Unfortunately RUclips stopped streaming surround sound (5.1) some time in 2019, so this clip will actually be stereo. If you play the clip you will find the sound coming out of all of your 5.1 system speakers. I do not blame the person uploading who will have taken time and care to create a 5.1 clip BUT RUclips must face criticism for not telling them that the sound will be downgraded to basic stereo. You cannot easily test 5.1 Channel configuration using RUclips content, all those beautiful Dolby Atmos clips are also just stereo now unless uploaded by paying companies (for advertising) such as Dolby itself! edit note: PLEASE NOTE - MY REPLY ABOVE WAS POSTED SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND THINGS CHANGE. THERE IS NOW (in 2024) considerable 5.1 surround content as well as 7.1 and Dolby Atmos. Replies to my post above, for example from Nuna07ngente, claiming RUclips has not stopped, or that I am simply wrong should recognise timing. RUclips appears to change policies and handling, so for a period of time it downgraded audio on some clips or for some users/markets and the policy has since changed. This is why it is advisable to look at the age of any content ! :) thanks
No problem if u have a good atmos receiver, those atmos trailer still rocks using DS upmix mode. But these kind of creepy test videos sucks on upmix becoz of poor virtualization.

This is actually great for those of us that use Dolby Pro Logic and virtual 5.1/7.1 inputs. A lot of systems can upscale to 5.1/7.1 these days. Plus I love the music!!
I will fix this issue hopefully before an answer. For a Sony 5.1 Blue ray player, I forget....I send tunes to it from PC mostly. I'm thinking the unit does not want windows adjusting anything. That the Sony is the boss. I sick of restarting. Geez I just wanted to reposition things!
@@AF_1892 There's two major problems: 1. the original song was released in stereo sound (studios often downmix audio for music and music videos) 2. If you had access to the original 5.1, then you would have to decode it. Sony and Dolby make it a royal pain in the ass to encode/decode 5.1 audio. If indies could stop the infighting long enough, maybe they could come up with an alternative like they did Creative Commons. Trust me, setting a DAW to 5.1 takes up plenty of audio bandwidth alone, and then the encoding requires special software that's usually Mac-only. Many software decoders can decode DVD tracks into an AAC file, but you would still need access to the raw 5.1 files.
That's what really bummed me out when Sony bought out SRS Labs. SRS was supposed to be an alternative technology that could provide surround sound with any speaker set, and they were fairly unrestricted in their use. They encouraged people and manufacturers to try SRS. The music industry just couldn't let us have anything easily. @@AF_1892

This video works fine. I tested my Sony HT-S20R 5.1 home theater. The sound came through the speakers individually as shown in the video. So I would recommend to use this for any 5.1 testing.
2023 I have a Bose Cinemate, I guess you can call it a S1. It done, a good job with my “surround”. Like was said, it was pleasant and good quality “considering compression”. Man, I live an compromised, life. But I do enjoy the Bosey sound, and the old school Bose, is just plug and go. Not too many adjustments, if any, only speaker, adjustments.
Correct. MY ONkyo 646 is playing both front and the rear surrounds with this. either left or right . The sound will not isolate to the surround speakers.

What really matters is the device or platform you're using for playback. e.g. RUclips itself supports 5.1 Surround (not sure about 7.1, but I guess it does), but most browsers on Windows don't do anything else than Stereo. There are multiple methods that worked in the past or are still working to make Chrome, Opera and other Browsers play Surround Sound. I was only able to make them play surround sound on other websites, but not on youtube. But I was able to play RUclips Videos, that were uploaded with surround sound, using Players like PotPlayer. It's also possible to download such videos with tools like youtube-dl and play them locally in surround. I also read that App-based Plattforms will play RUclips Videos in Surround, e.g. consoles like the PS4. To summarize it: RUclips DOES support Surround Sound, when the specific video got uploaded with surround sound. It mostly depends on the Software that plays the Video. Maybe your Sound Bar supports Bluetooth? Try to connect your smartphone and play a youtube video from it and listen if it plays in Surround?

I have a 5.1 surround enabled PC which works fine for movies played through file manager, VLC player etc, also works fine in Realtek audio manager, but when I run your RUclips test video the rear channels play through the front speakers. Nothing comes out of the rear speakers at all. Is there a way around this? Thanks.

There's nothing wrong with your setup. This video is misleading, RUclips doesn't support surround sound, only stereo.
