Another 5 year old video that I’m watching again and boy is my mouth watering. I’m going to go and find that biscuit one and watch it again. Thanks Dan. I would say keep up the great work but 5 years later and you still are.
Great now it's midnight and I'm lying in bed starving after watching this. Notice that there are no thumbs downs on this. Everyone loves sausage gravy and biscuits!!!!
I find it amazing how food tastes better outdoors. Like always. I don't know if it's the clear air, or the hightened senses when 'in the woods' or the hunger from actually doing something for the grub. This looks so good and I know we got an old dutch oven somewhere in the shed or cellar or attic. Will try something new, and 'biscuits and gravy': Not so common in northern Germany. Thank you for the inspiration.
Your videos have significantly improved my camping experiences. This video made my mouth water the entire time and i'm not one who grew up eating any wild game; I would destroy the breakfast! Keep on bushin, Dan.
Excellent! I must give it a shot, next time I'm out. Thanks. Reminded me of an anecdote in Bernard DeVoto's "Across the Wide Missouri". The wife of the very first Christian missionary to Oregon brought along flour and the means to make bread. A young Flathead boy had learned a Christian hymn and determined to impress this woman in hopes of worldly gain. (In those days, the Flatheads were business men, not to be trifled with.) He sang the hymn very sweetly and the woman was so impressed, she rewarded the boy with a fresh biscuit. So, along comes Jim Bridger, who finds the boy with his biscuit. "Where did you get it?" And the boy explained. Jim had not tasted bread in many years, so he implored the young entrepreneur to go sing again...
I just left a comment on the 'biscuit video,' but I wanted to say that this recipe came out great at camp as well. Fresh from scratch biscuits and sausage gravy is awesome and really easy. Thank you.
One of the things I learned early about making gravy is to make it just a bit thinner in the pot. The Minute you take it off the heat, it gets thicker. Gravy like spackle 😝. You did great, Dan.👍💜
I pre make all my sausage gravy & biscuits and then put them through my freeze dryer. Whether it’s breakfast, dinner or supper you can’t beat this food when it comes to cold weather.
Only add enough flower to capture the grease. Corn starch for bird grease or pork. If you are making it wet, premix flour with a little warm water and blend it in. Black pepper is a must.
That stuff is my ABSOLUTE favorite breakfast and so easy to make!!! BTW, I love to add a bit of Onion and green peppers. Not much, just a touch for extra flavor.
Homer Simpson voice - "MMMmmmm ... gravy .... drool." This should be a mainstay in anyone's camp kitchen (or regular kitchen) arsenal. One little trick to boost the flavor is to cook the flour long enough it starts to smell "nutty" before adding the milk. Not too much, if it starts to get beyond tan and toward brown it's thickening power is reduced. Also, if you're not doing this in cast iron (bushpots work too, but iron is best) you may find that returning it to the heat and stirring constantly will make it thicken (once it starts to boil, take it off the heat and as it cools it will get as thick as it's going to get - don't burn it.) It can be made with any meat, (bacon, hamburger, summer sausage, etc.) or without (corn chowder, baby red potatoes/corn/carrots/peas, etc.) Coarse ground black pepper is the definite standby, but don't be afraid of trying new things like a bit of cayenne, a little finely ground sage, and a splash of Tabasco (that'll wake you up in the morning.) For those of you that are adventurous try a bit of curry. It goes great w/ eggs and can even tolerate being served alongside salsa. Also use it to dress up taters, toast, pancakes, grilled or fried chicken, pork chops, or even straight from the pan with a spoon. (you get the idea...) Washing your pan before it gets cold will help with cleanup (this stuff will set up like concrete if you let it.) ENJOY!
Thank you for this video. I have never been a big biscuits and gravy person, but they were great. I even got my picky teenage daughters to eat them(they almost got mad because they liked them). As simple as both are to do, we will be eating these a lot.
Nice video Dan , thank you for making want to pull the jimmy dean sausage out of my fridge and start cooking at 830 at night. Damn you. , but it looks so good. Have made it over toast camping but the biscuits may have to be my next campfire cooking. As always thanks for sharing , loved the smile with the first bite.
Try adding bacon fat to the gravy. Adds a level of flavor you can't get any other way! Garlic too! Good stuff maynard! LOL I just found your vids and love the way you teach. Your little guy is awesome. My friend in central oregon is Dan at OCHOCO BUSHCRAFT! I have made a video with him showing some of my knife work.
Okay Dan, I love biscuits and gravy. My question is how do you contain all your ingredients for travel and long term ? If you have covered this before please direct me to the video. Thanks for all the knowledge you share.
Mm mm mmm! I love a good biscuits and gravy, probably even more than bacon! It's hard to beat it for a good southern breakfast. I've gotta say, I really appreciate how hard you work on these videos, even though the community isn't that massive yet compared to some of the other "survival" youtubers. In my humble opinion, I think you and Survival Russia are probably the two best channels for understanding the reality of survival, and both of you deserve way more subs than most of these other folks have.
Wow,,, yum,,, I'll be right there... But something you might try...I put the flour in on the browned sausage first. Brown the flour on the sausage first. Then I add the butter. And when that is cooked together, I put a little water in to cool the pan, and then I dump in the CREAM... COME on over, I've made plenty. 😆
Hey Dan, looks amazing. In one of your other videos you mentioned carb cycling. Any advice you can give on that? I’ve been on keto for about a year and a half and I’m looking to change it up
an easy way to have this when you cannot keep items cold (sausage and milk) is to use canned condensed milk...add some water. then spam, dried beef or any number of smoked meats instead of sausage. without a doubt biscuits and gravy is a welcome meal when you are working hard in the woods. throw in some fried taters and coffee....mmm mmm good!
Just how I make it. Good stuff! Have you done cornbread yet? I mean, I'm sure you've *eaten* it, and probably with sausage gravy, but have you done a video making campfire cornbread?
Great video and I can smell it from North East England but in NE England "biscuits" are called "Bread Buns" and "cookies" are called "biscuits" nevertheless thanks once again and ATB 4 2018
Great recipe! I use 1 pound pork sausage flavored with sage, no butter because of the pork fat. ‘But some butter wouldn’t hurt”. 3 tablespoons of flour, browned well and one cup of milk. Bring to a boil and oh ya pepper and Tabasco to taste. Scramble or fry a half dozen eggs and you can happily feed 6 or eight people with 2 pans in 30 min. I do cheat and use packaged biscuits. If it’s not too hot here in Texas you can use the frozen sausage to keep the eggs and biscuits cold for morning 2 of a hike.
Love watching your videos as a Pennsylvania girl myself, I do wish that you would include girls in your “boys” comments. Women are getting into bushcraft too.
Desiree Swift your absolutely right... I find I say 'hey guys' a lot in my videos as well, but It is pretty innocent in my case. I subscribe to a lot of woman bushcrafters and most of them are much better than most guys, and to be honest I don't think I could find a better partner in the woods than my wife... I don't think he means anything by it, but I hear you...
Also, I just want to say that the quality of your content is really good. Good topics, consumable length, high video quality. Keep up the good work!
I’m not sure how many times I’ve watched this one but I’m salivating again. 4 years ago you were doing a great job, now you still are.
I agree, it needs to be tried to be appreciated. One of my favorites as well. Thanks, Chef Coalcracker!
That sausage gravy looks good! A hearty breakfast to warm you up. Its good to see someone who can cook on a fire old world style!
Instablaster.
That’s right, pepper in southern gravy! At least here in North GA
Favorite breakfast over here in Wv too. Great demonstration of how to properly make it too. Good job.
Biscuits and gravy in the woods during winter. Can’t be beat!!!

Love the cooking in the woods!! More please
Your videos have significantly improved my camping experiences. This video made my mouth water the entire time and i'm not one who grew up eating any wild game; I would destroy the breakfast! Keep on bushin, Dan.
I combine the two favorites, I make biscuits and bacon gravy. Yummy.
Excellent! I must give it a shot, next time I'm out. Thanks.

I love it that you refer to the roux. That "stuff on the bottom of the pan" is fond. GREAT video and can't wait to try this!
I pre make all my sausage gravy & biscuits and then put them through my freeze dryer. Whether it’s breakfast, dinner or supper you can’t beat this food when it comes to cold weather.

Did you see the big o smile on his face as he was dishing it up? Lol...
Well first off merry Christmas and Happy New Year . Nice video! You make gravy just like me.
Great minds think alike !

I'm pretty sure this the culinary expression of bliss.
Nothing better than sausage gravy on a good biscuit! Nice!
Next time on cooking with Coalcracker! Awesome video.
That looks really good. Now I am going to have to make some today. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for this video. I have never been a big biscuits and gravy person, but they were great. I even got my picky teenage daughters to eat them(they almost got mad because they liked them). As simple as both are to do, we will be eating these a lot.
Biscuits + sausage gravy + nap = perfect morning

Okay Dan, I love biscuits and gravy. My question is how do you contain all your ingredients for travel and long term ? If you have covered this before please direct me to the video. Thanks for all the knowledge you share.
Home made sausage gravy, good homemade biscuits and pour a little bit of syrup over top for sweet and then cayenne pepper for a little bite to it. 👌🇺🇸

Mm mm mmm! I love a good biscuits and gravy, probably even more than bacon! It's hard to beat it for a good southern breakfast. Looks delicious!

Hey Dan, looks amazing. In
one of your other videos you mentioned carb cycling. Any advice you can give on that? I’ve been on keto for about a year and a half and I’m looking to change it up
Damn that looks good. You can also make that, and the biscuits, keto friendly. If you haven't already tried it that way, you should.
My 21yr old grandson has been raised on bisquits and gravy since he was a baby. He still orders it at a restarant
Red pepper flakes!! Awesome content bud.
Yummy , like meat desert for breakfast 👍🏼👌🤤
Favorite meal!
Love the sausage gravy! Pepper essential. An old timer told me it’s called sauSAGE for a reason.
That’s great!! It makes sense for sure
Looks tasty! Thanks!
Omg that looks soooooo good! Mmmmm
Oh yeah ... love me some biscuits and gravy!
S.O.S over home fries that is some great eats you should try out
an easy way to have this when you cannot keep items cold (sausage and milk) is to use canned condensed milk...add some water. then spam, dried beef or any number of smoked meats instead of sausage. without a doubt biscuits and gravy is a welcome meal when you are working hard in the woods. throw in some fried taters and coffee....mmm mmm good!

Saute diced onions with the sausage to add flavor to the gravy.
