  • In this video I tear down my BMW engine. I do this to try and get a better sense of what failed. I do this on my E90 335i with the N54 engine.
    Have you ever wondered what the inside of an engine looks like and how to take one fully apart? You can see the entire process in this video.
    The engine has about 200K miles on it and I show the condition of it after all these miles. I show you all the components.
    I hope to eventually build this engine with aftermarket internals to make it stronger than stock.
    If this is the first video you are catching of mine please consider subscribing. I upload regularly.
    Thanks for watching :) When you see the word "affiliate" listed beside any link in my description please know that this is a custom link and I will earn a small commission if you opt to purchase using said link. This is at no extra cost to you so it's a win all around :) Thank you!

    If i was you, id rebuild that engine and push it to the absolute limits, getting those forged internals is definitely a good start. Imagine how good ud feel with an engine that is too overpowered and another one as spare waiting for it to blow up, id definitely give to a go fund me, you are a great person!

    Do a single turbo build! I'd love to see you shoot for 700, which is pretty "easy". Check out Jafromobile's (youtube) engine build series, you'll learn *a lot* about measuring clearances and etc. on a turbo engine build. Plastiguage is a "did I totally screw it up?" kind of check, not "Is it right?" - it's a check, not a measurement. At this point, you probably just need a micrometer to properly measure your bearing clearances and a couple more install tools, and you can totally assemble it yourself. The block and head sent to a machine shop to be hot tanked, checked over, and decked. Check out subi performance's N54 build that started Dec 26 2020 to see what sort of measurements to rods and pistons you need to be doing. You can get a shop to measure and assemble them for you. If you can really swing it, get the deck closed like what ABR or ghassan do - it's just a plate with coolant holes pressed into the block and decked flat to keep your bores from wobbling. I wouldn't want to cheap-out on rods or pistons without some assurance of quality and strength.
    I bet your clearances for each bearing weren't correct in one dimension, and spun under load when the oil got squished out and you had metal-on-metal. Grooves in bearings "just get filled with oil," but that groove allows oil to be evacuated from the bearing surface under load - so possibly worse than a raised surface! Cam ledge grooves didn't cause your rod to spin - just wore out your cam bearings faster - unless you suspect any shavings that may have been creating from the cams migrated into the rod bearings and were large enough to gouge either surface.

    If you had the non turbo version (N52) like mine then I'd say sure, cut and oversize is fine, but on yours I would certainly replace the crank all together, and I would take that guy up on those rods too. Also those cam trays, but I would be more okay with trying to polish that out a bit, but you can't do much. Worse case scenario, you have to go back in to replace the tray, but you can do it easily in car at that point. Some say the road to more power starts with the crank. Nice video, would love to see this grow into a nice build.

    2 Vanos Filters (check valves) are still in it... left side of engine near the front, two recessed round plugs one on top of the other with torx holes in them. People often change Vanos solenoids, but do not know about these filters and leave them there, gunked up. They can be easily changed by hand feel or using mirror, without any disassembly.

Keep in mind the other upgrades for reliability. More power=broken parts. Traction is always going to be huge issue with the power you put out. Logically speaking, I dont see how those cam trays would have contributed to the engine spinning a bearing. I think all the new parts you replaced, coupled with the new bearings etc had something to do with it. Something was most likely out of spec
    Just caught the last part of the video, I definitely think you're right putting the blame on those bearings.

    • @alexeimaterov3226
      @alexeimaterov3226 3 года назад

      Even with the right sized bearings, if you torque the caps too tight there wont be enough clearance for oil. If things haven't changed since I last rebuilt an engine, you'd normally torque everything to spec using the new bearings and use a crush gauge to check clearance. I wouldn't trust anyone except OEM in terms of specs and tolerance.

    • @gregh7457
      @gregh7457 2 года назад

      @@alexeimaterov3226 i used kolbenschmidt bearings on my build but i polished the crank myself until it was very shiny. I had no machine work done on the used crank i bought off ebay and my clearances were on the loose side of the specs. I put in a brand new oil pump also. I've put 12k miles on it and its still holding. I feel that bmw bearing specs are too tight which is causing the majority of these spun bearings. Add into the mix a worn out oil pump with 200k miles or miscalibrated torque wrench or the king bearings were fake china specials but we'll never know the real reason why it failed but seeing that all the other bearings have damage, I'de put my money on a worn oil pump and too tight bearing clearances.. I'de love to see him do a rebuild with aftermarket bearings and stock rods, just replace the 1 rod. Ah... i just finished watching his rod bearing install video and i believe he was doing the torque sequence wrong. He did 2 70 degree torque's when he should have only done 1. I'de say those rod bolts failed because they were overtorqued

    I think you're getting to the correct conclusion. It seems too coincidental that you replaced the rod bearings, shortly after you spin a rod bearing. And in that short time they don't look great. Something was not right, I believe you plasti gauged them but that is at best a crude check in my experience and doesn't account for out of roundness or other factors. I don't think those cams and trays had anything to do with it. That being said my vote is for a 'budget' rods and pistons rebuild and see where it can go. There is lots of talk about it but no one really seems to do it and document it, you could. Till then keep up the good work.

    I would like to see a full built motor. I just got a new daily and I am thinking about ripping out my n54 and would like to see someone who knows what they are doing complete it first.

    Seems like others have had problems with King bearings. Cam bearings (and a couple of cam lobes?) looked scored. Cam trays need to be new, evidently.
    You could have the head ported by headgames, go to the Mahle 9.5:1 low compression pistons ands Shrick cams and a closed block plate, but then you are in real bucks. But with stock head, there is not much room for improvements. Also, for street performance and longevity, eutectic pistons seem better than forged or cast. If you use forged pistons, you must be religious about achieving full operating temperature before you roll an inch out of your driveway.
    You should set a budget for your build. If you do not go towards $10K, might as well keep it like it is with new stock components.

    I say build it with max speeding rods, a lot of us want to build our engines but we’re on a budget and we’d love to see other companies that we can actually trust that’s not gonna break the bank

    Maxspeeding rods are unbelievably good at their pricepoint. Finnish RUclipsr Pazi88 uses them on his +600hp turbobuilds without any problems. I'd go with them

    Get the rods, its content and atleast well know if there any good. As long as it's good material and balanced what's the issue??

    I think you should build a bad a$$ engine with upgraded internals, make it bullet proof. Go single turbo and don’t be afraid to start a go fund me, you make bad a$$ content that we love to see!

    Please please please do the main bearings while you are there, OEM bearings, and I concur the clearance was too tight

    Wow definitely not touching my rod bearings, unless absolutely have to. It would be cool to see you do a fully built motor, hopefully you can land some decent sponsors to be able to!

      Yeah that's going to be my advice, I actually said that in the past in comments but ended up changing them out when my oil pump chain let go. I wouldn't have touched them proactively. Seems like only high revving motors need them changed out for maintenance.

    Please, please do another video where you rebuild it with the new forged rods! I fully agree that this video will be a source of truth. Also, proceed with OEM bearings is better.
