      It has to be said that the money they must be making per set has to phenomenal, especially as they are unique amongst big toy companies with how much is sold direct to consumers via their website and stores.

      Yep - they are an incredible money-making machine. Like I said once you get so many sales direct to consumer (D2C) your profit margins can be so high as you cut out the middle man (the retailers). Made so much money in the past decade they were able to buy the company who bought their theme parks off them 20 years ago. So now they don't just own the Legolands but also a load of other big theme parks too!

      I don't think this will hurt them too much financially tbh but it does feel a little needless to hurt a small, dedicated corner of the community. I'm not a BDP submitter but I'd be crushed if I'd worked on a modular design for a long period and then had this news...

    Wow. Lego declares war on Modulars? They release but one modular building a year so what is the objection? I hope these designers flock to Rebrickable and collaborate with alternative brands for those of us modular lovers.

    • @BasedPlateReviews
      @BasedPlateReviews  2 месяца назад +3

      I think some of the BDP designers do sell their designs on Rebrickable (that's allowed in the rules) but those submitting to LEGO Ideas really are wasting their time it seems - like I say there are so many modular designs submitted and LEGO don't explicitly ban them but they definitely also don't select them as winners so may as well do

      @@BasedPlateReviews The problem isn't just that people are wasting their time submitting modulars to Ideas, it's that many are using it as a way to get free lego since well-developed modular ideas easily get 10k supporters. I hate the "professional" lego ideas submitters who only do modular designs or other frequently-rejected subjects like castle because they know what will happen

    • @BasedPlateReviews

      Wow - is that a thing? When you get 10k supporters you get some free LEGO etc? I know that when you hit that mark you get 'considered' for review but hadn't heard there were extra benefits - or do you mean that it's kind of a way of them getting bigger social media following etc. so they get to be 'LEGO influencers'? And I can’t even afford to buy the pieces to build them… really upset by that decision. Could be with the Modular’s to avoid any potential legal trouble of seeing to be copying a bricklink design. Or just competing with official LEGO sets. I’ve noticed occasional complaints about ideas or bricklink submissions being turned down then Lego themselves releasing a set with the same theme. They’ll have been in the works for years I expect but it won’t stop people accusing of stealing ideas. It’s a shame because there are wonderful Modular’s submitted through these programmes.
    I think also with the Modular collecting it’s helpful to not have ultra rare exclusive ones that you only get a limited window to buy.

    • @BasedPlateReviews

      I think they are good points. The Snow White cottage was definitely one that some fan designers were annoyed about as it had been well-received on LEGO Ideas and then LEGO released their own under the Disney theme (like you say it'll have been in the works for years). I actually do think that they don't want to upset regular modular collectors precisely because of what you say - these are super limited sets often bought just for the purpose of reselling at inflated prices. It's great for the people that get them but completionists could really feel unhappy if they don't.

    Call your gas station a liquid nitrogen station.
    I get not using the term modular if that's something Lego want to keep for their modular sets, but wanting submissions on a 32x32 plate with connectors seems unnecessary.
    As for ambiguous fuels for vehicles which are not electric, that's fine but if you're making a real world car or style of car you may want to make the engine and show the exhaust pipes but I guess if you don't say it's gas/petrol powered does that count as being ambiguous? Even though we all know a Ferrari F40 is gas/petrol powered

      I think that whilst LNG might not be in the ban (not a fossil fuel) I think they'd still not want it as it's not a renewable (just cleaner). The modulars issue is annoying for people that have been preparing designs for a while but I suppose LEGO can choose whatever rules they wish - not great but there probably were too many modular submissions in the program.

    • @BasedPlateReviews
      @BasedPlateReviews  2 месяца назад +3

      I think that's a real possibility for a reason behind the changes - I think that as they continue to have such high prices it's inevitable some people (even very loyal customers) at least begin to look at cheaper alternatives. Great point!

      It's sad to hear - I actually think it's the kids who are being priced out the most. How, if I had children, could I justify the crazy amounts for actual sets? You could say just get the boxes of bricks but the worry would be it would encourage them to want sets and they often are just too much money. The recent Lord of the Rings sets are the ones that really get to me - Barad Dur and Rivendell are excellent but where are the reasonably priced LOTR sets outside of BrickHeadz (spelt with a Z - my days)?

    • @sandra1620-ni
      @sandra1620-ni 2 месяца назад +4

      @BasedPlateReviews There are very few items that are reasonably priced now. I know quite a few parents who don't want to buy their kids a Lego set just in case they want more. The Friends and City sets are becoming unreachable for a lot of parents. It's really sad. I know how I'd have felt as a child if I was told I couldn't have any more Lego! Maybe instead of Lego spending their profits on court cases, they should concentrate on producing more affordable products before they're priced out of the market. After 40+ years of building and collecting Lego, I'd hate to see it fall apart. But in the meantime, I'll continue to buy those sets that catch my eye 😆

      I’d say you’re fairly on the nose. I’m a huge castle fan/collector, but where are the days of a small battle pack, Polly bag, or even a less than $100 set!? It really boggles my mind that they aren’t bringing back some of the nostalgic smaller sets to capitalize on the sells of the Lion Knight’s Castle, the creator 3-1, the Viking Village, the Blacksmith, the Medieval Town Square, and BDP Mountain Castle. All of those sets are over the $100 mark and make it unobtainable for so many.

    I get reducing plastic bags, but Lego itself is the pinnacle of reusable plastic. Plastic in itself is not a bad thing, it's when it's cheaply produced into things that are single-use or that break quickly and serve no other purpose. Lego pieces can be used nearly infinitely for decades.

      All the more power to MOCs and custom designs. This community has grown in recent years and it's awesome how the newer generations are embracing both set collections and custom builds like never before.
      LEGO will do what they want (or are pressured to) but eventually the 'political correctness' agenda will wither and dissipate as it is counterproductive and unsustainable. Maybe the AFOLs and other fans need to see this kind of behavior and respond with even more MOCs and designs.
      Ironically, their products will outlive the company and current managerial heads, as will the community that continues to play with them.

    I am definitely against them taking modulars out, but after the webinar, I think I understand where they are coming from. They cited not wanting people to be confused, and I understand that, even if I don't fully agree. They didn't explain it super well, IMO, but I think they don't want modular collector "completionists" to feel like they missed out on a modular because they didn't know about the BDP when the crowdfunding happened, or they couldn't afford to drop the money in the first hour of hte crowdfunding.
    I'm not happy with the change, but I think I understand it better.

      Yeah I think you've got it about right - definitely it has made some modular completionists upset if they can't also get the tough to secure BDP ones. I think one of the issues isn't that there are tons of submissions overall but that they tend to dominate the voting i.e. they're popular. I feel bad for one RUclipsr who's been producing videos on the BDP modulars and had planned videos lined up ( @BrickedtoPerfection ) as it's really screwed up his plans.

    Where does LEGO draw the line for "historical?" Steam is clearly fine but can I submit a 1950s vehicle or...? Heck, 90s cars are legally classics and qualify for antique/historic vehicle plates, but don't look super different from "modern" cars... This rule grinds my gears. LEGO makes plenty of obviously gas-powered vehicles to this day, so this greenwashing bullcrap from whoever is in charge of BLDP is hypocritical nonsense. Also, zoos inspire people to care about animals and grow up to be the people saving endangered species. Zoos also serve a critical function in protecting endangered species by providing safe spaces for them to increase in numbers before reintroducing them to the wild, as NOT having some in captivity would put them at much higher risk. Zoos actively study and protect animals while educating the public on them and showing why caring about them matters. Animal activists consistently fail to realize the important role zoos play in getting people to care about animals, and now it seems LEGO has also been invaded by their misguided thinking.

    • @BasedPlateReviews
      @BasedPlateReviews  2 месяца назад

      I attended the BrickLink webinar on Monday and they clarified it a little with vehicles. You just can't make it overtly obvious they are using fossil fuel i.e. a big V8 engine on show. The issue of course is that you're probably safer just not to submit a gas powered vehicle to the designs at all just to be sure.

    • @lopoa126
