This gives me goosebumps just like the original record did when I was in high school. The quality of this tutorial is unequaled. I love all the new production and text bits.... Sound quality is superb.... Amazing, you're the best!!
Tim Pierce Guitar Hi Tim, I hope all is well with you. Taking the time to leave such a positive comment here from someone who's done it all in the music business says a lot about you, and it really means so much to me! Thank you. If there's one guitarist in the youtube community that everyone aspires to be like it would be you...you're a true inspiration! cheers
I agree... I was thinking that today as I was listening to zeppelin in the car. I'm 51 and a lot of their music still gives me goosebumps.. so good ! ,,✌🎸
By far the best tutorial ever. Wearing black with a black background is perfect for focusing on the hands & guitar - no BS distractions - just a top quality guitar lesson. Thank you!
I'm so grateful for your videos. I'm in my early 60s and haven't played since before my kids were born. I wasn't good then just learned the basics. Arthritis makes many fret reaches impossible and alternate tunings help. My husband played so I have a guitar. I may never be able to play a lot of songs I'd like to and I won't recover enough from the financial crises so I can afford more guitars. Finding these excellent teaching videos of songs by some of my favorite bands from back then has made me happier and my life more fulfilling than I can say. Thank you.
+Linda Grubbs Guitars aren't cheap, but I've seen a bunch of channels talking about Harley Benton guitars that can be had for $100 and play pretty well. Check out "Nick in the States" here on RUclips. That guy seems to have a lot of fun with inexpensive guitars. Play what you can and enjoy it:-)
Besides The Rain Song, try the tunings that Joni Mitchell used. She had Polio as a child and worked out most of her tunes with one finger!! All bar chords in C# and Drop D, DADGAD and other tunings. She taught David Crosby how to do it. He was blown away. Go watch her play a few tunes and get your game on. I am a fingerstyle player and mostly play alternate tunings all the time. Check out Bert Yansch playing Back Waterside, just for how Jimmy Page learned it from him and did Black Water Slide on their album. Yeah, he stole it. LOL... Enjoy. Music is life, love and the way of all... Stay at it, Linda~
When I decided to learn this song I first went to Tim Pierce’s channel as Ive been a long time sub of his. Nothing but major props to him. As I watched Tim in his capacity playing this song in the studio , he said something along the lines of “ when I wanted to learn this song properly I went to ta friends channel named “Shut Up and Play”, Of course I had to follow Tims advice as I have always held him up as a real pro. Long story but he was on point. This is one of the best channels for starters up to more advanced players. Thanks Tim.
This guy is amazing in technique and instruction. I recommend everyone donate enough to keep this guy going. The effort he puts into these tutorials is easily the equivalent of a full time job so be generous!
Finally somebody who's just trying to teach and not make it about themselves I love that the focus is on the guitar and the music🖤🖤 brilliant and thank you
Great job man, I tackled this one in 1989 , it took about 3 weeks to get it right. the hardest part for me was the tuning. I would get hours into transcribing , just to find the tuning I was using wasn't right, and have to start over. today I wouldn't struggle much with this song, but back then it was like climbing Mt. Everest. Thanks for giving new players the fast track to one of Jimmy's most iconic compositions. I've taken a lot of grief for saying this, but I think jimmy page did his best work on the acoustic. I would love to sit down and pick with you for a while. we seem to have lots in common. Best regards, and very well done.
I just noticed after writing this that I was responding to a 4 year old post. Sorry. I kind of miss those days. I think it gives you a better understanding of the song if you do it yourself. In the 90s we could at least get books, Press pause on a cd etc.. I’ve always been blown away thinking of how Page learned off old blues and local records. I doubt he would be as deeply musical were he born today.
Hands down you are the best guitar tutor on RUclips. What makes the difference here is not just the superb accuracy, and feel for every song, but it is the fact that you are such an excellent educator. Thank you so much
This is might actually be the only post I have ever placed on RUclips, but I felt compelled to. As a guitar player who's been playing most of my life, and also a teacher for many years, it can be hard to get so much across in a short amount of time. You're clearly a great teacher and player with a sharp ear. I have been playing the song for years and yet discovering this video I have still learned a lot of little nuances and suggestions which have helped no end to play it better. This is a refreshing video from someone who clearly cares about what they are teaching and playing. I will spread the word over here in the UK about your site and videos. You're hard work and effort yields results for those like me. Huge thanks to you.
Appreciate the OP for posting the tuning/lesson. Yeah, it's a cute song and everything, but if Page was such a musical genius why was he compelled to steal so much music? This is obsessively documented in case you think I'm just making it up.
I’m now 69 and last picked up a guitar when I was 15. I adore Led Zeppelin and particularly this amazing composition. Having stumbled across this tutorial, I am fighting with all my might not to get in the car and go and buy a guitar. You sir, make it look so easy and play so beautifully that it looks so very achievable. My wife’s hidden the car keys but there’s always Amazon ! 😂 I salute your amazing talent Sir 🙏🏻
Hi Andy - I've watched your guitar tutorials for several years now, even when I did not own a guitar. I'm a 59 year-old pianist but I enjoyed watching to learn some of my favorite rock songs in greater detail. There are many fabulous guitarists on RUclips, but what makes your videos stand out is your complete musicianship, your obvious enthusiasm for the songs which just jumps off the screen, and your absolute mastery of conveying the art of guitar playing. You are a gifted teacher. Last year I got a nice acoustic guitar as a gift and have been playing it more than the piano! I've now been gaining even more knowledge from your videos than I did during my previous views, and for several years I've recommend your page to friends. The internet is saturated with guitar tutorial websites and RUclips channels, but I tell them if you want to filter out much of the crap, start with Shut Up & Play first. Thanks for your dedication and the hours you obviously put in to share your talents.
Definitely the best "The Rain Song" tutorial EVER! I watched some tutorials on this specific song and, well... they're ok. But this one delves into the heart of the song. Tuning, picking, comments on Jimmy Page's slightly different live performances... Simply incredible. By the way, I tried this on a 12-string guitar and it sounded fantastic! The sound became fuller and brighter. Really incredible, especially for those who play alone. It's worth trying if you have a 12-string guitar available. Well done! Great job! Thank you for this wonderful video!
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. Although I am playing for many years and know a huge repertoire of tunes, I have never really needed to learn this until recently when i was asked to play it at for a wedding ceremony. You laid this out perfectly and i was able to pick it up fairly quickly because you made it easy to see. THANK YOU !
My sister had pass away recently and I wanted to learn this song to play at her memorial service. I found a couple of version and stuck with this one as it represents the song as it was originally recorded and the history tidbits were great to hear also. Along with this video and practice I was able to learn, sing and play this by the time of her service in little more than a week. Thank you for posting this.
An amazing tutorial on this song - its spot on! You and Tim Pierce do the best most faithful renditions of Zeppelin songs I have ever heard. We can all thank George Harrison for saying "Zeppelin needs to do a ballad"- that got back to Page and the result is the best ballad ever written - and Ten Years Gone is not far behind. What I want to know is how the hell does someone just sit around and come up with something like this - this complex and this sublime?!
Revisiting this with you. I have played this all my life.... LOL, well, since around mid 70s. But it was tough in those days. As I did my best with standard tuning, so it sounded way off. Once learning the tuning it made me try alternate tunings of all kinds. And playing lots of other Irish tunes in alternate tunings. Now it seems my best playing is done in these alternate tunings and it always blows people away to play this note for note. And so much fun, Right?
Dude thank you soo much,I learned this song from my teacher like in 1990 or somewhere in that area,I quit playing for years around the age of 21 when I started dating this girl call "heroin" and boy was that a long and shitty relationship, but I've finally rekindled my love of the guitar and have been learning as much as possible, this was one of the main ones I wanted, this and bron-yr-aur,which I also used to know, well hopefully somebody on you tube has this lesson, anyway, thanks again man it means alot to me to be able to play this again and brings back fond memories of before the downfall, keep rockin brother, sweet les paul by the way.👍👍🤘🙏
You knocked this out of the park dude! Just plain correct. Your guitars are in tune. So many aren't on RUclips. Love Page's open tuning on this. Love your Les Paul alongside the Acoustic. I heard the electric in the original, also. Lifetime guitarist as I am really APPRECIATES a correct reproduction as this. Thanks very much!
You are an excellent instructor, calm, thorough, and a talented player. Black clothes on black background is the most effective way to demonstrate. Thanks very much.
Nature presents us with good people and bad people. You are one of the excellent people, for your work, great musician. Thank you so much for your magic lessons.
This is by far the best instructional video for this song I have ever seen. I've been playing this song for years with standard tuning (learned by ear from an album in the early 80s) and could never get the full sound you have helped me reach. Thank you so much!
Lovely that you add those little anecdotes..for example the first two chords being a tribute to George Harrison's Beatle song "Something"...You have been heaven sent over the years!
After 20 seconds of watching i decided i wouldn't even try to learn to play it for now, but still listened to the whole demonstration because it was just so perfect... you're amazing.
You are providing a wonderful gift to us players around the world, of all different experience levels. I appreciate your attention to detail and hard work. Sorry I am not in a position to contribute, or I would. Thank you kindly, sparky o/
sparkymoo Thanks so much for the nice comment bud. Don't worry about not being able to contribute. It's all good. I'm glad that you're getting something out of the videos. cheers
+Shutup & Play - Guitar Tutorials I'm in the same boat as +sparkymoo, as soon as I'm in a financial position to give, I want to do more than just say THANK YOU! Seriously dude, these are so well done!
Cool to see the open tuning of this. I learned it in standard tuning (~1974), using piano sheet music (with guitar chords), & a lot of listening & practice! My son learned it this way & told me it was easier than how I played it (true). Cool to finally actually see it!
Just me, or is anybody else totally anticipating the opening riff of OTHAFA after the final echoing lick of this tune??? Amazing cover/tutorial. Thanks for posting! Would like 100 times if YT would let me.
i never put any effort into trying to figure this whole composition out because it sounded extremely difficult with the crazy tuning and all. Id spent big time effort into my own tunes but apparently this song is so easy. The dynamics of the open strings makes this so much fun to play. Thanks man.
I too am very pleased to know there are still thoughtful and people such as yourself that help the average guitar player as myself, may you and yours be blessed all your days thank you bob
I've been playing that amazing song in standard tuning, which is a lot harder, yet similar but this tutorial is helped me a lot to play it decently. :) Thank you!
I've learned songs from a lot of different youtube videos, but you are probably my favorite. The way you break it down slowly so I can get precise on each section is great. I have learned many songs that I never thought I'd be able to play. I always feel like a beginner no matter how much I learn, but my friends think I'm good.
I just want to add yet another thank you to the list. You break the song down very well and I have really been enjoying being able to play such a great song.
Man, I gotta say that you have the best song tutorials on RUclips! Everything comes out perfectly clear to me, easily understandable as long as you have a basic understanding of guitar. I love it!
Well done Sir! Different tuning really is not different. The notes have always been there. Why stay in one tuning to work harder, make it look like your ego means more than the music. The sweetest sounds are those from the heart. You have produced a wonderful gift! Thank you! j
Absolutely perfect. I never knew the real tuning he used for this - but once I got it from your lesson, it makes COMPLETE sense, and is actually a pretty manageable song to play. This has always been one of my favorite Zeppelin compositions. Fantastic lesson - watched straight through and played along as you went - and within about a half a day of practice, I was able to play full speed along with the original recording, and it sounds perfect. Great stuff - this gets you a subscribe for sure, and I made a donation via your page. Great stuff, you've definitely earned a new customer in me.
AMAZING !!!!! You're the best acoustic instructor I've ever seen !!! I was absolutely impressed within minutes and I've spentcountless hours with many over 30 plus years of playing... There are soooooooo many that give inaccurate info out there, you're the genuine deal my friend !!! Keep up the great work, I intend to spend quite a bit of time learning here.....
I haven't had much time to check out the rest of your videos yet, but obviously you and I like the same stuff... thanks for sharing these songs in incredible detail and accuracy... do you do any acoustic stuff from Zebra??
Thanks Sherif. I put a huge amount of time and effort into making these videos. I like to keep them free for those that can't afford it, but if you can, please support what I do. Cheers, Andy www.shutupandplay.ca/donate.html
0:350:40 Those chords seem to be missing something...add the index finger on the A string 8 fret. It gives it more of a mysterious tone and I believe that's how Jimmy played it. Awesome vid.
Between the songs you choose, your skill at teaching and talent playing guitar you are hands down my favorite RUclips channel. Thanks for this and all your other videos!
super interesting about the intonation in the RS open tuning. I almost always favor going just a fraction of a cent flat on a lot of open tunings, especially the low strings and especially in a blues context and have been doing that for so long that when I do think my ear is wanting a slightly sharper sound that something must be out of whack with the overall intonation of the guitar I happen to be using. This song was one of those cases where I felt sharpening the DG&B strings gave them just a bit more of the sparkle ....or just closer to the sonics I hear in the original recordings (which can be so variable). I always assumed that this was some sort of flaw in my ear, a tic unique to me that I needed to overcome. How I wished youtube was around when I was 16! Then again, I do believe that youtube is going to encourage a new generation of musicians that don't get the level of ear training most of us got, not by conciously trying to practice ear training, but by having no other way of learning songs than by playing to a stack of vinyl, tapes and CDs. There was no ability to slow tracks down as there is here on yt and in a lot of software, no ability to study the fingers of the musician on a video....you just had your ears. well....guess I kinda went on a tangent. I believe I just meant to say, thank you for the very insightful content. The quality of your lessons run so deep, they are worth reviewing even if you think you know how to play the material being covered...always some really great insight and ah-ha moments. So, thank you.
It is a simple open G tuning with 1 difference; the B string is turned up to C. As if Keith Richards already added his sus4. Once again, very well played and explained.
What kind of a person would invoke `copyright infringement` on a guitar tutorial? This is high praise for the music, and absolute zero loss of revenue.
Awesome version man. I knew this song years ago and just started playing again. I remembered most of it but forgot some parts. Watching this filled in all the blanks. Well done!
You're so right about Jimmy Page being a genius. After all he had created before you wouldn't think he would be able to come up with another wonderful piece of art. Mind blowing!
Not the snazziest of tutorials on this song, but by far the best. A multi perspective lesson that I found I could really work with. With a little background info thrown in.. Nice one, I am now a fan..suscribed! ✌😎
I'm finally getting back to this song, and though I'm actually using three different tutorials to learn it, yours is still impeccable & the most beautiful of all of them. I was letting the tuning kick my ass and yet looking at it now, it isn't as difficult as it first appeared, the tuning that is, and I'm able to tune it more quickly. That said, the song might not be as diffucult either and it's a really beautiful song to learn & play. I thank the ensorship gods that they haven't muted it yet. It's not your fault that you can play better than Page. :)
Outstanding Lesson! I have played it in standard tuning and open tuning, and I might add that Zeppelin played this in the key of A live, as on "The song remains the same" CD I had the pleasure of seeing them live twice, had tickets to the concert when John Bonham died!
In my opinion this has to be one of the most beautiful guitar pieces ever. It's magically beautiful.
yep. thank christ its not overplayed on the radio.
for a rock band or any other
It’s magically delicious 😋
Not just the guitar, everything.
Your opinion would be correct sir...
There will never be song's like this written ever again.
We're lucky to have experienced Led Zepplin.
You don't know that.
I don't believe that but I LOVE this song......and they were an INCREDIBLE band! Which goes without saying but I'll say it again anyway!
@@Cactusfruitsquisher Ask yourself - How many bands were like Led Zeppelin before they came along and you'll have your answer for the future...

Andy, I never imagined I would ever be able to play one my all time favorite songs. Thank You...donation sent. Live long and prosper my friend.
One of my favorite songs for driving or relaxing. This is making me pick up my guitar for the first time in over 7 months!
i never put any effort into trying to figure this whole composition out because it sounded extremely difficult with the crazy tuning and all.
Robert Eyler Thanks Robert.
Nice, I'm getting it , I always wanted to play this thanks.
The best Ran Song tutorial I’ve seen! Others never show the middle section. Fantastic pacing on it as well. Thank you!
Came here to learn, and ended up putting my guitar down and just watching in complete awe and appreciation.. this is brilliantly done. Bravo.
I love it!
***** Thanks Chase.
Well done Sir! Different tuning really is not different. The notes have always been there. Why stay in one tuning to work harder, make it look like your ego means more than the music.
The sweetest sounds are those from the heart.
You have produced a wonderful gift!
Thank you!

One of the best songs ever.
+Horizon2142 Thanks for the nice comment bro! I have a lot of respect for all of this music so I try to get the parts as close as I can. cheers
I haven't had much time to check out the rest of your videos yet, but obviously you and I like the same stuff... thanks for sharing these songs in incredible detail and accuracy...
do you do any acoustic stuff from Zebra??
Brings me back to high school listening to Zeppelin songs.
I have to say that you are a very good guitar player. Not very often you hear a guy sound so good in a lesson.... 🤙
Wow thanks so much I’m not a great player but I’m thoroughly enjoying gettin into this should keep me busy for a whil getting it to sound smooth!
That was awesome bro. Could never have thought I could actually play this ingenious masterpiece! Thank You 😍
Thanks Sherif. I put a huge amount of time and effort into making these videos. I like to keep them free for those that can't afford it, but if you can, please support what I do. Cheers, Andy www.shutupandplay.ca/donate.html
Shutup & Play - Guitar Tutorials Done!
0:35 0:40 Those chords seem to be missing something...add the index finger on the A string 8 fret. It gives it more of a mysterious tone and I believe that's how Jimmy played it. Awesome vid.
I agree, it feels very natural to drop the index finger on the A string 8th.
@@petepetesdesk889 On the 'outro' he also gets ONE note wrong(not mistakingly)but otherwise absolutely superb
I`m glad I am not the only one who caught this.
@@busking6292 what note?
thank you for this, in my heart, one of the most beautiful songs ever written
Between the songs you choose, your skill at teaching and talent playing guitar you are hands down my favorite RUclips channel. Thanks for this and all your other videos!
drbenjamin1 Thanks bud. I appreciate you leaving such a positive comment. cheers
You teach better than most teachers. Kudos to you brother you've taught me so much. Owe a lot of my process to your channel. Cheers man
AMAZING TUTORIAL THANKS MAN!!!
super interesting about the intonation in the RS open tuning.
Probably the best Led Zep tutorials out there.
My placeholder 😊
19:08

Best Zeppelin tutorials on RUclips.
It is a simple open G tuning with 1 difference; the B string is turned up to C. As if Keith Richards already added his sus4.
Once again, very well played and explained.
you sent chills up my spine, and I got misty eyed. bravo!
Well done!
HipsterDoofus100 Thank you, glad it helped.
I love this guy! He is a great teacher. I use his tutorials all of the time
God this song.. so introspective beautiful. Like a magic journey. Makes my soul happy. Creative genius yes. Thank you.
Once again another wonderful lesson! Beautifully composed and explained. Thank you so much for sharing your gift!!
This guy is the most accurate... the others add thier own ad lib... i learned ALOT from this expert
You are the best on RUclips doing any of these songs so Ty a bunch for your time!!!
Brother that was awesome..thank you..🙏..
You're so right about Jimmy Page being a genius. After all he had created before you wouldn't think he would be able to come up with another wonderful piece of art. Mind blowing!
Man as a competent guitarist that also "cheats" just wanted to commend you on your breakdown of this beautiful song. A very sweet virtual lesson !
Not the snazziest of tutorials on this song, but by far the best.
A multi perspective lesson that I found I could really work with.
With a little background info thrown in..
Nice one, I am now a fan..suscribed! ✌😎
GOT IT!!, I'm so happy you've shown this,it sounds exactly like the record.excellent job my friend 👍✌️
Nice! You're very thorough and more intuitive than most of these I've seen, especially noting the differences between live and studio techniques.
This is great teaching, as I need something to play while memorizing scales and notes thanks man.
Never thought I’d know how to play this. But now I’m playing it. Thanks, Andy.
