Rob the two mics look like they're not equidistant from the grill, this could be why the audio sounds a little thin. You'll hear a massive improvement if you sort the phasing issue!
Ray Syed It is a tad tiring on the ears, I'll give you that. Sure it sounds great in person, but I found it difficult to listen to the whole way through.
Great job altogether Rob, it's not just about the metal riffs or metal chords, it's about versatility, and playability... This head can actually do it all, just like he said, from blues to rock to metal, to whatever tone you can dial in that YOU like... Rock on bro...
Between your good self and Lee you give me hours of listening pleasure and great advice. I hope to get over from Ireland someday to see the shop. Keep rockin
And also thanks for all your videos Rob, You and Andertons as well , you guys rock i think i have watched like 30 of your videos over just the last week!!
It has plenty of gain, but from my experience using Orange amp at a live situation, especially the Dark Terror, it doesn't have enough brightness or presence to cut through the mix, even though I cut down the gain and dial the shape control to 12:30...
The amp sounds really compressed/fuzzy. I dunno if that is due to youtube or not but Orange amps are definitely an acquired taste. Although I do enjoy them for more stoner/doom/sludge styles.
That's what I figured but even so from what I remember hearing them in person they still are a bit fuzzier than say a Marshall or Laney. I like em but they are suited for certain tones, though most amps are.
The Attenuator on this amp is placed before the output section meaning it functions more like a second master volume rather than a typical attenuator. So NO you cannot use it to drive the power tubes and get classic rock sounds at lower volumes like he says. The power scaling feature will help with that, but it's still going to get pretty loud before the power tubes start to break up...even at the lowest wattage settings
Chappers! Bring your guitars to New Zealand!! Love the idea of a Kauri one!! Those trees are almost sacred here, rather rare.. but incredible colour and patterning!!
If the "attenuator" is the same as the one on the Thunderverb then it's not technically an attenuator that attenuates or 'chokes' the power from the power tubes like a power scaling feature or a load between the output & the speakers. It is a post phase inverter master volume that allows phase inverter distortion at lower levels. This gives the impression of power tube compression because with loud volumes & power tube sag there comes phase inverter clipping inherently. We associate a certain sound with power tube clipping, but much of it is actually the preamp phase inverter. Orange used the word attenuator as a marketing technique, I think.
orange amps to me are just really good for layering and such in the studio. not so much as a main sound. with the exception of this thing. its pretty sick.
I just gota a DD50, it's amazing! It beats the hell out of my OR50, specially in vintage tones! I can almost nail the jtm45 cranked up sag at low volumes! How does the RV50 mkiii compare to the DD50?
Rob.... With Infinium, the Orange auto match stuff, peavey and Fender (with the bassman 100 and 300) all offer an auto bias and active output stage valve safety we (the musicians) don't know what are the differences and plusses of these systems.... Something for the Monkeylord to zoom into?
I don't know if i'm asking for too much but, when you dial in a classic rock tone could you pick harder to bring out the gain. I'm one of those kinds of players, moderate/classic gain with heavy picking. I'd like to see how some amps sound when used that way, i live in a smaller city and often don't have access to these kinds of amps in the local shops. Side note: keep up the great work, i love your reviews. I like the casual feeling of these videos.
Not sure if you did something different or I'm used to Anderton's videos... or if it's the guitar... but this sounds like a solid state amp to be perfectly honest... this is coming from a huge place of respect as I love all your videos...
IDK... over $2k and seems ideal for one specific sound. Very dark and smooth.. Great tone.. but I dont see a lot of versatility. That said.. If I were in a gigging/recording band that was on a quest for a distinct guitar tone of that ilk, I would be giving this amp a serious look. What it does.. it does very very well. Wondering if 6L6s can be swapped in..?
Don't you just hate the audio nazis bitching about how mics are set up and the such like? it's a demo showing you roughly what the amp can do with the intention that you go and try one out for yourselves with your own setup...
go test one for yourself then....he doesn't have to do these demos....they give you a ball park idea of what's available from the amp but the only way you'll get the true sound is to take your own guitar and pedals to a store and try one. Why people think it's ok to bitch and moan at something they haven't paid to see or hear is beyond me
LETS SEE YOUR INCREDIBLE RECORDING TECHNIQUE SINCE YOU MUST BE RICK RUBEN OR BOB ROCK, YOU CAN OBVIOUSLY DO A BETTER JOB OTHERWISE YOU WOULDN'T BE COMPLAINING SO MUCH, I'LL WAIT FOR THE NOTIFICATION WHEN YOUR VIDEO GETS POSTED CAUSE I'M ANXIOUS TO HEAR HOW AMAZING ITS GOING TO SOUND
The red ML-3 behind you seems much brighter in color then I remember. I have the black and it is my go to guitar. Just love it. Is it my screen, or is it a new ML-3?
Hey Chappers last year or the year before you did a demo on a device from orange that keeps valve's young if you will or in good condition. Do you remember what that video was called or anyone else that remembers the video?
Orange make great amps! My friend has a TinyTerror and it's a little beast! Btw, I don't think you've done a full review of the JCM800 2203? You played a pink iBanez through it once but I don't think you've done a full review of it? I've been trying to find a good review of it but I only find amateur videos of it! Could you maybe do a "Rob and Capt. Lee" review of it?
Is the EQ more responsive than the R-Verb? I find that although the R-Verb sounds cool with a matching Orange cab, sometimes is picky about being paired with other cabs and the tone stack is not powerful enough to correct that, personally.
Extremadamente versátil! Orange tienen un sonido crudísimo, para nada envasado, por lo que depende de tus dedos e interpretación hacer que suenen como tu quieras.
Rob, I feel like the NT-1A is too much on the edge of the speaker. This makes the recorded tone a bit heavy on the low-mids/bass area (especially with higher-gain tones). Some EQ could fix it but it might be better to get it right at the source. Anyway, rock on!
Great tone from that V! Hi Rob. As my RUclips name indicates, I've got a few years under my belt and am not really into the metal/shred arena. But, I have to say the V-Orange combo has to be one of the best tones I've heard you get since subbing to your channel. As an Albert King fan, I'd love to hear you try to get some blues tones from that V. Thanks for making RUclips a better place.
I'm listening to this demo on a Windows 8.1 phone. Thru whatever RUclips does to the sound. Even though I'm a purist snob, if I lowered myself to play that high rain distorted stuff and had the kind of budget I'd get one. With a hollow body guitar
Hey Rob, I'm searching for a decent Blues Rock/Stoner/Doom amp or combo and thought about buying an Orange Crush CR60C. Good choice? Or should I be looking for a tube amp? Cheers from Germany
If you're in the range for a new crush 60 try and find a used marshall dsl40, they're freaking awesome two channel all tube amps with an awesome low end and some really nice modes/features
I'm a little bummed you didn't mention the different wattage output options, was the biggest selling point to me- to bring that sound in at thirty watts and then hit a switch to bring you to a hundred, and anywhere in between was one cool ass feature in my opinion :)
Either the amp is particularly fuzzy (which I know is often the case for Orange) or it's mic'ed differently from usually. Good demo as usual, though Chappers :)
Around the 4 minute mark I felt that it was way too low mid-driven. Good amount of gain, but lacking that mid presence and good power tube breakup (I think? lol). Of course, preferences are preferences. I don't have much personal experience with Orange amps, but I know that mostly when I've heard them they have had this musical midrange snarl.
Those are some of the best sounds I've ever heard. That amp is epic. Thanks for the great videos Rob, I look forward to them every day.
Hey Rob, I cant believe how much better and smooth your playing has become in recent time. Big thumbs up ! :)
Thumbs up for Dusty ;-)
Rob the two mics look like they're not equidistant from the grill, this could be why the audio sounds a little thin. You'll hear a massive improvement if you sort the phasing issue!
Ray Syed It is a tad tiring on the ears, I'll give you that. Sure it sounds great in person, but I found it difficult to listen to the whole way through.
Ray Syed The mic's were setup fine dude, I've done this a few times before.
Rob Chapman The Rode sounds terribly boomy up close to the grill though, it sounds a lot more balanced at 2-3 feet from the cab.
Hey, my name's Dusty. Thanks for the thumbs up, Rob. That guitar should get some too. ;-)
Keep rockin
Actually, this is the first demo that shows the potential of this amp. I really don't understand all of the hate comment. ._."
Giordan Drago yeah but i hate his playing
I've been looking into these for a few months now. Your demo really showed the versatility. Will be picking one up even though they're discontinued.
And also thanks for all your videos Rob, You and Andertons as well , you guys rock i think i have watched like 30 of your videos over just the last week!!
When you switched it to channel B I just sat there and chuckled to myself, that is intense!
Yeah it's pretty amazing ;-)
this is my favorite amp, sounds better than any pedal for fuzz/distortion
Sounds amazing!!
Love the profile picture !
a truly amazing player through a truly amazing amp
It really annoys me how expensive guitar amps are, I'm stuck with my Marshall MG... :(
look in to used gear, I have a Blackstar series one 100 and it was only 600..
Haha lucky you, I'm stuck with a $200 fender
Get a Micro Terror, believe me when I say it will blow you away, both tone and volume wise.
If you get a micro terror get a 1x12 cab at least to go with it....the little 1x8 sounds really bad....wish I'd never bought that speaker
Michael Barnes I've got the 1x8, it seems to sound as small as it is.
I have this amp. It is one of the greatest sounding amps ever created.
Well done, Chappers!! Love this amp!!
I love that V Rob!! So nice! So excited!
Those tones! Good job Rob!
Man that sounds good.. Nice job Rob
Had a dark terror that was stolen
After trying the dual dark I fell in love
Just ordered one
Can't wait
Me: "Man this tone is so fluffy"
Rob: "something something fluffy pick squeal"
Nailed it.
Dam Rob sick video, tone and playing !!!! Awesome
Hey Chappers. That amp is amazing. Very good range of tones!!!!!!!!
Did you get to visit Dave's Guitar Shop over the border from Minnesota? Always worth a look through their vintage museum.
Nice job on the setting + camera work Chappers. Great product, great review :)
cheers mate I appreciate that :-)
It has plenty of gain, but from my experience using Orange amp at a live situation, especially the Dark Terror, it doesn't have enough brightness or presence to cut through the mix, even though I cut down the gain and dial the shape control to 12:30...
The amp sounds really compressed/fuzzy. I dunno if that is due to youtube or not but Orange amps are definitely an acquired taste. Although I do enjoy them for more stoner/doom/sludge styles.
RUclips compresses the shit out of videos
That's what I figured but even so from what I remember hearing them in person they still are a bit fuzzier than say a Marshall or Laney. I like em but they are suited for certain tones, though most amps are.
Yeah man thats true, but they are always a good reliable choice of amps
Oh yeah definitely, I want a Rockerverb myself one of these days. But right now I am happy with my Mesas and Marshall.
Yeah i'd love a rockerverb to, but right now im sticking with my Marshall
Love Orange! Nice Demo
ML- V
Chapman flying V signature?

I'm really, really shocked by how nice those cleans sounded on that V!
great demo work man!!

Great video! Awesome sounds!!
What would you recommend? The Dual Dark 50 or the Rockerverb 50 mkIII?
orange amps to me are just really good for layering and such in the studio. not so much as a main sound. with the exception of this thing. its pretty sick.
when i say that i mean with metal. lol. everything else they're pretty much perfect.
Lord of the Rings extended edition DVDs in the back, nice one Chappers ;)
I just gota a DD50, it's amazing! It beats the hell out of my OR50, specially in vintage tones! I can almost nail the jtm45 cranked up sag at low volumes! How does the RV50 mkiii compare to the DD50?

Are you familiar with the Thunderverb series? If so, how would you compare them to the Dual Darks? Mainly channel "A" on both
Not sure if you did something different or I'm used to Anderton's videos... or if it's the guitar... but this sounds like a solid state amp to be perfectly honest... this is coming from a huge place of respect as I love all your videos...
i remember playing that V on the back of the Dorje tour bus ! epic times man !
IDK... over $2k and seems ideal for one specific sound. Very dark and smooth.. Great tone.. but I dont see a lot of versatility.

Great review as always Rob! Would love to see a shootout between this and your Victory.

When is the ml-3 standard coming out? I'm really keen as I'm looking for a new guitar

Rob, which is the mixer/audio interface where you plug in your sm57 and large diaphgram mics?
So when you gonna make a Chapman V?
Love this amp...
A bit pricey but you get what you pay for.
Thanks for the review!
I'm listening to this demo on a Windows 8.1 phone. Thru whatever RUclips does to the sound. Even though I'm a purist snob, if I lowered myself to play that high rain distorted stuff and had the kind of budget I'd get one. With a hollow body guitar
i can see your using a Shure sm57 mic on the right, but whats the silver one on the left?
Dusty is my fav guitar in your collection Rob, I'm making a replica of it this summer. Maybe a coil tap on the tone pot.
Where are you ordering the parts off? Sounds awesome
Build my own body for free (I built my own Explorer too), Loaded pickguard from Ebay £15, Rip a neck off something when the time comes haha- done
Cool man. Wish I could make my own ahah
It's really not that hard, i'm 16 haha
I probably will in the future but too busy atm, I'd love to learn though
rob whats your opinion about the rockerverb 50 mk2? i dont have a chance to test one out.. :( is it good for chrunchy and punchy stuff?
Hey Rob, I'm searching for a decent Blues Rock/Stoner/Doom amp or combo and thought about buying an Orange Crush CR60C. Good choice? Or should I be looking for a tube amp? Cheers from Germany
Are you looking for a combo or a head? Give Randall a look up, some awesome stuff with tubes and solid state options
more combo stuff, thx dude
If you're in the range for a new crush 60 try and find a used marshall dsl40, they're freaking awesome two channel all tube amps with an awesome low end and some really nice modes/features
Great job
why does everyone say orange is 'stoner metal" it really shines in general metal/modern and death metal more
It's because it has that kind of fuzzy distortion rather than your usual ( 5150/6505/dual rec ) type of gain
The dual dark can do more 80s hair meta and thrash metal stuff to modern metal. Modern metal like machine head kse l.o.g trivium shadows fall
I'm a little bummed you didn't mention the different wattage output options, was the biggest selling point to me- to bring that sound in at thirty watts and then hit a switch to bring you to a hundred, and anywhere in between was one cool ass feature in my opinion :)
i am currently in love with the cr120 , if i had the cash and space though......
what do you use to record your amp audio into a laptop for the videos?
cool incasing of the D-T, whats the name of the company thats make such mods?:P
zilla cabs
Chappers - Thank You Sir! Love yer videos. And - ain't a Flying V a lotta fun? I had a 67 for a while... freakin' amazing ! Wish I didn't sell it.
Rob, every time you plug into an Orange- magic happens
Is the mic on the left the vocal one you demoed the other week?
That's a really cool V? What is it?
I was hearing 110% Mastodon through a lot of this. Coincidentally also the band that introduced me to Orange amps some years ago.
Is the guitar tone in this video a blend from the NT1A and 57?
Dark terror or th100? Shopping for a new amp :-)
That freaking beast is 3,600$ here in Canada (CAD). I'll stick with my dual Terror for now ;).
Awesome amp and video! Of course I'm a stoner rock guy. Cheers.
which channel would you use for cleans?
Can you get a slash tone with orange or should i just stick to Marshall
Great review btw.
was the pedal board present ? LOL love it !
Can you please review carlo robelli new york vma guitar as one of your cheap guitar review :) thanks
I really want one but I always buy more guitars
can this thing do that djent/metalcore type of heavy tone?
Hi Rob - what reverb pedal are you using?
He's using a TC hall of fame
barbel127 Yep thanks. Sent the post before finishing the vid where he called it out. Geez... :)
i really like this head. i realy want to hear it in dropped B
listen to Sumac, although the guitarist usually uses a fryette pitbull, he will use this live otherwise. although I think he tunes to drop A.
Has it got a noise gate instead of reverb then?????? ;)
Either the amp is particularly fuzzy (which I know is often the case for Orange) or it's mic'ed differently from usually.
Good demo as usual, though Chappers :)
I love Orange Amps :D

Of course, preferences are preferences. I don't have much personal experience with Orange amps, but I know that mostly when I've heard them they have had this musical midrange snarl.
Is the dark Terror 15 loud enough to gig with? Can it get above the drums?
Mark X on its own, it is not. You'll need to mic it through the venue pa if they have one.
hmmmm this or the new Rockerverb 100 mkiii...tough call!
u should have tried a guitar with active pups with this amp
what kind of tubes are in there?
PLEASE DO A ROCKERVERB MK II REVIEW!
I couldn't help but notice that rob has 2 copies of lord of the rings behind him haha
Can you use the attenuator as a volume boost?
Ah, i think you just answered my question!
nice and musical
A bit pricey but I like the sound & tone...Seems like a great metal & shred amp....
ROCK ON
Rob I seriously think you should wear the dragon onesie a lot more
