She was ahead of the time.... nobody is expecting a R B or a hip hop track from a pop queen !!! So people are revisiting Madonna’s Erotica and Madonna’s Bedtime story and loving it!!!

This was her response to the backlash she recieved after her Erotica album and her SEX book, specially to David Letterman and the infamous interview where he tried to shame her. This is what happens when you tell Madonna to shut up and try to put her in a box. She gets more fierce under preassure.
Exactly. She was so criticized and called a whore and everything else bc of erotica and sex that she went into a depression then naturally in true form she blasted the people who made her feel badly with this song. I always say I’m not your bitch don’t hang your shit on me when someone tries to make me shut up bc I’m just a queen or I’m gay. It’s a free speech anthem as well as an anthem about equality. A really underrated album
This was after the Erotica era which was very controversial.
This was her response to that. Alot of people were against her, but I think Erotica and Bedtime Stories (the album this was a part of) is just more appreciated today, after all these years. Madonna has always been ahead of her time.
Speaking of, Bedtime Stories actually became #1 this year, in 2020, 26 years later!

Even though the song wasn't received well by radio, I remember VH-1 playing the absolute heck out of this video. And this was at a time when stuff like Foo Fighters, Nirvana, etc. were too "hard" for VH-1.

Videos like this remind me how old I am. There's a reason Madonna is the Queen of Pop, man. And I'm glad you're discovering her rich body of work.

This was the first album after Erotica and Human Nature is a response to critics and conservatism that atacked her years later. You’re so right. She never repeats the same dance moves like so many acts, she expresses herself through her dancing. Awesome ❤️👍 I had the privilege to see the Madame X Tour in Paris, she still has it ! I was blown away by her stage presence.
This is one of my favorites! This was after all her sex book drama.
She was so critized after her Erotica album. This song and Survival from the same album were the responses to people who said that her career was over... just for expressing her own sexuality and trying to empower, in a sense, women. And also talking about important issues like aids... always the queen! 👏
Well this whole album was off the back of Erotica album which had backlash and mixed reviews but a lot of people like me thought Erotica was underrated. Then Ray of Light came and turned her popularity on its head like it was back in the 1980’s.

In addition to reasons you mentioned, this was the fourth single from Bedtime Stories and by this point in her career, it was hard for Madonna to get much airplay beyond the first couple of singles from an album. Also, if you look at her recent hits at the time ("Take a Bow," "Secret," "I'll Remember," "Rain"), they were all ballad or midtempo. In the mid 90s R&B and adult contemporary ballads were huge. "Take a Bow" was STILL getting lots of airplay when "Human Nature" came out and for whatever reason Madonna opted to go for riskier follow-up singles rather than release another ballad from the album. Some local stations started playing "Don't Stop" instead of "Human Nature," so it was clear there was an appetite for more Madonna at the time.

Although it wasn’t an enormous global hit in 1994, it has become one of Madonna’s most popular tracks since then and she has performed it since and updated it. Sometimes a track comes out that people aren’t ready for at the time but then it just hangs around. The whole album is underrated.
They were never going to play this on the radio. It is sick and has always been one of my favorites. The cultural impact though. She was the first pop girl, to show that hip hop influence. Of course now everyone does

Fun fact...she has mentioned that all outfits in this video were bought at the local adult store and those are not her cornrows, pieces were placed ontop of her blonde hair. Great video and great lyrics. This came out after she had released her SEX-book ("I did not know I could not talk about sex"), therefor the backlash after a lot of negative reactions. I love the visuals in this video. Still, she had been "controversial" for a while at this point in the 90's, so that is probably why it did not do better in the charts.

M is the ONLY wo(man) with balls in the business... always has - always will! This is a big part why I love her as an artist but most of all as a human being! After Erotica the media in general were not having it and didn’t pay much attention nor ever gave her credit... Bedtime Stories is a darker but absolute brilliant album, haunting and mesmerizing at times. I love it but general public & press tried to ignore it - shame on them! Madonna was/is too avant-garde in many ways and a lot of people try to minimize her art and these same assholes will be the ones praising her genius once she will be gone! A few things: the song references the "Sex" book, Madonna's poor treatment and bias by the Media during the release of "Sex" and the corresponding album ("Erotica") and what began to be a pattern of "Number 2's" (several of her albums in the 90's doing well, but missing the #1 spot) "Human Nature" was also the final single from "Bedtime Stories," and competed the same month in 1995 against the juggernaut single "Scream" by Michael and Janet Jackson, which shattered the Beatles record for debuting at #5 on the Billboard 200 (until Michael Jackson's HIStory and its first two singles "Scream" #5, and "You Are Not Alone" #1, no artist had debuted a single automatically in the top 5, since the Beatles) Also many radio stations would not play the controversial single due to Madonna D's use of "bitch" and "shit" in the chorus, until the song was edited, remixed or censored. She moved on quickly later in 1995, releasing the compilation album "Something to Remember" while she trained and filmed "Evita" in 1996.

it did bad on the charts because it was her last single from the album after Erotica, an album that was almost "banned" and for which she received a lot of backlash. She was basically say "F.U." to all those critics. She was the first woman in the showbiz to openly speak about sexual liberation and to actually do them in all forms of art...from music to videos, to book etc. It's thanks to this that all popstars from the 90s till now can now do what they are doing.

The reason this didn’t do so well was because so many narrow minded idiots had jumped onto the “I Hate Madonna” bandwagon. Following the release of the Erotica album, the infamous SEX book and the release of the erotic thriller movie Body of Evidence, the media labelled Madonna as “The Queen of Sleaze”, others referenced her music as “The Devils” music and she took a lot of stick. At the end of her The Girlie Show tour she vowed that she would never perform again... this was the first time Madonna opened up and was vulnerable from what they were writing and saying about her... her ART was misunderstood.... this song/video was a big F You to all of those critics. You’re right about the Symbol her dancers produced with the ropes as this was her referencing people saying that her music was “The Devils Music”. Truly underestimated song... one of my faves❤️❤️❤️ She recently made this available to download along with the remix’s, the first time she has done that with an old song (minus American life single). Pleeeeeease react to “Secret” from Bedtime Story... you will LOVE it!!! 😊

Bedtime Stories is one of her best, a revenge to the Erotica controversy, and her venture into rhythm and blues. Well, it is arguably a tamer and perhaps a "classier" rendition of Erotica's sex and romance.
This is an amazing video; beautifully filmed and choreographed but the song wasn’t a big hit so the video never gets the credit it deserves.
Until criate the album "Bedtime stories", Madonna came from a long-term massacre by the media, the church and conservatives in general. She had already been excommunicated because of the Blond Ambition Tour, had already been "stoned" by the public because of the music video "Like a Prayer" and even lost Pepsi's sponsorship because of that. She had already been criticized for the sexual content of the album "Erotica" and the book "Sex", and had already caused a scandal because of the documentary "Truth or dare" that she released. In short, all these works by Madonna fought against machismo, homophobia, racism and hypocrisy of conservatism. They went head-to-head with society at the time, and it sparked many boycotts, to the point where people believed that Madonna’s career was over. The album "Bedtime stories" was Madonna’s response to society, and a way of reinvent herself to continue her career.

i remember this time well. the first half of the 90s was not kind to Madonna due mainly to her Erotica album and Sex book. she pushed the envelope too far for a lot of people. this song and video was basically her answer to the critics. i remember being upset it didn't do that well but i also understood why.

I am a sexual woman, but I didn't like the erotica single however the album erotica as a whole was amazing .. I think Madonna in human nature is sexier than the erotica video, which is basically a porn song.. Madonna talked about how when men express themselves they don't criticize them as they do women, but I 've never seen a male singer go naked hitchhiking or fully naked in a cafeteria.. in front of normal people.. When shooting the photos for the sex book.. Normal people were shocked to see a full naked woman.. And it is normal to be shocked. My problem with Madonna at the time was that she should have expected to get that reaction if she was putting out risky work.. She can share her fantasies I mean who doesn't fantasize but I still believe she went too far with the sex book.. and to say that she had a cause to defend I don't see how walking down the street naked would have helped people with AIDS.. She could have just donated money but anyway I do think the album erotica was amazing except for erotica the single
