Are $280 swim trunks just stupid? Should anyone actually buy these? Like, what’s really the difference between $20 and $200 swim shorts?

🧍🏻My Sizes
I'm 5'6" with shoes on and about 125 lbs after dinner. I have a 35" chest; I usually wear XS tops and 28x28 pants (or 28x30 cuffed).
My best suit jacket size is 34 Short, but even 34S needs alterations (mostly shortening of the sleeves and jacket), so my best-fitting suits are custom.

I'm all for the "Buy Once, Cry Once" philosophy to avoid obtaining a series of subpar products that just need to be quickly replaced, but $280 for a pair of swim trunks is insanity.
I wear Vissla, O'Neill and Quiksilver. A lot have the velcro with lace up, a large pocket for my phone and found some with my favorite colors. O'Neill got a thing that connects to the O'Neill shirt so you can't get naked if a wave washes over you or something and you happen to lose your shorts. Got them for 30 to 50 at REI.
Glad to see Fair Harbor mentioned, I got a pair from them this year and think they’ve been great!
What a sweet looking watch! Thank you for bringing this brand to my attention. This is the kind of unique and quality product I want to know about.
Thanks for sharing!
You may look into Spier & Mackay's latest offering. They came out with a pair that pretty closely emulates the look of Orlebar Brown with front buttons and side tabs but for about a fifth of the price. There is a summer clearance sale going on right now though so I'm not sure how much longer they'll be around.
I’m a big fan of OB, but generally just stick to the sales (otherwise out of my budget).
I’ve had a pair since 2018 and they are still in great condition
Huge fan of OB too. Their clothes are lowkey great for summer weather. The swim trunks dry quickly and have an amazing fit.
Orlebar Brown make the best high end trunks 👍
Spoke London do awesome swim shorts in several hundred different sizes. WELL WORTH spending the £££ to get some swim shorts that actually fit properly.
Although I love your RUclips Shorts, I always look forward to the longer videos!
Good to know!
I would rather spend $4k on a NOMOS watch than $280 on a pair of swim shorts.
“If you aren’t paying for it, someone else is”
Well said.
Yea. The manufacturer, who probably paid some seamstress in San Salvador $5 to make them.
Yay, Brock! Keep them coming!
The incredibly lug-to-lug on most NOMOS watches has kept me away from them, but I've never been able to try one on. Thoughts on how they wear on a smaller wrist?
The Minimatik has a shorter (normal) lug to lug. But the long lugs are okay for my smaller wrists, esp on the 35-37mm dials.
@@BrockMcGoff Good to know! My wrist is about 16.5cm and I usually wear watches with a L2L of 46mm or less.
I got a pair of olebar brown, and I have loved mine. Would recommend highly.
The Uniqlo last a long time as well. Got a Patagonia on sale. Deeper pockets, thinner fabric than Uniqlo. I wonder if high end fashion brands that charge 280 USD for a pair of swim trunk do they actually pay decently the factory workers who make the products.
Brilliant video!
Many thanks, NOMOS! 🙏🏻
It's stupid... take it from someone who bought Paul Smith socks for $30.00... if I need to think of the price, than I can't afford it.
The company pricing stuff at 280 dollars shouldn’t fall on the consumer to pay for the employees..
Mine is only $2-4 and its still look good to wear
“Ross Dress For Less” I know that store well my cousin lives in Florida keep the video’s coming. Andrew from England.
Wow Brock is in incredible shape, sheeeesh
Hey Brock, appreciate the content it's been very helpful. I'd like to ask, what kind of clothing would go with Chelsea boots? I found a pair of Hunter Chelsea boots lying around my house that are a kind of olive green. Not the best colour imo, but what would you recommend?
Can you make a video on how to dress well for a physical job?
I work in sales but i also have to be ready to get my hands dirty.
What are your ideas for someone (me) who has no money whatsoever for expensive clothes but needs a wardrobe update? I don't work anywhere or go anywhere that requires business casual.
Get a job 🤷♂️
Any experience with everlane trunks?
Me, watching in my Orlebar Browns: 😢
I mean, you can’t go wrong with OB if you have the cash!
I bought a pair of MMA shorts that I used as swim trunks from Walmart for like $12 and had them for a decade. I got rid of them because I wanted a pair with pockets, not because they were worn out. Paying anything over $35 for swim trunks seems excessive and showboaty.
For a second I thought who tf is this guy I don't remember subbing to, but then I got it - it's you, The Modest Man haha!
@@TheSultan1470 nah I just read the name Brock even though I watch just for him… yeah ik I’m bad with names 😅
Yah, those $280 swim trunks are definitely not worth the dollars, as my $385 Versace board trunks, which are black with a low keyed gold design trim around the waist, are no better, from a wear and quality standpoint, than my Tommy Bahamas, which while they sell for $80.00 in the big stores, I get them for $40-50 at Gabe's or TJ Maxx, or Peter Millar, which retail for $100-110, though can be had for $50-55 at the same discount stores. I'd say that one can obtain a quality attractive pair of swim trunks for $40-60, depending on where they shop.
No sane well adjusted male needs a $280-385+ pair of swim trunks, lol. I was on vacation, had too many of those fruity drinks🍹 and p!ssed away $385🤪
Though they are good lookin😂
As a collector of luxury time pieces, with a few Nomos in the collection, and retired Certified Master Maison(CSOMH), I love your Nomos!! Though I happen to be wearing their Polar opposite today in a PAM, they epitomize understated elegance, whether it be a T to a Tux, at a very fair price point!!
Continued Success🍻

It would means a lot to me.
Thank you

280? No
Quality is always the top choice but quality shouldn't have to cost a lot.
I think quality *has* to cost a lot if everyone involved in the process is going to be treated fairly. It doesn't have to be luxury/designer tier, but it can't be mass market affordable either.
are you 165cm without shoes???
About 5’5” and a half without shoes
Man enable the caption
They're enabled. It take RUclips a few hours to generate captions.
So you're remaking The Modest Man on your youtube channel now?
I changed the name of the channel. More details here if you're interested - ruclips.net/video/QWLZ9TVSqns/видео.html
But you're basically doing the same thing? I only subscribed because of you, not the Modest Man owned by some invisible owner@@BrockMcGoff
@@blablablaa14 not sure what you mean. I'm not involved with The Modest Man website anymore. The people who own it aren't involved in this channel.
But are you doing the same content here? I follow you, not the site@@BrockMcGoff
No
Id much rather spent $20 on a nokia A158 than $20 on swim trunks, but i already own lululemon/Neff trunks
Not 280$ though lol
Lets get real. You are paying for the status of being able to buy these, not because they blow anything out of the water. I have great $30-50 swim shorts that have lasted 6-7 years to date and still have years left in them. The price point means you can get a couple of colours and lengths if that is your thing.
Nearly $300 for swim trunks, yeah, thats for instagram, or to be seen in other peoples instagrams.
Love the video, but even more so, congratulations on the abs! Looking great 👍
No one should spend $280 on swim trunks. That's insane, idc how much money you have.
Speedos, Brock. It's time.
Great take, Brock! Since I don’t swim much, I’ve found that running shorts can pull double-duty as swim trunks (they’re basically the same thing as swim trucks - shorts with a liner).
What, $280???!!! 😳 Do you know how much wagyu beef I can eat for that kind of money???!!!😆😁
News flash: The H&M swimtrunks will also last multiple years.
Found two pairs of Fair Harbor in TJ Maxx. It was a great pickup, the more tapered fit was exactly what I was looking for.
Mr Marvis - top quality, decent prices. Obviously not designer and no flashy logos. Just amazing shorts in beautiful colours that will last forever.
Rather wear board shorts or linerless swim trunks. Can't stand the lining.
I really like Hurley walk shorts personally.
yes the fit is better
I think the takeaway of this video can be generalized to most clothing: nothing is really worth it at retail price. Or, maybe to be more precise, no ready-to-wear is worth it at retail price. Most high-end ready-to-wear is a good buy at a discounted price, but never at retail. When even high-end brands like Vilbrequin or Orlebar Brown discount their products on their own websites, there's little point in ever paying retail for them.
I used to wear bicycle pants then diadora which good quality.... After losing weight i bought speedo long pants 70 % off.... 😂
What are the best quality swim shorts besides Vilebrequin and Orlebar Brown?
I’ve bodyboarded for years and my swimming shorts were from hurley, quilsilver and rvca. They are great and never spent more than $40 on each.
Great points, but you missed the Italian brand, Peninsula which imo are hands down the best in style and durability.
280USD???? C'mon man. Nothing can justify that purchase 😂
I need to lose weight
The answer has to be no.
