Wagakki Band uses traditional instruments and incorporates them into modern rock. The banjo-like instrument is called a shamisen, the multi-stringed harp-like instrument is called a koto.

The Shamisen is a 3 stringed instrument, banjo-like due to the skin stretched over the base. The 3 crystals are the knobs to tension the strings. The pick Beni is using to pluck the strings is meant to represent a closed fan, which is what was traditionally used.

  • @flyer93
    @flyer93 3 месяца назад +18

Good reaction! The stringed instrument that she (Beni Ninagawa) was playing is a traditional Japanese 3-stringed instrument called shamisen or samisen. The "harp" is a Koto, Japan's national instrument and is a half-tube zither played by Kiyoshi Ibukuro. There is more traditional japanese instruments in the band, Shakuhachi (the wind instrument) played by Daisuke Kaminaga and the Wadaiko drums played by Kurona. Wagakki literally means traditional Japanese musical instruments. Singer is Yuko Suzuhana and she sings in Shigin, a traditional Japanese way of singing poetry. The other members is Machiya (guitar, vocals), Asa (bass) and Wasabi (drums). The band combines modern metal and rock music with the Wagakki and Shigin, and they are masters of their instruments. Another reaction suggestion would be Senbonzakura, which they performed live with Amy Lee from Evanescense. They also dis Bring Me To Life by Evanescence at the same conscert, it's a very cool version of it in my opinion. Sorry for the long comment but I hope it was somewhat informative :D

Welcome to the world of Wagakki band. One of Japan's most popular bands. They were officially created in 2013 by Pianist, composer, poet, and shigin singer Yuko Suzuhana.
Homura (flame) is a Machiya (guitarist) instrumental that they only perform at concerts. Akatsuki no ito (thread of dawn) is also written by Machiya and is used by the audience as an encore chant.
Wagakki Band translates to Japanese musical instrument band
Hibiya Yagai Ongakudo = Hibiya open scene
They have released 7 studio albums and there are many live videos on YT. Just stay away from anything uploaded by Avex. Will be blocked for sure.
Choose video from channels such as CC W, Frank Garcia and Wagakki band's own YT channel.

Wagakki is the word for aĺl traditional Japanese instruments together. The Shamisen is a three-stringed banjo-like instrument, traditionally often played by Geisha with their fans used as a pick. Since this wore out the fans they have been replaced by the icescraperlike tool.

“Wagakki” is Japanese for “traditional instruments”
The band was founded by the shigin (classical poetry) singer, SUZUHANA Yuko, who is also a classically trained pianist. She developed the concept of fusing Japanese traditional instruments and musical tropes with modern western music. The full band consist of eight musicians, three on western instruments (bass, guitar, drums), four on Japanese instruments and Suzuhana-sama on vocals and sometimes piano.
The “lute” thing is a Shamisen.
The “harp” thing is a Koto.
The “flute thing” is a shakuhachi.
The Japanese drums are collectively called “wadaiko”.
Yes, you’ve heard these instruments a million times, in movie soundtracks, when they want to convey a Japanese atmosphere. Here is a video that really lets you see up close all the instruments and how they work together: ruclips.net/video/Q2meWkWqc-I/видео.html It was originally written for a “Vocaloid” which is an electronic virtual singer-essentially an AI. In Japan (where else?) vocaloids have actually become pop stars. What can I say? America may be the land of innovation for things like tech and social media, but in music no one here cares any more. Most of the creative action has moved to Europe and Japan.

Wagakki Band is a true supergroup. This is from their initial tour in 2015 and have gained a global fan base. I also think you would like their performance with Amy Lee of Evanescence doing "Bring Me To Life", an excellent arrangement that Amy Lee has said it could be the best done. If you would like to see the group do something with a little more of the traditional aspects, check out the live music video for the song "(Gobousei) + (Homura) /Tour 2018 oto no kairou". It is just amazing and shows all of the group's talent in one spot.

This double feature was also my introduction to them a few years ago and been a fan ever since! Such an interesting fusion of traditional and modern styles, instruments and music. They were all accomplished artists beforehand but even for them it took more or less a year to figure out how to make it all work. Never have I seen an eight person ensemble where each instrument (including Yuuko's voice) is so clearly audible and equal in creating their sound.
For future reactions I definitely recommend the live versions they did of 'Sebonzakura' and 'Bring me to live'. Not only do you get Amy Lee as guest singer but they also have a friggin' Orchestra playing along!
Now that you've reacted to two of my three favorite bands (the other being the Warning) here's hoping that Larkin Poe will follow. Awesome band fronted by the Lovell sisters that has just won a, well deserved, grammy in the contemporary blues category. ruclips.net/video/eIdg03SuvB0/видео.html

Found a new band today! I might have to give you a two-fer if you enjoyed the koto (flat stringed instrument). The Chinese version is called the guzheng and there is a lady who covered the song Playing God by Polyphia on it. It's... so mindblowing. You should look up the original song Polyphia ft. Steve Via - Playing God and then the cover by a lady named Moyun.
On a semi-musical note, if you're interested in Japanese music I suggest just diving headlong into it and their culture. I was fortunate enough to visit Japan this year and got to delve more into their history and culture. They incorporate so much traditional styles into many modern ones, but really work on preserving the origins and uniqueness of it.

You guys really need to check out “ An unhelpful guide to BABYMETAL “. Very informative on how they got started. Entertaining too. Sounds counter intuitive but it’s really not.

Noooooo! Where did you hear this from? By indefinitely, do you mean a hiatus?

@@MFPhoto1It's on their official web-page, in Japanese. Based on an auto-translation (DeepL), they want to pursue solo projects, and there's a suggestion that they intend to reform later, but that could be a mistranslation. As I'm sure you know, "indefinite hiatus" is often a euphemism for permanently splitting up. I'm sad too. I'd at least like to see them live once.

@@kicorse Since my posting, I found that statement on their website. I can understand them having outside musical interests they would like to pursue. That does not mean the split is permanent, though it may be a few years before they get back together, and even then they may not have the exact same lineup.
I sure they meant re-form, and not reform.
