Transformers Movie 1986 Rare Storyboards of Decepticon Attack on Autobot Shuttle

- A few months ago, the storyboard artist for Transformers the Movie 1986, Peter K Chung, posted his rare 1986 storyboards of the "Decepticon Attack on Autobot Shuttle" in his instagram account. The storyboards reveal some insight into the original vision of the violent attack, which was even MORE violent than what we saw in theaters:
- We actually see Brawn get cut in half by Megatron's gun.
- We see Prowl's Spark get a direct hit from Scavenger's gun.
- We see Ironhide and Ratchet stop shooting, which gives the Decepticons a moment to return fire. Then Ironhide and Ratchet both explode after they hit the ground.
While it pained me to see my Autobots die such horrible deaths, I somehow got motivated to spend two days on this animatic, which adds some basic camera moves, music and sound effects to the storyboards. The pacing is intentionally slow (2.5 to 3 seconds for each shot) so that you have time to see the details or pause.
AI voices are used for Prowl, Ironhide and Brawn. Prowl and Ironhide's lines are from an early draft of the movie, while Brawn's line "Today's a good day for your funeral!" was a quote I found on the internet that I chose to add in.
Editing done in Capcut and Premiere. Sounds effects from the tfcog website and ripped & compiled by Grimbot and Taggenagger

I have a feeling the ambiguity came about when they decided to make these scenes less intense for younger viewers
@@EveryDooDarnDiddlyDay Most of it came about when Brawn was omitted from the list of the movie's dead Autobots given in Dark Awakening. Even appearing alive next to Huffer, who was among the dead Autobot list featured in Dark Awakening, in the Season 3 episode Carnage in C-minor.

GREAT ANALOGY!
The Decepticons became more powerful when they took over Cybertron. The Autobots and Decepticons were both low on it when they crash landed on Earth. Both factions goals were to return to Cybertron and restore, but unfortunately the Decepticons beat them to it. If the Autobots took over Cybertron I’m pretty Optimus would’ve ordered his soldiers to destroy the Decepticons.
That would've been traumatizing, but fucking cool. Freaking shot the shit outta Ratchet and Ironhide until they exploded, blasted Brawn in half. The 80s gave no fucks in kid films.
And showing Prowl being killed from inside his body too. Yeek! 😮💡
I like how it depicts Prowl taking some form of cover/defensive position, rather than just mindlessly breaking cover and firing a pot shot, as he did in the movie.

Yeah, and given what else was described in the commentary tracks... it had some pretty gruesome stuff here and there, especially with the Sweeps pulling Ultra Magnus apart.
The first 20 minutes was most gruesome. This massacre, prime, and unicron eating that planet in the beginning.

That's actually really nice that you gave there the original soundtrack "Attack on the Shuttle" that Vince DiCola originally written for this scene, before it was replaced by Instruments of Destruction by N.R.G

Damn Ironhide didn't even get up after those shots like he did in the final film. The decepticons were just ruthless in this version. If the final cut scene traumatized kids than this would've scarred them for life. Also felt like they should've kept the shots from 2:43 to 2:54

I like how these storyboards show the Coneheads and Insecticons turning up after the slaughter, as if the more powerful Decepticons where 'securing the area' first.

Actually, if you remember from the final episode of season 2 “B.O.T, Megatron gives a bit of reference to how he may view his “combiner/commando Decepticon teams” when he says to Skywarp: “Decepticons do not have to request ANYTHING from Combaticons.” My thought is that Megatron values his Decepticon soldiers the most and the combined teams are viewed as more of the “foot soldiers” of the Decepticon force, and therefore show most of their value through their assignment of being the first ones in to clear the path for everyone else.

It's amazing how much detail is in the storyboards alone, this movie was something special. I've always heard the original was far more violent but this is my first time seeing it! I also love Starscream's calm walk behind the Constructicons like he was savoring the moment.

They made these autobots look so weak. Braun was one of the strongest autobots, Prowl was a cop autobot, Ironhide wanted to fight so badly, how you make them this weak. That’s a disrespect to the autobot nation
Ok this makes more sense than the movie version...I always wondered how ironhide and ratchet could fire so many shots and not hit anyone...this showing the decepticins taking cover makes more sense

Man I absolutely wish that the animaters and producers would go ahead and remaster Transformers the Movie with all the deleted scenes and story boards to make a new director's cut or extended version of the movie!!! Maybe it can happen with the 40th anniversary of the film!!! We're all a little older now, so it won't be as traumatic as it was in '86!!!!

I totally agree. I've been saying this for years. I have seen some fan-made Transformers videos that have captured the essence of the characters and style of anime that rivals the movie itself, and I've been a fan for 30+ years.

I think that’s an earlier version of the script you’re thinking about, Blitz, where yes, Prowl was melted into slag from the inside out by Mixmaster (not Scavenger) and Ratchet and Ironhide are shot into so many holes they fuse together and explode into “smoking, glowing fragments.”

So we finally see the infamous Brawn blown in half bit, if this was actually in the movie then it would've been PG-13.
I read in another version of the script, Brawn's body was blown apart just like here, but Prowl's body actually melted and Ironhide and Ratchet were fused together then blown apart. Now THAT would've been both awesome and brutal!

Yes I read that version of the script too. This was probably a second toned down version to that original scripted scene. Notice how Ironhide and Ratchet actually explode and “smoking glowing fragments” are indeed falling down as Megatron transforms. This is actually pretty close to that original scripted scene with the exception of Prowl melting. I’m curious if that was ever storyboarded at a point or if it was entirely just a first u unedited script

The detail of Ratchet turning to look back at Ironhide when he's hit seems to have been a later addition to the scene direction. A perfect final character note for the Autobot medic.

Brawn comes across as a bot that would of taken out at least three decepticons with him before dying. They did him dirty.

"I don't take so easy!" shoulda become 'I don't break so easy!' on the shuttle scene. I...still don't jive with the idea that so many died; him too.
Looking back at the movie I think most kids wanted a complete 2 hour movie with a cohesive story with upgraded animation. At least that’s what I expected going in. Not a Autobot slaughter fest
I 100% agree. I disagree with the idea that the deaths made the movie memorable. The Movie was memorable to me because it was a friggin epic movie about my favorite toys.

Hate how the autobots got all the deaths while the decepticons almost go thru the battle unscathed. Why didn't we see them suffer losses? To think we would've had more autobots die in some story boards and mirage had a death scene too. 😳
Agree. I want to account for all season 1 Autobots during the battle and show they all survived, possibly even the 4 from the Shuttle.
@@Artiststan 1-2 of them should have been killed or damaged here. They had to get rid of the line anyway. I'm guessing they wanted to show a dark grim opening of little hope for the autobots as they were setting up a new sort of beginning with new characters.

Redrawing the shuttle scene was something i loved doing mostly cause it was when i was drawing at least more then one character on a paper
They really need to give this film the Snyder Cut treatment and go in and add all these missing details!
This maybe my bayformers kicking in but i like how incredibly violent this turned out it makes you feel even more sad how they get massacared and I would've balled my eyes out. Obviously this is still a "Kids movie" so they got to turn down the violence a notch.

If Optimus would have just STFU with the speech and unloaded on Megatron, Optimus wouldn't have died himself. So many bad decisions on his part.

I remember reading the notes from Hasbro to the production staff of the movie and it was a piece of paper that explicitly stated who they could get rid of pretty much everyone from the 1st season except jazz & bumblebee, they could get rid of Red Alert and Smokescreen of Season 2.
To all of those who were saying that the original cut of the 1986 movie was more dark and violent well….this would’ve definitely done the job

My gawd 😳 The level of violence in this unedited scene would’ve been a bit much for children for sure.
This scene still pisses me off. I want to know how anyone with a functioning brain thought this was a good idea. Completely disrespected the autobots. Every shot missed the Decepticons. Every shot hit the autobots and did max damage. IronHide, Rathet, Brawn and Prowl all deserved better. Way better.
In fact, this scene in the storyboard looks more logical, the Autobots would not have been able to inflict critical damage on anyone due to their location, they were on the open part of the shuttle where there were no reliable barricades, while the Decepticons actively took advantage of this advantage
I wonder if the Shuttle Attack theme can be used for a new attack scene from the outside as a gigantic army of Decepticons swarm the ship after they hit it, ans the Autobots would try to use the defense systems to hold them off. But then we cut to the final scene where the Decepticons manage to get in and that's where Instruments of Destruction plays.

Hell im traumatized all over again, seeing what could have happened. Geezus, now i'm glad we only got what we got as kids back then. It's something disturbing about the fact that these ideas were presented and even fleshed out for a movie for unsuspecting children.

Wow. Definitely would have scarred a few children. Much more graphic than the final scene. Have a feeling just this shuttle fight would have earned the film an R rating.
The adult me thinks this is awesome but keeping so many deceptions alive while slaughtering so many autobots is bs. The deceptions should have had as many casualties, taken autobot prisoners, and both would have turned into unicrons minions for galvatron. That way some autobots could have lived on in new bodies as bad guys and be given redemption arcs later in the series. Ironhide and brawn as bad guys would have been good to see. Recycle the toy line don’t destroy it, idiots.

Over two (2) decades later, still bring chills (only managed to see the movie in full in 2000).
I got spoiled in the series these characters would be revived and ok again. This time, Megatron et al are not holding back.

But that is one part I hate about the movie - everything dies or is destroyed by one shot. I can understand the Megatron Gun being powerful, but everyone was dying by just taking one shot. Hasbro’s was wrong trying to kill off the old toys.

You did a good job, one complaint is that the script says “Ratchet and Ironhide are FUSED” but they look pretty distant in the storyboard
Thanks! This storyboard is different than the Ironhide/Ratchet "fused together" storyboard. In that storyboard, Brawn got eaten up by Insecticons.

Brawn wasn't known for being a smart warrior. He relied to much on his strength for battle. Plus he did blast Megatron with his own fusion cannon once, so he probably just thought megs wasn't so tough to deal with.

Ironhide and Prowl are like Prime’s right hand dudes. Really shouldn’t have sent his 2 main guys together with his top medical officer. Brawn, though tough wasn’t really like mission essential. I wonder which bots fans would pick to make this trip to Earth if they were in Prime’s shoes. Hmm?? Huffer and Gears maybe?? Cliffjumper for sure.

Megatron's lines were great. "Die, Autobots!" He was one of the greatest villains in 80s cartoons.
There was one missing... I dunno if it was a scene or storyboard described in one of the commentaries, where the heat of the blasts caused ironhide and ratchet to melt and get stuck together, and then blasted apart again... that would have been super hardcore AF. Even for a movie only involving the deaths of robots. that would have been a super R-rated thing to see.
I know this might sound horrible... but this kind of destruction is something I REALLY wanted to see in GI Joe and Transformers... LASTING consequences. I wanted to see members of GI Joe get killed, even super badass characters like Snake Eyes getting taken out violently would have really demoralized the GI Joe team. Honestly, i REALLY did not like the way GI Joe the movie turned out. It was okay... but misguided. Arise Serpentor, Arise was a MUCH better vision of what I think Gi Joe, the movie should have been.
This is soooo much cooler than the movie. Instead of one shots that are PG this blows the autobots in half or into pieces. MUCH better.
I love the energy of the drawings at 1:30, that line of action and anticipation really makes you feel the energy and motion of Mixmaster (I think) before the tension releases when he fires.
By the way I kinda wished you kept instruments of destruction by NRG in there. It made for a badass music.

Yes if you notice Megatron did not want to face Brown that's why he transformed quickly and said die Autobot not die out Autobots..
His toughness reputation what's more than talked about among the other decepticons so Megatron knew his toughness and you had to take him out quick

That would have been a pretty cool battle. A bit more violent, but weren't they going after the R rating? On second thought, kids in the 80s cried when Optimus died. Who knows if we were ready for those kind of scenes. Maybe a remake of the original cartoon with the extras would be great now.
This scene bothers me the most in the movie. Why couldnt the autobots get at least one? They could have easily put in some Decepticons there as cannon fodder.

This was always a plot hole for me. The Autobots are just cruising along in space when out of nowhere the Deceps bust in and wreak havoc? Didn’t the shuttle have radar? How did it not detect 30+ Decepticons floating around in their vicinity? What, are we supposed to believe, that Megs and the gang just happened to be hanging out behind the exact asteroid the shuttle was going to fly by and had a functioning cloaking system set up? I see why they never even tried to acknowledge this in the movie, too complicated. I mean the only way it would make sense is if it was an inside job. Maybe Ironhide struck a deal with Megatron, so he turned off the radar and purposefully flew the shuttle to the right location! Then at the end, Hide gets double crossed! Oh 💩, didn’t see that coming.
Haha! Interesting theory! I love hearing all these theories. I think in the original, there was some kind of meteor storm that was distracting the Autobots and possibly interfering with the radar.

This was interesting to see. I love that fans are getting their hands on earlier drafts of the movie as it gives us insights into what was originally planned and how it developed into what we eventually got in 1986.
Honestly I think there could be an interesting video essay about G1 transformers and how it introduced a whole generation of kids in the eighties to the brutal nature of Reagan era capitalism. It began with Reagan deregulation that lifted the restrictions on advertising during television aimed at children which kicked off the golden age of Saturday morning ascertain meant that gave us shows like he-man, GI Joe, the Transformers and many others whose conception was driven purely by the need to sell toys above all else. Which culminated in the 86 transformers movie that exposed something of a disconnect between the young audience and the executives at hasbro overseeing its production. The brutal deaths of much loved characters in the movie shocked audiences who genuinely weren’t prepared for that as the show never showed any of the transformers dying. At the time kids who watched it in theaters had no clue Optimus Prime who they’d embraced as something of a father figure was killed off because his toy was being discontinued. And let’s not forget that the backdrop to all that death and destruction was an existential threat that was a gigantic planet sized transformer that was seemingly unstoppable. That’s a lot for a ten year old to take in when the show the movie is based on is a lot more light hearted than that.
As fans matured and became adults they were able to appreciate the darker tone of the movie and the bold choices it made, all the more so because hasbro faced a backlash at the time and took that feedback on board meaning that it was something of a one off. Where companies like Hasbro when making a movie tie in these days will stick to the tone of the series a lot more and won’t go balls to the wall trying to traumatize their target demographic like they did in 1986
