To adjust the mannequin for your bust size, you can pin on an old bra with correct cup size and then fill cup with stuffing. Helps get everything where it belongs. Thanks for all your videos. I'm a new subscriber. I've been sewing for years, but am just now interested in upcycling...you're very talented.
Hey everyone! Thank you for watching. I hope this video gives you a good idea on how to add darts and fit them to your body. Don’t forget to check out Letitia’s video to see what she created ☺️ ALSO if you noticed my ring, I recently got engaged to Erik! Get ready for wedding videos 😍
By this time, almost forty years ago, I transformed a bridesmaid dress from a larger size to a smaller size. I had no idea what I was doing. I took in the bust area by four inches which meant that the sleeve holes and sleeves had to be reshaped. I winged it and succceeded. I wanted the dress to look like every other dress in the bridal party, so all of the excess fullness in the skirt was moved to the back. I know the lady I made this alteration for was very satisfied. Miss Coolirpa, you brought back a very good memory.
YOU ARE THE DIY QUEEN! I feel like if I altered my shirt first, and then did my transformation, it would work out way better! This tutorial was so helpful 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
This girl said I’m not a professional but there yet her job is way better then my local shop around me you are very talented wishing you nothing but success and health
April, you read in my mind ! I just bought an old shirt that needs to be tailored, no need to say your video is super informative, it definitely will help me a lot. Thanks for the tip about lowering darts from the apex, I didn't know that. Another video about draping would be super helpful ! I just finished making a jumpsuit, and draping the fitted bust was a pain. At the end of a long try and error process it turned out really nice but I feel like some good tips from you would have saved me a lot of time 😊 Thanks April for your super helpful channel 🙏🏻
Thanks for making this! I'm tired of buying clothes off the shelf and they are basically a box with no fitting done at all. Unfortunately I've got massive hips compared to my top and a tiny waist compared to both (hey at least that figure has been in style lately) so I've been trying to figure out the best way to fix some of them. The back darts along the princess line are the biggest things I need, but I also need the side seems taken in as well. Very helpful!
This is great! I'm really starting to appreciate YT a lot more... 10 years ago it was pretty much crap, full of just hilarious, yet time-wasting videos of nonsense. Now it's actually full of useful info on practically any topic you can think of. Hooray! Thank you for contributing valuable content! :D
thank you so much! I thrifted a $2 shirt that I instantly fell in love with bit it was probably like 8 sizes too big lol but I'm determined to make it my size! :)
You say you're not a professional. I cannot believe that you didn't have any training, did you learn all this just from experience? Thankyou for sharing your knowledge. You are very talented and you have guts.
I had to look at the other comments to see if I had missed an episode or something, congrats on your engagement! (You don't have to make a video, but a lot of people do which is why I thought maybe I missed an episode). This video is actually super helpful in a different way! I'm currently making a dress on a dress form for the very first time, and I've seen you drape things before but I don't recall a specific step-by-step. I'm using a sewing pattern but also the form, and when I put the garment on the dress form as I'm sewing, it wasn't fitting right, so I added a dart on the side... which I wasn't sure if that was right but it made it fit so much better. Now that I see you did that for this video, and you also say that different bodies might need different darts, it makes me feel better about my choices :) Thank you!!
I love your more creative videos where you completely transform something. But I really enjoy these simpler videos, because they are something that I would actually attempt and are very helpful! Thanks again!
My sister thrifted this big ol dress a while ago that she wants to resize and make it fit her better. The skirt part we can just gather more, but the top part is gonna be a lot more work. This video shall come very much in handy 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
If you've ever bought a nice shirt that just doesn't FIT, videos like this are much appreciated. Wish I could learn to tailor my own clothes. Dammit.....
This was so helpful and informative! Really learned a ton! Especially the "catch the last thread when finishing a dart" hit me!! Please feel free to add all your seamstress tricks, tips and knowledge everywhere! Thank you so much for the quality content!
Have been making my own dart templates to make shaping faster. Craft and fabric stores sell blank plastic for templates. With several to take in, the paper bag templates were replaced. A weight loss of 40 pounds and limited budget it helped to reduce boxy blouses.
OH MY SWEET HEAVEN! CONGRATS ON YOUR ENGAGEMENT! You've been such an inspiration and motivation for me to design and thrift my own clothes. Thank you! And congrats again!!!! 🎉🎉🎉
Been thinking of adding some darts to some of my blouses as I wear larger sizes than my waist and then this video pops up! I would say it looks like you could've taken a little bit of length off the sleeves as it looks a little long, but if you've got it rolled up it'll hardly be a problem. Love this transformation. Not showy, but makes a big difference!
Hi April i am addicted to your videos..im your new subscriber. it's inspired me so much. Im planning to buy a machine so i can DIY my old jeans and hopping that someday I can have my own business just by sewing. Keep it up please. From Philippines ❤😘
Beautiful! I really wanna do this with a couple oversized mens shirts I thrifted. But for a newbie like me it might be too complicated... will give it a try though! Congrats on getting engaged!!
Oh my god - this opens up a whole new world for me! I have so many pieces that have potential but just look like a sack of potatoes around my waist because of the standard fit. If it's possible to make them just that tad bit slimmer around the waist they would be perfect! Gotta get to a tailor soon :D!
I don't think that can be done turning low waisted jeans into high waisted isn't a matter of just seam ripping and taking it in here and there, you need more fabric from the crotch to the waist and a longer zipper. Not to mention, if you are buying jeans in a larger size and trying to tailor them to fit differently, it would be immensely hard to get the denim to sit right on your body without twisting, since getting the new curves correctly on a piece of denim designed for a different style would be near-impossible. Additionally jeans tend to have embellishments like rivets which you have to work around, as removing them typically leaves a hole.
I’ve seen a bunch of yt vids where it’s done but I know April could improve upon the ideas. From all her videos I’ve seen her do very complex reconstructions so I would really love to see this video!! I’m very confident she could do it!!
omg this is so amazing. i'm totally gonna try this on existing wardrobe i have for photoshoots! getting a fitted look would make things look so much better!
Awesome job and fit, April! I'm learning and so appreciate competence, because everything is so dang hard for me. I'm burning up RUclips, the world's most convenient teacher. I spent the morning frustrated when I discovered a bent sewing needle. Of course, I bent it doing other wrong things. Maybe my lesson one should be meditation and/or mindfulness.
Really helpful tutorial.. I've learnt stitching seeing your tutorials and I recently started my RUclips channel as well. I am definitely going to try this very soon. And yeah.. congrats on your engagement :)
Really loved this video on the different types of darts, you should link it back to that other video where you put fisheye darts into a dress and then said you'd need a separate tutorial to explain, because you did a great job here to demo all the little technicalities of the process. Congrats on your engagement as well!
Congratulations!!!!!! I think you 2 wanted to film this video the way you did, so your left hand was always shown 😄 and you don't need to make a separate video to announce the news 😊 Same as few of the people commented, I paused the video and checked if I had accidentally missed a video 😅 So happy for the both of you 🤗
omg april !!!! i just noticed the ring !!!!! thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial, and i'm sending you and your fiance lots of love and positive energy !
amazing! just started a new job but can't afford a new wardrobe. So gonna do this with dome old baggy shirts. Make some nice smart fitted ones 👌. I bought a cheap dressmakers mannequin for £20 and now ready to get started x
My dream of being good at sowing was quickly crushed when I realized that I don't even have the patients to watch a video about sowing without skipping :,))
Congrats on your engagement!! 😍 Can you do tutorial onadjustments on man suits and dressshirts please? Maybe use your fiance for sizing?! I can't believe me and my fiance paid 120 for alterations when the suit itself was already $100!! 😥
“I’m not a professional.” Interesting comment. I expect most of your viewers feel differently. I feel the need to cut up all my I’ll-fitting white shirts. Love my tailor but spent $150 there last week so I’d like to be able to do some things myself. I’m tall and slender with very wife shoulders and very narrow hips. To add to that, my right leg and arm are quite a bit longer than the left. Truly I can’t buy anything without having it tailored. I’m an eye doctor and must have a professional work wardrobe as well as a casual home wardrobe so it’s a constant challenge. I have so much fun watching your channel. Thank you.
I have a beautiful, very unique blouse i found at the thrift store a while ago that i LOVE, but as ive lost a fair amount of weight it went from being just a bit too big for me to incredibly oversized. hoping to get the courage to try this out soon! (probably gonna start with a different shirt first to get the hang of it, lol)
I dont even know what an apex is, this video is a wee bit advanced and uses vocab beginners wont underatand lol. Beautiful work! Cant wait until i can do stuff this advanced
Frankie Barrett I have put on weight that at my age is not going to come back off. I have several shirts that I particularly like and want to make them bigger. Everywhere online whenever I input shirt alteration it always comes up with how to make shirts slimmer. Can you please do a tutorial on how to put in a gusset for mens shirts or how else to tailor them out, not in !

This is so great because I have a lot of my late father's shirt that I don't want to throw out. So I want to tailor it to fit me. Thank you April!
that's such a cool idea!
Same exact here. Did you end up doing it?
Exactly my position right now😢❤
thats actually so cute and such a good idea
This is way to advanced for my non-skill, that shirt looks fantastic on you and the sewing is beautiful. Thank you!
WHOA WHOA WHOA WAIT......YOUR RING!!! Congratulations to you and Eric!!!!!!!
I kept noticing that ring too! I scrolled down to the comments to see if anyone mentioned it.
Follow her on Instagram for more bts on that!
I hope its a cheap ring 💍
Astral Kermit why?
@@lamiah5604 because its a waste of money to buy a 1000 dollor ring

Lady!! I have been watching you're channel for several years now. You are a professional!
April your 💍 is beautiful!! Congratulations on your engagement!! Wishing you both all the best!
I'm wondering why you didn't put the shirt on the dress form inside out.
thank you so much! I thrifted a $2 shirt that I instantly fell in love with bit it was probably like 8 sizes too big lol but I'm determined to make it my size! :)

Very helpful tutorial, thanks. I'd really appreciate a similar step-by-step on how to alter pants that are too baggy.
Best demo of how to reduce a short size that I’ve found!! Thx!
I love how fitted and professional it looks now!
You are so talented and patient, thanks for this video!! 👍
OH MY SWEET HEAVEN! CONGRATS ON YOUR ENGAGEMENT! You've been such an inspiration and motivation for me to design and thrift my own clothes. Thank you! And congrats again!!!! 🎉🎉🎉
That looks so nice on you. (It helps to have your figure, too, though, LOL.) It's a lot of work, but I do like a fitted blouse like this.
Keri M. Peardon yes it is a lot of work! But looks great haha
Love that shirt ... pin strip is classic.. thank you for the video definitely going to try this ❤

I think this may be your best tutorial yet. It was superbly clear and well organised, an excellent step-by-step. Thank you!
Beautiful April. Thank you so much for sharing and making this video! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️
What a FANTASTIC tutorial! Thank you!
Congrats on your engagement!!! Have so much fun planning, and I wish you many blessings over your marriage 😁😁😁😁

La camisa te quedo hermosa !! De bolsa de papas a camisa elegante.Sos una genia !!! Saludos desde Buenos Aires
Wow..the ring.. Engaged.. Congratulations and may God bless you.. 😇
Thank you so much for this! I just bought a button up shirt that I need to alter, so this is perfect timing! I'm excited to try out all your trips!
That shirt looks so much better now :)
can you show how to turn low waisted jeans to high waisted next?
That would be amazing actually
Please yees I need that video!!

J Globetrotter I agree. I think it’s better to just buy a high-waisted pair 😂

Wow gorgeous Engagement ring. Congratulations to you and Eric. 🍾🥂
Great job! You are better than any professional I have ever known! Wish I lived near you.

LOVE this. I recently had a breast reduction and lost some tummy inches so I need to take in a ton of my clothes!
