I know it's a large expense, but I would love to see you do the same thing with white markers on a colored surface. A good White paint marker always seems harder to find than any other color.
This is one of the most enjoyable videos from tenhun I've watched and I've followed him for years. As artists we all wish to have the time, money and space to just build up a wall, go ham on it and test new art supplies. It's really satisfying to watch someone do something so fun while sharing nitpicky details about the supplies (just like conversations I have with my artist friends), on top of that his art style is so pleasant to watch come to life and it's impressive that he just freestyled the whole thing. Absolutely loved the vid, thank you Peter ❤
I agree. As a fellow artist, I definitely wish I had a free wall to paint freestyle on. I love that unlike a lot of artists he incorporates his logo into his artwork. So his logo is noticeable, however it doesn't stick out like a massive eye sore or take away your attention to his artwork.
As someone who's worked in home improvement stores for several years, eggshell and satin are the two I recommend with doing murals overall. It'd really depend on the base your painting over - drywall, brick, concrete, ect. So I'd recommend doing a small test spot for others in a little section with some samples so you can see the reactions of your painting supplies.
I feel like this is a great example of a artist never blames his tools ; even though some pens we not so great we still got a sick piece by the end ❤❤❤❤
I love how clean the mural came out. Something so pure about just a black and white mural. Really shows off your skill since there is no erase or undo!
I’m always so impressed with people who can come up with ideas on the spot and execute perfectly. How do you have so many ideas in your head to be able to fill all that space so organically and create such an interesting composition with so many components? It’s amazing!
I been using the Elmer’s Painters markers since day one in my art career (est2012). The surface will affect the opacity of the black. I’ve tried the Montana’s, but they bleed when varnished over. The Painters markets have zero bleed when varnished over. I also like to manipulate the paint with my fingers on the canvas and the painters allows enough time to do so before drying.
@@carriebeachey7130 haha yeah, I use Liquitex gloss varnish over all my canvases and it makes the montana's bleed. I love the Elmer's Painters markers, but they're becoming more and more difficult to find around me. I usually get them at Wally world but the black are commonly stolen by kids to do graffiti. So Walmart has changed the way they package them and it's becoming more and more difficult to find what I need.
@@carriebeachey7130 @eric.estrada Good to know... here I'm like I'm going for Montana ... but the bleed after... I'm gonna be doing the outside of a camper, do you think I need the varnish? or do you think no matter the sealant used the Montana will bleed? Does their strong opaque job equal "runs out of paint faster" per pen? Sorry two Montana users I had to ask. :)
I’m a huge fan of your review style, and it would be a delight to see you tackle more products. What do you think about doing a review of different apps for creating in the digital space? A series that covers what you think works best for each stage of a project from sketch to finished product would be very interesting.
Loved the final result man! B&W Sketch wall always is poppin. As far as product review videos, I think you should do more for sure! Can't count the amount of times you're looking at a wall of art materials and ask yourself, "What's the best one?"
Another bonus of the Montana paint markers is, I bought some more than 5 years ago for a project used them maybe twice and capped them and stuck them in a box in my closet and recently I pulled them out shook them up vigorously and the worked just as well. I was shocked I was sure they would have dried out but nope drew nice solid opaque lines
It's almost like a cartoon where the ideas of the main character expand beyond a thought bubble and take life of their own. Really cool to see an artist doing such cool work.
I appreciate these types of videos as it saves me a lot of time trying to find what I want for what job. As you pointing out what drips better or the difference between Alcohol or oil. Also, Super dope seeing just flat black throw up. Its dope!
The fact you did that with no sketch, no projector, just freehanded the whole thing, incredible! I love all your videos including some try before I buy on art supplies.. I'm an artist on a budget I'm feeling it.
I love watching videos like this knowing good damn well that I won't be making any art, just for the fun of it! And the monochrome always looks soooo good!
This mural is amazing. I have to sketch out my design first and I’m amazed that you did it without sketching first on the wall. I had a project at school to do it like you. A continuous drawing linking all together. Again amazing. I’m glad I came across your video.
This totally reminds me of this mural I saw in Montreal 🇨🇦 It was this sure sweet doodle style art piece done in all black and white in this tiny one stall parking bay. 4 walls, ceiling, and floor where all done, it was such a cool piece !! Thanks for bring that memory back :)
This is one of my favourite projects you’ve done, Peter! I have always been partial to the “pen and ink, no colour look”, and this precious, but GIANT, 3-sided box of goodness, makes me very happy. I like that, at the same time that you’re making this awesome and EPIC fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants drawing, you are weeding through all the paint marker options out in the universe.😆
The Painters are also sold at Walmarts if you're needing the value or quicker access than some of the more specialized paint markers that you usually have to go to a special art store or order online
I use the painters and poscas. I also get the empty pens. You can mix your own colors. No need to buy the refills. Golden fluid paints work well. Some have to be thinned down a bit but most don’t.
This is my favorite mural of yours. It's a m-youral. It's the essence of you, no sketch, no safety net, no colors. Pure. You could do it with your fingertips and some chimney soot. The markers? Whatever.
Love this style of TenHun video and art. This, the isolation piece and the can I draw for xxx hours videos were great. Some handy info on the markers too. Those Jazz’s bags look really good!!
I loved this video because it has true and honest information on all markers on the market. Wish we had more videos like this with all products we have to buy and try ...Great job ...loved it!!!
Molotow are my favourite paint markers. They're cheaper here than posca. Which might be a UK thing. They do my favourite silver marker too that is sooo close to a mirror when applied properly (and carefully, the bit I often mess up!)
This was super helpful and fun to watch. I don’t do a ton of murals in my client work but whenever I do I lean heavily on paint markers for the line work. The last one I did, I had some good luck with Sharpie Magnums, the black wasn’t as opaque as the Poscas I typically use but they were consistent and had good longevity. They also seemed way less prone to getting gunked up. Also, the coating at the end was a bonus pro tip, because as someone who’s experimented with different markers on a single mural the finished product can look a bit mismatched.
Loved this video; first time seeing this creator! My personal take between Posca and molotow is just the color range… molotow has desaturated deep colors that I’ve not been able to find from Posca. That’s it 🤷🏼♀️
The mural is super dope!! It was nice seeing all the different paint markers. I am a simp for POSCA markers and love them more than any other art supply lol. 😂✌🏼
One thing to take into account is the ability to refill. I've been using the same set of Molotow markers for over 5 years with a bottle of refill ink. In the long run the cost if probably comparable to buying a bunch of Poscas.
Really cool! I do fluid art and sometimes doodle over a pour with paint markers and Posca and Artistro are my go-tos. I've never heard of some of the other ones but I'm glad you took some of the guess work out. 😁
Dope video i liked it a lot, art supply review always appreciated, in my city all the art stores are mostly gone so these reviews mean more than ever now.
Love It! The piece looks great! I love the feedback on all the other brands! I started using the Montana’s on a mural I’m working on and the colors are great too. Color mixing is great for empties.
Great comparison 🙌🏼Personally I prefer Molotow because they have refill tubes and extensions. Making them much more durable than Posca (doing murals left me with waaaay too many half empty Posca markers 😅). And here in the Netherlands Molotow markers are actually at the same price point as Posca!
Really enjoyed this kind of video! Would be cool to watch some reviews like this one from time to time 👀 Maybe you could test some white markers - I really think that they are harder to find than good black ones!
I use paint markers on every single piece of art I do (I'm a sucker for a black outline!) This video was AWESOME. Not only do I love your art, (I have three prints in my home!) I respect your opinion. Thanks for clueing me into some new markers to try! Especially talking about value for the $$$.
For Liquitex, they shine when you want to do glazes of colour as most are fairly transparent. The price of Molotow in the US. 😳 Wild. But they do have replacement parts for everything as well as specialty nibs (calligraphy, increased flow). And refills. That artwork, wow, what mastery! Loved the review as well.
Great video! There are a few things that aren't covered. I use mainly Posca and Molotow, and I'm pretty sure that they have the best colour ranges. You can buy spare nibs for both of these markers, and they are interchangeable. Molotow also has empty markers, all sizes, and refills, so you can mix your own colours.
Couple of years back I went with Molotow. I’d got frustrated with posts as not dark enough. Love them. Including that wide boy. Did some set decoration with them last year - colour options not quite as good and got a bit streaky. Black for the win though..
know the montana and molotow are more expensive than a posca However, a useful thing to note, you can replace the nibs and get refill ink for both unlike a posca (That always seem half full to me). All 3 are pretty reliable and posca fine nib's seem to have the best flow out of all 3 fine options IMO.
I was hoping you would love the Montana. Never tried them on walls but they are great on canvas and the easy of refills and nib replacement is a bonus! I like molotows paint flow but their nibs used to tear down super fast.
This is a great video I’ve been getting into murals and struggling with figuring out what to use - I watch you a lot and this video is a fav thank you!!
the Pen-Touch markers are from Sakura, who also make the illustrator favorite Micron. I'm not sure that they are meant for this type of application, but I've had a lot of success using them in my (relatively) smaller illustration work. the gold and silver are especially nice. they are definitely oil based. great vid as usual!
Hullo Peter, Excellent video and paint marker reviews! I have had a few different experiences than you did in this video, but you do murals professionally and I while I have done them for money, just not on your scale! I still prefer to use a good filbert brush and a can of paint when working on the vertical plane. Sweet video, thanks for the opinions!
I love this video concept and the effort and research you did for it. As always the sound and editing is superb. My only suggestion/idea for a follow up video, as someone who uses paint markers is a further comparison video(s) where you show a colored/white paint marker going over top a solid color. Besides murals, most people use paint markers for tagging, graffiti lettering, small scale stuff, showing how they work on say figures, props, plastic and vinyl items and then showcasing their coverage over various different surfaces too and not just a prepped wall would truly show the range of each marker(paper/canvas, wood, metal, plastic, stone, brick, vinyl, glass). There's sites out there like artprimo and some others that specialize in other brands and styles, including a wide range of diy ones that would allow you to use your Golden acrylic paint, and other higher quality paints that are probably better quality then what most paint markers use. Also can't stress this enough Moltov markers are stupid pricey and most of them IMO aren't worth paying the price. The huge exception though is their liquid chrome series. Stupid expensive, but I swear it turns anything into chrome, with basically a mirror finish, you could do easily an entire awesome project just on that product.
Are you drawing that with no guild line pencil drawing.. Yess you are!. seriously awesome. I enjoyed this piece and reviewing the paint markers it helps others when looking for quility supplies
19:23 Peter talking about how insanely difficult and talented he is being able to do such a big mural on the fly. If I ever tried to do something like this, there would need to be soooo much more white paint to be constantly painting over mistakes, lol
You are so brave for starting without a sketch under! Watching you doodle on the walls was so satisfying 😌 P.s: Thank you so much for rating all of the markers while you use them.
Aaahhh this was so much fun! I would love to see you do more videos like this. Your mural came out so cool, amazing work! Can't wait for the next one 🤩
I feel like I can comment on this. I have a huge detailed black on white mural in my office that I did. I love it. It’s not totally finished but it’s so so so detailed. It’s taking about 3 mins per square inch and it’s a huge wall I have every single uniposca available. All sizes and all colours. I have about 200 - 300 Molotow markers. Montana I have like 30-40. And so many more. Just an idea of what I like. Anyway. Posca is my fave for consistency. Water based and covers well first time. I only wish they had some gloss options and maybe oil based. Pentouch are oil based but the nibs wear down so quick and they blow out easily. Liquitex are so enjoyable to use and they have like a nice glossy coat. They are easy to control and are opaque Montana is my second fave for coverage and control but they need a better tip variety. Uni paint is actually a dark horse for me. The 0.7mm is useless on walls as it picks up debris so easily and ends up dried out but rhe bullet tip is amazing in my opinion and has a gorgeous glossy finish. I use it sometimes to go over my posca lines if I want some gloss in there. Great paint and satisfying. Molotow again are good as long as u use the right nib. Paints flow and the coverage is consistent but the tips seem to dry out more than others. I’m not sure why. They have a great covers all in copper and it’s beautiful when it dries. U get a copper sheen when the light hits. OTR is more graffiti and is fairly runny. Depends on the effect u want but I stay away from it at home on paper and my mural. Sharpie oil paint markers in bigger nib sizes have a nice gloss sheen. They don’t get too sticky like some oils can. Dries quickly too so when ur going over lines with colours ur normally good. Those are the ones that stand out for me anyway. I love markers right now with my mural and I’ve learned so much since I started it.
Yo ten hun when you use the big nib markers angle it at like 45 degrees with like just the corner flat to the wall instead of the whole nib, it's hard to get used to but you'll have and easier time making smooth thick lines
I've been asked by the business I work for to do a mural in one of our new sites.. after my first attempt with terrible paint on a glossy primed wall I had no idea how I was going to try again! I have been scouring the internet for answers on the best type of paint pen, or method and came across this video! I have bought an assortment of sizes of those Montana Pens and hope to get back to the wall next week. So fingers crossed I dont muck it up, and thank you for making this video!

You are so brave for starting without a sketch under! Watching you doodle on the walls was so satisfying 😌
P.s: Thank you so much for rating all of the markers while you use them.
Dude!!! That is freaking sick!!! I love your art in color but damn!!! She so fresh in black and white!!!!
Thanks for the product review. Great mural. Blessings.
This video was a hit on every single level. I was just vibing so hard throughout the whole thing.
Aaahhh this was so much fun! I would love to see you do more videos like this. Your mural came out so cool, amazing work! Can't wait for the next one 🤩
Super sick!!! Killin it with the black and white mural
So Fresh So Clean.
I feel like I can comment on this. I have a huge detailed black on white mural in my office that I did. I love it. It’s not totally finished but it’s so so so detailed. It’s taking about 3 mins per square inch and it’s a huge wall
I have every single uniposca available.
They are easy to control and are opaque
Montana is my second fave for coverage and control but they need a better tip variety.
Amazing! 🤩 Thanks for doing this - answered all the questions I had about paint pens, and all the questions I didn’t know I had! 😂 Well done 👏👏👏
I absolutely love this. You are such an inspiration man.
Awesome video! Can you maybe make a follow up to show us which ones to absolutely avoid? Like which ones are really bad or just not worth the money.
Bick intensity markers are the best for oil pens I’ve seen. I sometimes like to layer that gloss over the poscas matt finish
You're really good with colour, but I also really like the black and white!
Yo ten hun when you use the big nib markers angle it at like 45 degrees with like just the corner flat to the wall instead of the whole nib, it's hard to get used to but you'll have and easier time making smooth thick lines
Dude! This mural is so fresh. And love the reviews!
I spy a Circuit Rhythm and Arturia Microfreak and maybe a Circuit Tracks on the desktop. Respect!
Love your mural.
I live in The Netherlands and here the posca is the most expensive.
I went for the Molotov the colors are just so much nicer.
LOVE this art review content, can't wait to see you do the same with other colors on different colored backgrounds. ❤❤❤❤❤
