I got dropped in a 966M XE after running an older Komatsu 400. Took about an hour to learn to love the joystick, and just about everything else about the Cat. I don't want to see steering wheel in a loader ever again.
You did it right with the joystick Cat.
As a trainer I find that guys take a bit to adapt to how touchy the joystick can be compared to a wheel but after some practice they love it. While I am stubborn myself with a wheel, if I was sitting in a loader all day like the old days then I know I would've preferred joystick steering on how easier it is.

im operating a 972 G series II whit half whell ,,, and now company is looking after a 972 M :D :D :D whit stick... lets sea how much it cost me to adapt ... pick the machine whit 13k hours now it haves 28k :D some experience hm...in 7 years:D

Why is a joystick better than a wheel ?
And also, why not put a joystick in stead of 2 levers ? Now you have the same motion for up and down as for emptying the bucket, where with a joystick you have up and down and left right to empty. I would say it's harder to make a mistake, no ?
Trust me once you have moved to a joystick over a wheel you will never go back. Also for the boom and tilt functions i believe there is an option for that but I dont think many people use it. Im not sure but I dont think that type of stick would be able to take advantage of kickouts and float features.
@@jaherman216 kick out and float functions are still available on joystick hydraulic functions but I have used both and will take twin sticks any day over joystick. To the original comment if you have to ask why joystick steering you clearly have never run a loader for 12 hours a day.

Recently had two 963/973 track loaders, one with joystick, other with pedal control, again, the joystick machines were so much operator friendly, especially, as you say, after 12 hours !
@@malagablue7914 I've never had the joy of running track loader but wa480 wa500 980G and wa600. Cats airplane steering is a joke and the wa500 that are steering and stick the stick isnt as good as the newer ones that are stick only. There were days I ran loader 11.5 hours out of a 12 hour day. No thanks turning a steering wheel back and forth that many times.
