Kept me afloat many years as a cashier. We also had to know how to count change back to the customers and we had to know the items on sell, nothing was automated. Sometimes I wish I would have stayed with Publix, but I am not sure my pension would have been then same. BUT, the customer service isn't the same, but it is better than most other stores. Thank you Publix for giving me a meaningful job as a young person.
41 year associate here.
My first job, it helped me pay for college. I remember counting change and not just giving it in a clump. I find the customer service really varies based on management/store location. I still shop there even though it isn't the closest by any means. I am grateful too. I remember at college referencing my job there (I had quit so I could do internships), each one of my friends visiting found out we had all been employed at different stores throughout FL while in High School, it was fun to compare experiences and we found ourselves laughing a lot that night.
@@CJ-sg3vs Amazing! I would have stayed if they had allowed women in management (not head cashier, one of the few full time positions open to women in the 1980's). I saw that wasn't possible so I went to college and was in management by age 26. Still very much a man's world there but I still shop there because they focus on excellence and usually achieve it.
One of the Best things to happen to me in my life was applying at Publix at 16. 32 years later I retired at 49. Publix made that possible 🙏🏻
That's so awesome. I love Publix the employees are are always helpful, kind and courteous. God Bless you. I'm from South, Florida lol. Very familiar with Hialeah.
My Dad did the same thing. Retired at 55 and is still living well
@@surfstarcc1 Smart man, "enjoy it while you can" 🙏🙏🙏
Congratulations.
So are my both parents
I'm a proud Publix employee 16 years and counting!!!
It is the only grocery store I have been in where when the lines get backed up, the manager or assistant manager comes out and opens a register.
This company sure had an impact on my life. Thank you Publix and Mr George
What a brilliant businessman and innovator. He treated his employees well and the Lord blessed him for that. My wife worked for them for over 44 years. That enabled us to retire in 2020. Thank you Mr. George.
I've been working at Publix for almost 21 years as a Front Service Clerk.
I worked for them for 141/2 years. Best job best people- I loved it so much Mr Gilbert was the best store manger even won best store manger for several years.- I can get lost walking around the store -sometimes I’ll even straighten out the bakery without anybody knowing I will always love that store because they really mean what they say I hope they don’t change because society is getting uglier Publix stay strong don’t lose what Mr. Jenkins taught you and tried so hard so hard to build. “ love you always Publix “❤️❤️❤️
.
I was a manager at Publix for 16 years, opened 5 stores and met MrGeorge twice when I worked at store #29. Great memories and proud to have been part of the history. Great video! Cool to see one of my local stores at the end with Adam bagging groceries. 👍🏻
Both of my kids work at Publix, one has been there 2 years and the other just started a few months ago. They are treated well by the management and have received appropriate wages and raises. The oldest has been promoted twice in the 2 year period. They give $100 gift cards to all staff members around the holidays. A very nice company to work for. Hard to find these days.
I’ve always like how their stores are always immaculate. Never been in a dirty Publix. The one I shop in, closest to my house, is about 30 years old and you can’t tell. It looks brand new. I like the Clearance shelves with markdown products. I bought a box of their brand of cat food and it tang up higher than the posted ticket on the shelf. I showed the manager and I got it for free. Their policy is if an item wrings up wrong, you get the item for free. Their weighing scales, it was just announced ,if they don’t work anymore, they will be taken out of the store. Mrs. Jenkins passed away this past year. It’s a shame traditions are all going by the wayside. I just retired and if I had to go back to work, Publix is the first place I would apply. Their subs and bakery items are still good, but won’t be surprised if that changes too, just like everything else. I’ve never had a bad experience shopping there.
Really excellent and informative video! I'm sure Kroger feels Publix breathing down their neck.
I'm a proud Publix associate. Best job I've ever had. I wish i would have started sooner.
I just started as a cashier at Publix 4 months ago and I absolutely love it!! I’m planning to make a career out of it
Good. It was my first job and I loved the work ethic and the good people there. Definitely a good place to have a career.
Absolutely love Publix from the day I moved to Florida in 1983 ! 💗💗💗
Great memories working at Publix, 1978 - 1985, thru high school and college. Was a Producer Clerk at #126 (North Miami Beach, FL) and #30 (Aventura, FL). Showing up 7AM Saturday mornings after a night out of partying....classic. Chugging a few beers in the employee mens bathroom stall, classic. Best of times.
Publix shopper for decades!!!! Love you Publix!
I worked at Publix in the Orlando area for several years in the 90's. I loved the people I worked with and our managers- they worked hard and expected all of us to do the same. It was a pleasure to work there, as well as shop! I wouldn't shop anywhere else.
Small world, I lived in Orlandoin the 80s and most of the 90's until we moved to Clermont on 1997. What store did you work at? I love Publix subs and rotisserie chicken's!!!!
I worked in Flagler store in early 80's, left because they didn't put women in management. I still shop there, I'm in Orlando for the past 35 years. I've shopped in many of the area stores, as I moved home and hearth.
Thank you for this upload. I love Publix it truly is a pleasure to shop at Publix.
I worked at a Publix supermarket in Florida as a teenager in the 1970’s. It was great. I have lived in Washington state for the majority of my adult life, and I have wished many times that they were out here. This video brought back happy memories for me. Thanks very much for sharing it.
Yes I remember Green stamps used to save books and books of them !
Loved my S&H Green stamps as a young mom. I STILL have an idem that I got in around 1974.....a hard case light blue Cosmetic Luggage. Its traveled the USA. It still brings me memories of the 1970s and especially the birth of our son being it was taken to the hospital for the birth of our son. Got it a S&H store in North Miami on Biscayne Blvd next to a cafeteria that was there for decades from the 60s. Mind you I was just a child in 60s.
I also worked at the S&H store one year while in college. Then went to work for Publix for a few years. I have family that retired from Publix but one family member STILL working for Publix who's going to finally retire next year. Publix IS Florida.
I am from Florida and live in the Atlanta Georgia area. I started working for Publix just a couple weeks ago. So glad to be part of the team. Thank you publix.
This was great, I had no idea it was that late in the game before they had stores outside of FL. Would like to hear about the history of their neon signs that they used to use too. I miss that!
My favorite store at Christmas time, even if I'm not shopping for food - it always gets me in the "spirit".
My husband has been a Publix employee for 13 years, and the shopping experience is amazing with friendly, helpful associates, and clean stores. Publix has been real good for our family.
Born and raised in Florida. Now living out of state. The one thing I miss is Publix.
Same here.I miss that state
Publix still has superior customer service compared to most other merchants.
Publix is my favorite store. I met my wife at the one she worked at in Orlando 22 years ago after I retired from the USN and moved here. I'm a lucky guy and the best thing I ever did was start shopping there.
Being born in the North East of New England.
And after watching this video... The world needs more Publix...
I grew up in Vero Beach, Florida in the 1960s. I remember my mom used to go to Winn-Dixie but there was a Publix right down the street from it and my mom started going there. It look exactly like the one on the cover of this post and at 3:39. I remember how awesome it looked with that giant wing- shape that really appealed to a young Sci-Fi devotee and at night it used to light up with florescent lighting all green and white. Funny what you remember from your youth...
I live in Lakeland and many people here knew George Jenkins and remember him fondly.
This is wonderful! Thank you for sharing.
Publix is a bit pricy in comparison to the other supermarkets in the area, but WELL WORTH IT. The Quality of both the Products and their Employees makes the difference. All I can hope is they never hire an "Accountant" CEO/Board that blindly RUINS the thing that makes them a "Cut Above".
Shopped at Wally world Monday, shopped Publix Tuesday, Wally was more expensive on some products Publix carries. Def. the Publix brand is superior to most store brands. Publix does put toxic Canola Oil in products either. I agree, as long as they stay focused, they will always attract customers.
It helps, I think, that Publix is privately held. If it ever went public I'd worry that that would begin the corner cutting, employee-chiseling, and nickel-and-diming of the customers, all in the name of "driving shareholder value." ("Shareholder", by the way, does not mean thrifty individuals investing in a handful of shares, but institutional investment firms and executive boards who will strangle the life out of a company for short term gain, then walk away.)
I agree that it is pricey overall, but the shopping experience is so much better than anywhere else. You get in and out quickly and without a lot of hassle.
It is. I shopped there often while staying in Gainesville, FL, and working for Shipt during the pandemic. The Village Market location, the one on the University of Florida campus was my absolute favorite with Adam Service as the head manager. Was totally impressed with how professional Publix' culture was. Big Thumbs Up! (back home in Philadelphia now. sadly my mom and aunt passed away in Gainesville, FL, after having spent about 8 or 9 of their senior years there.)
Best Key lime pie. ...Publix!!! Thank you 🤩
Awesome story about Publix, I live in Virginia, there's not a Publix in this area, but I remember shopping at the one in New Port Richey, Florida a few years ago, it was a nice store. Theres 4 grocery stores in a 8 mile radius here, and not one of them offers a free cookie!, that's not good!!, the prices that they charge, they should offer a dozen cookies!!, thanks for sharing, I love your channel. 😊
Here in Lakeland Publix is on every corner.
We love our local Publix and have made friends with so many who work there. It's truly a shopping pleasure!❤️☀️😊
I started at Publix in 1985. 34 years later I have a very comfortable retirement. Great company to work for.
We always shopped there when in FLA, we always found unusual packaged food we couldnt find at home, it was like going to disney for us.
Successful for over 80+ years. Slow steady growth.
Many stores try to grow rapidly and go out of business in just a few decades.
My favorite groceries store!
I applied as a bag boy in 1985 and they sent me to get a polygraph test. The polygraph detective asked me if I ever used Marijuana. My father told me to never lie. So I told them yes. I went to the car afterwards and my father was in the car and asked what happened. I think he knew I wouldn't get the job, and probably wished I would have lied. I was then told by Publix I didn't pass the polygraph and would not be hired. Today I make more than a bag boys weekly pay in a hour . Looking back it was very hurtful to me because inside I felt rejected for being truthful.
What did I just read 🤣
One of the best companies to work for, especially while in college
I was sitting with friends at FSU in 1984. I mentioned working at Publix (2 yr. high school, 2 yr. Community College) and funny enough, each friend present had also worked at Publix in High School from diff. parts of the state. The rest of the night, we exchanged our Publix experiences, it was such fun!
Love Publix. Clean, friendly, great sales.
I lived in central Florida.. And watching this, really makes me home sick..!
I love Publix!!!
I've grown up with them in Miami for years. And now in Orlando. They are the same from they Keys to here. Perfect.
I shopped in several Publix supermarkets when I lived in Florida, and I was always pleased with the experience and the quality products that I was able to purchase.
I recently started working at a local Publix near me and I am surprised at Publix's history.
Hope it treats you well. It sounds like a great company to work for.
I reached my first year at Publix and most of the time it is a pleasure thank you for the opportunity🙏🏾
One of my favorite memories of the Publix location on SW 27 Avenue and SW 22 Terrace in Miami was when I was maybe 17 and I was shopping there with my dad. He had a habit of adding up everything in his head, something that I still can't do to this day. Anyway, when the cashier told my dad the total, my dad said that she was off by a penny. When she offered to re-ring everything, my dad said, "No, no, no.......I probably miscounted!" And that's my most memorable Publix moment!
First of your videos I've seen... well done.
I Travel 95 Miles To Get To The One In Clarksville, TN And It's Worth The Drive.
OUTSTANDING Key Lime Pie And Submarine Sandwiches.
Although they are more expensive than most stores, the weekly sales ads more than compensates with buy one get one free deals. And if you ever have an issue with a product, they will either replace it or refund you without a hassle. The stores are almost always clean, and if not, if you let the manager know, it will be corrected right away.
Great job!
Liked and sub today so glad I found you channel! I truly appreciate it! !
Hands down the best grocery store. It is the chick-fil--a of grocery stores... This was wonderful thank you!
If only we kept Closed on Sunday like Chick-fil-a still does XP
The food is so good at Publix you should never go into the store hungry.
I love Publix
The Publix shopping experience can't be beatl
Looks like you've travelled down Recollection Road...
We love our Publix here in Savannah GA
I remember going to Publix with my mother in the early sixties...fond memories of my Mother and Publix so long ago.
I enjoy going to Publix a lot when I was growing up I still shop there
Nice job boss. I’m the northern tourist who will always remember the associate who cheerfully gave me a second sample of her delicious chicken salad. We’d been walking on St. Pete Beach all day and I was starving.
My husband is originally from Connecticut and all of his Yankee USMC buddies and their families who vacation in Florida every year always hit Publix as their first stop. ALWAYS. And they stock up at Publix before they leave to go back home. I never understood why they’d get so excited about Publix until I food shopped in CT, NJ, and NY myself. It is bleak up there, y’all. 😂😂😂
Remember this well, enjoy the pleasure of shopping Publix today. Sure will miss the scales. The cookies for my children were a much anticipated treat. The service to your car is a sure spoiler. You didn't mention the Food World for old stores that were replaced by new buildings nearby. Might be a story idea?
Great memories! And thanks for the suggestion for a future story!
This story needs to be a part of orientation. Most of this I knew but the name change and Lakeland transfer were new.
It used to be a part of the hiring process. It was called rolling out the green carpet. It has gone away now, possibly due to the overturning of so many staff.
@@KO13199 No they still show that but the bit about him moving the headquarrters to Lakeland was a surprise to me.
When you are hired you get a green card with the picture of Mr George. It is to remind you that premiere customer service and what, where and how Publix came to be. I still keep my photo in my wallet.
@@jerryw5508 That's neat. I was there in the early 80's and they didn't do that.
I’m part of the pubsub cult
Jenkins used employee ownership from his first Publix, even loaning employees money to buy shares
The best grocery store in America in my opinion.I've been all over the US . It's the store I compare all other's to. There policies towards black employees wasn't always good.
But seems to have gotten better. After all this is the south. But it's still my main shopping place. I don't buy produce from very many places but them. As a vegetarian/ vegan, they keep me alive . Lol They are always ahead of the game. Non meat items, organic produce, Yogurt. Health conscious eating,Publix is the bomb. One of the reasons I live where I do. I always want to live close by a Publix. 👍🏾👍🏾
Man years later its the famous grocery store
Publix moved into the Charlotte market a few years ago. They have a higher level of service but you pay for it
I have shopped at Publix exculsively for over 30 yrs, and I have yet to be disappointed.....
Publix is a part of my young adulthood in Florida
I live outside of Fort Lauderdale Florida I shop this brand ones or twice a week rarely more!
Well I'm impressed in several ways. I travel to Richmond to the VA hospital for my medical care. Often they will put a patient up overnight at a place call the DoubleTree (a Hilton). I looked to see where a Publix might be in Virginia. Nothing close to where I live but I will make it a point to visit the one that is just off Route 60 which is the way I travel. It isn't even out of my way, OK less than a mile off 60. If I stay overnight about 1/2 mile.
I'm equally impressed with your channel. It seems each day something new appears on my RUclips Home Page. Thanks for a fine piece of history.
I believe that Publix in the pic was in Margate Florida. We shopped there as a child. Great memories
WOW! We should have Publix in Canada where Weston (Loblaws) rules with an iron hand that is not employee-owned. You got us this time USA!
PUBLIX PRIDE BABY!!
I remember.
Publix 👍🏽
I really miss those scales, I remember using it every single time when I was a kid. Trying to change my weight by using the grocery bags and stuff like that
My favorite 🤩
PUBLIX IS THE 👌 THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO
true on a number of points. being from the north, i didn't understand when they offered to take my groceries out to my car. secondly, the subs and chicken tenders are the best!
We would buy the chicken tenders and then put marinara sauce and shaved parmesan on them with some basil. Pop it in the oven to heat up the sauce and to melt the cheese and then we would have a pretty simple chicken parmesan dinner!
Been at publux almost 35 yrs
When in Nashville, I stop there for some goodies, and a PubSub. It's the closest one to home. BTW, Publix Theatres was aligned with Paramount Pictures in the early 30's; known as Paramount Publix Corporation before Adolph Zukor regained control of the studio.

... 7:15 There it is. I can't speak to other states, but it feels like Publix also played a role in making sushi more available in grocery store seafood sections.
I worked in a Publix deli, and there's definitely some good memories. Some bad ones too, but that comes with any retail/food/customer service job. Especially after watching a Karen compilation, it makes you think about how everyone should work at least one retail job in their life... and Publix would probably be the safest way to experience that. Now I work in insurance, but my takeaway was "be that customer that the workers talk nicely about in the break room"
$3,15 an hour; boy was I happy to get that first $44.00 paycheck. Had a blast for 3 years store number 166 Commercial and Dixie hi- way Oakland Park (Ft. Lauderdale)
I didn't know he opened his first store right next door to the piggly wiggly he worked at, that was a savage move of him lol.
I gotta say there customer service is top notch!!! But when I shop I'm looking for low cost. There prices are very high compared to other stores. I guess great customer service is worth it to some.
And cleanliness. A dirty store and parking lot is very depressing; communicates no one cares.
Here in south florida you were either team winn dixie or team publix. Publix was slightly more expensive but had customer service that couldn't be beat. This is going back 30 or 40 years. If you asked someone where something was they wouldn't tell you - they walked you to the item and pointed to it. Every register had a bagger and you had to fight them to keep them from bringing your cart to the car and loading your trunk. This era is over. Publix customer service is no better and no worse than anywhere else. Ask where something is and you'll get a grunt and an "aisle 5" reply. Only about half the registers have a bagger. The new stores are a thing of beauty, I'll give that to them. I'm still a loyal Publix shopper but the golden years are over.
Wow I work for Publix in South Florida.
Their deli is 🔥🔥! Them Boars Head subs 🤤😋 I will say the Mardi Gras wings don't hit like they did in the 90's still good nevertheless. Oh yeah here in Nashville they were first to get Blue Bell Banana Pudding Ice cream in their stores. Publix for the win!!
Such an awesome video!!!! This channel is going to explode soon. Love it.
Thank you for the kind words and the support! We hope you continue to enjoy our content!
KABOOM!!!
Wish we had them in California! We only have a hand full of supermarkets!

I'm sorry that I never got to meet Mr.Jenkins..the store's founder and creator..when he was still with us.
You forgot about the green stamps and the green stamp stores that Publix used to have.
i do remember the s & h stamps as a kid back in the 70's & early 80's. you used to save the stamps up & buy items thru the Publix store or their catalog. or you can hand the stamps to the casher to knock some money off you're bill
@@cabbitkisser2620 Green stamps were all over. I remember growing up in Michigan you collected them and stamped them in a book. Where you have enough books you could trade them in for small appliance or something else. There was even a stand alone S&H stamp redemption store in my city.
