  • Giuseppe Verdi faced censorship from a number of authorities during his long career. He was forced to change many of his libretti because of the politics of the day. In this musical lecture Prof. Philip Gossett of the University of Chicago, general editor of "The Works of Giuseppe Verdi," reveals the largely unknown original texts of some of Verdi's greatest works. He is joined by singers from the Washington National Opera Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program. This lecture was presented by the Italian Cultural Institute in Washington at the Embassy of Italy. "The Works of Giuseppe Verdi" is a series of critical editions of Verdi's work published by University of Chicago Press with the support of the Scholarly Editions and Translations Program of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
