Ben, this is superb! This will be a huge help to people revising for their GST and also for those of us who want a refresher of the syllabus. It's great to have David's commentary as well as the cockpit audio too - nice touch. I'm super stoked for you!
Cheers Rory! Yeh I figured as there wasn’t much in the way of chat - I’d fire up the old Zoom and get some commentary done. Thanks for watching mate...it was a long one!
I am only 5 hours in to my NPPL and have really enjoyed all your videos and have found them really helpful in knowing what is coming. I was surprised to see David Young as your examiner as I would have expected it to be someone who you had not flown with before. This is good to know. Congratulations, nearly there!!
Awesome David! Thanks for commenting. Yeh if your instructor happens to be a qualified examiner you’re ok. I didn’t think it would be him when I first started out. Certainly helped knowing it would be him as there’s not another examiner at the school. If there was - it would have been them. Cheers!
I'm on 28 hours and about to start the nav stuff. I need to remind myself it's not a race, and that you're just not human when it comes to this stuff :D
Having binge-watched all 30 episodes this week, I can't wait for GST part 2! Your videos have really inspired me to look into getting a PPL. Many thanks for capturing your journey and to David for allowing you to record you training/test.
Ah Greg that’s awesome to hear. Thanks for watching and putting up with it! I have loved every second...so far...I couldn’t recommend it more really...
Huge respect to you both - I think you are right, this was probably the first actual GST on RUclips. Most instructors are probably afraid others may be judgemental on their teaching technique, never mind their examining ability. David is top notch on both - a chap confident as a pilot, instructor and examiner. Ben, you have been prepared to put yourself out there - warts and all - would I do it, not a chance. Your journey throughout and uptake on flying skills is a credit to you both. For me I think a break due to feeling a little unwell is/was a common sense decision. David was actively thinking about how this affects the GST during the vid - deciding correctly in my opinion. I'm sure there will be some disagreeing (there always is) I've learned so much watching the vids- thanks.
Hey Neil. I just had to forward that message to my instructor - brilliantly rewarding to see stuff is resonating with people. So thanks. Bravery or stupidity to record my test haha! Thanks again for being a part of it
I'm going to fess up to only getting a partial pass at my first GST - I took it in an aircraft that doesn't stall (a CFM Shadow), so when my examiner said those fateful words 'Show me a stall with minimal loss of height', I pulled the power and stick back until the aircraft began to mush, then simultaneously put the stick forward and applied full power. There's only one way a Shadow will go under full power and that's UP, so far from losing any height I gained it. I failed for not adjusting the attitude properly and getting the aircraft flying before applying power.....a lesson well learned. In a Shadow, you can sit with stick right back and the engine on idle and she'll just parachute down without dropping the nose at all.
Hi Ben, I was pondering when your GST was - glad it wasn't this week, awful weather in the SW! - I'm running out of data, so I'll have to switch to the laptop this evening. It's 19:45hrs, I'm still beavering away saw the alert, now I can't wait to view the outcome! So good of you and your instructors to film all of this! Not a cliche - what a journey we've been on with you, super stuff. Im sorry to hear that you felt unwell, it's all the aero type exercises back to back, plus bumpy conditions atop of the GST. The first guy I flew with, was airsick all through his flight training! Kept going though and after he had qualified he was fine. Back in the day, it wasnt unknown for students to take airsickness pills, I suspect that wouldnt be allowed these days!? Now it's 20:45 and Id better crack on again! Looking forward to Part 2 and seeing how you did. BTW was that a CTSW in the intro of your video and a blue Bristell at the hangers?
One of your best videos yet by far! I’m currently at Gloucestershire Airport doing my training and I’m enjoying it so much. Now I have to wait until part 2... I hope your little illness didn’t really turn into anything much, just a nerves thing hopefully? It’s always nice to have the instructor as an examiner, it’s reinsuring, just like my instructor. Well done Ben!
Thanks Dan! Yeeeeh! Awesome I’ve seen some of your videos. No no - I think it was a combination of nerves / bumps / turns and stalls...concentrating immensely... Ha. Thanks for watching
Ben Atkinson Awh I’m glad it didn’t turn into something nasty! I’m into Radio too, having my own show on an online radio and being a station manager at it - strange to think we basically do the same things! It’s crazy to think you’ve seen some of my videos, I’m always listening to your Heart shows from 4, keep up the great work in terms of flying and the radio, you’re an amazing person Ben!
Hi Ben... just had the notification pop up, CLICKED on it... not seen it until the end. Busy at moment, not going to get a chance to watch until later this evening. 🙈🙈🤣🤣
Currently trying to perfect my landings Ben, a few bumpy ones at the moment but they are getting better. Then I suppose it will be solo. Tried to record the flight this week - video fine, but I’m having some serious issues with the audio not in sync. I’m using crappy windows movie maker so it’s probably that (I’m hoping). Do you mind me asking what editing software you are using?
Wow, that took me right back to my GST, thank you for sharing. I can say you do get used to the lumps and bumps...eventually. You should try having a go on a paramotor tandem, you'll appreciate your nice comfy aircraft. Still playing catch up on you cataloge.
Well done Ben. I had engine problems during my GST steep turns in a flex, so had to PFL back to the airfield. I borrowed a friend's plane to complete the test and passed. A very stressful but satisfying experience. I intend to convert to 3-axis this year and build a Skyranger as soon as funds allow. Safe flying 😁
Hey Ben. I watched this on a tablet that I’ve just acquired to run SkyDemon on and I had to stop too coz I felt queasy. Can’t wait for part two but have a sneaky suspicion that you’ve aced your GST. Thanks for sharing, bumps and all.
Where am I in my training? I'm at the "Not had an official lesson yet" stage. Although, I have done some basic handling/experience flights with Classic Wings at Duxford, in Tiger Moths and once in Chipmunk G-ARMG. That doesn't really count but it was lots of fun. I'm sure you are not the first to feel a bit uncomfortable during a GST. You're doing all the things you've done before but with the added psychological worry of it being a test.
I'm sure they would take your booking :-) The Tiger Moth is very responsive. You get a real sense of adventure and the early years of flying. The open cockpit isn't as draughty as you may expect.
@@BenAtkinsonVideos Oh, haha! I thought that this was just in preperation of the exam / skill test 😂 So you passed this part? Congrats! What's up next?
This was the real thing! Obviously I’ve not included several aspects like the passenger brief or ground exam. The second part of the GST will be up on Saturday morning - find out then if I passed!
Hey Muso! It’s an iPad mini 4. WiFi only. 64gb off the top of my head - On a pooleys iPad mini kneeboard! Connected via Bluetooth to a GNS2000 gps module - which works excellently and was recommended by Rory from Rory On Air!
I know that this was a long time ago and that you're qualified now but in my observation I can see that your seat belt is very tight, restricting blood flow. I have experienced the same issues with my seat belt being too tight on my Train Driving GST?
It is allowed, however, cross auditing of instructors and students is also often performed so as to make sure that all bases have been covered - nothing sinister in the doing of, just a crosscheck for syllabus training consistency. Yet in, Eg. a one person flying school the CFI is able to perform all aspects of flight training including the GST. So it's all legitimate.
Absolutely - it’s a good idea to have a session with another instructor to crosscheck the student is competent. Thanks for watching and commenting guys!
@@BenAtkinsonVideos I was lead to believe by my instructor that a students instructor couldn`t take said student on their GST, but my instructor also said you could`nt use a Skyranger as a training aircraft because it is kit built. Trevor Christian - if they’re an examiner as well they can. Not all instructors are examiners. Yes! The skyranger ones a funny one, you can - if you own it or have a share in it...so I have a £1 share in it. Funny loophole. Plus - it is a good idea if another examiner takes your test for cross referencing.
For an NPPL you can be examined on a NPPL skills test by your own flight instructor. Of course, good practice suggests that Skills Tests should be examined whenever possible by someone other than the instructor who has conducted the bulk of your training. For us that wasn’t possible so DY took my exam as he does with most of his students. Licence all signed by the correct parties so we’re all good, mate!
I'm so happy for you that you're doing your test. But unfortunately you have to fail, otherwise the name of the channel would make no sense anymore . ;-) I cross my fingers

Ben Atkinson an excellent edit which I watched while tidying my office.
I’ll take that from editing royalty!!

Doing my pre GST next week. This will be a great help for preparation. Thank you

Thank you. Top advice ...

‘I’m feeling a bit queezy’
‘Okay, well here’s two sodding engine failures’
Good skills though mate! 👍
Just what I needed 😂
Almost ready now for my GST on a C42 at Kernan valley aviation, good video.
Late reply - sorry! Thanks for watching. How are you getting on now?
