  • James Spencer is a Regional Referee, Chemical Engineer, Attorney, and Real Estate Investor. He has been a referee for 27 years and is a referee I work with all the time! In this episode, James gives some great and practical referee advice, tells his thoughts on VAR, and has one of the craziest red card stories I have ever heard.

What are your biggest tips for someone that is just about to start their referee career? (I’m 14)

Take every game super serious, even if it’s 5 a side u8s.
Be confident with every call you make
      Be okay with criticism
      Be firm with your decisions
Always look professional ie. fix your hair, tuck in your shirt good posture etc.
Go with your gut, its usually right.
Give a good pregame talk with the players letting them know what you expect and what they should expect
Be nice to everyone, but remember, not everyone is or needs to be your friend.
Always take initiative when working with your assignor
have fun, if you don’t take a breath and relax, you won’t see that most coaches, players, and refs aren’t going to say or do anything.
Be proactive, fix a problem before it gets worse.
And just breath. No one is going to do anything terrible to you. I’ve had scary moments before but remember, you’ll always have more refs, a field marshal, the police, and most coaches there on your side, so don’t be scared

Great points from Omar 👍🏼. Just to add to what he said - you want to make sure you are in control of yourself the whole time you are refereeing. You will face some difficult situations but if you can stay in control of yourself you will be able to handle all of them. Good luck and I hope you really enjoy refereeing!

I discovered I like being a referee a little late I guess, I’m 26, I’ve been doing a lot of HS games this last year and I’d like to try to get to ref at a more professional level. Do you think it’s late for me to try to take this path?

Absolutely not! On the first episode of the Referee POV Podcast (on Spotify) I interviewed Elton Garcia who is a USL and MLS Referee and who just won the USL Referee of the Year award. He started refereeing in his twenties just like you. If you really work hard and build good relationships with people you have a great shot at becoming a professional referee.
