That's not satire, that's Tom Waits. His songs are often a look at the dark underbelly of society. The characters is his songs are pimps, hookers, winos, gamblers, thieves, the working poor and folks just down on their luck. Yes, there can be humor in his lyrics, but it's a dark humor. The man is a brilliant songwriter and his performances are sometimes more like performance art. His songs range from soft ballads (sung as only he can) to a wild cacophony of sounds and shouting. And everything in between. You may be surprised by some of his songs covered by others that you may be familiar with.
Oh wow lol
@@MaddyReactions I want to second everything neildonley said, and add a bit. No, he does not have these problems. He is, still, a family man who works till 5 and goes home to his wife of many years and his kids--and he keeps ALL the details very private. He is an artist, of song, of voice, of performance, of song. You think this is something--this ain't nothing (wonderfully bizarre as it is, and believe me, it is) compared to what he became after this, after meeting his wife Kathleen Brennan, who became his collaborator for the rest of his life. Listen to Rain Dogs, Frank's Wild Years, and (to me) his masterpiece, Bone Machine. He rarely puts filler material on these albums (and so many more after those). This voice in this song? It is a mere hint of what was to come (and again, this does not take away from the brilliance of this time and performance). But I have heard this song, maybe since it came out, hundreds of times and now it has been many years since I have heard it. It STILL just blows me away.
The heck is a bone machine anyway? Googled to no avail. I thought it was just something funny sounding The Pixies made up. :D
Tom Waits sings about the forgotten, the downtrodden, the unlucky, the has-beens, the never-weres, and the never-will-bes. The lyrics are most interesting - they sound funny at first but then at the end the audience gets a kick in the guts. The main character has not turned her life around; she's living in a fantasy and then has to return to the bitter reality of her life.
Tom Waits isn't for everybody. I'm glad that you decided to give him a listen. His songs have been covered by other people and they've become popular, somewhat popular, at least.
Tom Waits is one of a kind. So many artists credit him for the way the write songs. There is no one like Tom. One of the best songwriters and story teller on all time.
It is said that every time Tom Waits sit's down at the piano, an Angel opens up a bottle of bourbon. He tends to write songs about people who the world has stepped on, or forgotten, and yet somehow they still have ability to hang onto a sliver of hope. This is not a song that I would play for a first time listening to Tom's music. He has many amazing songs that reach out and speak to people in places in their mind where conversations are rare. "I hope you don't fall in love with me", "Martha", "Romeo is Bleeding", "If I have to go", "Take it with me", or even his cover of "Somewhere" from West Side Story will all show you a side of the world and maybe even a side of yourself that you may have never seen before.
Tom is more than a singer. He is a performer acting out each character.
Tom Waits: a treasure. One of the most loved and covered artists.
Tom Waits is a performance artist. He's played a middle-aged drunkard since he was practically a teenager. He's had a long career, which included acting opposite Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep. He's 74 years old and still going strong.
He also acted together with Roberto Benigni and John Lurie in " Down by low " a black and white movie by Jim Jarmusch. I remember one line from that : It's a sad and wonderful world, a statement that applies to many of his wonderful songs .
Tom Waits is a story teller. Who finds his inspiration everywhere, including the dark and broken parts of life. Every life's story is a story worth telling.
There's no one like Tom Waits. He's got a million songs and every one hits in a special way.
Wonderful Tom Waits. What a storyteller...Great man...poet...actor...songwriter...Thank you. Cheers from a finn in Sweden.
When dealing with genius just let it be. One of the most original. Brilliant
One of America's greatest songwriters and a true, true artist. Definitely not satirical but I will say that I would never have picked this song as your introduction to Tom. He has different phases, I guess you'd call them, in his career and many people find his earlier work more palatable, but he's a troubadour at heart and a legend. A few strong suggestions are "Heart of Saturday Night", "Grapefruit Moon", "Little Trip to Heaven (OnThe Wings of Your Love)", "Downtown Train", and my favorite love song of all time, "Johnsburg, Illinois". But he's got hundreds of tracks and some absolutely amazing songs so there are so many more gems in his discography.
This is Tom Waits. You should listen to Waltzing Matilda next
"I don't know if Tom Waits is still around, but if he is, I hope that he gets help." Tom is 74 years old now. He has been recording since the very early 70s. After perfecting his 'beatnik' persona, he shifted into an apocolyptic angel, winning a Grammy for 'Bone Machine'. I don't think he is really quite the artist for you, and may best be approached in small doses. However, you spotted the 'almost' comedic over-the-topness of this song. Some songs are actually quite funny ala 'The Piano has Been Drinking (Not Me)" He is well known for his songs about the down and out, actually somewhat depressing. But the persona has made him into a quite wealthy man. Gotta love him, his lyrics are sheer poetry.
Tom Waits's song Invitation to the Blues is one of the best storytelling songs. Anyone who has lived down on their luck, or just not yet pulled themselves out of poverty, will relate.
Tom Waits and Elvis Costello are the best song writers in the last 30+ years. They don't write satirically, just write based on the good and bad of life wherever we all wind up.
He mixes some humor with interesting storytelling, it is its own thing.
The Piano Has Been Drinking...
Tom Waits is now 74 years old. He is one of the greatest artists of the last century and this century. He is an extraordinary storyteller. He has never been included in any mainstream. He created his own music with his sincerity and originality. He is not only the singer of the dark corners we sometimes get stuck in, he is also the person who shouts the harshest truths on social/universal issues. His catalog is like an ocean. I would like to recommend another one of his works to you, but it would be unfair to others. However, I would like you to listen to 'Innocent When You Dream', the theme song of the movie 'Smoke', a Paul Auster adaptation (co-directed by Paul Auster and Wayne Wang) in which Harvey Keitel and William Hurt excel with their extraordinary acting. With deep respect to one of the last great living poets...
Some of my favorites, I'd also recommend she see Down by Law to understand the man.
"Hell Broke Luce" is amazing.
An anti war song about a us marine with PTSD who sadly committed suicide.
TOm is VERY much still around though he doesn't perform live anymore. he does appear in movies - 7 Psychopaths, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs to name his most recent outings.
Listening to such older Waits songs are like taking the back exit from a dive joint, and after a couple drunken turns down the dark alley, realizing you've walked into a time tunnel, and the sheen on the walls and pavement are layers of nostalgia for regrets, lost chances and lost love affairs. At first his lyrics and interviews seem contrived, until you start to see his mind is a visual poetry factory, he can't turn off, only tease into useful channels.
After a cross-country road trip in my Honda, during which my girlfriend and I broke up, halfway to California, I sat alone in the car listening to "Tom Traubert's Blues," and the pain somehow became tolerable.
I think Tom is a treasure. He is one of my favorites. He tells some of the saddest stories through his songs, but he can also be silly and goofy. He is best known though for walking on that seedier side of life and bringing those tales to light with his music. Thanks for sharing this one, Maddy. 🙂
You are spot on. This is satire. Waits is a really funny guy and one of the best performers. The recorded version has him singing the song without adding the _Silent Night_ stuff. He is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame without ever scoring a high-charting hit. He has a many styles of songs and the spoken word.
I feel bad listening to Tom Waits without a strong drink in my hand.
quite simply THE greatest lyricist of all-time, NO ONE tells a story like Tom. i was lucky enough to have seen his last ever gig, which he played in Dublin in 2008... absolute LEGEND 😎🤘
Respect & Peace ☘
Glitter and Doom baby. I was at that gig. Stunning
@@germcdunphy4566 indeed
Whoa! I haven’t listened to Tom Waits since the late 60s early 70s. Thanks for playing.
Legend! Blue Valentine was always in my "what 10 albums would you take to an desert island" list, ever since first time i heard it. He played nearly all instruments on it. Favorite: $29 (check it out)
Just a vignette, a snapshot of a life for your perusal; it's a well dressed appeal, a soft hustle from a perennial looser for some funds.
He maintains a sweetly sardonic sense of humor.
Waits paints pictographs. He is a Beat-era poet in more modern times, and he's a serious balladeer.
You might check out this piece from, i think, his Blue Valentines album.
Tom Waits has way higher respects than you might guess from within the music community.
Allow yourself the enrichment you'll find in a deep dive - you'll become a fan. Maybe ease in on his earlier, less gruff sounding material. As musical tastes go, he ain't a bad guy once you get to know him.
This brings me to tears every time. It's funny, it's sweet, it is beautiful. I love it so much.
As an actor, Tom Waits has been in over a hundred movies. His first was "Down By Law". Many famous singers( Springstein,Rod Stewart, etc.) Have had big hits with Waits' music. If this one is of no interest to you, keep listening, you will find many.
Tom weights is a terrific poet and storyteller. He's very accomplished on thello and the guitar. The first time I ever heard or saw him was when I went to a bunny rate concert. He opened for her and he just had the audience mesmerized. He's really nice to listen to when you're in a funk. He tells wonderful stories most of them have a lot of humor in them he's pretty descriptive and he's been around.
The first time I saw him during The Frank's Wild Year tour, he did this for the encore after The Piano's Been Drinking.
The look of sheer horror on Maddy's face. LMAO
😂
Very few people can use words to paint a picture in the way Tom does. A master wordsmith and a master musician.
"Using parking meters as walking sticks." Who else could paint a picture like that?
I thought Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer was a strange song title, until I saw this 😂😂
😂😂😂
This song paints a bleak Xmas picture that could be the other side of Fairytale of New York. Written by two brilliant singer/song writers.
I love this song, it's soooo layered. He's one of the best storytellers aound. His Downtown Train video is fantastic, and well worth a look.
Must have been in the mid 1990s I listen to my first record from Tom Waits (Nighthawk at the Diner). Immediately hooked. Saw him in Amsterdam not even so long ago. Anyways, have a great day Maddy & cheers from the Low Countries !
This happens to be the second song on my Holiday playlist (the studio version doesn’t have Silent Night at the start & end)
Big Waits fan for many years! Thank You!
🩷
Maddy,I'll lie for you anytime! This song was amazing😂😜😂
😂😂😂
Worth a deeper dive into his work, I am sure you will come to love it.
Great reaction! Bold move too!
Love this guy! So wish he had done something with Zevon when it was possible.
This is my group's 1st song of 12 days/songs each year.
It is so dear to watch You memorized by the story and delivery!!
Thanks! And GREAT comments from all on the side.
"I would rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy." Tom Waits on drinking while on Fernwood Night.
The first album i ever bought when i moved out on my own was toms swordfish trombones. Then cut to decades later moved to norcal. Tom lives down the street and his kids go to school w my kid and his daughter work's at a friend bar.
Lol life. Its Cool sometimes
I think alotnof people think of Tom as a type of a Clown because it is easier than understanding that Tom is the realist musician you will ever see.
I'm not familiar with Tom Waits' music. He has an extensive history at the age of 74 now. I went back to check out the studio version of this song written in 1978. He doesn't have the Silent Night intro/outro just the hooker story. I swear he sounds like Louis Armstrong and the piano playing was amazing. I'm old enough to connect with that "Little Anthony and the Imperials" lyric in the song "Going out of my head over you". This was really cool.
Love this man
Ha ha..that was my first reaction. I bot a album, played one side and turned it in, used..but I like him better now. He did a funny skit on... Tom Waits The piano has been drinking- live TV. (my wife didn't get the joke and thought it was real :)
Love Tom Waits. Try "The Piano Has Been Drinking". He's an interesting guy.
My all-time favorite!
He in the rock'n roll hall of fame by now, according to himself he needs help to get out
You might enjoy reacting to "Chocolate Jesus," Tom Waits live on Letterman. Truly unusual, even for him.
You should listen to more of Tom Waits music. He has got some very different styles. :)
He hasn't had substance problems for the last 40 years. (This clip is older.) He's happily married and safe by now. And God bless Kathleen Brennan for that.
It took me some time to fully appreciate Tom's music and vocals. I didn't really get into his sound till I was mid 30's really, I'm early 50's now. I know in his earlier days he was inspired by the beat poet and writer Charles Bukowski, who, I'm a great admirer of. I heard Tom wrote this song as a tribute to the style of Bukowski, hence why the lady in the song refers to Charlie. I may be wrong though and if I am, I'm sure someone will correct me.
Oh yes, Tom Waits!
He has a few different faces, and this is one of them. Nit the easiest to start with, I'd say.
To see something in the same vein (stories of the downtrodden) but an actual song rather than - as he introduced it - more of a story, I'd recommend the song "Rain Dogs" from the eponymous album.
To get into more of the dirty blues rock I recommend "Heartattack and Vine".
And to get into his more creepy stuff "Little Drop of Poison" (which you might know from one of the Shrek movies, I don't remember which one), or the full on 'acoustic equivalent of a Tim Burton movie' stuff like "Underground" or "Singapore".
If you look, you will find the genius of the man. As much magician as musician with a window on the world. Not everybody wants to see what's there. And a great actor, fooled you! Try "Heart Attack & Vine" "On The Nickel" or "San Diego Serenade".
He is like a whiskey soaked Springsteen.
Jersey girl!
This is not satire - this is punk.
Good...Lord....
Thank you
Nobody likes Tom waits the first time they hear him. But there is a really good reason why some of the greatest living artists love his work. His concert on Austin City Limits was wonderful.
Imagine you got a letter like that at Christmas time from someone you cared about. Most definitely not comedy.
Unless she is just making up stories to get him to send some money. I suspect hookers do that sometimes.
Tom is unique. A major talent. This is actually one of his more assessible songs. He may not be for you.
As Tom would tell ya...we all have substance issues.
See: God's away on business...business...
There's nothing satirical about Tom Waits, but it's understandable how you can't figure him out from one song. After all, he is in a category by himself.
I've been listening to Waits since the 70s, and still pull out his albums and put them on the turntable. Yes, turntable.
As for his needing help, it's admirable that you're concerned, but he gave up drinking and smoking long ago. He just sings about people who fall through the cracks of polite society.
I’ve shared this with many people and has never hit them like it does me. Goose does a good cover of this as well.
Tom Waits "Downtown Train" is a must, a true gem, and a more mainstream song. You'll love it. Hardly any reaction channel ever does Tom Waits, so big respect for that.
It's a pov shift kinda deal. Tom's great, not a down and out hooker in a cold city.
Always thought of Waits as America’s Leonard Cohen. Often make playlists with those two as well as Iggy Pop (later works).
A better IMO version of this and in fact the whole concert Is his Austin City Limits 1978 show. It is my personal favorite.
“Burma Shave” On The Nickel” from the same show
“Looking for the Heart of Saturday Night”
I Hope I Don’t Fall in Love with You”
Just to name a few.
His David Letterman performances are brilliant as well.
Keep going. Like said below he sings about the downtrodden and brings beauty to the dark.
Interesting song but a strange title for a Christmas song 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
It takes a while to realise that Tom is inhabiting a persona. Nevertheless Tom is sincere in his subject matter. I find this very moving but it took me a long time to ‘get’ Tom. x
Waits is a storyteller and his stories are from the inside of the city - compare and contrast "Silent Night" and the story of real people's lives. He does not have substance issues. Try "I Hope I Don't Fall in Love With You" or "San Diego Serenade", or "The Piano Has Been Drinking."
Unfortunately, in this live performance, he isn't really singing. In the album version, he sings the whole thing. Two songs I'd recommend: "Hold On" (ruclips.net/video/0P5jV4lHHR0/видео.html) and "Downtown Train" (ruclips.net/video/rLtZKkCIVmI/видео.html), which was later covered by Rod Stewart.
Hi Maddy. I think you might enjoy, and be elucidated by, watching Tom Waits induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. He's a character, and not troubled any more than the rest of us.
Beautiful.
One of my favorites.
Love Tom waits, few are better at songwriting, and storytelling.
Very nice
I'm from Minnesota
lol
I have a friend who is a Tom Waits. I still don’t get it.
Here's a similar but really funny and bittersweet blues song that is definitely satire. This is would be great for a reaction. This song is by the Reverend Billy C. Wirtz and is the story of when he went to be on the local kids television clown show when he was little. It's about a tired and angry washed-up television clown that really existed on television in the Washington/Baltimore/Pittsburgh area ... The song is "Cousin Cupcake's Got the Blues" and the better version of the two on youtube is the (audio of a live performance) one, uploaded by the Reverend Billy C. Wirtz and is on youtube at the title ...
"Cousin Cupcake's Got The Blues"
There is only one.
He's very unconventional in the sense like a painter who want to shock or explore other styles outside the mainstream art styles. Think like what abstract paintings did or any extreme style that went against the realism style most people were used to back then. Tom Waits is that kind of painter, but basically uses music as his medium. You either like it or not, same with you either like abstract paintings or not.
Nicely put!
A hopeless comment 🤨
Try "Coffee and cigarettes" movie
Sometimes you have to color outside the lines. Your inner self expression is your reality 🤔. Unique musical thoughts..
Enjoy your Adventures 😉✌️🙏
👍✌️💜
so you liked it?
💔
Here is a must react to !!! Bob James | David Sanborn | Al Jarreau - Since I Fell For You. It's got it all - smooth groove, saxophone and the unique voice of Al Jarreau.
Tom writes the most true and honest songs ever. This is perhaps the deepest rabbit hole out there and the most meaningful experience in popular music. Explore it and you'll become a better person. The farthest thing from satire. This is what life is really like. I'm not sure how you can miss the weight of the songs and the lyrics. Unsubscribing. You missed it entirely.
stick with Tom Waits!!!!!!!!!!
ON THE NICKLE or Blue Valentines -- same era. more lyrical
This is not for you.
What CRAP!! Absolute garbage.
Your reaction was spot on - song didn't do it for me. Not sure I'd want to hear any more from him.
I've never understood the Fandom of his. When Bob Dylan is the better singer you have to question it. Hand down Dylan is the better songwriter as well. I see Tom in the same light as David Allen Coe, it's great if you're stoned or so I've heard.
Go ahead let the hate begin. 😊😁
Forgive me But Thank You for the View😎🫶👍👊🤙🤘
