I remember going through my dads records in high school and stumbled across Abraxxas in 90s. I remember the moment I heard Samba Pa Ti and it made an impact on me.
Never heard of Santana? It’s almost sacrilege. Anyway it’s not what Santana plays but how he plays it. The incredible feel. No one plays like him. Legend!
"Never heard this song really" - can't believe! This tune is so iconic, it's impossible to grow up without dancing to it cheek to cheek with your first (or second) love!
So insightful! The tempo is absolutely what got played in those 7th grade boy/girl school dances. Additionally the guitar is made to sound like those pre teen jumps you get when your voice is changing ... so embarrassing, so iconic.
Samba Pa Ti - My all-time favorite Santana song. Fairly easy to learn to play, my smile went from ear to ear when I became able to play it. Mastering it, though, is a different story. Yeah, I love Carlos! P.S. Michael makes a point that I've noticed over the years regarding Santana, that the 2nd string melodies are favored heavily by Carlos.
your comments are spot on. As a keys player and lifelong Santana fan this is an iconic tune but to play the second up tempo phase with as much feel and impact is another ball game..it takes time to experiment and enjoy playing around with adding as Carlos does other song themes
No Michael, you have to have heard Samba Pa Ti before! It's one of the great guitar pieces of musical history. He and Knopfler are unique and anyone who plays guitar knows all their best songs.
You need to cover some Peter Green Fleetwood Mac. "Oh Well", "albatross", "Man of the World", "Green Manalishi", "Black Magic Woman". Classic. What great touch he had!
I really love the way you break everything down and make it seem so simple and in some ways it is, but in some ways it's not. It takes a true understanding of theory and and comprehension of music in order to order to truly break down songs and figure out what our favorite Musicians are doing. Thank you for such amazing knowledge and wonderful videos. I hope to know as much as you one day.
Notice the way Carlos handles his pick. It's a big triangle and one point is sticking out between his index and middle fingers - perhaps for added stability? Plus, he holds the pick - at least part of the time - with his thumb and middle finger, rather than his thumb and index finger.
the thing that always amazes me most is the pick work. Kind of like buddy guy, just goes back and forth between fingers and picks and holds the pick different ways. Just blows me away.
You can probably be forgiven for not having heard this since in came out ion "Abraxas" long before you were born...still it is impossible to believe that you have not heard this previously...the sound track to my Junior year in high school.
Carlos can play the blues in a totally delta tone. His first band played the blues. He really can play outside that fingerprint, and very beautifully. But you will have a hard time finding video of it. He gives the people Santana , cause thats what they want. Really enjoy your analysis.
1974. my mother had a big console stereo with an instrument input and headphone output. i'd plug my guitar in and spend many, many, many, did i say many?, hours sitting on the floor learning every nuance of that tune. still one of my favorites. of course this version has evolved from the original.
My two favorite guitarists...Santana and Jerry Garcia, watching you break these down for me is amazing. As a guitar player and not having the skill and knowledge to do it the way you do, this is absolutely amazing and exactly what I have needed for a long time.. thanks.
Carlos and Kramer guitars are a marriage made in heaven, because the aluminum neck beasts sustain for days and sustain has always been a cornerstone of the Santana sound.
Thank you so much for going over this great tune Michael. For me Santana is a one off and the first time I heard that great riff it brought goose bumps, and still does 40 years later. You made so many valid and interesting points which I will use as I continue to try to replicate this beautiful song. In case you did not know, Samba pa ti means a Samba for you. My second favourite song of his is Healer Blues with John Lee Hooker, more incredible playing!
Excellent explanation with notes and theory and respect for individual style of Santana and you pick up the musicality very well Appreciate if you could do Black Magic Woman and Oy Como Va
"Song of the Wind" from the Caravanserai album by Santana would be interesting if you'd like to focus on the lead playing, which is exquisite, over basically two alternating chords.
You are absolutely amazing.. Two minutes and u got it.. Figured out so easy. In my opinion if someone no talented enough to music and ear is not very well, then struggle to do it. Sorry for my English
Saw Santana in Auckland New Zealand ... he was glorious I turned 53 today ... been playing guitar for 35 years ... wish I had a Palmisano RUclips channel to learn from ... By all that’s Dorian ... I’m loving this tonelicious lickery
2019, obviously experienced guitarist, been playing for quite a few years and he's only just heard of Santana? or at least "this" iconic song? wh at rock has he been under?
Another Winner, Delightful episode, Michael Palmisano~!! Really admire and appreciate your very thoughtful and authentic analysis, extremely helpful and enlightening tips and Colorful commentary, Man ! You're a Musical Friend, "Amigo de Musica con passion~! Muchas Gracious/H Lane Howell
Really enjoying these videos. breakdown of he songs is great. If I may request one. Kid Charlemagne Steely Dan. One of my all time favorite guitar solos. Would be interested to see you bisect the chord changes under the guitar solo.
I really enjoy this series; it's great to see someone who understands what they're watch on a more fundamental level than I do react and enjoy stuff. If I may request anything, more live Zappa, particularly with Frank on the guitar. Thanks!
Awesome channel and guitarrist. Carlos Santana was saved by music. He was a heroin adddict in mexico city his birthplace. Music was his way out of the streets and to this day he is clean and a living legend. That is one story right there.
Don’t own a guitar ,don’t know how to play guitar and don’t plan on buying one but dam this video had me stuck from beginning to end for both Santana and your guitar advice 😂
Thanks for uploading, but no one matches Santana's silky latin tones, no matter how much you analyse it. It's art man. It's on another level. Peace. :)
It seems that, since this was released originally in 1970, that the songwriter of "Wishing on a Star" Billie Rae Calvin stole/used that melody Santana played here several times. Pretty much note for note.
Hey Mike! I’ve watched a ton of your RUclips videos and it’s amazing how you’re able to figure out the chords so quickly and is able to tell if it’s the 3rd 4th etc. Do you teach this in your online course?
Hey Mike! How did you getvthe Tone for this video! Humbuckers sound really deep and Juicy! I love it! What amp and what Pedal? If any? Low tone knob setting? 10 Guage strings?
Love the analysis of the players that I have seen you feature here so far ...just wondering if you have already covered any Roy Buchanon who I came across in the seventies when I was first being exposed to interesting players...big fan of your channel and again really appreciate your approach sir...in a word thanks
Great Stuff! I have one question, your action is quite low right? its not just the angle of the video? Ive played most of the time with higher action and am just now switching to lower which obviously is way easier to play :)
I would love to hear you do Roy Buchanan "Fly Night Bird"...it starts ethereal at the beginning and when the guitar kicks it up it feels like he is wrenching your guts out of your body...
You gotta take a look at Billy Strings’ “train train.” He plays pyramid country first and you can really see the connection that he has. Keep up the videos, this is making this quarantine a breeze.
Love the channel - took both your guitar course & cover band course on Udemy, helped A LOT, and still working through some of the non-major scale stuff (harmonic & melodic minor specifically, so would love any song breakdowns that utilize that) - especially love your #learnthesong and this REACTS series - here's a few suggestions from my band's repertoire that I've learned how to play, but always eager to educate myself more on the underlying harmony and note choice... Never Too Much (Luther Vandross) Long Train Running (Doobie Brothers) Smooth (Santana/Rob Thomas) Crazy (Gnarls Barkley) 24k Magic (Bruno Mars) Play That Funky Music (Wild Cherry) Kiss (Prince) Isn’t She Lovely (Stevie Wonder) Also, unrelated to my band, anything by Lettuce, Vulfpeck, Corey Henry & the Funk Apostles or Jacob Collier would be awesome
Michael, I love you because of the course you made, but I will love you even more if in next episode you will react to Jimi Hendrix - Wild Thing at MusicOrama, Paris. Please!! I really enjoy your lessons :)
Greatest make-out song of all time. Remember when it was played at high school dance you just had to find that right girl to dance with. Those were great times!
I remember going through my dads records in high school and stumbled across Abraxxas in 90s. I remember the moment I heard Samba Pa Ti and it made an impact on me.
I have that LP pull it out sometimes, sound better than discs
i guess I am pretty off topic but does anyone know a good site to watch newly released movies online ?
@Darren Aydin Try Flixzone. You can find it on google =)
@Briggs Malcolm Thank you, I went there and it seems like a nice service :) I really appreciate it !!
@Darren Aydin glad I could help xD

Has there ever been a prettier song than Samba Pa Ti? Thank you for reacting to this masterpiece.
No, like a beatiful day on the water with your true love
Michael you are a true Guitar Instructor.
You're a fine player, but this life has picked you to be an instructor.
You're exceptional in that.
Nobody sounds like Carlos - heaven. Can listen to this over and over .. and over
many people can technically copy Carlos.. but no-one can put the emotion into it like Carlos...
Except he ripped off Peter Green.
@@daryllbrownjohn much easier than playing other styles
@@mattt2581your so hurt , so sorry , what’s your beef ? 😁
I’m a blues tragic. Even I can only handle so much blues. Santana is the antidote. So utterly natural. Beautiful. And you nailed it.
Along with this take a look at Europa! And that takes me to Al Dimiola! Anything!
Samba Pa Ti - My all-time favorite Santana song.

Have heard various versions of this but my favorite is still the original version on the album. Really enjoy your videos.

this is my favourite version of samba pa ti. so beautiful
Santana is the best. That man gives me such inspiration for wanting to play this type of music.
Jazz guitarist Ottmar Liebert does a cover of this...with Carlos. Incredible.
You can probably be forgiven for not having heard this since in came out ion "Abraxas" long before you were born...still it is impossible to believe that you have not heard this previously...the sound track to my Junior year in high school.

if you listen to early Peter Green, I would say he took that style, not taking anything away from heim, but I would say that was his influence.
1974. my mother had a big console stereo with an instrument input and headphone output. i'd plug my guitar in and spend many, many, many, did i say many?, hours sitting on the floor learning every nuance of that tune. still one of my favorites. of course this version has evolved from the original.

Thanks Michael. Great breakdown. Great info re Dorian. You are great on the explanations and a very accomplished player. Subscribed.
Carlos and Kramer guitars are a marriage made in heaven, because the aluminum neck beasts sustain for days and sustain has always been a cornerstone of the Santana sound.
That song instills a certain calmness and a feeling of wellbeing like no other song, especially the first 2 minutes
Love the Santana. You have the technique but he has the emotion as well.
100%
I always thought the keyboard player just had his mouth open cause he was really into the song😂 love your videos man, happy to be a new subscriber!✊

Chris Jeneson my pleasure :)
Santana the living legend. You are very good. Thanks.
I heard the tune from his hotel room, a busker from across the street was playing it on a trumpet.
He was using an interesting mix of the pick, the thumb, and fingers, not any one method. I never noticed that before. I enjoyed and subbed thank you.
Excellent lesson! Keep them coming!

Mr. Santana is one of the most recognisable gutar players ever.
I’m hearing this in G Major, rather than A Dorian, with the emphasis on the Major 7th (F#).

"It's gotta be the cat's pyjamas!" Bahaha!
YOU NEED TO REACT TO THE 1989 SANTANA AND JERRY LATINO JAM SESSION. I DIDN'T KNOW IT EVEN EXISTED, GAVE ME GOOSEBUMPS.
Now I don’t feel guilty milking that second string! Mayer does this on a lot of his pop recordings.
If it's good enough for the greats it's good enough for us.
Michael, tell us about the SE Hollowbody II that you are playing. I love that guitar.
It seems that, since this was released originally in 1970, that the songwriter of "Wishing on a Star" Billie Rae Calvin stole/used that melody Santana played here several times.
Pretty much note for note.
that was fun thanks
I saw Santana in concert in 2003. He blew my mind. His opening act,Angelique Kidjo, was quite good also. I was hoping she would be bigger in the U.S.!
Hey Mike! I’ve watched a ton of your RUclips videos and it’s amazing how you’re able to figure out the chords so quickly and is able to tell if it’s the 3rd 4th etc. Do you teach this in your online course?

There’s Santana’s brilliance! Taking something apparently easy and making it sound sublime 👍
I have the name but I never got the talent! So sad!
one of the best songs santana ever made is Revelations its what started me to playing.
Great comment. Absolutely love this track 😎👍
Would love to see you do a demo of that guitar! There are tons of people looking for more info on these new SE hollowbodies

The best version is called 1991 performance. Playing a Tele style guitar
I can’t find it
Great Stuff! I have one question, your action is quite low right? its not just the angle of the video?
Ive played most of the time with higher action and am just now switching to lower which obviously is way easier to play :)
really enjoyable....love your musicianship....have you done a video about Wes? (sorry for being lazy....I'll go check). ;)
That guitar is amazing 😍👌
I would love to hear you do Roy Buchanan "Fly Night Bird"...it starts ethereal at the beginning and when the guitar kicks it up it feels like he is wrenching your guts out of your body...
Michael, you bring the music alive. Thanks for making the theory a living playing thing. With every analysis a little further goes ….
This is a blast to watch

Ain‘t no sunshine (live Crossroads) - John Mayer
I stumbled upon local boys Pigeons at a few festivals.... nice grooves... funky... prs b stock.... scrambled greg
Great stuff. You’d love “It’s Not My Cross to Bear”, from the Allman Bros first album. Duane Allman & Dickie Betts.
Keep these coming. They're the cat's pajamas.
Do Flame Sky with Santana and John McLaughlin
I have a suggestion for you... Little Martha, Allman Brothers. So incredible. One of the best all guitar tracks in existance.
this guy is freaking brilliant
Neil schon and gregg Rollie, the guys who formed journey, started their careers playing in santana.
wich pick up are You using. and what level is your por. is that the neck or bridge pick up???
Do yourself a favor and check out the version from the live 1974 Lotus album. That period was Carlos at the height of his powers.
You gotta take a look at Billy Strings’ “train train.” He plays pyramid country first and you can really see the connection that he has. Keep up the videos, this is making this quarantine a breeze.
The studio version, for the album "Abraxas" is the best IMHO. It has fewer ad libs. Its the one in the CD player in my car - on auto-repeat.
luv it ! suggestion : J.J. Cale stuff
This guitar is beautiful. Have you already made a video showing all your guitars?
Would love to see that😊
Love the channel - took both your guitar course & cover band course on Udemy, helped A LOT, and still working through some of the non-major scale stuff (harmonic & melodic minor specifically, so would love any song breakdowns that utilize that) - especially love your #learnthesong and this REACTS series - here's a few suggestions from my band's repertoire that I've learned how to play, but always eager to educate myself more on the underlying harmony and note choice...

Smooth (Santana/Rob Thomas)
Crazy (Gnarls Barkley)
24k Magic (Bruno Mars)
Play That Funky Music (Wild Cherry)
Kiss (Prince)
Isn’t She Lovely (Stevie Wonder)
Also, unrelated to my band, anything by Lettuce, Vulfpeck, Corey Henry & the Funk Apostles or Jacob Collier would be awesome
in case you don't know; he did one on Jimmy Herring recently and broke down the M/m thang. ruclips.net/video/Q9dXlyV5_YI/видео.html
Michael, I love you because of the course you made, but I will love you even more if in next episode you will react to Jimi Hendrix - Wild Thing at MusicOrama, Paris. Please!! I really enjoy your lessons :)
Hey man,you condense a wealth of musical knowledge, with considerable clarity, cheers.
Can u have a crack @ Honkytonk Night Time man (Lynyrd Skynrd)
Never thought much of him til I heard this song. Only liked stuff of his like Oye Como Va, Evil Ways.
Greatest make-out song of all time. Remember when it was played at high school dance you just had to find that right girl to dance with. Those were great times!
Santana had that audience in the palm of his hand. Did you hear that silence when he held that d note?
