I grew up near Santa Cruz and I loved the carousel at the boardwalk. I remember in the early 60s, you threw the rings at the clowns mouth. And one year on my birthday I caught the brass ring!😀
I did volunteer archaeology work at a defunct Amusement park that was in service over 120 years ago. We found the Carousel base and a lot of the brass rings.

I worked in the carnival business most of my adult life. I am now 60 years old. I think over time merry go round became something of a slang term. I'm not saying I'm a hundred percent right, but I have worked with several carousels in my life. Thanks for sharing your trip. In Sicily I rode a carrousel that all the horses where amazing very beautiful with real tail and mane hair. Mirrors glitter the works. They was huge. Most beautiful I ever seen.

Good morning Jacob, thank you for the video! I love that you said Daytona, Ohio, instead of Dayton, Ohio. Lol I am from there. Born & raise from Dayton area. That is at Carillon Park. At Christmas time they have a big Christmas tree. That is very popular. But now live in Florida. Where Daytona Florida is.
Hi there Jacob I hope you are keeping well...Very interesting to find out more about the history of the Carousel. Still my no 1 and the only ride I can get my mum on bless...XXX
My favorite carousel will always be the one in the New York State museum in Albany NY. My mom used to bring me there all the time and it’s still my favorite museum to visit now and then. Thanks Jacob you’re amazing!
That was a classic statement, once again Jacob!!! Everyone loves to ride horses but sometimes you just gotta ride a frog!!! A truer words was never said!!! The frogs were awesome!!
Carrousels! Yay😊 ! When I was a kid I used to watch “happy days”. Now my own kids and myself, watch the adventures of the carpetbagger! (True story) it’s where we get our travel ideas from.
Oh! I remember what a doll rack is from yesterday. There was a photo of an old doll rack in the room with the mini kiddie carousel. So, you know the game in which you chuck baseballs at rows of those soft dolls in the shape of a clown or a monkey or something, in attempt to win a prize? Voila! Doll rack!
I LOVE carousels! Having grown up in Santa Cruz and having the wonderful Looff carousel at the Boardwalk, I got spoiled. My favourite horse on that ride was the laughing “stargazer” stallion. I know they’re considered “tame” by most amusement park goers but I see them as interactive art. How often do you get to ride a piece of art? I started collecting carousel art in my teens and at one point wanted to make them and restore them as a career. Unfortunately it wasn’t an easy line of employment to get into during the early ‘80s, we were still very short of the Carousel Art Renaissance. Thank you for this video, it was a real treat!
I was going to go there a couple of times when they'd have their Brass Ring Academy steampunk event, but I never had the chance to attend. I hope they'll have that event again.
I visited the Merry-Go-Round Museum when I worked at Cedar Point back in 2021. Much smaller than this. I had collected a lot coins that fell on the midway during opening and easily dropped a few dollars in coins into a funnel where all donations go.

Two other carousels with brass rings other then you mentioned are the Greenport Carousel on Long Island and the other one you were actual near is Gillian's Wonderland Pier in Ocean City, NJ. The sad thing about that one is they do not always have the ring arm working. When we were there filming it was not going but sitting right next to the carousel.

I wish that I'd been there to tell some of the story to him about the surrounding areas and what other factories were associated with the Carrousel museum, because there are many businesses that worked along with the Carrousel Factory to produce many of the local area attractions as well as nationally.
We have a carousel that is just at our waterfront park. Maybe some carousels listed aren't in theme parks. I find it hard to believe you've missed many theme parks. You seem pretty well travelled. 😁
There’s an old carousel in Binghamton, New York that features scenes from the Twilight Zone painted on it because Binghamton was the birthplace of Rod Serling, The creator of the Twilight Zone. And also near where I live there’s an antique carousel in a former amusement park known as Glen Echo park that has a very interesting history involving half the park being torn down to build a parking lot which eventually collapsed into a giant sinkhole. The carousel remains and still works on occasion but now the place is mostly a community area and art commune or something wit galleries, a community theatre, the old ballroom, several little displays and signs talking about the park’s history including one that’s hidden away near the parking lot that covers the collapse, and a few abandoned spaces. You might like it. It’s in Maryland, not too far from Washington DC
Carrousels spin counter clockwise. Merry-go-rounds spin clockwise. Its to keep your right hand on the outside to joust, or to grab the brass ring. The ones with other animals are called menageries. There are six Herschell Carrousels dotted around Broome County, NY (Binghamton area) that are all free to ride, thanks to local industrialist George F. Johnson, who bought them for the enjoyment of his employees at Endicott-Johnson shoe manufacturing. Some are now over 100 years old.
There’s a full-size merry-go-round at the Valley Hills Mall in Hickory, NC, and the The Mall in Columbia, SC. Not all are in exciting amusement park locations 😄!
Knoebels Grove in Elysburg Pennsylvania has an old carousel that has a ring puller (you toss the rings in a lion's mouth) and an extremely loud organ that features wood carved topless mermaids
I have a hunch that the doll racks were the cats, clowns etc in a row that you threw balls at to knock them down to win a prize. I lived near a plexiglass company that had great scraps of plexiglass in their dumpster. We took it home and with special glue built many interesting things.
I grew up during the 1970's so I remember visiting Crystal Beach Park many times before it went out of business, closed up and everything having to do with it was auctioned off in 1989. Some fun stuff: 1. Crystal Beach is still there (obviously.) It was so named because the sand there has a lot of silica in it, which makes it sparkle in the sun. Condominiums now inhabit the former amusement park site. 2. The park had a "Laff in the Dark" dark ride, accompanied by an animatronic "Laughing Sal." I don't know where she is now. Anyone..? 3. Sweet treats from the Crystal Beach era that can still be purchased in Western New York include sugar waffles (a pinwheel shape made of thin and crispy fried dough), loganberry drink (wear purple while drinking it in case someone jostles you) and Hall's Crystal beach suckers, still available in their original flavors of cinnamon, coconut, peanut, lemon and butterscotch. (The nut flavors really have coconut and peanut bits imbedded in the candy. Eat those gingerly or you risk slicing up the corners of your mouth.) After the closing of the park, other fruit flavors were added, including...Taa daaa! Loganberry! 4. The park had a magnificent menagerie carousel. The horses were auctioned off piecemeal in the last years before the closing of the park in an attempt to keep the rest of the park financially afloat. Makes me sad. Almost as sad as...oh, never mind.
@@rf3495 I heard that, too, Six Flags owns that park now. I have seen documantary films in which WNY'ers who remember it like to go and ride it again. I have no idea whether or not that big dip is still parallel with a body of water but if it isn't, it loses a lot of its effect, don't you think?
👍👍👍👍👍👍 Yes, a carousel has horses and a carousel is for amusement parks. A merry-go-round is for a traveling carnival. This what I have heard, concerning the difference between a carousel and a merry-go-round.
A striking machine is like the Test Your Strength machine where you strike the block n the bell goes up n rings if you hit the top!!! A merry go round is the round metal ride at the park when we were kids. I am pretty sure of these things!!
I saw multiple carousels with a variety of animals from across the globe on them in my time. They're most common at zoos (if you find one with a unit, that is) One I went on when I first visited a zoo I've never been to before was one of these examples, but the one animal that stood out from the rest was a dinosaur (no joke), so ofc I picked that one; I felt like I was riding a Yoshi lol quite the unique experience. Another strange but unique piece was a double-decker unit at a mall, which made a reason for me to wanna go, but then I found out it's since been removed and I was crushed. There's also the art of kiddie carousels, another rabbithole worth delving into. From ones at mini play areas at stores and malls to the local arcade, you can't go wrong with these tame and whimsical works.
You should checkout Stricker’s Grove in Hamilton Ohio. I always went for the Fourth of July as a child. I think it’s rather crowded now, but it still has all of the original rides and games.
There is a carousel on Nantasket beach boardwalk in Hull, Ma, used to belong to the now defunct Paragon Park, carousel is all that’s left plus a little museum
Good morning Jacob, I looked it up because I had to know...According to Merriam Webster dictionaries, the word Carousel is actually a synonym of the word Merry-go-Round, so there's officially no difference between the two funfair rides! Have a good day, and thanks for your videos!
On the carousel I rode as a child at Kennywood Park in Duquesne Pa., the horses had real tails, and leather reins and even real saddles with stirrups on leather straps. It was as close to really riding as a kid could get. Actually much better (faster) than the real ponies.
Merry-go-rounds typically have a platform in the center for riders to stand on, while carousels have seats for riders to sit in. Merry-go-rounds also typically have only one row of animals, while carousels have multiple rows of animals. Finally, merry-go-rounds spin around clockwise, while carousels spin around counterclockwise

Good morning Jacob, this is so cool. My kids love carousel 🎠. Ty for the great vids, different places you show us & all the content. You're amazing ❤
Knoebels Grove in Elysburg Pennsylvania has an old carousel that has a ring puller (you toss the rings in a lion's mouth) and an extremely loud organ that features wood carved topless mermaids
Hope you have a beautiful day CB!
Some fun stuff:
Thanks for sharing 🌺☺
I think the "Comet" roller coaster was dismantled and moved to somewhere near Lake George NY.
@@maryblaufuss7533 Agreed
@@rf3495Yes, "The Great Escape" is where it currently resides.
Very nice well planned museum, I’m impressed 🎠🐸🎠🐸have worked in similar work settings but none so interesting 😽✨💫
Carousels and ferris wheels are my favorites
You should checkout Stricker’s Grove in Hamilton Ohio. I always went for the Fourth of July as a child. I think it’s rather crowded now, but it still has all of the original rides and games.
There is a carousel on Nantasket beach boardwalk in Hull, Ma, used to belong to the now defunct Paragon Park, carousel is all that’s left plus a little museum
Sometimes you just have to ride a frog! 😂 🐸
Or a bag of dog food woo- hoo . . .😊
The carousel in Balboa Park in San Diego has an operating brass ring machine.
Do they still have one at Sea Port village?
@@susanfaulkner2304 I think so! Beautiful old carousel, but no brass rings.
Good morning Jacob, I looked it up because I had to know...According to Merriam Webster dictionaries, the word Carousel is actually a synonym of the word Merry-go-Round, so there's officially no difference between the two funfair rides! Have a good day, and thanks for your videos!
Those are so beautiful!
On the carousel I rode as a child at Kennywood Park in Duquesne Pa., the horses had real tails, and leather reins and even real saddles with stirrups on leather straps. It was as close to really riding as a kid could get. Actually much better (faster) than the real ponies.
You know, there were some that would have real horse hair for tails. Such memories . . .
I posted this on my channel a while ago, but it hasn't gotten many views because I'm just starting out. Glad you were in town again to see it and share it.
This is 1 minute down the road from me! I woulda loved to say hi. Glad you got to see the attraction and enjoy it thou! People around here don’t appreciate it as much as they should.. Have a wonderful day
Absolutely loved that vlog Jacob Thankyou xx
Great video! The Gesa Carousel of Dreams in Kennewick, WA is one of the few that has the ring game (brass ring). It is a new/old carousel- the frame was made in 2014 by the now defunct Carousel Works. It's populated by mostly antique Charles Carmel and Illions horses and chariots, plus a few new carved animals. I used to be one of the operators, and filling the ring arm was one of my duties.
Hey Jacob.. There is a fantastic carousel in my home town, Pueblo Colorado. Hey, the Colorado state fair is there also. Knock that one off of your list?? Thanks for the fun video!!❤❤❤
