I noticed your keys just chilling in the ignition. That might be a convenient place to keep them, but it could potentially create a problem if you've been drinking or have partaken in anything else: Be it recreational, medicinal, or even prescription. There might be certain exceptions in your state that apply to watercraft with living quarters, much the same as there are often particular exceptions for RVs, but without any such exceptions, a key in the ignition (even if turned off) with you the only one onboard is always going to be considered you are in control of a motor vehicle. That's an important thing to keep in mind if you are in an area where you are likely to be confronted by law enforcement.
Yes to all of it with some exceptions. At 71, single, with the skill set to build but now lacking the physical abilities of my youth, and after a few years of planning, I’ve started building a pontoon based houseboat. Twenty four foot tritoon with a 16’ cabin. The major differences; my helm is located at the front of the cabin for maximum visibility. Because I’m not going to be around forever, I’m building a boat with an eye to my heirs selling it, if they choose to. So, I’m building in amenities that I personally can live without but will make the boat attractive to potential buyers after I’m gone. So, solar, air conditioning, onboard potable water, a toilet, a tankless water heater, and the requisite wastewater tanks are part of the plan. My windows, doors and dual fuel appliances are salvaged from RVs. Because I’m in southern Ontario, my insulation needs have to meet the requirements for 4 season living in our cold-ish winters. Since discovering your channel some time ago, I’ve become an avid follower cuz your an inspiration to me. Thank you!
Having a little solar when you're boondocking really is a game changer. 200w of solar with a 100ah battery is 500 bucks these days and gives you lights, fans, and charging flashlights and phones and computers.
You're living your dream, and that is what matters. I've lived off the grid, and it made me realize how much electricity i don't need. Why waste the money on solar if you have everything you need. Most people don't understand the happiness factor that you have found. You're blessed.
You are my inspiration! I am 76 now and have been looking for a pontoon boat for years - most are way too small. I just sold my pull truck - a Ford ranger 4 wheel drive - it just sits there and I had to let it go. Its getting late in life so I love watching your channel.Ive been subscribed for a while and like things you do. Keep it up friend!! Greetings from Perth Ontario Canada.

I hear ya, my battery set up was free from sponsorship, and if a company wanted to sponsor us with solar, I would jump on it... Thanks bud... I appreciate you watching 👍
You said this was going to be a good one and you didn't lie This was so full of interesting information. If you are thinking about getting chickens for your houseboat I have seen people in videos purchase Japanese quail and they raised them in very small spaces however the eggs are small but don't make a lot of noise and from what I've read aren't as messy as the chickens. You should look into getting a cast net to get more fish. I'm sure you're gonna work it all out and have a lot of fun thanks for sharing much appreciated
Looks like you’re living the life most folks would enjoy. Being self efficient and making do with less is actually something I would like to achieve someday. Living off mother, nature with hunting and fishing helps a lot. The chickens are a good idea fresh eggs but might be a logistics headache and might attract unwanted guests. Great video ! 👍🐆🐆😎
You get the same questions i do. Most common question is why dont you add solar? My answer is ... Because i have a generator lol! Also, my head sucks water out of the lake so i don't have to use fresh water. I do go pump it out but its free at the marina, they have a nice set up so it just takes a few minutes. Looks like you are set up perfect for the way you use your boat. Thanks for the tour.
I have enjoyed your channel for a while now but not from the start. This one really tied it all together for me. I'm also 45. The wife and I purchased a 40 foot schoolbus and had a roof raise done. We were going to live on it full time but our kids started growing up to fast and it was so "cool" of an idea anymore. We decided to keep the house but both my wife and I have managed to be responsible enough with our debts to both work two 12 hours shifts a week at this time. We value time over money and things we don't need. We value memories being made. We are nurses but would rather be full time musicians. We'll that ain't happening now either. Lol. So we bought our beloved C Dory. Now we do overnight boat adventures with the kids and it's the best of both worlds. We love roughing it and tiny spaces and being on the water. My wife really loves the boat I picked for us. It's perfect. The ole C-Shanty! I'm rambling now. Brenton from Backwaters introduced me to your channel. I'm truly inspired by the both of you. You are living a peaceful admirable life brother. Thanks for posting all of these and sharing your wisdom. Greetings from Eastern NC and be good or be good at it Martin. I really enjoyed this one immensely. Stay safe. 🙏❤️😎🤙🐟
Great story captain, c dory's are amazing and time spent with kids is priceless. 👍 sounds like just a different kind of paradise. Thanks for watching another video....
You and me sorta think alike. I still work, but not a lot, service work only, plumbing, I started building a cabin about 20 years ago on some land I bought. I have gardens, grape vines and fruit trees. I have laying hens, but I wouldn't advise that, you can buy eggs cheaper, plus they would drive you crazy on a boat, and you wouldn't be able to keep them alive, hawks, eagles, dogs, foxes bobcats gators, you name it. Food is my biggest expense also.
Another great video brother. Looks Loki you have some serious decisions to make . It seems like you know the sailboat has to go but it’s killing ya just thinking about it. Good luck. No matter what I’m sure you’ll be a happy camper! 💯
Great video my friend happy for you and it's a special lifestyle you live. I appreciate what you've managed to do and although I like it after having struggled through the conventional path at 81 with health issues starting to come up as inevitably they do it's a comfort to know I'm monetarily secure. Just sayin through a weather eye to the inevitably of the future
Driving down South and staying on the bayous in the Winter is going to be a bad idea. I live in S. Louisiana, literally on the bayou. My fellow Louisianans might get mad at me, but deep down, they know all of this is true. If you are staying off grid, you'd better have a gun, especially if you aren't from here, and it shows. You are going to be alone and vulnerable, so be prepared to get robbed or come back to everything gone if you leave that boat in the middle of nowhere and go off on an adventure in the dingy. The water quality is awful. Even if it is "fresh" water, it's nasty. Everyone is using a septic tank that empties into a creek or ditch that eventually reaches you. Then there's the agricultural and industrial run-off. You can't really walk in the shallows either because it's all marsh. A lot of it is going to be highly polluted from the chemical plants and refineries. There are waterways and estuaries where it is recommended you eat absolutely nothing from them because of this. If you can stand 80 decibels of insects and frogs all night, then okay. It absolutely stinks, and often like methane, and this can get to the point it makes you light-headed. The mosquito swarms are straight out of Hell. Also, in the Winter, there might not be hurricanes, but that's when it rains and storms the most. Also, I can guarantee living on or beside the water, if your pets are not alert and do not have a natural fear of the water, and if you are not meticulously careful to keep them away from the water, they will eventually get eaten. In a lot of places, alligators are scared shitless of people. These are the places where loud boats speed through or that allow seasonal, licensed hunting. They will get as far away from you as fast as they can. However, everywhere else, this is not the case, especially in parkland where they are protected. They will not hesitate to snatch a small animal, but I've never known a person who has been attacked by one. The worst they will do is swim up and brush against you, which is them being polite enough to tell you to leave. People often say it's because people have been feeding them, and it's their way of asking for food. Ain't nobody regularly feeding gators in the wild. That's so stupid. People desperately want to believe it's safe to swim in this nasty water.
I have traveled everywhere in America and it is all safe in my experience. Feel free to watch all 400 plus videos as I have documented it. Experience is the best proof that folk are simply scared of everything for mainly no reason. My channel is a positive one, so please focus your comments on positive topics thank you for watching...
So what exactly do you do with the bags of poo at the marina? Dump it in a toilet? Throw it in a dumpster? That part wasn’t clear, though your reasoning was. And do you use river water for showering? If you rinse dishes with river water, don’t you worry about how clean it is?
Thanks for asking... The bags are put in the dumpster with the garbage. They have powder that makes it safe, identical to diapers. I do shower with river water and rinse dishes with it to, only in creeks. Not near the main river or any marina. The intake is a foot under water, so it's pretty clean water. I drink water from the Marina, filtered by my Berky filter. Pets too. Although River drinks from the river all the time. 👍
Don't know the legal legalities. But maybe if you find native edible plants. Harvest transparent make a natural guardian in a cove. In multiple places.
What im hearing you should be on Mississippi river run south in winter hunt pigs free no coast plus you can stock up on bacon lol come back up north in summer time to your camper fishing easy set trout line catch catfish you live off fish tacos
@@ATAP...AnotherTime if you soak the cat in mountain dew it takes all fish taste out just what I do everyone claims it's best catfish they eat ive always done it or milk
I actually like the smell of the pine shavings. And they're really cheap at the store for animal bedding. But I bet the pellets soak up moisture really good.
A couple of things: obviously your wife didn't buy into your new lifestyle. Too bad. One problem with living off the grid, so to speak, is what happens in the event of a medical emergency? Love your intent and ambition. Good luck!
My ex wife really likes this lifestyle and she is one of my subscribers... The hospital is actually closer than the food store that I go to, so I pass it all the time if I needed help. I would go there. Are hospital also has a helicopter? If it was something serious. There's actually a lot of people who live farther from the hospital in this community than I am in normal houses. The fire department is volunteer, so the ambulance coming is not going to come fast.
Your poop bucket do you mix wood shaver in it, guessing you take a leak off the back of you boat when nature call but do the dishes first right, have to say I enjoy watching your life on the water.
Your vary young my friend…. Wish I done it back then … being 76… I’ll stick with being on the farm doing some traveling (which cost $$) just my two cents on things that I comment
Love the channel just came across it. Yeah I too have been down a similar rd. I left a full time job as a psychotherapist in Boulder CO to realize I wanted to live in the Forest n desert as much as possible so I ended my work bought a truck camper n work 5 months a year as a handyman now. I luv the house boat, so zen simple. And the amount of time you get for livin n not at some job is brilliant. I run two dometic 12 volt 45q coolers one as a fridge n one as a freezer so I can maximize the amount of food i have n can stay out for longer periods of time. But yes I’ve spent way too much on the solar system for it and still need more power. The sun is pretty good in Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona where I spend the majority of my time out on public lands BLM n National Forest. My “dingy” is my mt bike , I’m 52 n have been doing this boondocking life style for over a decade and yes it goes by fast. I too felt compelled to do a meditation/yoga retreat for long periods of time in natural places and living in a truck camper on public lands has shown me the way to be able to afford it. I’m inspired by your simple living direction. And yeah frogs legs are great! Lol Chicken like , enjoy the journey
Seems like you got stuff. Figured out yourself too bud. I love Colorado I spent a lot of time in Arizona in New Mexico in the RV life. But it gets hot during the summer though... I appreciate you watching the channel. Thanks bud
@@ATAP...AnotherTime yes I fallow the weather. I work in Boulder in spring to mid summer take 8 weeks off in Mts then back for fall and the head to AZ mid November it’s great. I used to chase the snow and snowboard all over the west but as you are, I’m trying to simplify so I don’t have to work too hard. You’re definitely an inspiration.
Little bit less than ninety wide, twenty six feet long... The? House part is thirteen feet by eight and a half... Never hesitate to ask a question. I appreciate the comment and do watching the videos. Thank you
The registration for boats here and I pay for a dock that the sailboat stays on. Registration fir the houseboat is $89 a year and the dock is 100 a month. Not bad.
Hard question.. I truly feel this is an individual based question. Some folks go to the doctor very regularly, some every 5 years. In my case,,. I used to pay 425 a month for insurance while working at a farm. After 6 years I had gone 2 times for a physical and no other times. So, now I have catastrophe insurance that only covers after I pay 5 thousand out of pocket in a rolling year. However , I have the money to pay that 5 thousand. It is extremely cheep. 200 a year.. I have gone to the hospital 2x emergency and the cost after payment arrangements was less then $400. Each time. So I have saved 425x 60 months only to be out of pocket 800. I do get annual blood work due to family history that is $125... however, no 2 people are the same and if I got sick more often my plan would be different. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it 👍
Lots of information in this video... history of my travels to off grid water life, boat Tour, system recap.
Congratulations! You have life figured out! It is not consumerism, but being content and free.

I just had this conversation, and i completely agree. Replanting a bunch of berries in a clump would be cool.
Great idea, thanks 😊

Hi Udo. Good morning, or evening 😆...
best way to live
Thanks my friend I appreciate it 👍
Have you tried using saw dust, or ground up wood pellets in your poop can. I myself use ground up wood pellets in my poop can.
I actually like the smell of the pine shavings. And they're really cheap at the store for animal bedding. But I bet the pellets soak up moisture really good.
Love it
Thank you. I appreciate you watching. 😃
❤🙂
Super funny 😁. I really pee on land unless anchored. Mainly because I use the river water. I do use shavings in the bucket 🪣. Handful every use. 👍
Your vary young my friend…. Wish I done it back then … being 76… I’ll stick with being on the farm doing some traveling (which cost $$) just my two cents on things that I comment
Thanks brother. I appreciate the feedback 👍
You're poor next girlfriend, coming in 2nd or 3rd after cricket and river😂😉
You've got it dialed in Martin...enjoy while youre a youngin❤
Awe kiddo... 😃 ❤️
Yep , Life is like a Blind man using flour looking for a wet spot.
😆
Get another rv or trailer in 20 years. Storing it is a loss month after month.
I store it for free on my property...
. But in 20 years, what condition will it be in? I've found over time that a lot of systems need to be used and maintained with a certain cost.
How big is your boat if you don't mind me asking I been looking through all the videos have heard it unless I missed it sorry if so lol
Little bit less than ninety wide, twenty six feet long... The?
House part is thirteen feet by eight and a half... Never hesitate to ask a question. I appreciate the comment and do watching the videos. Thank you
You have to pay any fees for living in that area.Or do you just have to move every so often?
The registration for boats here and I pay for a dock that the sailboat stays on. Registration fir the houseboat is $89 a year and the dock is 100 a month. Not bad.
How do you handle health insurance, and health care expenses?
Thanks for watching, I appreciate it 👍
@@ATAP...AnotherTime thank you for sharing your journey and experience … inspiring
I'm not far from you.
The chickens will pay off … do it
so... ur not obligated to ur wife no more?
