Huge thanks to Eric being so honest and straightforward for his audience and exposing such bad products !
🤝 so you don't have to 🙏
@@thecollegepicker yeah man I felt bad that you had to spend money on that printer 🤧
maybe not such a bad product but silly/greedy decision on the proprietary label nonsense
I saw something on hackaday I think. So cool they figured it out. Not super practical for a dummy end user to do tho 😞
As a long time Dymo user, I will discontinue buying any other DYMO label printers in the future. This is disgusting. I bought one and will return it immediately.
🤢🤮
I bought this dymo a few weeks ago. I ended up taking the rfid tag off the started roll and stuck it inside of the printer roll area and I was able to use a third party roll… BUT once it thought I had used up the whole roll it said empty and would not let me print any more!! So even the rfid tag is one time use. I ended up returning it and getting a rollo.
Yeah we are trying to figure out how to copy/program the RFID tags to trick the printer into thinking the roll is fresh. It'll happen eventually.
Time to just boycott ANYTHING Dymo all together. The only thing these egg heads will understand is drying up the money trail. This is the equivalent of a car maker locking you into ONLY being able to use their service centers and parts. I won't buy ANYTHING Dymo again. Screw them.
Thank you for this video! I am trying to fix my 450 Turbo and was tempted to buy the next printer. Now I won't have to buy expensive labels!
Wow!! The audacity of some companies trying to put people over their barrel.
Thanks Eric, this was REALLY enlightening because I just completed a warranty replacement of my 450 Turbo today with Dymo directly, and they offered me a 550 since they outmoded the 450 Turbo in November (2021); but I said no way, because of this fact you shared!
You are welcome.
You can open the bottom of the 5xl just enough to get access without disturbing any other connection leads and on the side just poking up a little bit is the rfid reader. You can slide it out carefully and follow the lead back to the board and gently remove the connector. After removing rfid reader put the bottom back in place and put in a generic roll and start printing. The only information you lose is how many labels are left after you turn it off and back on because the counter resets to a full roll
Oh. You can also use any generic width roll too
Thank you. I work for the county and I was trying to figure out why it wouldn't work anymore after running out of labels and replacing them. I didn't think I was doing anything wrong while getting the new labels in lol. But yes, I saw my new label maker is a 550 turbo and that my new labels do not say "Dymo" printed in the back LOL. You're the only source I found that explained why my damn thing doesn't work now. LOL So thank you.
After we used up the sample labels that were sent, I put a knock-off roll in the machine. As described in this video, it did not work. However, I noticed a weird silvery sticker on the outside of the empty roll of proprietary stickers. I carefully pulled that off and stick it on the inside of the roll of knock-off labels. It worked! I just did this an hour or so ago, so we'll see how long this lasts.
I see now from other comments that it won't likely last for long. Bummer.
Thank you so much, I literally had the 5 in my cart and thought let me have a quick look on YT. So glad I came across this vid.
Excellent video. I have seen this behavior as well.
However, Eric leaves out another prime reason to not purchase any of the 5 series LabelWriters:
The DYMO Connect software.
Previous versions of their products allowed you to use their MUCH EASIER software to print your labels. DYMO Connect is the definition of User Hostile.
Wow! I JUST purchased the Label Writer 450 in the nick of time. I watched the price soar on Amazon, so I quickly purchased one a week ago. They are sold out everywhere. I ended up purchasing for 275.00( not including tax :/) in good condition. Thank you for this video!
Wow, good timing!
Congratulations Dymo! First come up with a lousy product, and then for being able to top it off with even a more stupid idea...oh let's use proprietary labels, and yes, there is a third aspect. How long did they think they can get away with this without people like Eric finding it. Even I would have stumbled upon this. Thanks Eric for saving me the trouble.
It's a very silly design 😞
What is "lousy" about the product itself? I'm looking to buy an LW450/LW550 and if being forced to use DYMO's own labels is the only problem, I'll go ahead and make my purchase.
@@MrHowardMoon compared to brother, they are very lousy. had a new expensive battery powered portable dymo label printer that didn't worked as well as the cheapest brother that I got for $19.
Thanks so much for this information. I value this info.
You are welcome. I value your support 🙏
I've purchased a number of each of the 400 Turbo, 450 Turbo and 4XL over the years. They have worked well. But less than thrilled about dropping WINDOWS support on the 400 Turbo. So futzin' around with various LINUX solutions- to be able to continue using these printers.
I won't be wading into the 500 series any time soon.
Thank you for the details!
This right here!!
You really ha e just saved me £185.89p was going to buy this about 10 minutes ago
Many thanks
John
Great heads-up! You aren’t necessarily saying “don’t buy a Dymo 5XL”, it’s probably a good quality printer, what you are saying is, be aware you will have to use original Dymo labels because any other “compatible third party” labels won’t work, as Dymo will hold you captive into only buying their labels! Not such a bad thing if you only print a dozen per week but “compatible” labels will work in the Dymo Turbo 330 440 450 4XL but not the 550 or 5XL. I expect Dymo own original labels won’t be cheap. But you’re diamond for putting this advisory out there.
I wish I had saw this video before. Just got my Dymo 550 and I’ll return right away. At least my old 450 Turbo does not have this “feature”.
Shame on you Dymo!
It's mind-blowing that Dymo did this. DRM on printer cartridges and K-cups never went down well with consumers and ultimately failed to lock consumers in like the manufacturers hoped. Dymo's idea is even more self-defeating. As expected, the new 5-series is *super* unpopular. On Amazon, Dymo has kind of disguised the outrage by re-using their 4XL product multi-listing, which has thousands of 5-star reviews. When you sort the reviews by date though, you see that every single 5XL review is a 1-star.
Something else to note: it's not just that you have to use authentic Dymo labels, they have to be authentic *5XL* labels. If you replace a faulty 4XL and have several authentic Dymo 4XL label rolls left over, those labels will not work. Madness.
The 4XL is a nice printer, even if it's a bit temperamental. Its 300 dpi resolution is crisp, and it's compact and self-contained. As for genuine Dymo labels, they're nothing special. I find aftermarket brands like Onyx are just as good.
Exactly. I'm glad you saw the disguised review/listing shenanigans. It was very low star as its own product so they merged it to hide the poor reviews.
Can you put of sizes in the 4XL- like a 4 x 3 is not in the drop down list but that’s what I want to use- there is 4 x 2.25 - do I have to get that size or is there a custom size I can create. ?
I Can fix all printer serie 450 and 4XL for minus $100
There's going to be a lot of angry dymo customers if they didn't see this video and bought these printers.
Starter roll may hold them off of the return date to pass.
I’m one of those people… returning it tomorrow. 5XL IS GARBAGE IM GOING GRAZY
Geez. Thanks for that info. This is a must ***share*** video. Some folks will simply boycott this type of move. No bueno.
OMG thank you so much for this video. Been grappling with why my dymo does not work for hours - its the labels, I find that pretty appalling business practices and will also be sending it back and buying another brand.
Thank you thank you.. I am researching printers and sooo glad I came across your video today, blessings to you.
that was a great explanation
Agent Eric - Mission Accomplished!!!
You've done us proud...
Lol 😆
I've been a DYMO customer since the days of their handheld embossing tape. I'll be shopping for another brand next time. Thanks for the warning.
You are welcome.
Thank you for explaining why I just waisted 2 hours why my new LabelWriter 550 will not print generic labels. Keurig coffee makers tried this crap with their proprietary K cups a few years ago and they found out real quick how annoyed consumers were with that, when hundreds of thousands their machines were returned shortly after purchase.
I am returning my Label Writer 550 as of this writing, for this reason and implore Dymo to learn from this soon to become fiasco, as thousands of these machines start finding their way back to Dymo HQ.
Live and learn
You are welcome. Yeah it's just like the Keurig thing, super stupid of them.
Absolute bullshit of them
The way you’re looking out for your viewers like this is respectable
Dymo labels only ☝️
I had just ordered the XL5 on Amazon and thankfully after seeing this video I had time to cancel the order. Back to the drawing board to find another one.
I am a long time Dymo Label printer user - I was about to buy a new printer and saw this video. Thanks for the heads up. The Dymo branded labels are 4 or more times the price of other Dymo compatible labels. I guess Dymo makes all their money on the label printers. Unfortunately they just have to be more competitive on the labels themselves. I could tolerate a price premium but not the price differential compared to non-Dymo labels.
good detective work Eric!!!
I discovered this myself with a new machine bought for our business. We identifed the RFID chip, tried using that chip to authenticate some aftermarket labels, no joy. As the OP mentions it's writable and counts off as the original roll is used up. Shocking consumer control - not seen this level of aftermarket lock-out since Dell printers. (lexmark, but not quite lexmark). Don't buy it guys. Send it back and tell them why.
Don't you just love watching successful companies commit corporate suicide in the name of increasing profits? I was about to purchase the new 550 Turbo, but wouldn't have been able to use the hundreds of rolls of stickers we have in stock.
Thanks for the informative video!
You are welcome.
My power light keeps flashing after putting in a new roll. I can't figure out what's wrong
I was just about to buy a Dymo. Thanks for the heads-up.
I was going to buy the new Dymo 5XL and yeah... I don't like restriction on my hardware so I didn't get it. Thank you for the info in this video.
Well now the lower than 4XL price point makes sense. Attract buyers with the price before they realise they're gonna get screwed by being locked into buying OEM labels.
Yes I was thinking the same thing. 👍
I wonder if this software also picks up what you are typing on these labels, who you are sending things to, etc. Might be more to it than just making money on labels.
I was just about to buy the 550, I'm happy i saw this first.
Send the hunk of junk back. That’s crap to force me to use something I do not want to buy.
I bet the "remaining labels" counter is inaccurate too, because how would they know that i manually ripped off some labels off the roll without printing on them?
Cool thanks I’ve been wondering about it
You are welcome 🙂
Was looking for a shippinglabel printer and found the 5xl. Glad that you made this youtube film. Now i can remove it from my list. Hope someone will find a way around this. Guess the brother ql1100 is the better choise for now although it is more expensive.
Happy to help 😌
Yep, I returned mine when I discover this. But you are missing another big item, their app update is horrible also.
According to Dymo, this was done to prevent printer jams caused by poor quality 3rd party labels. Yeah... ok Dymo, whatever you say. It's Aug 2024 and I was going to buy a Dymo, but not now. I refuse to be held hostage by any company.
It early says on the box that you can only use their labels
Hi I came here with this issue and worked out a fix. Take the rfd stick off the roll and slap on the printer spool works a charm
It will still count down and run out
I am in total agreement with you about the DYMO 550. I bought two of them and had dozens of rolls of labels left over from the 550 Turbo model, so I thought I was ahead of the game. The only reason I moved to a newer printer was because Windows-10 was no longer supporting the older printers. I am a long-time user of DYMO machines and I am so disappointed in this latest move.
It gets worse! Here's s copy/paste from Dymo's Amazon UK 550 listing.
The 550 was released on the 1st October 2021 & here's s review under that model..
Super print labels

I have used these Dymo labels for years, a fantastic system. Excellent delievery.
They're re-using a Dymo label listing by changing the title & images ect. so all the good reviews for labels, from before the 550 was released, mask all the recent one star reviews!
So not only are they trying to rob you blind (Dymo labels are just under 20p per label whereas third party labels cost 2p approx) they're also involved in deception trying to cover up that they've ruined a perfectly good business through greed and hubris!
From experience...Many of the times, its the resellers and distributors ask for this so that they can upsell specific labels. Some even go as far as to have RFIDs made for them, so that the customer HAS TO buy the supplies from that reseller only.
How are there reviews from 2017 on Amazon for this printer. Seems like there are carryover reviews distorting the review score.
They had a separate listing that got awful reviews so they merged it with one of their other older listings to disguise it.
You can buy writable RFID stickers. I wonder how hard those Dymo tags are to copy? Can you copy it to an RFID sticker and then put that sticker inside a third party label roll?
even if we could, why should we have to do it?
Wish I would have seen this before I bought the product!
I'm having issues printing with original labels too
We are a large Multi-National and we have already binned Dymo for that reason
Ban them 💪
Thanks for the video & exposed DYMO's tricky nature. After much frustration, I looked up the specs on our 550 and saw this "feature" listed, yet I couldn't figure out what was so special about the DYMO labels I had on hand vs. the third party lables since neither roll would print. Turns out our IT department held onto the rolls that came with the printer, so beware of using older DYMO label rolls with this printer!
Now I'm wondering: is it possible to remove the RFID from the DYMO roll of corresponding size and place it inside a third party roll as a workaround? Could you try this and let us know if it works? Thanks in advance if you do end up testing out this theory!
actually, you can take the RFID tag out and tape it to the side of the printer and install 3rd party labels... BUT after the counter reaches zero the printer/software says the printer is out of labels even though the roll is not actually out. it appears that the RFID tag is a 1 time use item. I'm guessing the software uses some type of serial number for each roll to "verify" its real.
If someone can copy the RFID before its used and paste it to a new chip that might determine if its a one time use serial number.
I was thinking of editing the label field on the RFID tag, I think it rewrites the tag after every print because if you printed from another computer on the network locally it would still know how many labels are left. I could be wrong tho, it may be stored in the software.
@@thecollegepicker it‘s stored on the tag!
We gotta figure out how to rewrite it back to full labels.
On Amazon it has this statement, "ONLY WORKS WITH AUTHENTIC DYMO LABELS: Uses only high-quality, BPA-free DYMO Authentic LabelWriter labels; paper labels are made from FSC certified material" so at least Amazon lets you know. Other than that how does it print?
So what should we buy instead????
Thank you for this video!
yes just got it and now my labels not working... yup.... same issue.. wonder whyn it was cheaper than the others
This fact seemed pretty clear in the product descriptions I’ve read. Buyer beware.
I just bought the 5XL and spent an hour trying to figure out why it wouldn't print my smaller labels. I will return the 5XL tomorrow.
Thank YOU! Such a great review.
Thank you. I completely agree! I almost bought one before I watched this video. I'm not buying one now!
Good choice!
not only is the label expensive, it's very rare to find as well.
Thanks, I was about to buy this printer, you saved me time and frustration
You are very welcome
Thanks a lot dude, you saved me a bunch of money and heartache as I needed a quality label printer and this new DRM garbage would have had me by the balls. Seems like every company is trying to find some "sustainable" (consistent) income via consumables, makes the older stuff come across as better.
You are welcome, happy to help.
If you could read/write on that rfid chip couldnt you edit the number of labels to like some insane number then stick that rfid inside the dymo. Then use regular labels? just a thought.
Yes that's one of the ways that it could be worked around. Beyond my know how unfortunately 😭
You still need labels with that notch tho.
Thank you ... I was about to buy one. Not no more. You just saved me a lot of money.. Thank you.
You are welcome.
@@thecollegepicker what’s your thoughts on Rollin?
I wonder if you can cut out the RFID chip and stick it in the non Dymo labels and see if it will still work. Just wondering.
THANKS I WAS JUST LOOKING TO BUY A USED 550 OFF EBAY TO REPLACE A BROKEN 330
Bought this a couple of weeks ago and finally tried to set it up today. What is Dymo doing? Was it really necessary to 1 - sign up with driver support one and pay the $9.99 fee (which would be a monthly fee if I decided to keep it) and 2 - what is up with the user interface? Why won't it recognize my address book from the 450 and why can't I manually type in labels? Why don't they have an online guide that tells you how to use the user interface? Sorry, I know it's not you, just needed to vent. I am grateful that I found your video. Before I go through having to pack this up and return it, does anyone have any ideas where I can get more info?
Rollo printer it shall be then. Thanks for the heads-up!!
Okay so I’ve had the 5XL for 3 weeks… and I’m returning it. I’ve gone rounds of ordering and returning labels that were in Dymo boxes that didn’t have the drm rfid thing. I can’t believe the 4XL is 4-5x the price because it doesn’t have the drm. I need to find a competitor alternative stat
Well now we know, thank you Eric. I'm also disappointed in the new UI design. Why did they have to change the program? Where is the USPS barcode option?
This video should be a must watch if anyone in the market for a label printer
100%
thanks!! third option for Dymo....they lower their label prices substantially!
Same with HP printers ink cartridges
Thanks! You just saved me hundreds of dollars! ⚡👍🏻⚡
🤝
youre a freaking hero my dude so whats a good thermal label printer for a small business for labeling product and doing shipping labels?
Thank you for this video! That sucks that they dont allow us to use other labels.
Thx for the information , but why not suggestion wich one we should buy instead ?? that would help us further... Thx in advance I have the same problem with HP printer ... :( let me know the alternative please!!
Mine doesn’t work at all even with the label they gave
terrible
Thanks for the video! Going with iDPRT
Hello Nicholas, iDPRT is a USB printer, CHEECENT CR202 print server can support to change it be WiFi / Wired network shared in your office/home.
This is so frustrating, I just bought a printer and it wont't even accept the dymo labels I bought at the same time as the printer!!! Like great now I have 500 labels that are useless!
is it still like this? i just want to buy one - or another printer. do you recommend one maybe?
THANK YOU VERY MUCH! LIKE
You are very welcome. Like and heart ❤️
Thank you for this video!
Thanks ❤ for this warning and save my money 💰
returned mine after I found out. And purchased the older model 450
Good choice
Also, they are still selling the old labels that are useless on my 5XL. Sad.
the counter of remaining labels is probably so you cannot swap the RFID chip to refill the roll.
Correct. The remaining count is written on the rfid tag. Once it hits zero the chip will no longer let the printer print
Have you looked into wether Dymo printers work with the new M1 chips? I have not been able to connect my printers to print with my new mac M1 chip computer.
was thinking of getting one now that I know this I'm postponing the idea of getting one altogether for now
On the box they state this chip is to allow the printer to know how many labels are left before its empty
Such a great feature.
@@thecollegepicker haha 😅
Thank you for breaking this down! Regrettably i got the 5XL already but am attempting to return this as i cannot support DYMOs latest profiteering monopolising move
Yeah its a hunk of junk.
I almost bought one!
Thanks for sharing
I just purchased the 550. I haven't been able to print not one label. It keeps telling me its out of paper and I'm using the labels that came in the box. I've installed and uninstalled the software 3 times. I am returning it after 3 days. I have no more patience with this.
Jesus! You know keurig tried this crap with their brewers. Did not work out great for them
I forgot about the Keurig lockout. 🤦♂️
The box CLEARLY says that only works with Dymo Labels. It’s in front of the box. Like did you read that before buying it?
I have a drawer of dymo labels that do not work with it.
