Honestly, when Flatline came out it was a fanboy's absolute dream having followed Sugababes since their start. To see the original 3 back together after 12 years apart was amazing. It's taken them 10 years to eventually release the album that Flatline was supposed to be on - they released it as a surprise last Christmas and that was also a massive moment for their big fans! Amazing. :o
"Flatline" is SUCH an experience when you see them do it live. Their last album, 'The Lost Tapes', is amazing... You should definitely give it a listen... I think you'd enjoy it. The girls did "Flatline" in one take... Those are the original vocals. Their harmonies are out of this world. They're so in sync with one another and so smooth.
Despite the many band member changes they've stood the test of time, they are incredible live. Highly recommend 'Too Lost In You' with the BBC orchestra, it'll blow you away! Their harmonies 🙌🏻
So 'Freak Like Me' is a mash up of Adina Howard's Freak Like Me (the words) and Tubeway Army/Gary Numan's Are Friends Electric? (the music). Was originally a bootleg produced by Richard X... who also produced Sugababes' version
IMO the Sugababes are the best female band to come out of the UK. Sugababe Mutya Buena dueted with George Michael on 'This is not real love' my favourite George duet 💜
Firstly another great reaction, seeing Americans discover British music will forever be an obsession of mine. However you not watching the videos in chronological release order really does get my left eye twitching 😩
I love that you didn't noticed all the line-up changes in those music videos.... line ups 1st and current (Flatline), 2nd (Stronger), and 3rd (Red Dress) were all present except the 4th.
There is a video on RUclips of them doing a live acoustic performance of "Flatline" for a channel called SBTV. It is absolutely INCREDIBLE. I hope you get to hear it. Their harmonies are *chefs kiss*.
There are some lovely live versions of, 'Stronger,' on RUclips which I prefer, but I absolutely love this song. I find it so empowering and it really speaks to me. Sometimes when I need some encouragement I will play it on repeat. No-one else could ever be like the Sugababes! ❤
"Freak Like Me" was produced by Richard X. It's a mashup, combining the vocal arrangement of Adina Howard's original R&B version, with the musical backing of "Are 'Friends' Electric?" by Tubeway Army. TA's leader Gary Numan went on to have a monster hit with "Cars." Gary's on record saying he really digs this version. "Red Dress" was produced by Xenomania, best known for their work with Girls Aloud. Not sure if it's a synth or a real bass saxophone (probably synth), but that's what it's supposed to be. Xenomania used the bass sax to great effect on another Sugababes single, "In The Middle" which is my favorite 'babes song.
"Easy" has one of the stranger video concepts and some of the most suggestive lyrics. "Follow me Home" is very soft and heartfelt. "Caught in a moment" is sort kind of a dramatic ballad. Funnily enough, the a capella Caught In A Moment with Siobhan rather than Heidi shows some really impressive harmonisation.
Watching these reactions had me go back into their catalogue and the title track from "One Touch" album got me crooning along again. Up there with their best tracks.
Freak like me was produced by a guy called Jason X. He specialises in mashups where he takes vocals and instrumentals from 2 genre's eg Anita Howard's freak like me (R&B) mixed with our sounds electric (electro pop). He worked with lots of UK artists in the early 2000s. My favourite track he produced was with Liberty X it's called being nobody
That would have been Richard X and not Jason X though 😉. And the song where the music here is from is called "Are Friends Electric?" by Tubeway Army/Gary Numan.
Richard X produced Freak like me! He's had 1 album, all bops! Produced some amazing pop tunes for people like Rachel Stevens, Will Young and Goldfrapp... Worth adding to your list 😊
I loved the Heidi range era of the sugababes. Saw them live numerous times along with amelle joining the group. The production on Stronger is superb 🔥 and freak like me is a great mash up that even Gary numan approved off
Another great band. We had a lot of them back then. In fact, in the early 90's I started my own band with 4 female singers and we did close harmony as well. We had to quit when we all started having kids and getting important jobs. :) Oh well, we had a great time! LJ
They really are amazing. I seen them live in May this year and it was one of best concerts I’ve been to. Other songs you should check out include Run For Cover, Caught In A Moment, Shape, Denial, Change, Follow Me Home (Mutya Version) 🤩
I'm so happy to see another Sugababes review!! FYI, the video to "Freak Like Me" uses the alternate "We Don't Give a Damn Mix" remix. I much prefer the album version. It was also the first video to feature newcomer Heidi Range. "Red Dress" was re-recorded with Amelle replacing Mutya when Mutya left the group after experiencing post-natal depression. I'd LOVE to hear the original recording with Mutya!! The music video for "Flatline" was filmed in Venice Beach. I LOVE all of the songs you reviewed in this video!
I'm curious, which version do you prefer? I heard Mutya's version first and always prefered hers, but also partly because I never particularily liked Amelle 😅 and thought her voice didn't fit the songs that were written with Mutya in mind. Many others say they prefer Amelle's version because that's what they are used to, and Mutya hated the song and they say you can absolutely hear that she did not want to sing it in her version (I don't hear it though xD).
If i was in the crowd of a Sugababes concert,i would be seen with a sign that says: "Im that roughneck brotha,Heidi!" 😍😏I think the producers you are asking for was Mass Order on Freak Like Me. They produced for alot of different artists back then. I dont know awhole lot more about them, but i seem to remember it being a team. Pinch me if im wrong. Stronger is defintly amongst my favourites, they had a way of taking lead,to then back eachothers lead vocals up. Red Dress instantly gave me the disco vibes when it dropped. Just the disco bowl spinning in the roof, missing! I always found every member that has been in Sugababes super charming, attractive but everytime Heidi comes sliding up front, and starts singing.... pheeeew! Shes my KryptoniteBabe Sadly she left in 2011,but on the bright side, the founding member Heidi came in to replace was ready to re-join Sugababes, and has been a member every since,in Siobhán Donaghy. So in a sad but beautiful way,the original lineup has been back since 2012. If you ask me though, there would have been a spot for both Heidi and Siobhàn. But apparently there was a minor feud at one point and they went separate ways, but both Keisha and Mutya has explained that they have met up with Heidi afterwards, and there is no bad blood,so its always good to know that they buried whatever they had going on. Funfact is that every member has had theyr "temporary" replacement in this band. Still, there is few bands i hear of where the original lineup actually finds back together. So Sugababes is a rare case there, and well worth appreciating for just that. We know how Take That had a similar thing going on with Robbie Williams, wich turned out to be Robbie shying away from the members, because he thought he wouldnt be well received amongst the guys, and Gary Barlow still thought that Robbie was mad at him lol. If they just had better communications right? Good communication can save relationships and bands from breaking up/departing and friendships from being lost. Us listeners of theyr music often forget how much of an pressure it can be to tour together the entire year, and spend time recording albums together for most of a year,so that band members go on eachothers nerves is actually quite common. Because it doesnt seem like most actually talk with eachother right away, instead they step on egg shells around eachother until they cant take it anymore.
Red dress indeed has horns in the back, as it samples the 1960’s jazz song Landslide by Tony Clark. Red dress has 2 different chorusses, thats why it sounds so unpredictable
Sitting here listening to sugar babies and seeing u smile so much puts a big smile on my face. Plz do more boy bands like blue or five. Or have u tried a group called pj & Duncan aka ant and Dec. They are famous British TV presenters but started a band in the 90s called pj& Duncan there most famous song is called let's get ready to rumble 😁😁😁 it's brilliant ❤❤
This is fun too see. Xenomania produced it. They did most of Girls Aloud too and the groups were around at the same time, from 2000-2010 both were on top in the UK, and Sugababes were big Europe too.
Love this vid!!!! On the next one please do About You Now, Hole In The Head, Caught In A Moment and Easy. Also, make sure you get the full videos. Due to all the line up changes, some of their vids weren't uploaded fully on their official channel which is why Red Dress and Too Lost In You both end abruptly.
It is, and that was the whole point of the song. It's a mash up of the melody of that song and the lyrics from another song (Freak Like Me by Adina Howard). It was "the thing" by that specific producer, Richard X, in the early 00s. He did bootleg the mash up which was fairly known in the club scene back then and where it started to take off, but he wasn't able to clear the sample of Adina singing it for commercial release, so he looked for other vocalists to sing it instead and landed on the Sugababes.
I hadn't heard the newer track Flatline back to the original line up of the group and the vocals sound sooooo good. Yeah I always liked freak like me and stronger is a good break up song, I never really liked red dress, the song didn't hit like their other songs it was their last line up of the group and the shortest that still included an original member. But love the original ladies are back together after starting out when they were 16years old, such talented writers and singers I wouldn't go as far as to say grunge, but a lot of their songs have pop with a bit of grit
Absolutely find time to react to Sugababes live version of Caught In A Moment (They were called MKS at that point due to a legal fight for the name). Siobhan Donaghy is unbelievable on it... They all are!
Look at you making my weekend!!! Always trying to be front and centre for my Sugababes so thanks for this. *Stronger* | third single from SB's second album Angels with Dirty Faces (2002); reached #7 on the UK Singles Chart. It received mixed reviews from critics but that doesn't matter to me, I still like it. *Flatline* | so this was SB's first single with the original line-up in 12 years and I think they absolutely killed it, so I'm not surprised it's one of your faves out of the bunch. Upon release it received acclaim from music journalists for its production and vocal harmonies. The song charted at #50 on the UK Singles Chart and #14 in Ireland. It's included on their Lost Tapes album, released in December 2022. Freak Like Me isn't really for me and I get why Red Dress isn't really for you either; Amelle as part of the trio does much better with material meant for SB 3.0 and not when she's singing Mutya's parts rofl. Please react to Sugababes - Red Dress (with Mutya on vocals, no official video though), Caught in a Moment, About You Now, and Girls.
Here are some live performances of these songs from last month. They also sang Stronger but it was cut from the broadcast. Thank you for doing this. The three original singing all the hits is the version you can get and even Red Dress sounds perfect with the 3 of them. ruclips.net/video/tOgRlYpyuHI/видео.html Freak Like Me ruclips.net/video/Aohkqr-zHDE/видео.html Red Dress ruclips.net/video/3jcfaQ_pFsk/видео.html Flatline
The sample keyboards on Freak Like Me is from Tubeway Army's (Gary Numan's band) Are 'Friends' Electric, a song about a calling an android prostitute to your apartment.
Girls Aloud then THIS? You spoil us!! I think Sugababes are my favourite act of all time. I won't get into the limeup thing, but I'm thrilled the OGs are doing the thing ag
LOVE the Sugababes, so happy to see this reaction. I don't know if you are familiar with the group Groove Armada but you should check out "Song For Mutya" to hear Mutya singing lead vocal on a fun, funky track: ruclips.net/video/FY5NYBRMurk/видео.html
Glad you're loving Sugababes. They've always been one of my favourite girl groups, or at least their first two incarnations and their current, which of course is the original line up of Mutya, Keisha and Siobhan again, who've always been my favourites. Sugababes 2.0. (with Heidi replacing Siobhan) had the most big hits for the group. Some of their best songs are from then. Sugababes 3.0. (with Amelle replacing Mutya) had some catchy songs but, for me anyway, they started to move away from their distinctive sound and style and went too formulaic, too generic sounding. By the time Keisha was replaced by Jade (Sugababes 4.0.) it was no longer anything like Sugababes, with no original members left and some really bland, generic dance pop that sounded so unoriginal. Nothing like the creative, edgy pop of old! Plus, by then the group was seen as a laughing stock because of all the line-up changes and they weren't really taken that seriously anymore. The final line up only released one album and a further single and then just disappeared, never officially splitting up but they had really. Thank goodness the three original ladies, Mutya, Keisha and Siobhan decided to get back together and make more wonderful music! Flatline was the first release and I think it's brilliant. I'm sure you've already read all the info about the following decade, from 2013 to now, and all the trouble the girls had trying to get the name Sugababes back (they had to call themselves MKS until then) but so glad they did. It took a decade for the album they recorded in 2013 to finally be released (The Lost Tapes) but it was worth the wait, in my opinion. Of course lots of rough demos of those songs have been leaked online for years but it's great to finally hear the finished versions and have the finished album. I just hope we don't have to wait another decade to get their next album, lol! I'm sure we won't. They've been doing lots of concerts over the past year and have been in the studio too. I saw them in concert in 2013 (when they were called MKS or simply Mutya, Keisha, Siobhan) and they were fantastic. Those harmonies are second to none! I really recommend listening to The Lost Tapes. There's some great songs on there. Of their old songs with the various line ups, I recommend (if you haven't heard them already) Run For Cover, Caught In A Moment, Hole In The Head, In The Middle, Soul Sound, About You Now, Change and Denial! :)
Well, in no offense to 4.0, majority of the material was recorded WITH an original member: Keisha, so we cannot blame Jade's arrival for the sound (not saying you are, btw).
I find the video version of Freak Like Me a bit limp. The version that appears on the album hits much harder. I hope you'll find time to do more Take That album reactions in future, by the way. 🙂
Love these reactions 💞 I much prefer "Red Dress" live - see below link for recent performance at the Isle of Wight Festival: ruclips.net/video/Aohkqr-zHDE/видео.html This was the first live TV performance of "Flatline" - the harmonies are perfecton: ruclips.net/video/8OQKWsc3-Sg/видео.html Finally, the Reload sessions are all amazing, but for something different, I would love to see you react to their cover of Lorde's "Royals": ruclips.net/video/5I7wdelUIOo/видео.html
I love that you're exploring all the British girl groups. I feel like we were spoiled for great pop songs in 90s - 00s! 🙂

"Run For Cover", "In The Middle" and "New Year": three underappreciated singles from a iconic girl group shining through every incarnation 🌟

Omg was trying to figure where I’ve heard that tune before? Gary Numan, that’s the one! 👍🏼
Stronger❤❤❤❤my fave sugababes hit. Please listen to, caught in the moment, soul sound, walk this way(with girls aloud), push the button.❤❤
Stronger is one their best songs, in my opinion and Flatline is one of their most underrated. Dying for them to release a new album!
LOVE Stronger! ❤
Newer than The Lost Tapes? lol
@@eskayh7734 The Lost Tapes were songs recorded years ago! I want some new material.
IMO the Sugababes are the best female band to come out of the UK. Sugababe Mutya Buena dueted with George Michael on 'This is not real love' my favourite George duet 💜
I’m going to just say it ‘Stronger’ is in my top 3 tracks of the late 90’s/early 00’s. It makes my skin smoke.
further proof nobody does girl groups better than the UK. Sugababes had the midas touch making top quality pop music. Plus great videos.
What a selection of tracks! Grunge pop is a good genre name for Freak Like Me, especially since people not into pop seem to like that song.

Flatline was released last 2013 by the original Sugababes (MKS at that time) and the video had million views before it was re-uploaded last year.
Flatline was filmed on Venice Beach in LA I believe
Very cool that you reacted on more songs by Sugababes. These tracks portray the diversity of their sound rather well.
freak like me the music is a sample of Tubeway Army song "are friends electric"

The music on Freak Like Me is pretty much lifted whole from Are Friends Electric by Tubeway Army from 1979.

The original Red Dress with Mutya’s vocals flow a lot better.
Agree, I never listen to Amelle's version ever 😂. Though I think a lot of people don't share that sentiment 😄
Sugar Babes/Freak Like me sampled Gary Numan's Are Friends Electric
Girls Aloud then THIS? You spoil us!! I think Sugababes are my favourite act of all time. I won't get into the limeup thing, but I'm thrilled the OGs are doing the thing ag
When the Rain Comes? Pretty please?
Yeah the Red Dress video cut off due to a bad upload, however the chorus only comes up twice in the song like Kylie's Padam.
LOVE the Sugababes, so happy to see this reaction. I don't know if you are familiar with the group Groove Armada but you should check out "Song For Mutya" to hear Mutya singing lead vocal on a fun, funky track:

Freak like me is the greatest song of its time and ahead of its time even though it's made up of old songs. Richard X is a genius
Please do "Run For Cover" next time, its my favorite Sugababes song
A few more sugestions.: Easy (quite similar to Red Dress, just (imo) a bit sexier), About You Now, Hole In The Head, In The Middle, Today.
I’m reacting to all of their albums 😊
Sir Shmallow. Is it time for p3?
Round Round is a banger cheek it out.

You should watch some live stuff…. But make sure it’s the reformed original 3 and not any other incarnation of the group….
Love these reactions 💞 I much prefer "Red Dress" live - see below link for recent performance at the Isle of Wight Festival:

This was the first live TV performance of "Flatline" - the harmonies are perfecton:

Finally, the Reload sessions are all amazing, but for something different, I would love to see you react to their cover of Lorde's "Royals":

Thank you!
Listen, The Lost Tapes, Back to Life, I’m just saying hah
Anything after 2005 isn't really worth it, once Mutya left they went down the pan. Her replacement was beyond awful live, real struggle city.
I think Catfights and Spotlights was a very good album. They just chose the completely wrong singles for that album.
Atomic kitten and I can Die
@10:23 "As you should." 😭🤣🤣 Also. It looks like they are in LA in the last video.
