back down until I get the best accurate shot. 3 shots all touching.
I just picked up some Titegroup, 1st time using this powder. Did some 9, 38sp, and 45acp. Very pleased with the results. I’m going to do some 40SW this afternoon
I have been using Unique, Universal, and Bullseye for years but have more recently started using Titegroup in 38 special, 357 magnum, 9mm, and even 44magnum light target loads and yes titegroup has proven to be a very good performing and nice using powder.
You should be pleased with it because Titegroup is a great powder, LS, you have a very useful powder there. Only reason it's not on the list of must haves is because Titegroup pressure spikes big time past the published maximums (most powders have a bit of safety, but not Titegroup) so it's not a good powder for maximum loadings - any additional pressure issues will magnify with Titegroup - in the 40 cal, Titegroup has caused most of the Glock Kabooms reported. But as long as maximum charges are not being used, Titegroup is a fantastic powder, and I also have a pound of that. I traded another shooter a pound of Unique for it a couple of years ago. Good reloadin' to ya, Steve
For pistols I use Unique (45 ACP, 38/357) For rifles mostly IMR 3031 and IMR 4350 (load WWII Military calibers) As for dies got the standard stuff (and a few unique) Rifle, 30 Carbine, 308, 30-06, 8mm, 7.7 Jap, 6.5 Jap, 7.35 Carcano, 303 Brit, 7.62 x 39, and 7.62 x 54 R Pistol is shorter 380 auto, 38/357, 45 ACP, 45 Long Colt, and 9mm. Trick is to grab dies for every caliber you have, also bullet molds and for rifles a few Gas check cutters (can cut checks out of pop cans using a lee single stage press) for a few different diameters. Last get a selection of sizing dies also you can use on a Lee single stage.
Mr. Tickles and yourself always keep me thinking. I'm obviously newer to reloading but thanks to good reading and what I assume is mostly luck I've made great ammo so far. Nothing like hitting a target with a rifle you've never shot before, in a chambering you've never shot before, with ammo you've never made before. What a hoot
Speaking of Accurate 5744, it is a great powder for smokeless muzzleloader. Been shooting 44gr of 5744 behind a 300gr XTP for years in my Savage 10ml2 50 cal.
Lately I see mostly Vihtavuori, Norma and some Hodgdon and Accurate come in stock. Learning which of the less known or popular powders will work for you could come in handy. For example, my first foray into reloading was shotshell during the 2016 powder drought, and Vectan was by far the most widely available power, and was very affordable, but load data was scarce. Also "equivalents" and rebranded powders. I'm running low on Shooters World Clean Shot, but was able to score some AA No2. Pre-Western buyout AA No2 was the same powder (Lovex D032). (AA rebranded several other Lovex powders at the time). The formulas has probably changed since the buyout, but should be quite comparable, and easy to rework the loads. Quite a few powders are rebranded imports. Now we just need someone to start importing primers!
I got some Norma 202 and 203B this past week as well. Very versatile powders that sit right in that useful midrange with 4064, 4895, Reloader 15, Varget and BLC2. I was also able find some Vihtavuori N320 which works great in 9mm, .38 Special, .44 Special, .45 ACP, and .45 Colt. It sits between Hodgdon International and Win 231 in burn speed.
@@JJW3 I was curious about those, but the price got me (similar to Vihtavuori), and I was more in need of pistol powder. I did manage to score a 5# jug of Shooters World Clean Shot, so now I've got the pistol powder I needed.
LM - indeed, There were three of us back in the day shooting up Promo by the jugs...and there was a time when the Gunsite academy swore by Promo. Best to ya, Steve
Well, I didn't know that, either! Do know Red Dot burns relatively close to Bullseye..almost identical. Except Red Dot is larger flaked, like Unique, Reloders, etc..like HP38 same as Winch.231, I hear..
I've long held that W231 is to pistol cartridges what BL-C(2) is to rifle cartridges: It may not be the absolutely best choice for an individual cartridge but it's so darned good for so many different calibres.
TRP - The first time I ever saw any BL-C2 was when I went to my friend Doug's house way back in 1970 - He had a big 15 pound keg of BL-C2 in the hallway leading to his bedroom...Best to ya, Steve
Great video! Thank you much for sharing! Where I live (old Europe) I stashed in Vectan AS , A1 and Tubal 7000, I can load shotshells and 9 Para to .300wm... I'm happy with them!
I bought a bunch of tote group about a year ago because that’s all I could get and I’ve been. Liking it so far. Took awhile to work my load in but I managed a good accurate round
When I got back from Gernany in 1974 I started reloading for my S&W Mod 29 that I bought through the Post Rod and Gun club...I knew nothing about reloading and relied in the advice of a guy in a gun store near my house...he recommended Unique..which I used to reloading both. 44 Mag and Spl...
I have 2 preferred handgun powders. The first is Bullseye, a fast burning powder that is great for loading wadcutters and still good for standard loads. The second is Vihtavuori 3N37 which is a slow burning single base power which burns very clean and is great for high power loads.
Good basic info. I was expecting you to mention a magnum powder like 296/110 to round things out, but that is ok. Love the loading block. I need to watch that video.
Great material as always FC-45LC. My first powder for my newly purchased Glock 3rd gen' G21 (45 ACP) was Bullseye, and a short time later Bluedot, and Winchester 231. I haven't reloaded in about 4.5 years, and have all the materials to get in the air again when I choose to sit down and make an effort at things in a weekend. I went through my bottles of Bullseye, and Bluedot, and found them to be an interesting comparison - with one being a fast, and the other a slow-burning powder; this being when I started into my reloading endeavors exactly 10-years ago. The first drought of supplies some six (?) or however many years ago left me/us with negligible options in powders on the shelf, and when things started to trickle in again, I got a bottle of Titewad, and then Universal. When things started to come around again over the last few years, I have now stocked a bottle of - CFE Pistol, No. 7, Power Pistol, Unique. 'Have yet to put the Power Pistol, Unique, and I think No. 7 to use, but... ...when I commit to a weekend of production. :)
Matt S - Well done on buying those powders when supply was available. You can ride out the shortages until supplies return. Good reloadin' and good shootin' to ya, Steve
5744 is very useful for reduced loads in rifles. Pressures are low enough that I can use magnum pistol primers in single shot and bolt action rifles. Bottle neck cases typically run 1700-2200 fps and accuracy is amazing! Recoil and blast is reduced and the barrels heat up slower. I use cast bullet load data.
@John Beige From the Lyman cast bullet guide, 55 grain bullet, 11.0 gr gives 1765 fps at only 18,000 psi. Max is 14.5, 2234 fps only 26,600 pressure. I use any small pistol magnum primer, they work great and conserves my limited supply of rifle primers. I use jacketed bullets only.
Good morning Steve and, and thank you for sharing another great and informative video. Your videos are always a joy to watch, I learn each and every time you upload a new video. This episode, like so many others, is packed with comprehensive information that the new, as well as the old timers like me can use. Thanks again and, I hope and Pray you and your family are well and safe. Keep your powder dry. Stan
@@FortuneCookie45LC I always look forward to your videos, they're always a joy to watch and, like I said above, I'm always learning something from you. As an example, I'm always on the lookout for Unique for my .44 Specials and, I'm eager to try out the Unique for some .41 Special loads that Brian Pierce tried out. Skeeter Skelton used to use, IIRC, 7.5 gr's of Unique for his 240 gr cast SWC's. My problem, I can't find any Unique but, you mentioned Hodgkins Universal powder. I've never used that but now, I have another option thanks to you. Thanks again. Stan
I purchased 1# "Samples" of many handgun powders to just play with. They all work when the load is tuned to a load for your handgun. Some have only a few grains between min & max. Odly, the low end seems to work really well for punching paper accurately. When you go to 8# jugs you save a lot of $$$. This is assuming the Reloading Hypothesis that you actually save $$$ is true. In reality we ALL shoot only bulls eyes with our handloads... So we shoot leads out of boredom. 😂😆 Lee Precision has a bottle adapter that lets you put a 1# bottle directly on your press. So empty bottles are really handy even if you buy in jugs. I find the standard Lee hopper perfect for handgun load sessions. The 1# Bottle is rifle size cases. I really like the Lee Precision manual as it gives you the Volume of the charge & the Volume of a case. Low volume powders can really fill a revolver case with double & triple charges. Some do not like them because they are hard to see to verify. But they do save more $$$. We are going to have supplies again soon. With Evidence Based Medical lawsuits winning every time in every state our society is opening up. People will want to spend $$$ on other forms of recreational activities. So buy today based on (4) years in the future. Then you just cruise thru Plandemic Shortages.
Good advice there from the nar reaches of Cincinnati...!! Hello to you Carlos, and thanks for the wisdom of your comments...makes all the sense in the world. Steve
Thank you for your time and sharing of your experience. I almost feel like there are too many powders for the manufacturers to produce. I am new to reloading. I only buy the 1 lb cans until i find which powders my guns like.
I feel for the new reloader!, so many new "speciality powders on the market the "old school" powders still work guys!!! I use unique in several pistols calibers and it also works in shotguns!! dont be afraid to go "old school"
If you could have only one powder then it would have to be UNIQUE. All pistol and cast bullets for rifles. I have used bullseye, unique and 2400 for 40 years. When powder reappeared 4 years ago I added herco, red ,blue and green dot to my inventory. Back to unique it is dirty but you have to clean the gun anyway. Safe shooting. And please buy multiple reloading manuals.
Imr 4064 BLc2 and varget work for 223,30-30, 308,and 3006 among others. Unique works for almost any handgun round. Be careful!!! Some people in the comments have poor advice and obviously don't have a reloading manual. I'm talking from the powder or bullet manufacturer, not an internet forum. 😒
I’m still new to reloading. Got into it just before the pandemic crap. Got lucky and stumbled across 3 boxes of SPP a year ago. Now I just have to wait another year or two to find more lol.
I use a pinch of bullseye powder. For my grouse load in my 350 rem mag. With a 38 wad cutter. Not for long shots but when you see a grouse in a tree or hide in a bush. Super quiet just a little pop.
I have all but the Promo powder in my cabinet. I have had the bullseye for 10 years now. I don't use it much but when I need to lay down smoke I use the bullseye. I do like it but I shoot WIN 231 and CFE Pistol for most of my non magnum rounds. I like Unique and IMR 4227 for my cast rifle bullets. Happy Safe Shooting 🇺🇸💪
Bbtt - Ha,ha that's outrageous..., har lol. I can see it now...the Yamato is coming through the San Bernardino Straits along with other capital ships - and the baby flattops are about to take a pasting. Just beyond lies all the exposed ships, supplies and men in Leyte Gulf. The rest of the fleet is off to the North chasing decoys. It's a desperate time. The destroyer squadron leader doesn't wait...orders all the American tin cans to charge into torpedo attack formation... "get ready to dump all the available Bullseye powder into the funnels men...left full rudder..!! SMOKE SCREEN..!! SURFACE ATTACK TORPEDO...!!" ...and history was made... Best to ya, Steve
red dot, red dot, red dot(or promo). not always the best, but its always useful. Its bulky so its easier to see your charge, and its been around forever so theres lots of loads in the manuals. i use it in 32 sw, 380, 9mm, 38spc, 45acp and lc, and for reduced loads(1600fps roughly) in 30-30, 308, 7.62x54 and 30-06. Its not position sensitive, and it goes from low to high charges with predictable behavior.
I have never seen H110 listed in any manual for anything but magnum rounds like 357,and 44. It works in 30 carbine. This powder will not ignite properly in reduced loads, and if you fill non magnum pistol cases with this and succeed in ignition you will be drastically over pressure. I could be wrong, but after doing this for 40 years I doubt it.
As a Canadian target shooter , just got into reloading and really enjoy it, for now only loading 9mm , 38spl and 357 mag , I’ve been using HP-38 and unique, both seem to work well , so far here in Canada bullets and primers have been fairly accessible, thanks for the great information as I’m always looking for more . Cheers from your northern neighbour 👍✌️🇨🇦
Great video. Really like the loading block. I made some out of an old maple board I had. No where fancy as yours. I did not put a base or feet on them but they work well. I have used Universal and Unique for a lot of rounds. I have been using mostly Unique because my LGS always had the 8 lb jugs of it and I had data for 380, 9mm, 40 S+W, 10mm, 38 sp, and 357 mag.
Glovck2201 - Thanks for your comments, as for the loading block - I'm trying to make them presentable for gift giving...for our our use, we definitely don't need the frills...Good reloadin' to ya, Steve
@Mr. Cool i do, about twice a year for the semi’s. Any more is unnecessary if the ammo burns clean. Dirty ammo is also usually very smoky and has a lot of flash. If I’m loading defensive ammo, all are not preferable
Yes I have a reloading budget. Whatever is left at the end of the month goes to groceries, mortgage shoes for the kids...
Food and Shoes ? You’re a good Soul.
Inflation is eating us alive, the value of our $ is going south every year, and 2020 just exacerbated it.
Howl! Lol! That's great!

Longshot is superb in 10mm.

Try Hodgdon Universal. It's really close to Unique and burns clean.
@@eddieb1766 Am gonna try some myself..if/when I can be able to score some again!!

I just wanted to comment that I have watched you for years and never said anything.
I just wanted to say THANKS for all your help
I came across H335 on the Hodgton site a month ago. They only had it in 8 lbs.... So I got some. They also had some tight group..... I got 4 lbs. I feel lucky to have found that.
Isn't H335 a rifle powder?
@@Glock2201 It is.... Tight group is pistol. My point was be persistent and check sites daily. You never know when it will pop up.
@@Glock2201 h335 is great for .223
10 years ago, I got my first rifle and I was paying a dollar a around for .223 so I immediately got into reloading and talked to my grandpa and he got me set up.
CFE Pistol has taken Unique's place as my go to all around handgun powder.
I've been reloading for a really long time , but I don't know everything yet. I learn something from your videos every time. I shot Red and Blue Dot when I was reloading shot shells. I don't reload those any more , but the power is used in handgun reloading. Waiting for the rifle powder video.

About 2 weeks ago I picked up a 8 lb jug of 700x for $204.99 I couldn't pass it up. My favorite pistol powder right now is red dot.
echo - 700x is a favorite powder of NRA Bullseye shooters tailored for 38 Spl and 45 ACP. Also useful in 9mm and all the standard calibers. And that price is also good and definitely not FUBAR. You scored nicely there...Steve
Mine too!!
Mr FC, you are REALLY smart! Thanks for taking the time to make these for pistol and rifle. I took notes.

Great vid. From what I've read, Winchester 244 "Winclean" is now the clean burning version of 231.
Thanks, I've been reloading 38 years and this is good info. I got away from Red Dot over a jammed shotgun the first or second year and went to Unique. Always keep Unique around.

HP 38 is wonderful. Versatile for many pistol calibers. I have used it in 32long, 9mm, 40 cal, 38 special, 45acp,
All empty cans... Wive is bugging you to get rid of stuff... But I need my empty cans!!

First. :P
Accurate 2230 would be on my list for rifle. Unique for pistol.
I think there's better options for me, but if I could only do with 2 powders, those would be my choices.
PulverizerA - And you've got the 223 and 9mm front and center, with 308 also handled...You are good to go... Best to ya, Steve
Spot on sir. I hope we can find components soon, I am running low.

I shoot 9mm Berry's bullets, 115 gr and 124 gr. The secondary market will spike because of this video
The "Secondary Market" means "Hoarders selling powder out of their garages." I suppose there might be a significant profit incentive there, but be careful. The BATFairies will be watching closely.
@@arthurdevain754 why would the ATF be involved there?
Thanks Cookie, Ive learned a few things from you, especially the nitro content of certain brands.
Was hoping you’d be covering ‘tight group’ , I’ll check part two. I enjoy your coverage. Thanks
Good to know about the pressure spikes. I normally use vihtavuori powders, but it’s hard to find up here. I’m north of the 49th parallel 😀
I wish you wrote a book about shooting, You know toooo much. I would buy it immediately. Thank you Bob
"Re-evaluate your reloading technique."
Good advice.
For pistols I use Unique (45 ACP, 38/357) For rifles mostly IMR 3031 and IMR 4350 (load WWII Military calibers)
As for dies got the standard stuff (and a few unique)
Rifle, 30 Carbine, 308, 30-06, 8mm, 7.7 Jap, 6.5 Jap, 7.35 Carcano, 303 Brit, 7.62 x 39, and 7.62 x 54 R
Pistol is shorter 380 auto, 38/357, 45 ACP, 45 Long Colt, and 9mm.

What a hoot

Shooters World Clean Shot is my favorite powder for 9mm, .40 S&W, and .38 Special.
Speaking of Accurate 5744, it is a great powder for smokeless muzzleloader. Been shooting 44gr of 5744 behind a 300gr XTP for years in my Savage 10ml2 50 cal.
I use it for my 45-70
Lately I see mostly Vihtavuori, Norma and some Hodgdon and Accurate come in stock.

I've seen Promo recently. Didn't know it was Red Dot.😪
Red dot is good all the way up to 338 win mag. (Lyman cast bullet handbook) the old 1.
...just found 2 lbs of Unique at the beginning of thus month..Aug 22...haven't used it since the late 1970s when I loaded for .44 Mag/Spl...
The only powders I see on the shelves are IMR and Hodgedon. I really like Longshot for pistols. I buy 1 pound every pay day. Next I'm getting H110.
I use my powder measure only for the finer powders. Less mistakes that way. I am in no rush to reload, I take my time so I have no errors.
Dick Tickels. Has to be one tough dude.
Cookie, another great one. Ditamaceous Earth, is not dirt.
Thank you. I want to start reloading with the cost of ammo going up.
I have 2 preferred handgun powders. The first is Bullseye, a fast burning powder that is great for loading wadcutters and still good for standard loads. The second is Vihtavuori 3N37 which is a slow burning single base power which burns very clean and is great for high power loads.
Nice loading block I'm just reloading to be prepared just need powder and primers
Good basic info. I was expecting you to mention a magnum powder like 296/110 to round things out, but that is ok. Love the loading block. I need to watch that video.
Thank you for all that you do for us. Great informative overview.
I started with the slow and dirty HP-38 and now use Titegroup and HS-6 for 9mm, 45acp and 10mm.

Lee Precision has a bottle adapter that lets you put a 1# bottle directly on your press.
GOLLY GEE , Who's that OLDE GUY with Grey Hair ? You're still around ? Glad to see that , really ! Keep up the great instructional videos.

Another great video. Thank you for sharing your experiences with others. Some great information here. Thanks!
I love Promo, but I'm cheap. Now I want to try Universal, clean like Clays sounds great. Thanks for video
I use titegroup from 25-20 to 45 colt. Cleaner than bullseye (my old goto) and much less affected by case sensitivity
Unique and 2400 cover all my needs, 22 hornet to 44mag. Stay well my friend.

Dies are readily available on eBay at least common calibers. They are expensive but they are there. Now if I could only get small pistol primers.
Thank you! This was very informative and historical!
Alliant Power Pistol is a powder that can do pretty much anything. Can’t be beat in .45 ACP or .44 Special.
I’d sure love to find some primers. Geez
Try prime-all. It works for just fine for range ammo.
Thanks for your educational guidance and knowledge to all of us!
I use w231 for all my pistol loads from 32 acp to 45 Colt. Unique works well but i could never kind load data for a couple calibers i shoot.
red dot, red dot, red dot(or promo). not always the best, but its always useful.
If you have unique and h110 you can load just about to every handgun round.
@@greybone777 H110 is a hot powder - if in 44s or 357 HOLD on tight
As a Canadian target shooter , just got into reloading and really enjoy it, for now only loading 9mm , 38spl and 357 mag , I’ve been using HP-38 and unique, both seem to work well , so far here in Canada bullets and primers have been fairly accessible, thanks for the great information as I’m always looking for more . Cheers from your northern neighbour 👍✌️🇨🇦
Titegroup is a great handgun powder too. Takes a small charge for 9mm.
Glovck2201 - Thanks for your comments, as for the loading block - I'm trying to make them presentable for gift giving...for our our use, we definitely don't need the frills...Good reloadin' to ya, Steve
thank you sir for sharing all this information with us it is a jackpot of info
Les Sage - At Quark's on the Promenade, they yell Dabo..!! instead of Jackpot..!! Best to ya, Steve
@@FortuneCookie45LC well i will remember that sir thank you
I have found Unique and Bullesye both to be very dirty. 231 too. I have some W244 to try in 9mm. If Jerry Miculek swears by it, it must be good
@Mr. Cool i do, about twice a year for the semi’s. Any more is unnecessary if the ammo burns clean. Dirty ammo is also usually very smoky and has a lot of flash. If I’m loading defensive ammo, all are not preferable
