I'll tell you what, though I lost my vision back in 2007, I've seen all Ali's fights before I did get blinded. I can now listen to Ali's fights and still get enthralled. Ali is the greatest of ALL TIME! Of course; let's not forget the original "Sugar," Sugar Ray Robinson.

When you think about how hard it is to trap someone anywhere in the ring, the fact that Ali's footwork was so good and so dominant that it effectively LOCKED Patterson to the center of the ring speaks volumes. Ali in this era had no equal.

In the closing interview, it's wild to hear Ali say "I don't know if I'll still be going at the age of 31." When Ali was 31, he still had yet to have his second two Frazier fights, his Foreman fight, and all three of his Norton fights. In fact, Ali would continue to box until a month shy of his 40th birthday.

I think he said that as a way to be gracious to Patterson, who was 31 at the time. Despite talking himself up, he also praised Patterson several times during the post-fight interview. Two great champions, but Patterson just didn't have the power or size to compete with Ali. He was better suited to the smaller heavyweights of the 1950s.

Ali wasn't an early round finisher, but he was a master at accumulating points, inflicting cuts, and wearing out big hitters. The number of his late-round knockouts and the rarity of strong shots to his head were his way of pointing out that a great true boxer can beat a hitter almost every time. He made a specialty of using the last 30 seconds of each round to win it on points, helping to dig his opponent's hole which allowed him to dictate the money rounds.

@@RazorEdge2006 Who did Ali fight in the 70's? He fought only 2 decent guys before Liston, Cooper damn near knocked him out and overall he landed 10 or so left hooks to the head. Doug Jones almost floored Ali in the first round of their close fight. Both Liston fights were fixed, that's a 100% guarantee. This Patterson is crippled. The fight with Zora Folley was 100% fixed. Ali forced the head of along the ropes, badly damaging his eye, and he hardly won that fight despite that, if at all. Who does that leave? Mildenberger was the only decent guy he beat. He fought Cooper again and Cooper bled again. Brian London was a joke, and George Chuvalo was a punching bag. That's his early career. Nothing there at all. His best fight ever was the first with Frazier, then Foreman, then the 3rd with Frazier.

Stop making up bullshit excuses. Ali completely dominated and destroyed all the best heavyweights in the '60s, including hall-of-famers like Archie Moore, Henry Cooper (twice), Sonny Liston (twice), Floyd Patterson, Cleveland Williams and Ernie Terrell. No amount of bullshit excuses changes the facts.
As for that first Cooper fight, he just got a lucky punch on a very young Ali (then Clay) who hadn't hit his prime yet (1963). Cooper didn't stand a chance for the rest of their first fight, and Ali completely destroyed him in their second fight (1966). Ali was virtually untouchable in his prime years (mid-to-late 1960s).

Look in the first round as Patterson lauches a very fast attack with the hook and Ali evades it with it only grazing. The Ali that came back in the 70s, say around 72-73, that Ali would himself stand no chance against this Ali. Its literally like night and day.

To be honest I think it was 1966 when Ali was in his prime. He fought Henry Cooper. Cooper hit him with a left hook with twenty seconds left in the round. He put Ali on the seat of his pants. Ali was hurt and more then likely would have been stopped had that punch been early in the round. Angelo Dundee cut Ali's glove then telling the ref his glove was ripped. Floyd PattersonII : To be fair to the youngest and only man to ever regain the Heavyweight Title he fought, Tommy Hurricane Jackson ranked no 1 in 1957, 1958 Roy Harris Ranked No 4, Brian London No 8 and Ingemar Johansson No 1. Tom McNeely who was No 10 so he fought ranked contenders. They always give Floyd a hard time over this issue because he didn’t defend his title 5 to 6 times a year like Ali did. But all Ali opponents by 1966 only George Chuvalo and Henry Cooper we’re ranked in top 10. He fought washed up and or fighters who didn’t deserve the title shot.

This was one of Ali's most controversial fights. It was obvious from the opening bell that Patterson was overmatched, and that Ali could have easily KO'ed him. But many believed that Ali purposely allowed the fight to continue to torture Patterson for Patterson deliberately calling him "Clay."

Yes possibly. Ali was also known to give Floyd a match to help him financially. Can't back that up tho. Both moved nearly the exact same way, as they were both trained by Cus D'Amato and used his peek-a-boo boxing style. Which, as we can see, didn't give Ali any special problems. Against Tyson, Ali would have to be more cautious than he is here, but stylistically it is a nightmare matchup for Tyson, and Ali would outclass him nearly as much as he did Patterson.

This is so sad when people boo liston. He was never a bad man. He was actually extremely nice. He just was into mob work because he needed the money. He never wanted any of it.
