Little known fact: the NYC downtown store is in part of the old Gimbals department store building.

They came in handy for me in high school as I needed taller sized jeans and shirts! There's only one in the SF Bay Area now in San Bruno. I was surprised to see it when taking a bus down that way as I assumed they had all closed for good!

I used to buy a lot from JCP. Clothes (I had to order tall sizes so I used the catalog and phone ordering a lot...esp. those in the catalog 'desks' is the stores). Custom made drapery, furniture, (even a few appliances) and everything in my bathrooms for years. Although I am now retired (and need a lot less STAFFORD brand clothes), I shop a lot less period, but I miss them already...or should I say...the store that they once were.

I, remember Back in the day, I used to love shopping 🛍 at J.C.PENNEY, and I used to get my hair done at J.C.PENNEY Eastland Mall in Harper Woods, Michigan. I, remember Montgomery Ward's, went out of business years ago. When, Sear's and Kmart both merged and both Sear's and Kmart are on the way to going out of business. And, I heard that J.C.PENNEY is next to go. When, J.C.PENNEY closed the Eastland Mall Store, then Sear's took over the old J.C.PENNEY store. Then, Sear's closed the Eastland Mall Store. To, this very day, the Eastland Mall is being demolished.

JC Penney’s had excellent hair salons. All around the country.

I bought my wedding dress from JC Penney’s in 1979, it was 75. and even though my mother thought I should go to a dress shop, it was what I wanted…

All of my back to school clothes were purchased every year at Penny’s. My Dad bought his work clothes at Montgomery Ward, but my Mom preferred Penny’s.

Have had a penny's card fit 30 years. Came in handy the other day. My penny's started selling appliances.. A washer caught my eye. Was armed with my 20% coupon. Salesman said no. Started to walk away, be said hang on, called a manager who gave me 30% off and free delivery in 2 days! That's what happens when your card says 1993

Thank you for the trip down memory lane. It is too bad that J.C. Penny, Sears, & Montgomery Ward, 😅could not keep up with the times. Every one of them, could have been the "Amazon ", but they were mismanaged by greedy illegitimate business people.

Same thing for the auto industry. The companies are mismanaged by greedy bean counters rather than people who are passionate about their products.

I bought a new outfit almost every Saturday when my parents went to town. We delivered eggs to some of the women who worked there. I think i spent all the money they made selling them. I still shop there occasionally and have their credit card. But not as much as i used to. Im retired now and just dont have the $ to shop as much.

Penny's wouldn't give me a credit card when I worked at Sears, down the street, about 1965.

WT. Grants for a while would give store credit cards to anyone without checking their credit history. Not a good idea.

The biggest problem with JCPenney’s is the same reason why Sears is basically gone, the stores have fallen in despair and they are not very clean like they used to be either, plus being from Metro Atlanta originally I personally wasn’t a huge JCPenney’s fan to begin with because the only two JCPenney’s locations I really like was the former Cumberland Mall location in Atlanta/Smyrna/Vinings, Georgia which is now Costco of course, and Hiram, Georgia location because the one at Arbor Place Mall in Douglasville Georgia is extremely rough, the Town Center at Cobb location looks like a Kohl’s and Sears combined together even though it used to be a Mervyn’s at one time, the Panama City Mall location is ehh, and the Pier Park location is awful now. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Another store I grew up with that "was". The marketing concept "perceived value" in action:
Shop keeper "I want to sell you this item at a fair price" Consumer "I don't think so"
Shop keeper "OK, I'll double the price and give you 1/3 off" Consumer "I'll take it" Me: "WTH?"

Don't buy online stores and you will have a store in your back yard, Sears , K-Mart , Macys Toy R Us Kay-bee toy , Woolworth, Montgomery Ward, Services Merchandise , Mervyns, Burdines my store. And it will continue and you can stop it.
