  • Time Flies huh!
Seeing as I can't ride yet due to my old man antics now is the perfect time to reflect and react to Danny Macaskill's Inspired April 09 video as this week has been it's 15 year anniversary! Let's see if it still holds up after all this time!
Unfortunately I couldn't find Dave Sowerby's edit I mentioned, if you can find a link please share it in the comments :)
The older Danny edit is here, it's not the original upload sadly and the quality is poor but it's the best I could find :

I just can't bring myself to watch it, that video holds too many good memories of a golden era of my life and riding in general, it was the very video that started it all for me! knowing i'll never have the health / youth to go back to it is something i cannot seem to get my head around 🤕
on a more positive note, that video helped me find Ali, who actually ended up being my main inspiration throughout so many years of riding, back in the "Clean" era when you and Mark used to film together! i still remember being a bit starstruck when i spoke to you on the phone at tarty a couple times, did my best to keep it to myself mind!
it's so cool to be able to follow you and the cute thief on here!

I know man. Time keeps ticking away and when never seem to realize we are in the midst of the best times until they have passed. It feels like there is always tomorrow, until there isn't. Right there with you my man. It is so hard, psychologically to have those doors closed and be powerless to do anything about it. Life is beautiful and brutal and amazing and so capricious. We have to savor what we have as much as possible and make sure we are living in the present. Say Yes to life, in Spite of Everything as Frankl would say.

I would be super interested about how this video did change Inspired Bicycles or if it did at all. Would be amazing if you may interview the folks from Inspired Bicycles about how they started, how things developed over time and how they anicipate how (street)Trials may change... There is probably loads of other cool and tech topics to cover.

Ali thanks for making this video, I'm watching you, I also like to turn the nuts of the bike. I bought my first Magellan Tucana street trial 20 years ago. And at the same time, besides the trial, I got carried away with dirt. Even then I had serious injuries, Danny video made a huge impression on me, and helped me not to give up my career, but on the contrary, I wanted to progress, do something like that. But I have no talent, I perform at 1% out of 100% of Danny. This is my most favorite video. I wish Danny good health. He inspired a lot of people. Ordinary people don't realize how difficult it is, and it's damn difficult.Danny is a brave man and technical, which helped him stay whole, unlike Bender.

My favorite video. As Slim Shady says: “Why being king, when you can be the God?”. What I mean by that, is that Danny and the team behind this video have actually changed my life. This video is one of not so many reasons why I haven’t committed suicide, at the time it came out. Danny and everyone who made this video to come out and reach me as the viewer, have shown me the good example of being strong, being capable of unrealistic but possible to make things, and they have shown the strength of the will in this video so well. Danny looked like the real God to me, laughing at the existence of the word “impossible”, doing impossible things with the smile on his face. I’m still shocked seeing some of the elements he does in this video, and since the video came out, I, unfortunately, didn’t have an opportunity to ride a bike, to practice, and basically I didn’t have ANY bike at all for almost 12 years. Was forced to immigrate with no money. Never mind. So I’m still impressed badly. And my wish to ride that cool, like him, the wish that has formed after I’ve seen this chef d'oeuvre for the first time, is still just a wish. Have to admit I’m very far from my 40ies, so I still have an opportunity to buy myself a street trials bike and ride into my dream and be happy.

Liked the video! I would love to see your take on Charlie rolls. Either the latest London edit or the one in Portsmouth from a couple of years ago (It's a modern classic in my eyes). A very different style and likely doesn't follow the unwritten rules!? but were both filmed in a day. Charlie is very much a rider's rider and possibly unknown outside the trials community, it would be great to show a different side to our sport.
    Cheers!

I used to watch Hans Rey back in the later 80s and 90s. It was super cool to watch and I did trials for a while back then. I had a Haro Response which was a fun bike at the time. My friend had the GT Ricochet and we would go practice on stairs, walls, rocks and such. I also rode BMX back then so it was a perfect combination. Then I thought trials had died off after that. Then this video came out and I was mind blown. It was Trials and Street BMX combined! So cool!!!!

I learned to ride in '79, started doing BMX freestyle in '87 and got into mtb in '89. By the mid 90s, I had stopped riding altogether. In '98 I got a cheap mtb in Iwakuni, Japan, and had a brief resurgence of mtb, which kindled my mid-school BMX revival. That lasted until the planes hit the towers in '01 and I got really busy for a few years and only rode periodically.
I came across this video in April of 2011, and it got me back into mountain biking, (On a BMX bike at the time.) This led to me getting a real mountain bike in 2014, a road bike in 2015, full sus in 2016, and so on...
Still come back to this video every now and then. It is still inspiring.
