If anyone needs a way to safely and effectively remove tape ins at home without damage, go get the Garnier fructis brilliante shine spray (the green spray bottle with an orange cap). It removes them with absolutely no effort and they slide right out with no damage 😘 thank me later!

Thanks for answering the question that is primary on my mind when viewing this! Garnier products I trust that are not expensive salon types like my favorites shampoo system biolage and their conditioners but my budget never can afford styling products from salon styling products so I had tried Garnier smoothing oil and styling sprays for use of hot styling tools and I was impress inspite of my cosmeteolgy training and brainwashing over the use the use whether an hair product is original salon product that has the right ph balance versus grocery store cheaper product like suave. So it is nice to find advice that includes us of product that is not going break my budget. When ellebangs recommends that one should do not get to relax on up keep of natural hair , I immediately agree with her because the quality and right shampoo and conditioner is even more important because a bad shampoo and conditioner like suave can dry the natural hair out more causing more potential for natural hair and extentions twisting with each other creating matted messes that is hard get rid of especially if one uses imitation hair. Shampoos and conditions that is not salon originals that has to ideal ph is Garnier and Patiene. Tresame which I am not sure if they are designer salon inspired product but there products shampoos and conditions are good with prices lower than high quality in results hair health.

My reference that I had shared is solely concerning that shampoo and conditioner for one's natural hair not for the extention cause either than extentions that are 100 % human I do not know too much about specialized shampoos for fake hair and fake hair wigs. I am new at that subject.

Any chance you could do a video on how to maintain or touch up roots with highlights. I am trying to do all the maintenance at home these past couple of years and have had fun but cannot seem to find a way to get these grays taken care of. Thanks a bunch

I use coconut oil to remove my tape in extensions. I put oil in the microwave and apply as a hot oil treatment not only to the extensions it all of my hair. Tape ins slide right off.
The extensions will be oily, so dip the taped part into some talc/baby powder, allow some time to soak up the oil. Then you can easily remove tape, and wash the extensions really well before reapplying tape.
*Initially I thought my hair was thinner but I realized it was because I got used to having the extensions in and how much thicker my hair felt. Take before and after pictures to see if/how your hair differs between extensions. Also, make sure the grow out is not too much where the weight of the extensions begin to really pull on your hair and add weight. Better to remove more often then wait longer and possibly cause damage.
I like to give my hair a couple of weeks between removal and replacement. I use a halo in between. Healthy scalp maintenance is important and it’s hard when constantly wearing extensions.

I have had tape in extensions for 3 months now, but took them out for about 2 weeks before putting them in again. My natural hair is long, but I just wanted to add a bit of length my extensions are 22 inches long but that is only about 2 inches longer than my hair. I have been only washing my hair 2 times a week and I always use a hair mask on all the hair. Put leave in conditioner and let them air dry.

My actual hair extensions start to thin and break off at the ends after only a couple months with new hair. My last hair was nearly five inches shorter than originally after 11 months. This time it has been two months and I can see the ends are thinning. I take extra good care of my hair, am careful with and limit heat, and use professional grade products. Any suggestions?

Hi Elle! I have a question for you. I recently started installing my own tape ins I know it's better to have a professional install them but I wanted to give it a try anyway to save a little money lol I've installed them 3 different times now over the past year and the last time I removed them not only was my hair noticeably thinner but alot shorter now maybe I accidentally trimmed too much of my own hair while adding layers to extensions etc is it possible for them to make your hair so much shorter I've heard of it getting thinner but not shorter so I'm wondering if I'm not damaging my hair or have traction alopecia now it's kind of scary!! Please help!!!

So I have this client that gets regular keratin bonding extensions. She used to get them in our salon but in a different area. So I removed her extensions and was shocked how her natural hair under the bondings was so fine matted and short it was just as long as the last set like 5cm long🫣
She is now a regular of mine but every time I remove her extensions her hair underneath is short and wispy. There’s nothing to cut really as there nearly no ends to cut 😬
With extensions she has this full long hair but without it she wouldn’t even be able to have a short bob because the hair in her back is just way too short and never grows past her last set🫠
When I first saw her my immediate thought was she is not able to carry the weight of long hair extensions but on the other hand she naturally would never get full long hair anyway. Her color is just a gloss to richen her natural mousy hair up so that’s not the reason her very fine hair doesn’t grow more. I’m having her for the 5 time and her hair should have grown by then past her shoulders but it always breaks at her last set😐

I am DESPERATELY in need of advice! I always had straight, thin hair, and I always wanted thicker hair so when I discovered i-tip extensions a few years ago, I thought my thin hair problems were solved!
The problem was that co-vid descended on the world about a month after I got my first i-tips, and here in San Francisco, with all salons being forced to close temperorarily for the better part of a year, and the few stylists that tried to see a few clients here and there were getting HUGE fines if caught.......my extensions ended up in my hair for almost six(!!!) months.
And because it was my first time getting i-tips (I had tape ins once before), I was COMPLETELY, blissfully, ignorant of the horrific damage slowly occurring to my hair. I eventually complained to a friend who had been getting extensions for years, that mine were really bothering me because my hair had grown about 2 inches, and I could only comb or brush below the i-tip, plus they were starting to fall out.
My friend looked HORRIFIED when she parted my hair in the back to see what was going on. Basically, all my new growth, hidden under the top layer of my hair, had become hopelessly knotted into about five biiiiiig dreadlocks. My friend spent hours and hours removing to extensions and TRYING to unknot the dreads. But a lot simply had to be cut off.
Before extensions, my ponytail would have had the same circumference as roughly my thumb, maybe a bit more. At that moment, my ponytail barely had the circumference of my pinky. I already had thin, fine hair, now I felt like I had BARELY any hair at all.
So what was my remedy for this? MORE extensions!! I ordered more itips online, I found someone on Craigslist who could install them until salons could reopen. And I have had extensions in my hair continuously since then. And even though now I havent had to leave mine in for insane amounts of time, I still feel like every time I get them taken out, I lose a LITTLE bit of hair, a little bit always gets ripped out. And certainly my hair can't grow fast enough to keep up with the loss, so I basically feel like I'm trapped by extensions, I KNOW I need to figure out some way to wean myself off of them, I don't know.... But SOMETHING has to be done.
Does anyone have any advice? At this point going extension free is pretty much out of the question, I have SO little hair left that didn't have to get cut off with the dreads, and the new growth from where the dreads were, is between my chin and cheekbones, plus there's that little bit I lose everytime they're changed out....
Is there a better, less damaging type of extension, or less damaging technique? I did have tape-ins once, but once the glue on the tape started wearing off, and the extension would be sort of half hanging off my strands, it was a huge hassle... Please tell me how to free myself of these extensions! I want it to be the case where I can have them put in once in a while for a special occasion, and have my hair look fine when theyre out.

any updates on your situation? i'm so sorry you went through that. i think that all extensions, especially the semi-permanent kind, cause some sort of damage due to tension on your hair and scalp. you should wean yourself off of them as best as you can. it's hard, but you'll have to do it eventually. the sooner you do it, the sooner you'll heal and put this all behind you. the longer you leave the extensions in, the more you're prolonging that damage. i'm sorry. but, for what it's worth, people say that invisible bead extensions (IBE) are the least damaging. perhaps you can look into that. good luck, you're not alone!
