Jazmine is one of the greatest voices that has ever walked the planet. Period.
Periodt
Definitely agree there is not one person that I can think of that sounds this appealing with all these runs and power behind her voice. Def the goat!!!!!
PurrrrrriodT
Absolutely, she should be as big as Bey. I actually prefer Jasmine’s voice over Bey 🥶
@@pariscapri1594 who mentioned... okay
Jazmine is 100% a jazz vocalist. The rock sound in her voice is rooted in jazz, the enunciation is rooted in jazz, the way she runs is rooted in jazz. Her old stuff (mostly her EPs and indie releases) are pure jazz.
Facts on facts on facts. 💯💯💯
Her choices, her language, her approach to song form - all Jazz rooted. She states her melody then builds 😩🙌🏾 and i STAN!!!!!
She put the Jaz in jazz. My friend and I had an agreement about her; is she a jazz singer or R&B singer.
And don't forget gospel, that's where she got her start
YES!! I always want to listen to Cecile McLorin Salvant after a Jazmine Sullivan deep dive
I think the "stank face" is universal when we hear somebody SANG!! Thank you for the video!
Truly🎯😂
Exactly. When it resonates and you connect with the notes, run etc...here comes the stank face.
Good assessment. 😊
That face is the best compliment a musician can give another musician
Yes indeed!!!!! The stank face always says it all.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yassss. I see Jazmine I click. Thank you Sam for taking the time to provide your expertise on one of my favorite artists
Same
Me too!
😂😂 me too
Right.
I just love her voice. It's never boring, but also never overdone.
Well Said!!!!
"Gosh those plants are awesome."
Agree
At this moment I was like: WHAT? lol
You need a Grammy based upon your vocal analysis reactions. They are always entertaining, informative, and intriguing.

I cried laughing as you explained "Feelings" vs "Feelans"🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hahahhhahah
Me too!!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 “it would just sound crazy”
I'm glad he eventually mentioned the jazz influences. Historically, the African & African-American voice and tone was untrained; we just sang, lol. Most of the stylistic choices, especially in Jazz, came from imitating instruments, which explains riffs/runs/rasp/scatting. Even that low growl, the use of the jaw and the use of the throat come from "just sanging", lol. Of course, Jazmine is intentional.
That's true most of us grew up in the church at a young age and I think them forcing us to sing 6x each service is somewhat our training 😭
@@suchafknladyyy 6x a service 🤣🤣🤣🤣 baby if u grew up in a black church u gon learn to hold some kinda note u aint got no choice!!
@@suchafknladyyy africans when brought to America weren't allowed in church... But STILL they could SANG!!!!
JAZMINE IS THE ONE. Whew. Don’t make no damn sense to sing this good!
Truly.
And that's that on that.
Yes Ma'am ❤️💪🏾💯
AMEN!
Right!!
You can’t help but feel Jazmine’s vocals. She kills those runs. The hair on my arms just stands up!! Nasty!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
ME TOO!
Chills like no other vocalist!
Jazmine Sullivan is my favorite singer and I just want to give mad props to the background singers. Whew!! Loved your reaction to this performance.
😂😂😂😂 I am VERY familiar with that stank face Sam did at 6:09 whenever I listen to Jazmine Sullivan. Please listen to her live version of Let it Burn. I think you'd like that song, Sam
You know what's crazy? After her Aretha Tribute and the whole audience was giving that face, I have noticed EVERY performance she does makes the audience sick with the "you better sing."
@@SlimothyCricket YASSS I can't believe I forgot that one 😭😭😭
Hahaha! Me too! I always make a stank face listening to Jazmine. I love her so much. One of my favourite vocalists ever ever.
It's impossible to listen to this without making that face
Lol it surprised him mid thought too 😂😂
Jazmine Sullivan is a metal vocalist, confirmed.
Not at all, she’s a jazz vocalist through and through
How?
🤣 I see what you did there.
@@MrChicogotti Dont be so serious lol
I bet there is one video of her her singing a metel song at karaoke 🎤 😂
I love the way that you talk about Jazmine’s stylistic ‘choices’ .. a lot of ppl get harped up on technical prowess, but can’t discern ‘vocal musicianship’ or ‘interpretive wit’ ..the way singers use different vowel modulations,
vocal fry, distortion, air, larynx positioning to manipulate the color and texture of the pitch to give character to a certain note/phrase. I call it having an ‘ear’.. a coach may warn against dropping the larynx when stretching down into the lower chest, but as a stylistic choice some do this to create extra space that add this brooding, darkness to those notes that give it depth.. intent and moderating matters
🗿
👍
@@honz42kk thank you for this. i feel like there’s a bunch of wannabe vocal coaches on youtube yelling at someone for their “bad technique” when it’s really an intentional choice
She sends chills through my body!!! Look how she has him shaking his head.. .he's definitely impressed 😁
She's a legend! Her voice is a treasure and she doesn't need to go beyond any note to prove it.. 🎼 Really glad you made this video!
I love her low notes with the dropped larynx it gives a different color texture than the rest of her belty range and mid range notes. She is really a coloratura.
She put the stank on this song another vocal coach called them intentional vocals. That’s where soul meets r&b. It’s literally a song about sending her man on his way cause she don’t need him
Ladies and gentlemen there is a difference between a voice teacher and a vocal coach. KNOW WHICH ONE YOU NEED!!!!
Yes sir. That's true.
Very true!!
Oh thanks! I needed that!
Maybe you could please just give a brief description of each to help those who would read your comment but don't know what each term means.
She's out of this world
LADIES AND GENTLEMAN IN OTHER WORDS.. JASMINE IS SINGING WITH ( SOUL) that's how you describe her sound... Js...💯💯💪🏾💪🏾
I know!! He said EVERYTHING BUT THAT
Right because he acting like he don't wanna give her .. her props . He to busy looking at plants in the background
I swear I thought I was the only one who thought he was struggling to put his finger on it but u can’t describe this greatness jus know she BODIED this SHIT🙌🏾❤️
@@deangelosimpkins5781 exactly. That's why I don't watch his videos he just makes my head head hurts listening to him complaining about artists who can actually sing unlike him and been in the game longer than he was born .
Let em know! That cannot be taught.
Larynx drop sound... I would describe as: giving more body, deeper. In French, we say: du coffre.
Jazmine is The GOAT!! THIS SONG SNATCHED MY SOUL and released every pain I've ever experienced. She's even better live. The only artist that reaches my pain this way is Laila Hathaway
Man when she hit that high note and low bass drop out u made the stank face....I LIVE for that kinda reaction man. Jaz really the GOAT!
She is a legend and this was one of the more detailed reviews I've watched so far. Glad this video was suggested. ❤
Shes not a legend YET! But she is definitely a force to reckon with.
Her performance of this at the Soul Train Awards is amazing! Her voice is insaneeeeee😭 4:15 is my favourite part of it
When you sang feelINGS, I was dying laughing lol 😂😭😌
Lmao! Me too!!
Me too and I'm more upset that's how I sound over here singing 🤣🤣
Sam react to Chloe x Halle Tiny Desk Concert, please!!!
YES!!!!
Yessss a million times!
I loved this performance!....And the commentary makes me want to research to understand jazz better.
The best description is SOULLLL oh that’s that soul baby
She definitely lives up to her name. Her style is very jazzy and soulful. I love it.
Fellow singer and vocal coach from Germany here. Just wanted to say that I really appreciate the work you're doing! The judgement free criticism and explanations you offer are top notch... I honestly can't find a video where I don't understand your angle with anything you say (though I - as someone that also works with the help of some CVT and Estill- might use different terminology). Have actually thought about buying a lesson with you just to chat about experiences with students :D...Keep it up! This is a channel I can recommend to my students without feeling apprehensive about it.
🙏❄️
This woman is so underrated! Absolutely one of the best singer's of our time.
Idk about underrated. Everyone who encounters her understands that she’s a legendary vocal beast. But she’s definitely under-appreciated
Noone can sing like this ..this comes from her soul
I don’t sing or anything I just love watching you get excited watching these talented voices. It’s so beautiful to see and hear 😍
Watching him watch her is pure joy he’s FEELING IT! Thats what you gotta do feel it.
Jazmine Sullivan and Sam Johnson - two of my favourite people.
i am SOO excited to watch this! I absolutely adore Jazmine Sullivan, she's one of my favorite vocalists she's so skilled.
Lemme just drop my feelings from now to pick them up later
She's soulful , sultry and jazzy I love her music and voice to the moon and back. She's amazing i tell it like i see it. Awesome singer in a class all by her self.❤❤❤🌟🌟🌟🔥🔥🔥🙏
'Gosh, those plants are awesome' literally me when I first saw this video. So aesthetically pleasing for a plant lady... plus Jazmine obvs.
Wonderful analysis but my favorite line comes at 5:15... "Gosh those plants are awesome" 😂🤣🤣😂😂. They are, tho!!!
Sam has reacted to (IMO) the two best vocal performances of 2020: Jazmine Sullivan - Pick Up Your Feelings and JoJo - Pretty Wings. Taste.
When you said they’re not saying “FEELIIIIIIINGS” lmao I died 😂😂😂😂
Yass, Sam! 🎉🎉🎉😁🙌🏿🤸🏿♀️ I literally screamed and ran round my room in Scotland UK 🤣🤣 I'm SO SO HAPPY you reviewed her! Thank you. You breaking it down is so helpful. This performance blows my mind 🤯 and now I can practice small things safely 😁🙌🏿
Watching Sam react to Jazmine makes me so happy 😭🥰
Should react to her singing Home in The Wiz when she was 11.
**With a mouthful of braces.
Right!!
Jazmine voice is 🔥🔥 but let's talk about the background singers vocals! 👌🔥🔥
I saw her live and she reaalllyyy emphasizes them. Talent has to complement if you gonna stand up behind her 😂
Wow, love your appreciation for the performance acumen as well as the technical. I’m a fan!
Thank you for mentioning the idea that there's a tonal component to pitch. First time I hear it explained like that and it's simply and clearly put.
"Feelin's"
That's just how we sing. We talk like that too.
The jaw thing. Watch any gospel choir from the 90's. It's just one the ways we sing. Jazmine grew up singing in the church.
well yeah i’m sure he knows that, but he’s explaining how we do it physiologically and the reason it works
@@aaronnewman7573 right lol
Exactly lmao. It's funny to watch ppl try to explain us to us lmao. How arrogant, but I guess he means well lmao
@@jasminethomas1054 he’s a vocal coach this is his job😭
@@jasminethomas1054 he wasn’t...
So I guess I'll comment on how Jaz is unbothered killing it all while sitting down. Kinda surprised he didn't mention how sitting increases the difficulty of producing such a well rounded performance.
Her song came up while I was doing DIY’s and listening to music. I loved it and stopped to play it again and added it to my playlist. This song is a anthem.
THE DESCRIPTION IS SOUL !!! it's when u dont care about the technique but just sing from ur pain, joy or whatever else
8:20 thank you for this because a lot of people like to downplay people’s vocal prowess just because of their jaw moving when they run😭
❤️ Thank you! Loooooong over due! Jazmine does not get enough air play! She's amazing! Check out KeKe Wyatt too ❤️
💯🎯‼
You singing 🗣🎤 FEELIIIINGS! had me rolling in the floor laughing.
On that first run we had the same reaction lol. Love your commentary
It definitely feels like the sound moves more into her throat in her lower range. I've always wondered if her fast vibrato is a large reason for her agility?
This performance is one of my favorites because she's so comfortable. She's showing emotion, but the singing isn't strained. 👏
That’s what another vocal coach on RUclips was saying! So I guess it’s a theory I should play with.
Yess.. learning to control the speed and oscillation of your vibrato and its ‘spiral’ can help navigate through those trickier passages that requires acute and quick dexterity while moving through a lot of notes within a vocal line. That’s why most of the really agile vocalists have such a peculiar pulse to their vibrato.. ‘Brandy, beyonce, Kim Burrell, Jazmine, Whitney’ ..a good vibrato contributes to articulation and that ‘rolling’ effect that melismatic users have.
@@BMEZY wonderful explanation! Thank you!
@@BusyBrandi no prob!
Her natural vibrato definitely is at play.
she is incredible
Honestly love how detailed your analysis of her techniques are. 👌🏾
YAS I LOVE JAZMINE! Im so glad she's been making her comeback, the people need show this queen some love !
Here’s a comment for your algorithm. Her voice and your comments speak for themselves. I don’t have anything to add.
I love other vocal teacher youtubers, BUT Sam... Sam, you are just special. I have learned so much just from watching your videos and your explanations/examples are just so straight to the point and easy to understand.
Please please please react to Jazmine Sullivan's cover of Home from The Wizard of Oz when she was just 11 years old! It is just mind blowing how talented she was at such a young age!
I remember when I first saw that video, I watched it like 20 times lol
He knew she is a beast just bye listening to the intro💯👌
I'm soo glad you followed my suggestion. Thank you Sam!
Thank you for your commentary. It was informative and joyful to see you in with the performance.
I love jazmine!!! Thank you for explaining ✨
Yes i was waiting for this thank you
That range is killer. Love it.
Jasmine has a great sound and her
background singers have awesome
harmony.
I love the terminology you use when describing voice
The more life experiences she's been through the better her voice has become & her range ..that range is ridiculous! 🔥🔥🔥 She's always been GOOD but she's gotten even better ❤❤
It’s so wonderful to see how much you genuinely enjoy dissecting these videos and appreciate these artists talent. New favorite account! Thanks for sharing :)
video is a SERVE as usual. Pls do lianne la havas bitter sweet next. her voice has freed up so much recently and you have to do a vid on herrrrrrrr 💖
Jasmine Sullivan is a certified natural born SINGER. She doesn't need to be evaluated. She has proven herself many times before. Especially, when she sung on the tribute to Aretha Franklin.
💯🎯‼
i love these type of videos and the analysis u give is so great and i love having the person as an example of what you're talking about its so great thanks for these videos
Her voice OMG!!! Love it
love the way you describe and your choice of words to help us understand better. Awsome job!
Nobody can sing R&B like Jasmine Sullivan BUT Jasmins Sullivan.

Thank you for presenting presenting
this video.
OMG this is everything, thank you Sam!
I love watching your reaction to her vocals, the subtle smiles really get me! Jaz is the truth!!!
Yay! Really appreciate you doing more Jazmine :3
I love Jazmine! Her voice is simply awesome! I wish I could do runs like that!
Love your analysis as usual. I understand so much more about voice and performance just from your videos. I also appreciate the variety in the performances you analyze.
I love finding out new artists from you, you explain their vocals so well it makes me really appreciate the singer more 🥰 (btw if anyone who sees this comment want to recommend jazmine’s song pls reply)
Also a fan of Joyful. Recs: Insecure, In Love With Another Man, Bust Your Windows, Forever Doesn't Last.
live acoustic version of "Forever Don't Last" is just.... masterful.
Let it burn, forever don't last (live and studio), in love with another man, bust your windows, pick up your feelings (live and studio)
From her debut "Lion, tigers & bears" very unique with a classical feel. Also "Lost One", I prefer the live version, set up is just like from this video.
Stuttering, after the Hurricane, and Need you bad are some of my favs from her
I call her incredible low note execution “open booty notes”
... yes i do.... because she always opens her vowels at the end to make them sound like “ooo-uhh”
And it just gives it this deep, dirty, clear sounding low note that reverberates through the chest
Thank you for doing this!!!!I loved your take, and she is absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hands down...my fav r&b vocalist.....#shes so underrated!!!!!!!
I have no words! This young woman is just amazing! Please TOUR with the new music! You are epic live! Love Ya! ❤️
She is unmatched! UNMATCHED!!!!!
She is AMAZING!!!
Holy shit. Thanks for the new song for repeat
Damn she gives me goosebumps!!! Amazing
I’m hooked and I’m not sure why. I loved watching his facial expressions. Ms Sullivan will do that to you👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
