Of course I grew up hearing the studio version on the radio and then I ended up buying all their records, the plane crash in 1977 happened when I was around 9th grade and I was devastated. Back then going to the movie theater was a very common thing to do and what every kid wanted to do for sure and to show you what a big deal it was when the plane crash happened, back then they didn't have a half-hour of advertisements and previews of upcoming movies but they did always have a few short previews and it ended up taking like 8 to 10 minutes. It must have cost him a ton of money to skip the previews but instead of previews they would show this short documentary feature about Lynyrd Skynyrd in the plane crash and boy was it ever emotional.
Another huge Lynyrd Skynyrd fan-favorite is The Ballad Of Curtis Loew, and I would definitely recommend the studio version since it is so well recorded and put together and that's what we all heard.

Volunteer jam 13 was the first performance by lynyrd skynyrd after the plane crash, and there is a your tube video of that performance of freebird, my parents was at that concert it was at starwood amphitheater in Nashville tennessee, they didn't sing the lyrics and let the crowd sing, there was a special moment when a spot light was on an empty Mic stand to represent Ronnie yeah look up lynyrd skynyrd freebird volunteer jam 13

Great southern rock band from the 60's-80's. It is very sad what happened to this band in losing so many members in a plane crash in 1977. My favorite songs are "Simple Man", "Free Bird" & "Sweet Home Alabama". They had lots of great songs such as "Call Me The Breeze", "Tuesday's Gone", "That Smell", "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew", "What's Your Name", "Saturday Night Special" etc.

That is a true story that happened to Ronnie. He was “cutting the rug” (dancing) with a girl who didn’t tell him she had a boyfriend. The guy did pull a gun on him. He wrote that song that very night after this incident happened. 😂 Great reaction.

I've seen your reactions to Free Bird and Simple Man studio versions. There is so much more to hear and see from them. I was not at Knebworth, it is in England. but there were 5 other bands on that day including the Rolling Stones who were the headliners. "The Needle and the Spoon" is good in the studio and live versions. "Call Me the Breeze"

oOoOO mercy yes... Lynard Skynyrd absolutely rocks!!! Everything they've ever done is great ... "Free Bird" will always hold a special place in my heart, it was my brothers most favorite song he sang and played it constantly. I lost him in 1998, he always had said "play Free Bird" at my funeral, I played it at the cemetery after everyone had left and it was just me and him ❤️ I still play it on my phone now when I go to talk to him ...

Great song that exists in the shadow of Free Bird, unfortunately. It was fun watching. Thanks Adogg. I hope the view count for this and Good Vibrations picks up very soon. The numbers I’m seeing make NO sense - both very popular songs.

Never got to see them before the plane crash in '77, but I did see an incarnation of them after, led by the late singer's (Ronnie Van Zant) brother Johnny Van Zant. They also have a brother Donnie (he led the group .38 Special, another good group!). I was 16 when this song came out and they were *huge*!
