My Aunt was the Soda Fountain Manager at the downtown Detroit Store for many many years, and I used to go down there every Saturday from the time I was 8 years old. Every year Mr Kresge would invite his managers and their families to his home, out on the lake, and I always got to go to. My Aunt worked for SS Kresge and then K Mart for 52 years until she retired. When she retired they gave her a beautiful Diamond ring, and I still wear that stone every day. Great Memories!!
Thank you for these great memories. As a child in the 1950's, I so enjoyed shopping at Kresge's. I especially enjoyed when they had pumpkin pie where you selected a piece of paper with an amount of up to $.25 and that would be the cost. Also, the "Richardson Root Beer" from the half barrel soda dispenser. Kids today are really missing out not having these fun experiences.
I love the old newspaper ads...and seeing what was popular (please show the dates if you can). I remember the food counters from the 1960's, and getting hamburgers and root beer on a shopping trip. This was long before there were fast food stores on every corner, and it was a treat when we went shopping. Gosh, we even dressed up to go shopping back then. The two original KRESGE stores in my city still are there, with their name carved in the front of the building...but unfortunately, they are in areas where I would be afraid to walk the dog.
I got my first rpm record at the Kresge's in my neighborhood. I remember seeing the delicious baked ham in the deli window and the sprites being served in the cone shaped paper cups with the metal base at the luncheonette. Over the next decades the site has been a host to a variety of different discount stores.
Thank you, great memories. When we were kids in the 70s, if we behaved, my mom would let my brother and I each pick out a Hot Wheel at Kresge's. Ate in the dining area sometimes too. Westborn shopping center, Dearborn, Michigan. Our grandmother worked the switchboard at the Crowley's in the same plaza. Another Detroit area favorite was also in the same plaza: Sander's Candy.
There is a strong rumor that Kmart will be no more in March of this year. Their decline was like other failed chains---they were stuck in the past, and failed to keep up with the times. I worked there in the mid 2000's, and it was sad---they could've closed their doors every night at 6 pm, because after that it was like a ghost town
Well, we are hours away from starting March, 2022... (28 February) And there's NO CLOSING SALES YET at the 10 Kmart stores still open (2 in New Jersey, 1 in Long Island, New York, 1 in Miami, FL, 4 in the US Virgin Islands, 1 in Guam and 1 in Puerto Rico). (the PR location at Plaza Las Américas Mall is the only one you can find both a Sears [20 left] and a Kmart in the same town, one in front of the other) So THE TORTURE CONTINUES until sometime later in 2022...
In the 1960’s my mom was a bookkeeper at the SS Kresge store in Tucson, Arizona in the shopping center on Campbell Ave and Glenn. This was the first enclosed and air conditioned mall in Tucson. It was actually just a strip center with an enclosed walkway along the front of the stores. I loved going there to shop and even bought my first records there. 👍🏼
I remember the main street of downtown Quincy, Massachusetts had a Kresge on one side of the street and a Woolworth on the other side of the street, just a few blocks down. The two stores were very similar and both had the low lunch counters. I remember going in these stores to by those Adams(?) magic tricks and gimmicks. Also Ben Cooper Halloween costumes. The plant sections had just old fashioned things like philodendrons and ivy. I bought hamsters and turtles from these places too.
I, remember working for Kmart, from 1985 until 1996. When, Kmart was owner name was S.S.Kresge Co. to The Kmart Corporation. I, worked at Kmart #4145 located at 50 N. Groesbeck Hwy and Cass in Mt. Clemens ,Michigan. Kmart, has been closing stores in the 1990's. The, Kmart Store, where I worked at Closed Permanently on Sunday, May 8th.,Mother's Day at 1:30pm. The, old Kmart on N.Groesbeck Hwy and Cass is now a Planet Fitness Gym in the main Kmart Store, in the Kmart Garden Shop, is a Subway Submarine Shop. The, Grocery store section was a Kmart Foods, Wrigley's Supermarket, Great Scott!Supermarket, and a Kroger. After, Kroger closed permanently, is now a Dollar Tree 🌳 Store.
Great video! Glad RUclips recommended your channel to me. I would recommend getting different background music so you aren’t confused with recollection road
In 1964 I was in 5th grade and we lived on 69th and State St right next to the Dan Ryan Expressway, that had just been built about 2 years prior. In the snowy winter seasons between 1960 and 1962, we would sneak beneath the fencing and go sledding from State St and Lafayette Ave down into the unfenced and unpaved dugout being prepared for construction of the expressway. There was a slaughter house, packing house, and fresh produce market just to the north of us. On the corner there was a Tavern next to the Dry Cleaners. Just around the corner heading east towards Wabash there was a small SS Kresge 5 and Dime store in all it's fading glory, which held many a childhood dream, Balsa Wood Propeller Planes, Snap on roller skates, Jacks, Spinning Tops, Yoyos and Beanie Copters. What a simple time it was, long gone but never forgotten. Thanks for a chance to reach back and reflect on those days once again
I went to work for K-Mart Corp in 1979. Management Trainee at Kresge store 123…. Northland in Southfield MI. Then promoted to asst store manager for a little known division called Jupiter. The store was at 8 mile and Dequindre. Then on to work for K-mart Apparel. Garden City Michigan on Ford Rd. Store 4000.. the original K-Mart. Worked in Plymouth, and 10 and Gratiot. Wonderful memories of a store gone too soon.
I was born in a town, which at the time had a Kresge's, K Mart and a Woolworth's. Each store had a lunch counter/dinette, and I remember them fondly... Some things were better in the "good old days", and I miss them.
The K Mart Red Grille. my best memories of shopping with my mom during the summer. A hot dog, fries and a chocolate milk while the adults had coffee and smoked. I do remember mom talking about Kresge's when i was younger but dont remember every going there. I'd be interested in being an adult back in those times just to see how things were done. Awesome video and thank you so much.
Nice to watch these vids, and to hear my hometown mention (Toledo). Being born towards the end of the 70's, I missed out on all this (except Kmart, which I went to all the time).
Pretty sure at 1:00 minute mark this shows the Philadelphia store that was on my block where I lived for 50 years in Philadelphia. This would have been sometime in the twenties or early thirties. I lived in that store as a child. I loved that store, the fondest memories of my childhood. I'm close to 99% sure that was my block. The architecture is too perfect & I have seen photos of this same store in our neighborhood history book. I started shopping in 1963 when I was five years old. Interesting that we also had an F.W. Woolworth across the big street which I wasn't allowed to cross. I had no idea these two men worked together until now. Yes, this was my store.
We had a Kresge’s store in our local shopping center. When we were little, once a week my mom would take us there to pick a balloon and the counter lady would pop it. Inside of the balloon was the price you’d pay for a banana split. As low as one cents! I would also get to buy the 45 RPM of the week. They were on sale for 58 cents. Such great memories❤
At an automotive swap meet recently, I bought an old AMT model car kit, still in it's cellophane wrapper and with a Krege's price sticker on it of $3.34. Those were the days when model car kits weren't just sold in hobby shops.
Kmart used to be really decent back in the day, but now Sears, Eddie Lampart, and Transformco ruined it, and all the remaining stores still left open are just nothing more but a sad gloomy and depressing store. 😞 All the locations near me and where I used to live all shut down. 🤔

@@jarvisbelmont6804 Wow, I spent my childhood in Lansdale. My Grandmother & her husband were relocated when Merck, Sharp & Dohme moved to Lansdale or North Wales. I know they called it the West Point facility. The time period you mention would have been when I would stay at my Grandmother's house. I remember Davis's Bar & Grille because that's where my Grandmother would haul her husband out of after he wouldn't come home from work. Lol. Can't remember her taking us to either Wooley's & Kresge's though. I must be getting old now because I can't remember the names of the grocery stores she would drag me to. I do remember Moyer's meat store. Turns out Jaime Moyer was a pitcher for the Phillies. Yes, she lived on North Wales Road.

Very Heart Warming Story. SS Kresge said "Get a Greater Thrill by serving others"' .That's the way that I felt during my 35 years.

was there a KRESGES by Lansdale PA.. if so Peggy March was getting her fashions there. in 1962 and 1963 ????
I remember my grandmother working at Kresge’s near Farmington MI back in the day. Late 60s early 70s. We’d go visit her when she was working.
I have fond memories of Kresge and KMart.
I sure do miss them.

Learned so much I never knew about SS Kresge’s and KMart! Fond memories of our local Michigan stores while growing up.

Alice Cooper's song 'Generation Landslide' brought me here.

Thank you so much for this piece of history and my life.
My Mom made 2 picture frames from the golden colored 0 or O in the Kresge signs. My Dad worked for Kresge and Kmart many years in the 60's and 70's.
Loved SS Kresge. Ised to shop at one in Hagerstown MD when i was a kid.
Up until the early 80's we had a kresge dime store in our Detroit neighborhood on Michigan Ave.
At an automotive swap meet recently, I bought an old AMT model car kit, still in it's cellophane wrapper and with a Krege's price sticker on it of $3.34. Those were the days when model car kits weren't just sold in hobby shops.

I was hoping to see the bike ad but was still surprised. I got a similar bike with fenders and no hand brake, 28.88.
Great Presentation!
Where did you find all of the photographs?
