Great video. This one stands out from all the others in that it covers failure points and what you need to be looking for in a fix. The discussion on the 2000 - 2004 wobble starting at 4:50 was particularly helpful. Many thanks Lyle.
SO glad you explained the T bracket. I was about to do the repair today but noticed my kit didn't include the bracket. Almost went ahead with the install thinking it was just a "nice to have" type of thing until you pointed out it's purpose. Wish I saw this video before I bought my kit. Luckily there are companies that sell just the T bracket. Thank you so much
I use a 2 part urethane bumper repair patch/adhesive. They have never failed. Be sure to clean both surfaces so they are free of oil. I enjoy your videos.
Hey Lyle hope ur recovering well after the hurricane. My problem is right before i moved to florida from long island NY I had my mechanic replace both my headlight motors. We couldnt get the brass ones simply because of timing with the move so we just replaced with the plastic ones. My issue is now I’m here and don’t know a trustworthy mechanic yet and when i turn off the headlights i think its the passenger side keeps grinding after they are down. Is there a way to adjust them before they end up stripping on me.
I have a 99 Coupe and the right side light operates for about 5 uses and then will not come up but the light comes on. I do not hear any grinding during the operations of the headlight unit going up or down in fact no grinding at all. If I use the manual adjustment to bring it up it works fine again for about 5 times and I have to repeat that process. Also I have notice that this headlight unit is slower to come up and down that the left side. Is this a motor/gear issue or the control module IYP? Great videos BTW I think I have watched all your C5 videos and they have given me confidence to tackle some projects on my own!
Garrett, If your motor isn't making a bunch of noise, I would be suspect of the module. If the motor does make noise after openingand closing, I would recommend a rebuild of that unit. Lyle
Lyle great video, did mine a couple years ago and my passenger works great although I have notice my drivers side closes about 3/4 of the way then just drops with a thud. Took it off today and brass gear looks good but can't figure it out. Any idea ? Put it back on and same thing. Almost shut then drops with a thud from weight. Lost on this one.
Brass gears are a problem because they never break--they cause failures in other parts of the headlight motor. If it is dropping, either the worm gear or the actuator arm is damaged. Lyle
@@csvette thank you sir, that's what I was thinking, was playing around with it last night and it will get to a point where you can turn it manually a good 10 rotations before it starts to move again and that's when it just drops.
@@csvette it is the worm gear I found out. Arm moves as it should but brass gear get to a point on worm gear where I can pick my light up a good inch without anything moving. I'm thinking worm gear must have a really worn spot in it where it's not meeting other gear smoothly
Need a bit of help , can’t figure it out . Put new metal gear in passenger side headlight motor, stopped grinding but still runs on when I close them and it does it when I open them as well, took those motors apart like 5 times , looks good but runs on . Also when I turn my driving lights on headlights come up . Can’t figure it out
You have at least 2 issues: First, your white stops that provide end points for headlight travel are worn or missing. Second, you have a problem with your multifunction switch on your column--if lights are coming up when the park lamps are turned on, it is most likely an internal fault in your turn signal multifunction switch. Lyle
I have a 98 corvette and the passenger headlight was making the buzzing noise for a week or 2 than the headlights just got stayed up, it doesnt go down with the switch but I can put it down manually, can I still fix it by replacing the gear or would it be best to replace the whole motor? And also would a 2000-2004 headlight motor work on my 1998?
Rebuilding both headlights is the first step. The early motors like yours are actually much better than the plastic bodied units from the later C5;s, so I would stick with what you have and just make sure the gears and the white stops on the travel-limiting studs are fresh. That should be all you need to do. Lyle
how do you fix drivers headlight that wont pop up,already changed motor,i tested motor of car before i installed it,its brand new,i installed it plugged in wires.headlight turn on,but drivers side wont pop up,do you have a solution,Thanks
MAke sure the white plastic stops are in good shape. If so, you may need to look at replacing your headlight control module behind the RH headlight bulb.
Brass gears are not a good idea. They will NEVER wear out or break...that sounds like a great thing, but in this system is really isn't. Why? Because that plastic gear is the fail-safe in the system--the sacrificial lamb. If your headlight has a problem or gets jammed, the plastic gear will take the hit and save your headlight motor. If you use the brass gear and that situation occurs, the motor itself is going to take the damage and cost you a whole lot more than a plastic replacement gear. Lyle
@@csvette i see, so it's more of a case of what you would rather have eventually break? And in this case, better to get the OEM plastic gear, and just have to replace it every xx,xxx miles, than have to do the whole assembly. Makes sense. Thanks Lyle!
3M body panel epoxy will glue that plastic cover down....ask me how I know Better to buy the cardones with the removable cover....and yes....brass gears !!!!
Could be one or more of several things...Headlight Control Module, Multifunction Switch on the steering column, blown fuse....Start with the basics and make sure that power and signal are getting to the headlights themselves. Lyle

I purchased your gear wheel and putting on the brace, but don’t know what to do with the plastic and brass washers as well as the spacer.

My fault, put internal part in wrong spot , put spacer on top instead of the back , all good now , works great , thanks for your time and response 👍

Glue to use 3m 2part black epoxy
I’ve used it in auto body for years
So strong it takes an angle grinder to take off
I just bought a kit, do I need to put epoxy on it with the bracket or an I good just with the bracket?
You can rely on the bracket alone. Lyle
Hey does anyone know we're I can buy this kit for a 04 c5 thanks in advance for any input
Have 1998 corvette, motors good, replaced gear with brass, new switch on column. Lights go up but won't come down, can you help me please.
Steve, you need to contact whoever sold you the brass gears for help. Lyle

I know I need brass gears, but is there a certain brand or type to look for that is most often used?

2:00
Yah...microphone went funky for a sec.
Wild, rebuild kit for $50...or new motor for $50.
Yeah, new CHinese motor--you won't like that unit, trust me. Lyle
No music please.
We used that introduction only once or twice before moving to a much shorter one. Lyle
@@csvette Yes, I jumped the gun. Keep up the your great work on C5's.
