We started up an 80 gal in summer 2020 and all was going great adding a fish at a time… then in fall we noticed ich. Thankfully we don’t have any coral yet, because we had to basically break down the scape to get the 7 fish out, and ran the tank fallow. We lost three during copper treatment, and now we do an observation on ALL fish for at least 30 days, preferably 90days. Just like you mentioned, it gives us a chance to watch them, make sure they are behaving normally and eating, and gives them a chance to rest and de-stress after transport and the fish store. We have lost a couple in the last year, and while each loss hurts, at least I’m not paranoid about the display and my other pets because they were not exposed to anything.
waiting forwhat type of medications to use for example velvet, ich etc. if a fish cant handle copper than what alt. meds can be used to treat the disease.
wish this series would come out faster as i want to learn how to quarantine fish because I'm in the process of setting up a tank and would love to do it myself. hopefully this doesn't take 18 weeks to come out completely
Loving this. Are you guys going to create your recommended step by step process for your proposed quarantine procedure? That would be really helpful, thanks guys!
Perhaps you could make a video on how to make the physical labor easier, such as for people with pain disorders or arthritis? (EDIT) I would like to point out that 100% water changes are indeed stressful IF you're rough or clumsy with the catching process. If you're quick and gentle, it's a lot less so.
Hey i got a coralife biocube 32. I whant to know if i buy 2 AI prime an i put it under the hood with some kind of diffucer light paper. If that could worck for my nano reef. I reely like the idea to configurate the lights. And how good are the 32 gallons thank lights?
If you are going to use the AI Prime, I would suggest to completely remove the lid. The Primes won't work very well long-term in that humid and enclosed environment.
Curious what’s wrong with 25% weekly water changes if the QT is cycled and has been up for months, especially if the fish is very small relative to the tank.
Most of the time medication requires larger water changes as specified on their labels- some 50% and others 100%. medication is also dosed to be a certain concentration in the water, not based on livestock size
Would love to see an episode or two on methods for countries like Canada where you can’t get 99% of the medications available in the states anymore. The only way it to try and order from eBay and hope the border agents don’t know what they are looking at if it does get checked.
@Deathrow Inmate For bacterial infections cephalexin or metronidazole has worked in killing aeromonas and pseudomonas bacteria and fungi back when fish were more wild, both are also effective remedies in fighting off gill disease, cryptocaryon irritants And I used to use in the past but use furan now bc it's cheaper and available locally Usually ime though fungus and bacterias are less common in saltwater as saline water is a natural antiseptic being rich in trace minerals, but can still occur but are more common in freshwater, but I have used both In salt and fresh and both are great options in treating with an antibiotic option Saltwater fish are generally parasite ridden while their freshwater counterparts are more susceptible to fungi and bacterias Copper instead Is rather utilized in exterminating certain hook flukes that attach to eyes and gill plate but overlooks those embedded in the slime coat Unfortunately copper is mostly for treating ich and isnt really used in an application for treating bacterias or fungi but doesnt completely eradicate if u are not stringent in upkeep and is still ineffective against internal parasites, brook and euronema So when most people qt they usually do a nice slow drip if the fish has had a long stressful trip Hard copper rich water isnt gonna help the fish it's only gonna hurt the fish at this point Ud be better off to do formalin or bath in quickstop or something formalin based then do a 60min antibiotic bath wait a few days and start with prazi You may even wanna wait a couple days and observe the fish in qt to before even adding anything to make sure its eating observe movement eating pattern eyes sline coat finds then go from their after la couple days Most professional fishkeepers usually start at off with something like an antibiotic bath 60bmins like mentioned above then a formalin bath the next day repeated with a few breaks in between then they start dosing praziquantul based medication to treat for internal parasites then finish off with copper situation dependent Usually a 6 to 8 week process if your trying to eradicate not manage/ mask
And even if u decided to go oldschool and run cupramine green and methylene blue u may wanna do your research into what kind of scale your fish has and if its smooth scales you may wanna avoid copper completely or run it at half the ratio of what the bottle says and gradual increase the amount left in the water column in order to build the fish up it not just shock it all at once, alot of people kill their perfectly healthy copperbands or eels shocking them to death with the cupramine when there are better options available and different things are used for different applications dont kill a 60$ fish because u were impatient we've all been there and it can be frustrating just wait...its worth the time and effort even if it takes longer you know the fish will come out healthy in the end
Please research the symptoms of your fish, and possibly your type of fish. Copper is used for parasites like ich, but is not an antibacterial, and some species do not tolerate copper treatment very well. Your local fish store may be able to assist as well if you can show picture or video. If I’m remembering correctly, metroplex, kanaplex or Maracyn one or maracyn 2 were all good for bacterial infections. Choose the medicine based on the symptom and you will be more likely to have success
I think this series would serve the community better to actually QT a sick fish and go step by step in a series to make said fish healthy again....I just think yall are overwhelming new ppl with another 20 part series....for QT....which is supposed to "be easy" or give ppl confidence to do it
@@BRStv awesome.... I also think you guys could cut in some sample photos when you mention ick, velvet, flukes etc....really drive home what the community should be looking for
Since this series is in relation to qt, I believe they are referring to the large water changes that are required when or after dosing medications, usually 50-100%. In a regular tank 10-25% is the regular for maintenance water changes
If you're intimidated by the idea of quarantine, there are always vendors out there that will quarantine fish for you. You pay more for that service, but sometimes it's worth it.
It is no wonder why quarantine means different things to different people cause the term is in my understanding used continuously wrong. If one looks the definition of quarantine it mentions nothing of a treatment - it only means isolation. Treating the cause looks to be a different thing. By no means i am against quarantine with medication against most common issues but it might be best to come up with a better term for the whole process. 🤔

not a lot of things on youtube have review value. but these fish qt and desease treatment sessions with Elliot keep their value.

Super excited for this series!

Yes! We laid out all 15 episodes of this series in episode #1, so it's coming 😁

Would you be able to do a video on protocol for quarantining sensitive fish such as butterflies and mandarins?
We can definitely consider it after this series comes to a close 🙂
Great video guys
Literally just finished cycling my QT tank 😜 get out my head BRS

lol to that giant bio block plate for 1 damsel in the first 10 seconds
curious what you guys think of herbtana?

Great Video
What about bacterial infections?
Will copper work?

Usually ime though fungus and bacterias are less common in saltwater as saline water is a natural antiseptic being rich in trace minerals, but can still occur but are more common in freshwater, but I have used both In salt and fresh and both are great options in treating with an antibiotic option

Copper instead
Is rather utilized in exterminating certain hook flukes that attach to eyes and gill plate but overlooks those embedded in the slime coat
Unfortunately copper is mostly for treating ich and isnt really used in an application for treating bacterias or fungi but doesnt completely eradicate if u are not stringent in upkeep and is still ineffective against internal parasites, brook and euronema
So when most people qt they usually do a nice slow drip if the fish has had a long stressful trip
Hard copper rich water isnt gonna help the fish it's only gonna hurt the fish at this point
Ud be better off to do formalin or bath in quickstop or something formalin based then do a 60min antibiotic bath wait a few days and start with prazi
You may even wanna wait a couple days and observe the fish in qt to before even adding anything to make sure its eating observe movement eating pattern eyes sline coat finds then go from their after la couple days
Most professional fishkeepers usually start at off with something like an antibiotic bath 60bmins like mentioned above then a formalin bath the next day repeated with a few breaks in between then they start dosing praziquantul based medication to treat for internal parasites then finish off with copper situation dependent
Usually a 6 to 8 week process if your trying to eradicate not manage/ mask

Aeromonas bacteria is a freshwater bacteria. Vibrio is a great concern in Saltwater fish.

Never thought about stress hormones in QT water!
Did my first medicated quarantine and it was successful with two fish.
NICELY DONE

by number 12s logic 100% WC in a fish only system is good thing and not stress inducing or cause of a mini cycle?
Since this series is in relation to qt, I believe they are referring to the large water changes that are required when or after dosing medications, usually 50-100%.

Absolutely love this series. Need to setup a qt
I love what your doing with this series but it’s kinda turning me off on keeping a reef tank should I be as scared as I am?

How does copper kill parasites?
Copper is essentially a poison. We use it in concentrations where the fish can survive, but simpler organisms like marine ich will die.
I did everything right, now three blennies are dead...
Livestock is really challenging, sometimes you think you are doing everything right and it doesn't work out.
