  • In this video, I leave the colorful fishing village of Castletownbere to start walking The Ireland Way. Castletownbere is one of the five main fishing ports in Ireland with the second safest, natural harbor in the world.
Hiking up the Caha Mountains and seeing Hungry Hill in the distance, I make my descent into the town of Adrigole.
After leaving Glengarriff, I make my way to the end of stage one at the village of Kealkill.

    Irish Blessing
May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. And rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

Hi Irish Cows.... I thought I heard a response, Hi American Guy! What beautiful landscapes and scenery! Thank you for taking us along, oh, and I love the music as well.
When you talked about know one knows that date and time, and then stated today is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice in it! Carpe Diem Brother. that all hits me right in the heart and soul!

    Nice.
I live in Ireland but am from Scotland. You should check Scotland out for its trails.
We have the right to roam there so can camp anywhere the outdoor access code allows. Ivee found camping a bit more problematic in parts of Ireland.

I have really enjoyed your videos. Great information! I have watched most of them - just gathering information as I plan to thru-hike the AT in 2026. I'm 51 years old ... so I am little younger than you. Keep it up! I will be following your journey in Ireland. As a Christian, I really appreciate the active relationship that you have with God - it is an encouragement to me. And Roll Tide Roll!!!

Hopefully you like yours as well. I really appreciate the time you spend putting your videos together. I have learned a lot from watching them. Plus, I agree with you, part of the reason I enjoy them is because we seem to have a lot in common. :) @@TheHikingRev

The Camino (pilgrim walks) might interest you too. St. Declan's way, Tóchar Phádraig (St Patricks Way), St Kevins way, St Finbars way, Cnoc an dTobar and Cosán na Naomh all worth doing.

Outstanding! More like watching a movie than RUclips video. Is this “real time” (September) or did you hike earlier? The scenery is so pastural and green. Nice to see a solo woman hiker. Looks safe and no worries about bears, snakes or other….just sweet 🐑 sheep. You are so right (at the end you spoke about cherishing every day) esp at our age. I applaud you for being out there hiking in another country- what an experience 🥾

Almost all livestock/ungulates(4-leg, hooves) get spooked by bicycles, but you are not bicycling, nor do you have an external frame pack on.

Very nice reportage, as always. Beautiful landscapes, like I remember from last years trip. The name "Hungry Hill" seems to stem from the great famine in the 1850's. Moving further towards North you will probably encounter the ruins of several deserted famine houses and villages. Maybe your ancestors have lived in one of those then.

@@TheHikingRev Ireland had a dreadful famine period lasting several years in the 1850-1860's due to a fungus destroying potatoes. Then rural people relied almost exclusively on potatoes as a food source. About one million people starved to death and two million people emigrated to the United States and also to European countries. The Irish population has not fully recovered since then up to today.

There is little threat from the wildlife in Ireland. There's nothing that's going to try to eat you other than mosquitos. There are no snakes - legend has it that St Patrick drove them out. However, you need to make sure that you treat any water as liver fluke can be left behind by the sheep. Also, take care if you're in fields with cows as youngsters can be a bit frisky and cows with young calves can be protective.
