    You left the best part of the video out. The part that shows us how you connected the #4 cylinder coil pack plug. You said it was hard and I get that. I was hoping you would have showed us all the effort and time it took. I thought I was the only one having a HARD time connecting the plug to the pack

      Sorry, fiddled with that one for awhile! It is a job I would not want to do again Hopefully you got yours sorted out on the end! After doing these jobs I understand why people pay the prices they do for repair.

    Rick nearly the exact same issue with my 987.1 Cayman. Turns out I had a leaking coolant expansion tank that dripped on and ruined my coil packs and I had almost the same codes come through when I took it in. Had the packs and plugs replaced and now she runs great. Wish I had your mechanical skills! Nice job.

    Hey Rick, I took your advice and had Scott and Ben at Mcilvain fix a bizzare issue related to the spark plugs in my 2K 996 C2. I was getting a chirping sound from the motor whenever I was pulling away from a stop or giving it some rpms. Thought it was the accessories belt or idlers so I put a new belt on and no change. Next I took off the belt and ran the engine, no change. At this point I'm getting worried and called Scott. He said it could be a loose plug so I drove her down from Flagstaff and sure enough it was loose plugs, 3 of them. I put 10K on the car before this issue popped up. Probably someone couldn't reach them when they got swapped. Had new plugs and coil packs( the originals with 100K were still in the car) and a new coolant pump, low temp thermostat and coolant change done and could not be more pleased with this shop. These guys know Porsches, thanks for the recommendation, and by the way I mentioned that you recommended them on your channel and they remembered you. Thank you, Tom from Flag.

      HI Tom, that's great to hear. From the first time I talked with Scott about having my IMS bearing done he has been awesome. Down to earth and has always treated me like a friend. I can't recommend his shop enough. Ben is super cool too and a great mechanic. So glad they fixed your problem and all is well with your car. I love Flagstaff! Went to NAU and my best buddy still lives up there. We will be up there next weekend I think. Thanks again for sharing your story Tom. Cheers.

    Good job getting those done with the mufflers on! I did mine with the mufflers off and it was tight enough like that!

      Rick Dietrich no need to remove the mufflers. Put the car on ramps and lay under the back. There is plenty of room to get a wrench in there. The challenge is getting a torque wrench in to tighten them back up but it’s doable.

      For the life of me I could not get the right side rear cylinder coil and plug with out removing the muffler. Like Paul mentioned others can do it, but I could not. Your life will be a little easier if you do remove it, but give it a shot first. Best of luck. Oh, and get a set of ratcheting wrenches...totally worth just for this job.

      Well I had the mufflers removed because I was upgrading them anyway to a speedtech exhaust. I actually wouldn't have replaced the plugs or coils if I wasnt already in there. My car only has 29k miles so I am sure they had some life left. Happy Wrenching!

      not yet....probable mid November...been a colder than usual Oct so kind of disappointed. Going to do some 997 searching this winter and probably keep the 996 too. love the convertible.

      Very nice. Good luck on your search. I have dabbled in 991 territory a few times, but they are still out of range for now. It has been our coldest October on Record so far around here...I am glad the heat is gone, but me and cold are not close. LOL

      Rick Hutton I have some. I was going to recommend them to you, but then I saw somebody else already did. Every time I diy something on my car I spend some portion of the money saved on tools. I am amassing quite an inventory...

    Rick, you need to add a set of ratchet wrenches and a universal joint to your tool collection, if you don't have already. After years of working on cars, my most valuable tool set is a ⅜ drive socket set with universal joint and multiples of various length extensions.

    To anyone considering changing your 996 plugs:
    "the manuals" and most videos just say "unclip the coil packs, remove the two bolts and remove the plugs..." is it easier on the other 996's ??
    That does NOT work on a 2003 996 C4 (mine is a C4S but I don't think that makes a difference)
    I just did it today... almost.
    I could NOT get to #4.
    I saw the turbo videos, and they take off the rear bumper cover, and when I couldn't get to #4, I did it too (take off the wheels too! You will need the room). You will also need to take off the passenger side muffler (as Rick did), but my bolts are rusted solid, so I didn't. And that is why plug and coil pack 4 didn't get changed. I will eventually cut the bolts off and replace them.
    Some people say dropping the engine 4 or 5" makes doing #4 easier too.
    I will do all that when I do other engine work...
    Oh, I made a 5mm allen drive with "just enough allen" sticking out of the 5mm 1/4" drive socket to fit in the socket head cap screw (about 4mm is enough), then with a stubby extension, it makes a useful finger tool to get to most of the bolts.
    You are on your own if you change to the external torx bolts... What Rick did works... slowly...

    I had this problem. It fixed itself after I took it to the mechanic. Has ran for 9 mo since with no issues.

      Good plan taking it to the mechanic....It was a major pain to do. :) I honestly hope I never have to do it again. ha ha.

      Dave, no question about it. Really the big issue is cylinders 1 and 4. There is just no room to work and it doesn't help that I am a big dork and have never done it before. :) LOL Feels good to have done it myself and so far so good she is running great!
