  • It's time to take your saltwater fish quarantine skills to Phase 2! Continuing on from last week's Phase 1, where Ryan and Elliot introduced the 80/20 QT to treat for ich and marine velvet, Phase 2 involves one extra step to cover your new fish from brooklynella as well as uronema. It's as easy as that!

I also would like to see this in some sort of outline or document. I get what you guys are saying but it’s hard to put it all together into the correct order because there is a some bouncing around when taking about what to do. Can you guys make a graphic or just an outline with the proper order on how to do phase 1 and 2?

I mentioned this on a Instagram post but figured I'd say it here...
Not doing a proper QT or paying someone is one of the most significant reasons I've seen people exit the hobby over the past 20yrs. I appreciate the knowledge shared of how... it gives me a better understanding of when I pay someone else to do it.
For me it's like cabinet work, I can do it and I've done it. At this point I'd rather pay someone else to do the job right (now that I know what that is) and free up my time to do what I'm good at.

Great series guys! I hope this will continue with quarantine protocols (passive/active/prophylactic) for corals and inverts as well. I'm pretty confident in my fish & coral procedures, but much less confident about whether nasties might hitchhike along with inverts.
I quarantine them for 76 days, but that won't stop uronema from catching a ride. Every other malady on our watch list will be eradicated by that fallow period, but something I don't know enough about is which infections if any, might be able to sustain themselves on inverts. I know even less about safe and effective treatment methods for inverts.

I've used Formalin successfully since 1988 for external protozoa, quinine is hit or miss metro and quaziprantel is always something I do for both fresh and saltwater fish. Formalin seems to work even better mixed with copper sulfate.

I’m new to marine fish. We are just transferring from freshwater. In the QT regimen we used for freshwater you wouldn’t feed for about the first 4 days bc of the treatment of internal parasites. In this QT method, especially with no biological filter, how often do you feed?

I did a 1mL formalin per 1 gallon RODI formalin bath with 3 Green Chromis for 3 min, after going into the QT Tank they all died within 20 minutes. Of note, 1 of them showed a bit red, probably uronema, before the bath, after dying the red was very visually apparent on 2 of them. Also of note, they seemed pretty messed up after the bath, like, I would almost say they were blind. But not sure, in any case they were acting real weird.
I then did it again, using 0.3 to 0.4 mL per gallon on 3 new Green Chromis for 3 min. They seemed to be much better in QT than the previous batch, so I decided to walk away and let them sit overnight. In the morning, all 3 were dead. Of note, none of these 3 showed any red after death. Also of note, while they acted much better than the previous 3, they still seemed off after going into QT tank. Like when you put your hand up to the glass normally Chromis bolt, but these did not, again, almost like they were blind and couldn’t see me.
Not saying formalin is the wrong approach, but I am fairly certain these levels for 3 min will kill Chromis. Also of note, I tend to go with the smallest ones I can get. So perhaps bigger fish would handle these levels better? I may also mis understand the instructions, am I supposed to be mixing the formalin with salt water or RODI? Because based on these videos it sounded like it was supposed to be done in place of the fresh water bath, so I assumed it goes in fresh water. If not, you guys should correct the video so it is clear what is supposed to be used.
Edit: Update: found the BRS written directions, and yes the formalin is supposed to be done with saltwater. So, I tried this again with 3x green chromis at 0.6mL per gallon of 37% formalin with 10-15% menthol, 3 min bath. They looked pretty dazed in the QT tank, which is 10 gallon with pvc, air stone, no copper. 1 died within 20 min, the next about an hour, and the last after several hours, all of them acting pretty funny after the bath, like I say, almost like they were blind.
Tried again with 3 chromis, this time doing 0.3mL per gallon formalin. Again 3 min bath. Again, 1 died pretty quick in QT tank after like maybe 20 min, the next after about an hour, the next after a couple hours.
Its possible that I am not aerating the formalin enough, I have an air stone in there going full blast, but I am adding the formalin and then about 10min later I am putting the fish in, maybe it needs more time to settle and get oxygen back in there or a larger air stone.
But for me, I am either not going to use formalin anymore or I will use it more like a 5 second dip rather than several minute bath. That at least removes the oxygen angle. If they still wind up all messed up I think I am just done with formalin altogether. I will do tank transfer and copper, and just accept uronema and brook are getting in the tank.

    • @shaneep7
      @shaneep7 Год назад

Update, tried 1 more time, I think I figured it out. A much bigger air stone, and I added the formalin, and then let the water sit with the airstone going for about 30 minutes before putting fish in there.
The chromis seem fine after a 3 minute bath this time, in a couple days I will do another 30 minute bath between water changes and see how they do.
Edit: Update: they all died overnight. At this point I am skipping the formalin, its not worth it.
I guess something could be wrong in my QT tank, as they died overnight where previous it was like an hour.
But I am clearly doing something wrong at some stage of this, and Uronema is a smaller problem than every fish I touch dying.

Formalin is added to a separate container of fresh SALT water and fish is left in there for 30 min. Nowhere do they mention adding formalin to RO water dip…
