I remember, years ago when asked "What does American Pie, mean to you?" He answered " To me, it meant I didn't have to work anymore"
yes
Didn't he put a copyright or some kind of patent on American Pie and now if you want to use that you have to pay up
@@jerricroft937 That's how the music community works. If musicians want to be paid for their music now they have to do this. It's not just him. Ask any bar or restaurant that has live music or a jukebox and they have to pay a fee.
Jerri Croft I’m pretty sure all songs have that. You want to sing in the shower fine, but if your singing any song in a public performance you would have to pay the copyright.

Don McLean is so right the decline of the American music system and political system have deteriorated into the toilet
Yep while don was talking i was thinking about how Madonna utterly butchered that song
@@c.blakerockhart1128 I'm pretty sure that applies to both sides of the spectrum. Autotune isn't political by any means

@Terry Daktyl Follow your own advice, Turdy the Troll.
That was quite the compliment he gave you. Well deserved, also. Very cool.

Just to help you out about the songs true meaning" did you write the book of love and do you believe in god above if the bible tells you so" , Mclean is saying this to a hippy of the era who looks like Jesus and spreads the words of love and peace while worshipping the songs and idles of the era.
Look I love American pie, but if ur rlly trying to twist the message to “the dems are evil” than that’s just dumb
@@mldmax-knight8686 I see it more as a hatred of progressivism and anarchist-left political views. The examples go on, but even the chorus proves that. Pies and Chevy vehicles were probably the most memorable things from the 1950s (in which he was saying bye to [hopefully that was obvious enough]). Just my take, but yknow.
“Moutains O’Mourne” by McLean is like no other. Charming, nostalgic, “mournful” and happy, all at once. This artist is pure musical genius.
Written by the irishman Percy French of course . But Don's version is indeed beautiful and its a huge compliment to Percy that a songwriter of Don's talent would chose to do a cover of his song .

One of America's favorite lyricists extends to Tucker a rare interview, in which he offers high praise for Carlson's artful style of engaging those who differ from him, often much to their chagrin!
Thanks, Don McLean, for your kind words, as they extend to all of us like-minded folks, who love even those who differ from themselves, but won't tolerate being violated!

I love songs with a strong contrast between the lyrics and music. American Pie is an upbeat song but the lyrics are crushing.. very well made.
One of the best singer songwriters of this genre, without a doubt, his voice was so smooth and the lyrics were amazing.Vincent is a masterpiece of lyric and his genius comes through in this song.
Thanks for having this guy on your show,he's an American treasure.
Amazing song!!
Arguably the greatest lyricist that ever lived. I still remember sitting with my father in the car listening to Vincent when I was a young boy .. and him telling me to pay attention to the lyrics.
Though American pie is one of my favorite songs I would definitely argue that Bob Dylan is the greatest lyricist With John Fogerty being next, simply because I have never heard a song by either of them that was not top tier as well as innovative… which also led to other musicians to implement their tactics. I would still say that there is no greatest of all time even though that sounds contradictory. The reason I would say this statement is because to say there is a greatest of all time is solely based on opinion and everyone has a different one. There can honestly never be a greatest because each person’s opinion changes daily sometimes even hourly based on one’s mood. One day you may want to hear a certain artist/song while thinking they’re the greatest because you’re receiving a massive dopamine rush and the next day you’re going to think a different artist is the greatest because you just so happen to be in a good mood while listening to them and received a larger dopamine rush. Music is tied in with emotion Which triggers chemical reactions in the brain and causes urges/addictions, and control thoughts.

I have heard other, more literal interpretations of the song before now. Seems to be a song of mixed metaphors with philosophical guide ropes.
It's an interpretive work. You can take it however and wherever you want.
It's a timeline of events as he understood them. It's a brilliant piece of poetry put to music.
I saw an exhaustive analysis here on RUclips of it. It could be wrong of course but it looked at the words in context of the time - and it lines up with what Don said here about politics and music of the time plunging forward into chaos, with some trying to keep it together but ultimately failing or even being killed/dying.
Overall I think the song is an overarching metaphor mourning the loss of innocence, innovation, and recognizing inevitable decline.
One of my favorites. Timeless classic truthful song. Watching America dying right now makes me cry now.

I’ve been a fan of Don McLean since 2009, went on a Beatles shuffle on pandora and I heard American pie. Instant relaxation
Don McLean is an American treasure. I saw him in concert in the 70s. He was a force of nature. He blew away the audience. We just weren’t expecting such a talented performer; playing different instruments and singing with such incredible energy.
American Pie is legendary of course, and deservedly so, but he is so much more with songs like Vincent, Jerusalem and many others that never got the radio play time and recognition they also deserved.
It seems that same kind of suppression was evident even here in this interview which ended so abruptly. I was extremely disappointed he was not given more airtime. I sensed he was just getting started with the insights he wanted to share with us. Perhaps he was at an age where he was ready to open up and share with us his logic and reasoning behind some of the lyrics of American Pie and settle the mysteries of those lines fans have speculated about for five decades.
It seemed Tucker cut him off even before he shared everything he was willing regarding the focal question of this interview; i.e., the meaning of “drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry.”
How sad, particularly given McLean had just expressed his great admiration for Tucker Carlson and his Fox network show, indicating he likely had his TV tuned to Fox News a great deal instead of CNN or MSNBC and the other usual liberal hangouts. Consider just how rare it is for a prominent musician from the sixties and seventies to be on the right side of the political spectrum. Perhaps a genuine old school American libertarian instead of the bastardized, neo-conservative modern variety. Was that the reason his interview was cut short by some anonymous Fox producer?
So a golden opportunity was missed in my opinion. The irony is, some day in the not too distant future, when Don McLean passes on, the network very likely will dedicate more time to his obituary and a retrospective look back at his career and the mystery of the lyrics of American Pie, when on the day of THIS interview, they had the living, breathing version of Don McLean, still in complete control of his mental faculties, primed and willing-perhaps-to settle some of those mysteries, and they muffed their golden opportunity. They drove the “Chevy to the levy and the levy was dry.”
It didn’t have to be.

That's the most I've heard him describe what it means. Through the years he's been very evasive. Especially about the "when the music died" part.
American Pie is a musical summary of the explosive start of American rock. Think of all the earliest rockers, and you'll find them referenced in the song, and in the context of the times (the 50s and 60s).
